“How do we get people in the tent to even hear the story? With ‘Living with Ed' and other projects, we were a family they could identify with. We were yelling, laughing, loving each other while talking about real issues. I represented the average person's perspective on issues like taking the subway. There's the funny, and there's the conflict. If it's not entertaining, it's not going to connect.” Rachelle Begley on Electric Ladies Podcast Culture wars around climate change do more harm than good. As climate-driven extreme weather events become more frequent, proposed cuts to climate-related programs at the federal, state, or corporate level, pose a growing threat to public safety. The climate crisis is a safety issue – this isn't political. Fresh from The Earth Day Women's Summit at Earthx2025, listen to a live recording of a panel moderated by Joan Michelson about how we can find common ground in a climate crisis. It's become a bit of a cliché to say, ‘Do what you love, and everything will fall into place,' because it's not that easy. I try not to say no to opportunities. Instead, I try to say yes more and engage with other women, because women are incredible at supporting one another. Angélique Kidjo is a legendary Grammy-winning singer, a UNICEF international Goodwill Ambassador and one of the most lauded African artists of our time. By age 23, she made a very daring and lucky escape to Paris. Angélique joins Tom Power from our Montreal studio to reflect on her childhood in Benin, how she fled to France, and what that experience taught her about freedom of all kinds. Plus, she tells Tom why percussion has to come first when she's making music.

As you will have heard on many previous episodes of the podcast, with Marie Battiste, Carl Mika, Wakanyi Hoffman, Vanessa Andreotti and others, understanding the ways in which our colonial schooling systems have propogated one particular way of knowing our world, and excluded and often violently suppressed many others is something that I care deeply about. For me, it has to be a key part of any transformative work that we do to, with humility and curiosity, to reorient education systems. But in order to do this, we need people who are able to gather and convene the critical conversations that put these ways of knowing in dialogue with each other. It is therefore the greatest honour to have Professor Catherine Odora Hoppers joining me on the podcast this week. For her entire career Dr Hoppers has been at the forefront of facilitating these vital conversations. In post-Apartheid South Africa, she designed and enabled the process that led to the first national policy on the recognition, development and protection of indigenous knowledge systems. Professor Catherine Odora Hoppers is a scholar and policy specialist on International Development, education, North-South questions, disarmament, peace, and human security. She is a UNESCO expert in basic education, lifelong learning, information systems and on Science and Society; an expert in disarmament at the UN Department of Disarmament Affairs; an expert to the World Economic Forum on benefit sharing and value addition protocols; and the World Intellectual Property Organisation on traditional knowledge and community intellectual property rights. She got a Masters and PhD in International Education from Stockholm University, Sweden. In South Africa, Professor Hoppers was awarded Professor Extraordinarius in 2019 at University of South Africa (Pretoria). She held a South African Research Chair in Development Education at the University of South Africa (2008-2018). Prior to that, she was a technical adviser on Indigenous Knowledge Systems to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Arts, Culture, Science and Technology (South Africa) and led the Task Team to draft the national policy on Indigenous Knowledge Systems. She is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf, 2002), and was a member of the Academy of Science Special Panel on the Future of Humanities (South Africa). She was the Goodwill Ambassador for Makerere University in Kampala Uganda; and Ambassador for Non-Violence at the Durban Universities' International Centre for Non-Violence. In July 2015, she received the Nelson Mandela Distinguished Africanist Award from HE Thabo Mbeki for her pursuit of the total liberation for the African continent through the promotion of Indigenous Knowledge Systems of Education and in the same year, Prof Hoppers was awarded “Woman of the Year” by the University of South Africa, and was named as a “Leading Educationist” and was honoured in the Gallery of Leadership as the 63 most influential people who have shaped Unisa since its inception in 1873, in a permanent exhibition in Kgorong Building in UNISA. In 2017, Professor Hoppers received the distinction from UNESCO as an Honorary Fellow in Lifelong learning. She is the Founder and Director, Global Institute for Applied Governance in Science, Knowledge Systems and Innovations (https://www.giagsi-ug.org/the-faculty/). She held a Professorship in Education at Gulu University (Uganda) and is now the Canada Research Chair in Transdisciplinarity, Cognitive Justice and Education as part of the Pluralism Strategy Initiative at the University of Calgary (https://www.ucalgary.ca/pluralism/scholars-educators-researchers).She is the author of many important works including the book, Rethinking Thinking: Modernity's "other" and the Transformation of the University with the late Prof. Howard Richards.https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=qWEKG-QAAAAJ&hl=en
This talk examines the role of science in the Islamic world, tracing how modern science has roots in Islamic civilization. It explores whether we have lost key aspects of the scientific process that was established during this era. Beginning in the 8th century, Islamic scholars contributed through a unique triangle of innovation, using deep imagination to solve pressing social challenges. Today, there is growing evidence that we are losing this imaginative power and becoming disconnected from our social compass. Profitable advancements in medical, energy, and communication technologies may not be fully serving humanity. Speaker Hayat Sindi, Founder and CEO of the Institute for Quality (iQ), Goodwill Ambassador for STEM at UNESCO, and an Honorary Fellow at Newnham College, Cambridge University

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks! Many thanks to Renee Fleming, Grammy Award Winner, recipient of the National Medal of Arts, and renowned soprano who has brought the experience of classical music to millions of fans. In 2023, the World Health Organization appointed her as Goodwill Ambassador for Arts and Health. Renee is also the editor of a new book: "Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness." During our 20-minute discussion, Renee discusses her upbringing in a musical household. Her parents were high school voice teachers, and it was natural for her to sing and learn to play a musical instrument. As time passed, she became more passionate about learning to sing. Other than music, she stated that her only other career choice was to become the First Lady President of the United States! But it wasn't until her late 20s that she discovered she had a "beautiful" voice. When she had somatic pain that impaired her singing, she discovered that scientists were studying music and the brain. After a discussion with Frances Collins of the National Institutes of Health, she curated the book, "Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness." Renee has become a cheerleader for the scientific study of music and the concept that "the arts should be embedded in healthcare." Renee Fleming also wrote another book, "The Inner Voice," about learning to sing. It guides young singers and their families through the process of becoming a professional singer. A lot of chefs say they want to preserve landscapes, but Rodrigo Pacheco of Bocavaldivia in Puerto Cayo on the coast of Ecuador at is actually doing it. He is literally acquiring land and re-wilding it, in the hopes of turning it into the world's largest biodiverse edible forest.I first met the guy about 10 years ago at a conference in Quito. At the time, all the contemporary Ecuadorian chefs were trying to get international attention and get on lists and get famous. Then there was Rodrigo, who could care less about those things. It was still early on this project on a remote beach, but he was already talking about connecting with nature and utilizing biodiversity. He seemed totally out of place. It was still early in the life of Bocavaldivia. The 100 hectares of land he bought, a former pepper farm, was heavily degraded. Much of the surrounding tropical dry forest was cut down. There was little wildlife there. But in a decade, he has turned it into a thriving landscape, which, through the accrual of new land, now reaches up to the cloud forest. I was there earlier in the year and I saw it with my own eyes. He now uses more than 150 different edible plants from this landscape throughout the year on his menu. While the heart of Bocavaldivia is a restaurant, where he and his team cook from a rustic wood fired kitchen adapted from native ones, and serve tasting menus alongside nice wines, to call it just a restaurant would be lacking. The experience there involves a journey. Many hours before eating you start to experience the landscape. You traverse them by fishing in the sea and tasting termites off a stick and hiking through the trees. You connect with it before you sit down and eat. And when you do sit down, there isn't some long, drawn out explanation of what you are eating, because you've lived it.Lots of other projects that spin out from Bocavaldivia. He has a restaurant in Quito called Foresta. He was on the Netflix cooking show The Final Table. He has created a mini-documentary series with indigenous leaders. He is a Goodwill Ambassador in Ecuador at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. He started a foundation. He says because he lives in the middle of nowhere that he has a lot of extra time on his hands that most other chefs don't. It's funny how the less busy you are sometimes the more you can get done. I'm still trying to figure out how that works.

This time I'm joined by author Cathy Kelly - Cathy is a former journalist whose debut novel, Woman To Woman, became an instant number one bestseller. Since then, she has published 22 novels, which have sold millions of copies globally. She has been a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF Ireland since 2005 and has visited many countries to report on UNICEF's work. When not writing with a small dog nestled at her back, she reads voraciously, dances round the kitchen, travels pillion on a motorbike, has a variety of textile art projects on the go and pretends to Marie Kondo the house. Cathy's latest novel Sisterhood is - of course - about two sisters - Lou and Toni. Lou is someone who habitually puts herself last…until the events that unfold at her 50th birthday party push her to stop pleasing other people and decide to finally put herself first. This prompts us to discuss how commonly those of us coming up to 50 are prompted to examine our lives, sometimes interrogating what we have been putting up with and questioning, asking ourselves… “What am I for?” Cathy also talks about her own treatment for cancer - another life inflection point that makes you question everything… We move on to talk about the appeal of historical novels and Cathy is kind enough to share a few recommendations for books that she has loved recently: the Cazalet Chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard (https://www.panmacmillan.com/blogs/fiction/cazalet-chronicles-books-in-order) and A Discovery of Witches https://deborahharkness.com/all-souls-world-home/the-all-souls-world-books/ (and I mention one of my all time favourite historical novels: https://historicalnovelsociety.org/reviews/the-needle-in-the-blood/) Cathy calls out the misogyny and snobbishness around fiction written ‘by women, for women, about women's lives' and we touch on the evolution of the so-called ‘chick lit' writers now hitting their 50s and writing about this new age and stage of their lives. We also head off on a few tangents, reminiscing about carefree pre-Internet times and 80s fashion! Find out more about Sisterhood at https://harpercollins.co.uk/products/sisterhood-cathy-kelly?variant=40276782973006 - out in hardback now, and in paperback in March 2025… If you enjoy the podcast and would like to help me keep it running (on a shoestring!) please consider buying me a ‘virtual coffee' at Ko-fi.com/middlingalong - or you can support me in a non-monetary way by sharing this episode, or writing a short review online! Ireland has joined a European-wide effort to underscore the importance of plant health. The #PlantHealth4Life campaign is led by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the European Commission (EC), and is active in 22 European member states. PlantHealth4Life, European Initiative Speaking about the campaign, Senator Pippa Hackett, Minister of State for Land Use and Biodiversity with special responsibility for Horticulture at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine said: "We are proud to stand alongside our European partners to raise awareness of the profound interdependence between plant health and our collective well-being. This collaborative effort is a unique opportunity to engage citizens from all walks of life - be it the intrepid traveller, the conscientious gardener, or the vigilant parent - in safeguarding plant health." Ms Louise Byrne, Chief Plant Health Officer for Ireland, added that the Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine conducts comprehensive inspections on imports of regulated plants and plant products. Importantly however, a critical element is educating the public across all spectrums, from commercial importers to amateur gardeners on the need for heightened awareness of the issues at stake and to not attempt to import unchecked plants and plant products that pose a risk to Ireland. The campaign urges travellers not to bring back any plants, flowers, seeds, fruits, or vegetables from outside the EU, as these items may harbour plant pests or diseases detrimental to native flora. Additionally, consumers are advised to buy plants and seeds online only if accompanied by a valid phytosanitary or plant health certificate. Embracing good plant hygiene practices and promptly addressing signs of plant pests or diseases in home gardens and communal outdoor spaces will also prevent their spread to neighbouring plants and natural habitats. Speaking on Ireland's involvement in the campaign, leading Irish garden designer Diarmuid Gavin, who was appointed as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations' Goodwill Ambassador for Ireland in May 2022, said: "Safeguarding Irish plant health is paramount. As gardeners, we hold the power to effect change - by allowing our gardens to flourish naturally, propagating your own plants from seeds, sourcing plants responsibly, and vigilantly monitoring for abnormalities, we can collectively protect our botanical heritage." Tobin Robinson, Head of EFSA's PLANTS Unit added: "Plant health impacts not only the environment, the economy, and the European food chain but also our present and our future - by keeping plants healthy, we are protecting life. It is therefore a source of pride to see how Europeans are engaged in the topic, as demonstrated by the unprecedented participation of Member States in the #PlantHealth4Life campaign." Claire Bury, Deputy Director-General for Food Sustainability of DG SANTE stated: "Informed European citizens armed with accurate information on plant health can help protect and preserve our biodiversity. Plant health is a priority for the European Commission within the One Health approach. By informing people about the importance of not importing pests into the European Union and empowering them with the knowledge to take appropriate actions, we can make a difference." Visit the #PlantHealth4Life campaign at www.efsa.europa.eu/en/plh4l and discover how to safeguard plant health. About the campaign #PlantHealth4Life is a multi-year and multinational campaign developed at the request of the EC and based on an in-depth analysis of perceptions and behaviour on plant health across the EU. This year, the campaign involves 21 Member States and a candidate country, doubling the reach from the previous year: Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Montenegro. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with the son of the Legendary Audrey Hepburn, Sean Hepburn Ferrer About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Sean Hepburn Ferrer, is the son of one of the most talented, respected, revered and beloved cinematic legends and humanitarians: Audrey Hepburn. In classic films like “Roman Holiday”, “Sabrina”, “War and Peace”, “Funny Face”, “Love in the Afternoon”, “The Nun's Story”, “Breakfast at Tiffany's”, “The Children's Hour”, “My Fair Lady”, “Wait Until Dark” and many more, Audrey Hepburn dazzled, inspired and enchanted us. And she captivated our hearts with her iconic beauty, vulnerability, sincerity and incomparable empathy, which underscored and motivated everything she did. She received 5 Academy Award nominations and won the Oscar for Best Actress for “Roman Holiday”. And after her passing, the Academy bestowed the Jean Herscholt Humanitarian Award upon her, posthumously, which our guest accepted on her behalf. Audrey Hepburn was one of the first people to be an EGOT winner. She won an Oscar, a Grammy, an Emmy, and 2 Tony Awards. She also won dozens of other awards including 3 BAFTA Awards and 3 Golden Globe Awards, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award. And the American Film Institute named her the third greatest female screen legend of all time. She was the first celebrity to have her own fragrance, called “L'interdit”, created by Givenchy in 1967. But beyond all of that – beyond her iconic beauty, glamour, fashion sense, elegance and warmth, there was Audrey Hepburn the monumentally generous humanitarian. She was the truly the walking definition of “the milk of human kindness”. She never forgot that, immediately after the war, an organization which later became UNICEF, brought food, medicine and clothing to her community in Holland, where she lived as a child during the Nazi occupation. And so, in the last 6 years of her life, as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF, she made numerous trips to the world's most impoverished and war-torn countries, especially in Africa, advocating passionately and tirelessly on behalf of the children being devasted by disease, famine and genocide. President George Bush Sr. presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of her contribution to humanity. And if you go to the UNICEF Headquarters in New York, you will see a beautiful statue called “The Spirit of Audrey”. Our guest, who is the son of Audrey Hepburn and the iconic actor, director, producer and writer, Mel Ferrer, has had a successful career in the film industry for many years. Shortly after his beloved mother passed away in 1993, he and his brother Luca created he Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund, a charity that continues the humanitarian work and honours the legacy of his dear mother. He's been touring the world with his exhibition, entitled "Intimate Audrey", raising funds for his non-profit organization. In 2003, he released a wonderfully poignant book entitled, “Audrey Hepburn: An Elegant Spirit: A Son Remembers”, and all of his royalties went to the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund. And in 2020, he and his wife Karin, published “Little Audrey's Daydream”, a children's book about his mother's childhood in Nazi-occupied Europe. Proceeds from the book benefit the European Organisation for Rare Diseases. In today's world, the term "ecology" often evokes images of sacrifice, expense, and inconvenience. In this final episode of our Climate Solutions series, renowned explorer and environmentalist, Bertrand Piccard explains why focusing on ecology is not only profitable but also exciting.Piccard is best known for his groundbreaking achievements in exploration: flying around the world in a solar-powered airplane and circumnavigating the globe in a hot air balloon. These adventures allowed him to witness the beauty and fragility of our planet firsthand, instilling in him a deep sense of responsibility to protect and preserve it. Talking to host, Sue Stockdale, who is also an explorer, Bertrand discusses the importance of giving ourselves permission to invent our future, highlighting how we are often trained to remain in our zone of comfort, which ultimately limits our potential for adventure and growth. He emphasises the need to step outside of our certainties and embrace the unknown in order to create the life and society we want and shape the future we desire.About Bertrand Piccard : Clean Tech Pioneer- Founder and President of the Solar Impulse FoundationBertrand Piccard is a pioneering spirit and an influential voice to encourage the implementation of efficient solutions. As one of the first, as early as the 2000s, to consider ecology from a profitability perspective, Bertrand Piccard is considered an opinion leader on the themes of innovation and sustainability. As President of the Solar Impulse Foundation, he promotes qualitative growth by demonstrating the economic potential of clean technologies. Denouncing the absurdity of the polluting and inefficient systems still too often used today, he pleads for the modernization of the legal framework in order to facilitate market access for efficient solutions. His voice is heard within the most important institutions, such as the United Nations, the European Commission, the World Economic Forum and his commitment has earned him several nominations, such as Champion of the Earth, and Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations.Connect with Bertrand Piccard via Twitter @bertrandpiccard and @solarimpulse and the Solar Impulse websiteKey QuotesI was born and raised into that vision of running scientific expeditions to protect the environment. It's wrong to say the sky is the limit. The real limit is the fuel.I wanted to identify in the world all the efficient solutions that are economically profitable to be able to protect the environment. We explore with my foundation, the best solutions, we explore new ways to make them known, we explore new ways to implement them, to create an enthusiasm around these solutions.Ecology is not anymore something expensive, boring and sacrificial. It is something exciting. It is something economically profitable. It's something that can bring people together. You have to give an incentive to people to change. If you see somebody who is afraid of changing, you have to show him that he has inside of himself all the tools, all the resources, all the potentials that can help him to do something differently. We have to show him that it's better to do it in another way. There was a time in exploration when it was new continents, then it was new planets. Now it's really how to live better on this planet, how to protect our planet, how to improve the quality of life, how to find new solutions. When we speak of solutions, it's important to understand that most of the time it's not high-tech solutions, it's common sense.Partners and SupportersWe partnered with the Royal Scottish Geographical Society to bring you this series. After escaping and finding refuge in the United States, Ger was catapulted to prominence in the entertainment industry with notable roles in the films 'I Heart Huckabees', 'The Good Lie', and the recent, Cannes-debuted 'Goodbye Julia.' He also wrote about his experiences and journey in the book, 'Walk Toward the Rising Sun.' True to his roots, Ger used his newfound fame to become an ardent advocate for refugees, mental health support for displaced individuals, and African environmental responsibility. Having served as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, he recently took on the leadership of the Advocacy, Corporate Engagement, and Stewardship program at Newday Impact Investing, which is devoted to corporate education and outreach to support individuals displaced by the climate crisis. You can learn more about Ger Duany and how to support his work at https://www.gerduany.com/.
