This week, we sink our claws into Ginger Snaps (2000), a dark, coming-of-age horror story that turns puberty into a full-blown monster movie. What starts as a tale of two outcast sisters quickly spirals into a blood-soaked exploration of transformation, identity, and the brutal side of growing up and growing apart. We're talking werewolves, womanhood, and why Ginger Snaps still stands as one of the most honest and gnarliest depictions of teenage horror ever made. It's moody, messy, and magnificently macabre...just how we like it.Timestamps5:21 - Negronomicon14:41 - Crit1:04:50 - Final CurlsGems from Ep. 114The Mummy (1999)The Mummy Returns (2001)Scream 5 (2022)Scream VI (2023)Ready or Not (2019)The Family Plan (2023)The Family Plan 2 (2025)The Deliverance (2024)The Whale (2022)Rental Family (2025)The Mummy (2017)The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)Twilight (2008)Romeo Must Die (2000)Paper Mario (2001)The Mummy (1932)Frankenstein (2025)Frankenstein (1931)Ginger Snaps (2000)Trick r' Treat (2007)She's the Man (2006)Freddy vs. Jason (2003)American Mary (2012)Carrie (2002)Carrie (upcoming, television series)Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed (2004)Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning (2004)Final Destination 3 (2006)Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)Smallville (2001)Edward Scissorhands (1990)Pleasantville (1998)The Monstrous Feminine (Barbara Creed, Routledge, 1993, Print)Being Human (2008, television series)Van Helsing (2004)An American Werewolf in London (1981)Jennifer's Body (2009)Heavenly Creatures (1994)Yellowjackets (2021, television series)Cube (1997)Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (2013, video game)Luigi's Mansion 2 HD (2024, video game)Support the show

Chris has gone big with his next pick, Van Helsing, Universal's flashy attempt to revive their classic monsters for a modern blockbuster audience. Directed by Stephen Sommers, hot off the success of The Mummy films, the project was designed as both a gothic action spectacle and a potential launchpad for a wider franchise. With a hefty budget of around $160 million, the film spared no expense on lavish sets, elaborate costumes, and state-of-the-art visual effects to bring together Dracula, Frankenstein's monster, werewolves, and more in a single monster-mash universe. Universal saw Van Helsing as a tentpole production that could recapture the energy of their golden age monsters. The production itself was an enormous undertaking, with filming spanning locations such as Prague, Paris, and a host of detailed soundstages built to recreate grand gothic landscapes. ILM and other VFX houses were tasked with delivering cutting-edge digital effects, while Hugh Jackman, in the title role, underwent intense training to perform many of his own stunts. Despite all the ambition and money thrown at it, Van Helsing was met with mixed reviews upon release — critics praised the spectacle but criticised its overstuffed narrative and heavy reliance on CGI. Still, it's a fascinating example of early-2000s Hollywood excess, where studios swung for the fences trying to build franchises before “shared universes” became the norm.If you enjoy the show, we have a Patreon, so become a supporter here.Referral links also help out the show if you were going to sign up:NordVPNNordPassTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a time when monsters walk the earth… one man hunts them all. Hugh Jackman is Van Helsing — the ultimate warrior against evil. Armed with gadgets, grit, and a grim sense of duty, he'll face Dracula, werewolves, Frankenstein's monster, and a horde of nightmares that refuse to stay dead. With danger around every corner and darkness closing in, the battle between man and monster is about to erupt in a gothic showdown like no other. This summer… evil has met its match.Fun FactsThe enormous set for Dracula's castle was one of the largest ever constructed at Prague's Barrandov Studios, showcasing Universal's investment in the film's gothic style.Director Stephen Sommers insisted on practical stunts wherever possible, leading to Hugh Jackman doing many of his own wirework sequences. The vampire brides' flying scenes were achieved with a mix of motion capture and practical harness work, which was notoriously difficult for the actresses to perform. The film's werewolf transformations were a blend of prosthetics and CGI, considered cutting-edge at the time, but often criticised for looking dated only a few years later.Dracula's three brides were modelled after classic vampire lore, but with a modern twist — Sommers wanted them to feel like “supermodels crossed with banshees.”The production team used more than 1,500 visual effects shots, making it one of the most VFX-heavy films of 2004.Kevin J. O'Connor, who played Igor, was a longtime collaborator with Sommers, having appeared in both The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. The iconic horse-drawn carriage chase scene was filmed on massive outdoor sets in the Czech Republic, with many practical explosions added to heighten the chaos.Universal Pictures released a tie-in video game for Van Helsing on PlayStation 2 and Xbox, voiced by Hugh Jackman. The film's attempt to revive Universal's monster legacy would later inspire the failed “Dark Universe” reboot attempt with The Mummy (2017).thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Deepest apologies. Those responsible have been sacked. Other topics include many Horus Variants, a Peregrine Falcon PSA, Young Horus as a symbol of hope, a very cool-sounding festival tradition that was probably pretty meh actually, strategic connections to godly iconography, a side tangent about sixth grade social studies, and Horus being a big, fat cheater. The Summer of Rock begins as Laci and Matt dive into the movie career of Dwayne Johnson with his first leading role in The Scorpion King (2002). The Rock first graced the big screen a year earlier in The Mummy Returns, in a brief prologue in which he plays a character who seemingly has nothing to do with the sturdy nice fellow he plays in Scorpion King. And now he gets to lead a picture. And what a picture. An old-fashioned picture, you might say. One refreshingly free of irony, self-awareness, or any of the oppressive trappings of modernity. This movie's kinda great, actually. And so is The Rock. Is it possible his career peaked with his first feature? We shall find out in the weeks and months ahead. Bonus video: Matt explains why all movie studio CEOs are basically the exact same guy and why they all make the exact same decisions. Award-winning actress, history-making supermodel, staunch philanthropist, conscientious activist, author, and loving mom Patricia Velásquez applies an eternal creative spirit to everything she does-whether it be starring in blockbusters a la The Curse of La Llorona or launching the Wayúu Tayá Foundation and participating on the UNESCO Board. Regardless, she makes major strides by drawing on instinct and deliberately paving her own path. Patricia's success represented a turning point in fashion as she drew industry attention to South America for the first time. She experienced a big break upon becoming "the first model Karl Lagerfeld ever photographed" and going on to walk in shows, star in editorial spreads, and front ads for Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Chloe, Cover Girl, and Victoria's Secret, to name a few. Resonating around the globe, she appeared in Oprah and Ford Models' "Supermodel of the World" contest as well. Not to mention, she graced the covers of Vogue, Bazaar, Marie Claire, and many others. She artfully channeled her dance training during shoots. Simultaneously, she ignited an impressive acting career. Not only did she star in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, but she also appeared on The L Word, Arrested Development, CSI: Miami, Ugly Betty, List of a Lifetime, Hawaii 5-0 and Rescue Me. Throughout her career, she capitalized on every opportunity to give back. In 2002, she founded the Wayúu Tayá Foundation. This non-profit preserves the culture of indigenous groups throughout Latin America by way of support and the drastic improvement of living conditions. UNESCO invited her to be a celebrity advocate, and the United Nations granted her the 2009 Women Together Award. Want to watch: YouTube Meisterkhan Pod. (Please Subscribe)

It is a privilege to welcome actress and dancer Sarah Alexandra Marks to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast. Sarah was born in Essex, England. She trained as a dancer, going on to perform at prestigious venues, most notably the Royal Opera House. She transitioned to screen acting and appeared on various television shows, including Kosmos, The Midnight Hour, and Doctor Who: Fractured Timeline. On September 30, she will star in Howard J. Ford's Escape. The film stars Marks, Sophie Rankin (Bermondsey Tales and DarkGame), and Sean Cronin (Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation and The Mummy Returns). Escape focuses on ten trafficked women who, after being abducted from a remote island resort, find themselves in the clutches of a ruthless criminal gang. Desperate to survive in the harsh desert, two women devise a bold escape plan, igniting their fight for freedom. "Working on Escape, more specifically with Howard J Ford, was a breath of fresh air - he is a wonderful director to work with, every day, every scene, every moment carries meaning and passion. Collaborating with him on this film reinvigorated me as an artist and performer,” said Marks. "With Howard's trust, I could explore my character freely and easily. I truly believe this helped me be present in each moment, both on and off camera. The cast and crew were phenomenally hard-working and a pleasure to unwind with after days in the sand. The film captures shots of the desert that would make Sergio Leone fans happy and those who love full-blown action are in for a treat." On this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Sarah Alexandra Marks previewed Escape and reminisced about dancing on the Royal Opera House stage and appearing in Doctor Who: Fractured Timeline.Let's connect on social media! GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra is a somewhat successful live-action adaptation of the beloved GI Joe cartoon and toy line. It's a big, loud, dumb, and, at times, very fun action film. Most of the adjectives above will come as no surprise for fans of Stephen Sommers–he of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns fame. The DNA of what made those films such enjoyable adventure romps is here. Unfortunately, so is his penchant to go too far over the top. *Cough* Van Helsing. What Sommers gets wrong in this, he basically butchers. Eschewing common series lore in favor Hollywood tropes, GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra loses some of the magic from the property, turning off longtime fans and general audiences in the process. Despite there being internet murmurs that this movie, and Sommers' career prospects, deserved better, this one underperformed at the time of its release. It grossed just $302.5 million on a budget of $175. Critics also sent it the Slaughter House. It sits at 33% on Rotten Tomatoes with 169 reviews. But, hey, there is a good time to be had here, as long as you don't think too hard about it. After making The Mummy and The Mummy Returns, Stephen Sommers wanted to make a small movie; no monsters, no action, no visual effects, just something simple, but then he started thinking about all the Universal monster movies he loved as a child, and came up with a collective story of three monsters, connected by one man - Van Helsing - but not the Abraham Van Helsing you knew....Gabriel Van Helsing would be serving alongside Dracula with the Knights of the Holy Order before having to kill him. He would ask for his memories to be removed to purge himself of his sins, and end up walking the Earth for 400 years with no memories and end up at the Vatican. Hugh Jackman, fresh from playing Wolverine in X-Men, would be Van Helsing, and when Universal realised what they had, thoughts of a franchise appeared in front of them...It would be Universal's Dark Universe, before Universal's Dark Universe....I would love to hear your thoughts on Van Helsing (2004) !CONTACT....
