From a Ken Doll in fatigues to "action figures" with kung fu grip to an afterschool cartoon and finally to... a live action theatrical release! It's 2009's G.I. JOE: RISE OF CORBA. The fictional President is nameless, but is he also faceless? (Well...technically, yes, in a way, but we'll get to that...) THE MUMMY'S Stephen Sommers directs a cast of literally thousands (of names). Every character (except for The President) has at least two names, some have three. It's needlessly complicated. But is the nefarious plan of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's The Doctor aka Cobra Commander aka Rexford "Rex" Lewis also needlessly complicated? (Yes, yes it is. Very much so.) Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, Rachel Nichols, Sienna Miller, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dennis Quaid, Lee Byung-hun, Arnold Vosloo, Ray Park, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and an uncredited Brendan Fraser star alongside Sir Jonathan Pryce as the faux potus. The sequel to the 1999 surprising hit was once again directed and written by Stephen Sommers and sees all the original cast return and are joined by Freddie Boath, Alun Armstrong, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) in his first feature film. A decade after the events of the previous film, Rick O'Connell and his now wife Evie are back for another adventure. When an ancient bracelet is stolen by a mysterious cult, they must venture across the desert to stop them from using it to raise the “Army of Anubis” and rule the world. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film still had huge success at the box office and would see a prequel spinoff film the following year.

Take a trip back with us to 2016, when there was just only 1 Suicide Squad movie and almost every girl was Harley Quinn for Halloween. We're talking about 2016's Suicide Squad starring Will Smith as Dead Shot and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, the two standout characters in this ensemble. Director David Ayer brings together this fun cast is full of standout actors like Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne, Jai Courtney, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Jared Leto. Hyped and well marketed, will this be a movie theatre regret or a Blockbuster fave? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/loyaloats/message

"Should men cry?" is a question that literally no one asks anymore because we all know that the correct answer is "of course, as long as it's done in the right way", that is to say that it's expressed in a manner which continues to conform to society's expectations and understanding of masculinity and male vulnerability. Shedding tears from extreme physical pain is permitted as is using it as part of a cheap seduction routine, exactly as Sidey's friend did during a screening of TITANIC which he still feels so bitter about some 20 years later. But will that movie make it into this week's Top 5 Crying scenes? I wouldn't have thought so but let's see what the Dads offer up. Howie chose this week's main feature, John Michael McDonagh's THE GUARD, a buddy cop crime caper with a strong cast. Brendan Gleeson, probably best known for his work as Victor in THE SMURFS 2 received acclaim for his contribution alongside Don Cheadle (SWORDFISH) and Mark Strong who played Dave Summers in 1998's THE MAN WITH RAIN IN HIS SHOES. Yes, as you can possibly tell by now I haven't actually seen this movie or indeed heard of it before today which makes writing this part of the show notes tricky. At the risk of trivializing what may be a great movie I've never heard of before and am yet to enjoy, all I really want to know is does Don Cheadle do a silly Irish accent? I often find myself wondering whether centaurs still exist is another way of saying I've literally never had that thought before but there's no doubt some nutballs out there somewhere who can provide charts and diagrams and theories proving the part human, part horse creatures were in fact real and actually still are. Netflix's CENTAURWORLD also boasts a list of great and varied performers with the likes of Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit and Arrested Development's Tony Hale working alongside Jamie Cullum, Wendy Malick and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje in an animated series exploring the strange world inhabited by these truly disgusting and unnatural abominations. We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. Try us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Until next time, we remain... Believe it or not, Brian and TJ sat down to do a FlyBy - not only that, they saw three movies starring one character; Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). They watched: 2016's Suicide Squad, based on the DC Comics supervillain team of the same name. Written and directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Scott Eastwood, Karen Fukuhara, Ike Barinholtz, and Cara Delevingne. Sadly they actually watched the extended version of this "movie." They followed up with a movie that went through an identity crisis in 2020's Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), or Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey or simply Birds of Prey based on the DC Comics team, the Birds of Prey and serves as both a spin-off and sequel to Suicide Squad (2016). It was directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson, starring Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Rosie Perez, Chris Messina, Ella Jay Basco, Ali Wong, and Ewan McGregor. And finally, they tackled the movie people on Twitter have been talking about for weeks (so why not add fuel to this fire); 2021's THE Suicide Squad, a standalone sequel to Suicide Squad (2016). Written and directed by James Gunn and stars an ensemble cast including Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, and Peter Capaldi. The gang discuss everything from Steve and Izzy's absolute undying love of this film, all of the insane accents, terrible CGI lava, the love story between Peter and Amy the gorilla, Delroy Lindo's cameo and much more. Hello and thank you for downloading another episode of The Flixters Podcast! This week on the show the Flixters are bringing you some deep films to watch. We've got reviews of Farming, the directorial debut of British actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. It tells the story of ‘Eni' a terrific performance from Damson Idris, a British Nigerian, ‘farmed' out to a white foster family in 60s London. Based on Adewale's own life, Farming is an honest and often brutal look at race, identity and what it means to be black growing up in multiracial Britain in the 70s and 80s. Next, is The Vast of Night. The directorial debut of Andrew Patterson. It follows two friends as they try to uncover the mystery behind a strange signal coming from somewhere above during the 50s America. The film is mysterious, eerie and at times, suspenseful. But is it any good? Find out by downloading the show! On Anniversary Corner we look back at: Blood Done Sign My Name, Guess Who, Freedom Song, Higher Learning and The Long Walk Home. On Hidden Gems we bring you Fruitvale Station (2013). The directorial debut of Ryan Coogler (Creed, Black Panther), is hard-hitting and based on true events which saw the murder of 22 year-old African-American, Oscar Grant by a police officer. The film depicts that fateful last day of Oscar's life, played brilliantly by Micheal B. Jordan (Creed, Black Panther). This film is powerful on any given day, but with everything that is happening world-wide, we think it deserves to be seen even more so. Go check it out. If that wasn't enough for you we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on Blu-Ray/digital download and streaming. And don't forget to listen till the end of the show for a special Flixters prize for one lucky subscriber :) Thank you for supporting us and we hope you enjoy the show!

For Ryan's pick The Mummy Returns (2001), the star of our theme month takes a back seat as we examine the eternal love of Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) and Anck-Su-Namun (Patricia Velasquez). Use “HAPPILY1” to save 20% and orders over $35 get free domestic shipping! The mummy Imhotep is revived once again by a cult of followers and a reincarnated version of his lover Anck-Su-Namun. Their goal: to ensure their immortality by capturing the power of the ancient Scorpion King. To do so, they steal an artifact from Rick and Evie (now a married couple), kidnapping their eight-year-old son in the process. Then it’s a race to the Scorpion King’s resting place that will determine the fate of the O’Connells’ son, the world, and our two star-crossed villains. Stars Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, Arnold Vosloo, Patricia Velasquez, John Hannah, Oded Fehr, Freddie Boath, Alun Armstrong, Dwayne Johnson, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Shaun Parkes. (@BlkGirlsDoStuff) SHOWNOTES: Welcome to Collateral Cinema Season Three! We wanted to start off with something a little more contentious: Beau, Robert, Ashley, and Dakota don't actually agree on how we feel about the 2016 DCEU superhero (or supervillain) movie Suicide Squad, directed and written by David Ayer! Which of us wholeheartedly agrees with the generally negative critical consensus? Which of us feels there's something of value here to be apologists for? Which of us just likes that custom-made Joker car? Listen to find out! This Season Premiere, Collateral Cinema discusses the questionable cinematography, well-chosen but not-so-well-implemented soundtrack, mixed-reception casting, and the problematic reshooting and editing process that happened in the production of Suicide Squad. We also make comparisons on the part of Jared Leto's Joker performance against the many others (including Joaquin Phoenix' recent portrayal in the standalone titular movie), as well as this movie as a whole to its obvious Marvel counterpart and cinematic adaptation inspiration Guardians of the Galaxy from James Gunn—and on that note, predictions of where Gunn will take the announced sequel/soft reboot The Suicide Squad set in the DC Extended Universe, in addition to what we expect from the upcoming sequel Birds of Prey! There's a lot to dig in here, and a lot to harp on in this film, but most importantly, did we have fun talking about it? Collateral Cinema is on Apple Podcasts, Chill Lover Radio, and wherever else you get your podcasts. Also, find us on Patreon; we have exclusive full-length commentaries on our favorite movies and plan more to come! (Collateral Cinema is an LCompany Production. Intro song is a license-free beat.
