This week, we're closing out an unsuccessful hunt with a movie about a man with no name, no identity, no family, and no reason to really be too interested in him as the main character of a film. Yes, it's 1997's The Saint, directed once again by Phillip Noyce, and starring Val Kilmer, Elisabeth Shue, Rade Serbedzija, Henry Goodman, Alun Armstrong, Valeri Nikolaev, Charlotte Cornwell and Emily Mortimer. It's a movie that pairs up a man with no inner life and a woman with no self-esteem as our action-thriller romantic leads, and despite everything working against them in this script, Kilmer and Shue still manage to be quite charming. It's a merciful end to Come On Feel The Noyce, as we're finally done with Phil's films, going out on a movie that could very well make podcast history as the first film to be denied entry in its bid to join the ADHD-DVD canonical classics. Plus: we go deep on the annoying discourse that dominated the week, as Barbie is slighted by the Oscars by only being nominated for 8 including Best Picture, while Tenet finally gets granted a theatrical re-release, and previous pod fodder The Accountant has an unlikely sequel on the way. Other works discussed in this episode include I.S.S., Paul Thomas Anderson's filmography (particularly Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Licorice Pizza), and all the movies Oscar actually snubbed, like Past Lives, The Holdovers, Asteroid City, May-December, and The Iron Claw. Oh, and Men. Alex Garland's MEN. Coming up next month on the show, February Is For Lovers, and we will be treating it as such, as the four Fridays in Feb will see us cover Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight, before a month full of romance ends with canon consideration of Leslye Headland's modern rom-com classic Sleeping With Other People. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!! #HillaryBarbie

(soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta Possum is a 2018 British psychological horror film written and directed by Matthew Holness in his feature film debut, starring Sean Harris and Alun Armstrong. It centres on a disgraced children's puppeteer who returns to his childhood home and is forced to confront trauma he suffered there. Philip Connell, a disgraced children's puppeteer, is forced to return to his childhood home in Norfolk, which is shared by his decrepit uncle, Maurice. The home is in disrepair due to a past fire. Philip is haunted by a horrific spider-like marionette in his possession, called "Possum", which he keeps in a leather duffel bag. Throughout his time in Norfolk, he repeatedly attempts to dispose of the puppet, but it inexplicably returns to him each time. He recovers a picture book about Possum that he wrote and illustrated as a young boy depicting Possum's origins and how it creeps upon unsuspecting, orphaned children, intent on devouring them in their beds. Phillip frequently approaches a closed room in the house. Each time, Maurice asks if he plans to go in, to which he always replies no. Maurice frequently mocks Phillip during their interactions, such as mentioning the disgraceful circumstances that cost him his job and sadistically requesting that Phillip recount traumatic experiences of childhood bullying. He laments Phillip's attempts to dispose of Possum, reminding him that puppetry is something that runs in their family. News reports begin to surface of a missing local boy, Michael, whom Phillip initially encountered on the train ride to Norfolk. Authorities indicate that a man fitting Phillip's description is a person of interest in the disappearance. He revisits his childhood school, though he is discouraged from lingering by the school's staff and treated with suspicion by the local residents. He is also plagued by strange visions and dreams of Possum creeping up on him in bed. Phillip continues trying unsuccessfully to dispose of Possum—abandoning it in the woods, throwing it off a bridge, breaking it and sinking it off a dock, and even burning it—to no avail. The search for Michael in the papers causes Maurice to remark to Phillip that there was a similar case back then of a boy being assaulted by a masked man. When Phillip breaks down in tears, Maurice comforts him. As the search for Michael continues to mount, Maurice informs Phillip that he will be spending some time away and warns Phillip to not bring attention to himself, or trouble back to the house. In a period of distress, Phillip enters the school and requests that he be allowed to speak to his old form teacher, Mr. Grant. He tells the secretary that Mr. Grant "knew all about what had happened" and promised to go to the police with him. The confused secretary has him wait outside, but Phillip overhears her speaking with the principal about calling the police and he flees. As he runs, he finds himself chased by Possum, until he is seemingly overwhelmed by it, and passes out. Awakening, he returns home to find Maurice gone, but now has horrifying visions of becoming Possum himself.

00h 00’00” Proud lady 00h 03’25” Presentación 00h 05’05” Cabecera 00h 06’10” Inicio 00h 06’45” Chanson 00h 11’10” If it wasn’t for you 00h 15’37” Merci, Madame 00h 21’53” Bread 00h 29’10” Gifts of love 00h 34’10” Proud lady 00h 37’57” Look for that woman 00h 41’09” Chanson – Serenade 00h 46’14” Meadowlark 00h 54’39” Buzz-a-buzz 01h 00’37” Any day now 01h 07’49” The luckiest man in the world 01h 10’07” Feminine companion 01h 13’45” If I have to live alone 01h 19’35” Romance 01h 26’06” Where is the warmth? 01h 31’31” Scene 01h 34’02” Gifts of love 01h 35’35” Chanson (Finale) 01h 38’09” Curiosidades y anécdotas 01h 39’52” Endless delight – Patti LuPone & Kurt Peterson 01h 44’33” Bread 01h 47’42” Perfect every time 01h 49’34” What’s a man to do 01h 53’03” A little taste of Heaven 01h 58’02” Not in the market 02h 01’13” Plain and simple 02h 07’06” Where is the warmth?

The sequel to the 1999 surprising hit was once again directed and written by Stephen Sommers and sees all the original cast return and are joined by Freddie Boath, Alun Armstrong, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) in his first feature film. A decade after the events of the previous film, Rick O'Connell and his now wife Evie are back for another adventure. When an ancient bracelet is stolen by a mysterious cult, they must venture across the desert to stop them from using it to raise the “Army of Anubis” and rule the world. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film still had huge success at the box office and would see a prequel spinoff film the following year.

Of ja... tovenaar... First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on January 1st 2023 VISION ON SOUND's old friend SANDY McGREGOR is back again this week to take a look at another of the serious television dramas that he enjoys so much and likes to talk to me about. This time it's PETER FLANNERY'S epic nine-part drama OUR FRIENDS IN THE NORTH that he has been watching. It's a story based upon the original scripts created for a stage show version, written whilst FLANNERY was writer-in-residence at the ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY, and which, when it came to be produced, was such a huge production that it was allocated half of the BBC's DRAMA BUDGET for the entire year it was made in. The story unfolds across a quarter of a century. The story starts in 1964 and the TV version, unlike the stage play, which ends in 1979, takes the story on to the year 1995. The series follows the lives of four friends who grew up in NEWCASTLE, GEORDIE PEACOCK, NICKY HUTCHISON, MARY SOULSBY and TOSKER COX as played in career-making roles by DANIEL CRAIG, CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON, GINA McKEE, and MARK STRONG, in a variety of hairpieces and make-up. The series is set around the backdrop of seismic and significant political and social upheavals, and we meet these characters in several historically significant years as they grow up and grow apart, and as their lives continue to cross and diverge over the decades, and we witness the various triumphs and disappointments that they meet along the way. Much like in real life really. With a supporting cast of acting greats like PETER VAUGHAN, MALCOLM MACDOWELL, ALUN ARMSTRONG, DAVID BRADLEY, TONY HAYGARTH, PETER JEFFREY and DONALD SUMPTER on the roster, this was the definite “must see” event drama of the year 1996, and won the BEST DRAMA SERIAL BAFTA AWARD in 1997 with several of the actors also being nominated, alongside nominations in several technical categories. In 2022, the story was rewritten, and updated as a radio series for RADIO FOUR featuring different actors LUKE McGREGOR, JAMES BAXTER, NORAH LOPEZ HOLDEN and PHILIP CORREIA, featuring a tenth chapter written by ADAM USDEN which was set in 2020, so I think, like a lot of the very best sagas, this is a story that keeps on getting more fascinating as the years pass. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

How can you capture the mood of a country at war in a documentary? With a uniquely poetical, musical filmmaking style, artist and filmmaker Prof. Esther Johnson was commissioned by 14-18 Now to create "Asunder" - a uniquely moving and vibrant documentary which interweaves narratives from conflict overseas with characters in the North East. "Asunder tells the story of what happened to an English town during the First World War, with almost all of its men abroad fighting and its women and children left behind. The North East was in the front line, thanks to its shipyards and munitions factories." Our host Betty Ball meets Esther to hear all about the process of creating Asunder - poring over a hundred sources of archive material, working with renowned presenters Kate Adie and Alun Armstrong, and the composition of original music which makes Asunder such a distinctive WW1 documentary. Featuring original music from the soundtrack composed by Sunderland’s Mercury-nominated Field Music and Newcastle’s Warm Digits, performed with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and The Cornshed Sisters. --- --- --- Speak Up Sunderland is a podcast proudly produced in Sunderland, for Sunderland. THE THÉNARDIERS THE THÉNARDIERS- represent the lawless subculture of society. they own an Inn and cheat their customers. The novel portrays them as brutal and abusive figures; some adaptation transform them into buffoonish characters, to provide comic relief from the generally more serious tone of the story. Master of the house- at the Montfermeil inn [Mr.Thenardier:] Welcome, Monsieur, sit yourself down And meet the best innkeeper in town-As for the rest, all of them crooks: Rooking their guests and cooking the books-Seldom do you see Honest men like me- A gent of good intent -Who's content to be-Master of the house, doling out the charm -Ready with a handshake and an open palm-Tells a saucy tale, makes a little stir - Customers appreciate a bon-viveur-Glad to do me friends a favor Doesn't cost me to be nice-But nothing gets you nothing -Everything has got a little price!-Master of the house,- keeper of the zoo -Ready to relieve them of a sou or two-Watering the wine,- making up the weight -Picking up their knick-knacks when they can't -see straight -Everybody loves a landlord -Everybody's bosom friend -I do whatever pleases- Jesus! don't I bleed 'em in the end! [Mr. Thenardier & the Drinkers:] Master of the house, quick to catch your eye-Never wants a passerby to pass him by-Servant to the poor, butler to the great-Comforter, philosopher, and lifelong mate!-Everybody's boon companion-Everybody's chaperone [Mr.Thenardier:] But lock up your valises-Jesus! Won't I skin you to the bone!-Enter Monsieur, lay down your load-Unlace your boots, rest from the road-This weighs a ton, travel's a curse-But here we strive to lighten your purse-Here the goose is cooked-Here the fat is fried-And nothing's overlooked-Till I'm satisfied-Food beyond compare.- Food beyond belief-Mix it in a mincer and pretend it's beef-Kidney of a horse, liver of a cat-Filling up the sausages with this and that-Residents are more than welcome-Bridal suite is occupied-Reasonable charges-Plus some little extra on the side!-Charge 'em for the lice, extra for the mice-Two percent for looking in the mirror twice-Here a little slice, there a little cut-Three percent for sleeping with the window shut-When it comes to fixing prices-There are a lot of tricks he knows-How it all increases, all them bits and pieces Jesus! It'samazing how it grows! [Mr.Thenardier]: Master of the house, quick to catch your eye-Never wants a passerby to pass him by-Servant to the poor, butler to the great-Comforter, philosopher, and lifelong mate!-Everybody's boon companion-Gives 'em everything he's got-Dirty bunch of geezers-Jesus! What a sorry little lot! [Mrs. Thenardier:] I used to dream that I would meet a prince-But God Almighty, have you seen what's happened since?-Master of the house? Isn't worth me spit!-Comforter, philosopher' and lifelong shit!-Cunning little brain, regular Voltaire-Thinks he's quite a lover but there's not much there-What a cruel trick of nature, landed me with such a louse-God knows ,how I've lasted living with this bastard in the house! [Mr.Thenardier & the Drinkers:] Master of the house!- [Mrs. Thenardier:] Master and a half! -[Mr.Thenardier & the Drinkers:]-Comforter, philosopher [Mrs. Thenardier:]- Ah, don't make me laugh! []Mr.Thenardier & Drinkers:] Servant to the poor, butler to the great- [Mrs.. Thenardier:]-Hypocrite and toady and inebriate!- [Mr.Thenardier & Drinkers:] -Everybody bless the landlord!-Everybody bless his spouse! -Everybody raise a glass -[Mrs. Thenardier :] -Raise it up the master's arse -[All]- Everybody raise a glass to the Master of the House! Chris got the chance to speak with yet another absolute lad of a golden era in Sunderland's (sort of) recent history - former Sunderland full back and current Darlington assistant manager Mr Darren Holloway! What are we talking about this episode?Darren recalls his time as a youngster being brought in on the FA's Youth Training Scheme at Sunderland, and getting coached by the legends Monty, George Herd and Pop Robson;Chats about the differences between not only training methods back in the day, but the integration with the older lads, scrubbing boots, clearing up, getting stuck in where you could and that desire to prove yourself to those above you;Premier Passions; What was it like at the time having the cameras in around Roker Park during that relegation season?Being championed by Pop to get his chance at the first team, and endlessly working toward his goal to play professional first team football no matter what; His relationship with the Lads, that famous team spirit, getting looked after with the rest of the young lads down Seaburn and finally breaking through; His favourite moments at Roker and the SOL, making that transition after the Wembley disappointment to a new stadium, the incredible atmospheres at legendary matches, his unfortunate luck with his back injury and having to watch at times from the sidelines; His favourite players, playing behind the laziest midfielder in the world, the love he had for the game and the fans; His sudden and unexpected move to Wimbledon and how that came about; Did he want to leave or was he pushed, and struggling to deal with a situation he didn't want or expect to be in;His partnership with Alun Armstrong over Darlo and before that at Blyth, his love of coaching and earning his stripes in the lower tiers; as well as his thoughts on the struggles of the teams below the money in the FA pyramid...All this and so much more! Another great interview with a lovely lad that in our opinion should never have left. Sacko may agree...Listen in! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
