Thanks for tuning into the Scale Your Small Business Podcast with your host, Jillian Flodstrom! Today's an exciting day, as we're welcoming our first guest to the show. Joining us this week is James Gardiner, he's a high-performance athlete who helps entrepreneurs face their challenges, uncover their secret sauce, and help their lives and businesses thrive. This week, he's breaking down his success and how he uses Conscious Leadership to help people find theirs. James first found his interest in helping entrepreneurs achieve because he saw the similarities between his own, competitive, high-performance mentality and theirs. Entrepreneurs are creative, driven minds, and there's no secret why many high performance athletes end up being coaches and business advisors. With that, some of the same challenges are presented for both high-performance athletes and high-achieving entrepreneurs. Everyone comes to the table with his or her own unique skillset, strengths, and of course, challenges. It's about wearing multiple hats and learning how to juggle the different balls of what it means to be in business for ourselves, to be of service, and also to run a business. Following through on each of those can be difficult. On the other side of the spectrum are those who only do follow-through, and lose sight of the bigger picture. So, how do we combat those challenges? James points to a constant process of assessing, reassessing, course correcting, and moving forward. This helps to mitigate some of those challenges and within those challenges, understanding or labeling the severity of them. Which are my bleeding artery challenges? Which are my just kind of nicks that are like a paper cut? Have a group of team members that you consult throughout to stay on track. Hand in hand with that is personal growth alongside professional growth. Misalignment will always show itself, always. It's about understanding what gets you out of bed in the morning. We were all a young Beethoven once, and we had the ability to create our Ode to Joy, our masterpiece. James feels like we owe it to ourselves to take that journey. If anyone knows the mentality between athletes and entrepreneurs, it's James. For him, it's an unwavering discipline towards a commitment, towards a contract with your soul. a true athlete understands all that encompasses how they show up in that sports arena. Why do I do the training I do? What effect does certain training have on my physiology? In the same way, taking into account everything that makes up being a successful entrepreneur is paying attention to how you're developing alongside the work you do. Everything that needs to go into having a vision, to creating a tangible concept of that vision, bringing people in possibly to champion the final product needs to be considered. It's about showing up every day, but it's about balance. James reminds us of the importance of not needing external validation to equate your internal (and actual) value. You can't take anything with you when you die, so it's vital that you pay attention to areas that need it. Build in the ability to pause. If you find yourself on the struggle bus and aren't sure where to make that bus go, James says to get crystal clear. Ask yourself, what do I want? What does it look like? How does it make me feel? Anchor those questions in emotion. Don't get caught up in the big step--take as small of a step as you need to move forward. There are folks out there that just don't want to do what it takes to get the result that they want. The same way there are very few people who put in the work to become a professional athlete, it's the same with entrepreneurs. As Jill calls it, “Destination Procrastination.” Reach out to James Gardiner on Instagram and Facebook, and visit his website at theherowithin.ca to schedule a complimentary 45-minute hero discovery call. Have you experienced a darkening sky in your life? When you find yourself there, do you shine brighter for it, or flicker out? Esther's life seemed to be a downward spiral of difficulties. But she continued to shine brightly for God in the unbelieving kingdom of which she was now queen. As Jill takes you through the amazing story of Esther, a simple Jewish girl made queen, you will see that you, too, can be empowered by God to keep shining his light, even in an ever darkening sky.

As we grow and evolve, it is crucial to revisit some topics. These topics may look different for each person, but what I know to be true is that we all deal with head trash. That’s why I’ve decided to post episode 103 here as an encore episode, but with a little twist. What I have discovered is that through this journey, I’ve learned even more about this topic of head trash and listening to this episode again has brand new meaning. “Head Trash” is the most downloaded episode to date and it surprised me as it is a pretty heavy and “heady” discussion. But what that has shown me is that this topic has to be revisited. It is so easy to get lost in those negative thoughts, so let’s revisit the head trash and work on our mindset together. The little voice. The inner roommate. Negative Nancy. Head Trash. Whatever you call it, we all have it. Whether or not it is dominating our lives, is up to us. Wouldn’t it be great if we could just kick this voice to curb? Of course! Is it that easy? Absolutely not. Most of the time, we don’t even know these negative thoughts are in control. In order to get a handle on this head trash, we need to know what it is, how it got there, and how to flip it around. In this episode of Be You, we’ll do just that. After learning about what head trash is and how it can manifest itself in your life, I’ll also give you three takeaways that will have a positive impact on how you feel and how you show up in life. It isn’t another affirmation. It isn’t a one-day homework assignment that will fix it all. It is a journey. Your unique journey to being you. Show Notes: [2:54] - We are here to learn and evolve together. There’s outside work that has to happen in order to get that result. [4:59] - As Jill has grown through this podcast journey and her learning through a coaching program, she has discovered that this is the topic that needs to constantly be revisited. [7:38] - Mindset is an important conversation to have and unless we go into the body and also release the trauma when we interpret an event, this episode can only get you so far. [8:57] - After Jill recorded the original Head Trash episode, she has learned even more about the body. [10:26] - Jill wants listeners to find value in this podcast. How can you help the community? [15:00] - There are tons of names for what Jill calls “head trash,” but whatever you call it, it is that negative voice in your head. Everyone has it. [15:39] - It sounds great to just kick this voice out, but there’s more to it than that. [17:03] - All of these thoughts start in a part of our brain that we don’t know is in control. [17:54] - Maybe you are thinking that you don’t have this voice, but Jill assures us that everyone does. For those who feel like they don’t have head trash, right now your subconscious is not running the show. [18:57] - One way that we get this head trash in our brains is by childhood experiences. When we are children, our developing subconscious brain sees everything as true and then becomes a filter through which we see things later on. [19:41] - Another way we get these negative voices is through things that other people say to us that become painful. [20:40] - Jill gives some examples about how certain relatable experiences can turn into head trash. [22:38] - We may not remember these experiences as adults, but they are stored in the subconscious and show themselves in our feelings. [24:32] - Jill shares a real-life example about her childhood memories of hearing her parents arguing non-stop about money. [26:11] - Not only did Jill start to think that money was bad because it causes arguments, she also started to long for money because she had learned through her parents’ arguments that money brings happiness. [27:15] - Jill had the drive to earn money but she also had the limiting belief that money was bad which led her to not being able to keep it. [28:48] - We walk through life unconsciously seeing everything through a lens we have created through our experiences. [29:16] - This is our own reality. Then we become detectives searching for evidence that everything we believe is true. [30:33] - If you’re going to make your external reality match your internal reality, you are going to sabotage everything. Jill gives examples of how this can affect you. [31:14] - Jill admits to spending many years putting emphasis on the meaning she creates about her experiences than actual facts. [32:51] - For those of you who know of these experiences and know that you are seeing things through a distorted lens, what are you doing to change your negative thoughts? [34:31] - Are you getting negative results from your hard work? Or are you having great results, but still don’t feel fulfilled? Deep down, you have a limiting belief that is telling you that you are not enough. [35:33] - All of our limiting beliefs boil down to the fear of not being enough. [36:33] - A lot of us are simultaneously afraid of being not enough and being too much. [37:15] - All of this shows up in our lives and manifests physically, too. Jill gives examples on how this might happen. [38:37] - Limiting beliefs also manifest financially, especially if you have head trash surrounding money. [40:33] - Jill shares that head trash will show up in our inner circle, our finances, and our closest relationships. Jill illustrates this with true stories and examples. [42:34] - We experience things in life today that will trigger and open these old wounds and stories that were planted in our brains and we don’t even know it. [43:42] - The five people you spend the most time with as your inner circle are attracted to you and are a mirror to you. Why did you attract them? Do you need to make some changes to your boundaries? [44:48] - You can’t just do affirmations and simply get over these stories and experiences. [45:51] - How do you feel about your inner circle? Are they growing with you? What boundaries do you need? [46:45] - Jill’s first takeaway is to identify your head trash in words. [47:15] - The next takeaway is to write out the exact opposite of your head trash beliefs. Restate your negative beliefs in the positive. [48:18] - The third takeaway is to become a detective. Collect evidence for your newly positive beliefs that you wrote down. [48:52] - Because you choose to look for this evidence, you will see it. It is now in your awareness. [50:29] - Before you go to sleep after collecting evidence for a day, write down how it felt. [51:31] - In the beginning, this will feel weird and unnatural, but with practice and repetition, you will see this evidence more naturally and everywhere you go. I know there was something in this episode that you were meant to hear. Let me know what that is. Thank you for being here today with me on our healing journeys. We’ve all weathered weeks of quarantine, and we're focusing on resilience! We turned to our friend Jill, who runs a small company — 6 staffers plus 4 freelancers — because when the country’s shutdown took most of her business with it, she was faced with the choice to panic or persevere. As Jill shares, all her personal pursuits and her commitment to self-care kept her out of panic and guided her pivot. Her state of being kept her open to inspiration and creativity, which led to new solutions that have her staff super-busy instead of worried. She talks about how moving out of her normal fear/anxiety mindset freed her up to think clearer and see the possibilities. We hope listening will help inspire new ways to make lemonade when you’ve got a surplus of lemons. Disclaimer: Everything we share here is for educational purposes. Simplifying Your Acquisition Process (1069) Transcript: Steven Butala: Steve and Jill here. Jill DeWit: Good day. Steven Butala: Welcome to the Land Academy Show, entertaining land investment talk. I'm Steven Jack Butala. Jill DeWit: And Jill DeWitt, broadcasting from sunny Southern California. Steven Butala: Today Jill and I talk about simplifying your acquisition process. Seems like a silly little topic, but who doesn't want stuff to be more simple? Jill DeWit: I agree. I want to have more of a conversation. Is that okay? Steven Butala: Yeah. Jill DeWit: I'm just kind of changing it up right now, because I know we talked about that, so, thank you. Yeah, who does not want things to be more simple? I agree. Steven Butala: Before we get into the topic, and before I make a butthead out of myself talking about marriage and stuff like that, let's take a question posted by one of our members on the landinvestors.com online community. It's free. Jill DeWit: All right. James asked, "I'm thinking of buying a few 40 acre parcels surrounded by BLM land. I went to check out the properties. There's dirt paths that lead to them, but there are signs that say no motorized vehicles. Has anyone tried to get permission from the BLM to drive over these trails? Not sure if I should offer a really low price for these, or just not even do the deal." Steven Butala: Okay, so this is a great question. It's something I've run into personally, not super, super recently, but I've also talked to some of the advanced Land Academy members, and they've run into it also. This is, for sure, an attribute to this property. It's not a bad thing. It makes the properties that you're looking at incredibly unique. So on the onset of it, especially if you're brand new at this, you're like, "Wait a minute, I can't take a car into my property?" As Jill knows, and most of the ... if you've done a few deals or have some experience, there's people that want to buy rural, vacant land to just get away from it all in the craziest possible way. The more creative you are about satisfying what they want from a customer standpoint, the more successful you're going to be. Steven Butala: What you need to do though is contact the BLM to get like a hundred year ingress-egress rights. Hopefully the person before you, the seller, has done that. We all know working with the government's pretty tough and frustrating. But I'll tell you my personal experience with getting a least easement, I'm not exactly sure what the ... I think it's just ingress-egress. Least ingress-egress is ridiculously simple with the BLM and very cheap. It's like you can get like a 99 year lease. Jill DeWit: Okay. So I have a couple things to say. Steven Butala: Jill's just- Jill DeWit: I'm just letting you go, and then I want to say- Steven Butala: When do you not let me ... just let him go. Let him go. Jill DeWit: I know. I always just let you go. Let him go. Steven Butala: Eventually he'll be done. Jill DeWit: Exactly. Okay. That's all beautiful, Steven. That's the legal way to do it. I have a couple things to say. First of all, why aren't you just checking out the property? Isn't it a whole lot easier to ask for forgiveness instead of permission? Steven Butala: You know what, that's the reality of it. Jill DeWit: So do I really want to draw some attention to the fact that I'm even out there in the beginning? Heck no. Am I going to sneak out there and do what I need to do? Yeah. Just to check it out. Oh yes. All day.

Jill Cody – Seduced and AbandonedAired Tuesday, 4 June 2019, 5:00 PM EST / 2:00 PM PSTThe “Velvet Coup” That Cost Us Our Democracy, and How We Get It BackInterview with Jill Cody, Radio Host and Author of “America Abandoned”“Our commonwealth has been hijacked by a small percentage of the uncommonly wealthy and now we the people must ‘higher-jack” it.” — Swami BeyondanandaIn the early 2000s, my friend and colleague Joseph McCormick was going through a dark night of the soul. A hardline conservative, former Army Ranger and a Christian Coalition member, he had just lost a Congressional race in Georgia, and he found himself on a spiritual retreat in a cabin in rural Virginia. While there, he was “adopted” by a band of hippies, and he had an epiphany — that fundamentally, all of us really want the same things, except we’ve been divided by habit and tribalism. He decided his mission was to “reunite America.” He got a grant and set about to interview luminaries across the political spectrum, asking one question: What ails America, and how do we fix it?His interviewees, ranging from Ralph Nader and Noam Chomsky on the left, to Ross Perot and Grover Norquist on the right, pretty much all said the same thing: Citizen engagement. We the people have become disengaged from the political process, and only by re-engaging can we rebalance the balance of power.Well, here we are fifteen or so years later, and we seem more divided than ever. Those who are engaged, tend to be polarized to one side or the other. The media accentuates the polarities so that political conversations tend to create a lot of heat, and very little light. The good news is that more and more Americans are awakening from the dueling dualities puppet show, and recognizing that we now need to engage in an entirely new way, independent of the two political parties. Instead of “following” parties or candidates, we the people need to LEAD the conversation. Our guest this week, Jill Cody is a citizen advocate, award-winning author, and radio host. She’s held a life-long passion for knowledge and a will to inspire change in politics, the environment, higher education, and organizational development. During Jill’s 31-year career in public service, she saw our democracy slipping away in slow motion. This observation inspired her to research what happened that ended up explained in her international award-winning book, America Abandoned: The Secret Velvet Coup That Cost Us Our Democracy.Prior to that Jill was personally trained and authorized by vice president Al Gore to share his “An Inconvenient Truth” presentation with schools and community groups across Silicon Valley. Her passion for educating anyone who would listen, led her to write Climate Abandoned: We’re on the Endangered Species List published this past Earth Day and became a #1 Amazon Bestseller.Currently Jill hosts a bi-weekly radio show “Be Bold America!” on KSQD 90.7FM serving the Monterey Bay and the world, to discuss ideas on how to reunite this country and save our democracy. As Jill examined her own family history and the role “abandonment” played, she recognized that the American people have been seduced by the American dream, and then abandoned by those who hold the real power. And now, we must re-engage as a more awakened and wiser body politic. Breaking Down Your Business | Small Business | Business Owners | Entrepreneurship | Leadership
What’s In This Episode: It's a new year! Are you ready to go or are you kind of crawling into 2019 a little bit burnt out? If you're the latter, Brad's got a 5-day email course that he wants you to read, called 5 Days to Get Control of Your Business and Your Life. In it, you'll find a simple exercise to cut down your work hours down immediately, a magic phrase that improves the output of your team and empowers them to solve their own problems, a proven practice to enable you to set boundaries, and a way to start fitting in things that you enjoy. If this is something you're interested in, you'll find it here (https://anchoradvisors.com/control/). Sign up and let Brad know what you think! "Are you paying attention to the bigger picture?" - Jill Are you working in your business vs. working on your business? Now, you hear that everywhere - but in the beginning, it was a reasonable question. And how would you know if you're working in or on? Jill's issue with the question is that it assumes there is a right answer. In Brad's view, he thinks the goal should be that there's nothing that has to get done this week (as in a deadline) that he - as the business owner - is responsible for doing. "When you're in the details, it's hard to have any perspective." - Brad Brad uses Monday mornings to organize, and then by Monday afternoon, he knows what his objectives for the week are. He's not opposed to switching back and forth (from working in your business vs. working on the business) but he cautions against getting stuck on details. As Jill is going through some changes in her business, Brad thinks that's great: we can only make changes as fast as people can absorb it.
