The Ghost Furnace - Episode 145 "Groundhog Day"   "...Now on this February 2nd, Punxsutawney Phil, the seer of seers, the prognosticator of all prognosticators, was awakened from his wintry nap at dawn on Gobbler's Knob..." Every year in a small Pennsylvania town, thousands of people stand for hours in the predawn cold to catch a glimpse of a 100+ year old groundhog. They are not only kept warm by the ceremonial dancing, the locally brewed beer, the VFW pancakes and the company of a secret order of marmot wranglers. But chiefly by the hope, that this small brown woodchuck will gaze into the either and divine an early spring.    If you have a story you'd like to share, you can find us on Instagram, YouTube and TheGhostFurnacePodcast@gmail.com

#StillServing: The VFW Podcast

Host Rob Couture welcomes Ryan Gallucci, Brittany Dymond Murray, Nancy Springer, and Gabby Kubinyi for a wide-ranging advocacy roundtable covering the latest veterans policy updates from Capitol Hill and beyond.   The conversation begins with a major update on the Major Richard Star Act, including the VFW's new three-part Action Alert strategy aimed at pushing Congress toward a long-overdue public hearing. The panel explains why hearings matter, what's driving resistance, and how advocates can keep the momentum going.   Next, the team breaks down major developments in the fight against "claim sharks," including recent state-level enforcement actions and legislation designed to crack down on predatory companies charging veterans unlawful fees for claims assistance.   The episode also highlights the VFW–Student Veterans of America (SVA) Legislative Fellowship and the fellows' new action alert supporting H.R. 1965, which would increase the book stipend and tie it to inflation. Nancy Springer recaps her testimony before the House VA Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs, emphasizing survivor-focused legislation and the power of veterans' stories in shaping policy.   Finally, Ryan shares insights from overseas engagements with VFW National Commander Carol Whitmore, including visits to service members and partners in Germany, Poland, and Kosovo—reinforcing why the VFW remains committed to supporting those still serving abroad.   Links:   Action Corps Weekly: https://www.vfw.org/advocacy/grassroots-efforts/vfw-action-corps-weekly  VFW-SVA Fellowship: https://www.vfw.org/assistance/student-veterans-support/student-fellowship  VFW Voices of Service - Stories in Action: https://forms.gle/3R4toepnSpDFLpvU6    Featured Guests:   Ryan Gallucci – Executive Director, VFW Washington Office Brittany Dymond Murray – Associate Director, VFW Public Affairs & Strategic Outreach Nancy Springer – Deputy Director, VFW National Legislative Service Gabby Kubinyi – Associate Director, Grassroots Advocacy, VFW National Legislative Service   Episode Highlights:   0:00 Intro and Roll Call 4:11 Major Richard Star Act update 18:21 Claims sharks progress and enforcement updates 28:14 VFW–SVA Legislative Fellowship and H.R. 1965 39:52 Nancy Springer testimony recap 58:41 Overseas engagement: Germany, Poland, and Kosovo 1:21:25 Good of the Order

But the trip takes an unexpected emotional turn when Michael realizes he's the last surviving member of his five-person family—no one left to share these memories with. Host Rob Couture opens the first episode of 2026 with VFW leaders for an in-depth discussion on veteran policy priorities and emerging national security issues.  The episode centers on the Major Richard Star Act, breaking down why the bill was left out of the National Defense Authorization Act, clarifying misconceptions about cost and jurisdiction, and explaining why the Armed Services Committees play a critical role in advancing the legislation. The panel outlines the VFW's updated advocacy strategy and how members can help push the bill forward through targeted engagement and calls for congressional hearings. The discussion also highlights key provisions of the FY26 National Defense Authorization Act, including pay raises, quality-of-life protections, blast exposure oversight, and moral injury research, while noting advocacy priorities that remain unfinished. Additional segments address concerns over proposed VA disability rating schedule revisions, a major legal development involving claims sharks, and a recent U.S. Postal Service policy change that could impact veterans submitting benefit claims by mail. The episode closes with reflections on the recent U.S. military operation in Venezuela, recognition of newly eligible combat veterans, and reminders of the VFW's ongoing commitment to protecting veterans' earned benefits and honoring continued service. We welcome members of the VFW Washington Office for a roundtable on advocacy, benefits delivery, and showing up for veterans where it matters most. Leaders from National Legislative Service and National Veteran Service discuss how frontline experience shapes VFW's work on Capitol Hill. The episode opens with updates from recent VFW congressional engagement, including a House roundtable on veterans' data protection and claims fraud tied to predatory practices and AI-generated nexus letters. The panel also reviews Nancy Springer's recent testimony on more than two dozen veterans-related bills focused on benefits reform, appeals modernization, and expanded access to care. The conversation turns to the VFW's Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) program, highlighting how accredited service officers help transitioning service members avoid mistakes, overpayments, and fraud. Real-world examples show how early engagement protects long-term benefits, health care access, and financial stability. The episode also looks beyond policy to leadership and service, featuring reflections from a Medal of Honor reception ahead of the Army–Navy Game. Highlights from VFW's Army–Navy tailgates underscore how visibility and camaraderie help connect the next generation of veterans to the organization. ===== MDJ Script/ Top Stories for December 12th Publish Date:  December 12th    Commercial: From the BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Friday, December 12th and Happy Birthday to Frank Sinatra I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal Pedestrian safety improvements coming to south Cobb Gateway Marietta CID seeks public input on 12 projects The Georgia Ballet Presents: The Nutcracker Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on milk As well as Shane Delancey the Director of the Christmas Tradition at the Strand Theatre All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  Now here is Shane Delancey the Director of the Christmas Tradition at the Strand Theatre BREAK: THE STRAND STORY 1: Pedestrian safety improvements coming to south Cobb  Cobb County’s making moves to keep pedestrians safer in south Cobb, tackling two big projects: a pedestrian bridge near Factory Shoals Road and new bollards at Mableton Town Square Park. Let’s start with Factory Shoals. That bridge over I-20? Built in 1963, and, well, it shows. No sidewalks, no bike lanes—just a narrow shoulder that’s barely walkable. Commissioner Monique Sheffield said it’s been a problem for years, especially for folks working at nearby businesses. Now, the county’s greenlit a plan for a new pedestrian bridge alongside the old one, connecting sidewalks on both sides. And Mableton Park? Bollards are coming to stop cars from driving onto the grounds—because, yes, that’s been happening. STORY 2: Gateway Marietta CID seeks public input on 12 projects  The Gateway Marietta CID wants your thoughts—yes, yours—on 12 infrastructure projects they’re planning. These aren’t just random ideas; they’re focused on Franklin Gateway, South Marietta Parkway, and Delk Road. What’s on the table? Everything from streetscapes and trails to bridge replacements and new road connections. Some projects, like the Rottenwood Creek Trail extension ($20 million!) and Franklin Gateway bridge rebuild, are already in motion. Others, like adding Gateway signage or narrowing roads for multiuse trails, are still in the “what do you think?” phase. Your input will help shape what gets prioritized. Got opinions? Take the survey before the master plan wraps next year. Visit engage.publiccoordinate.com/en/project/gateway-marietta-cid-project-prioritization. STORY 3: The Georgia Ballet Presents: The Nutcracker  The Georgia Ballet’s The Nutcracker is back, running Dec. 18–23 at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre, and it’s bringing all the holiday magic you’d expect—plus a little extra sparkle this year. Here’s the twist: they’ve teamed up with Hamp & Harry’s, a Marietta Square favorite, to add some festive flair. Think Nutcracker-themed cocktails (yes, there’s wine and beer too) in the lobby before the show and during intermission. The ballet itself? Pure enchantment. Tchaikovsky’s iconic score, Clara’s midnight adventure, snowflakes, sweets, and Daet Rodriguez’s choreography. There’s even a Sensory-Friendly performance on Dec. 18—perfect for kids or anyone needing a gentler experience. Tickets start at $23. Don’t wait. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.  We’ll be right back. Break: Villa Rica Wonderland Train STORY 4: North Cobb Christian student wins statewide essay contest  North Cobb Christian seventh-grader Samille Shy just snagged first place in Georgia for her essay, “What Is Patriotism to Me?”—a big win in the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen contest, which had over 120,000 entries nationwide. Samille’s take on patriotism? It’s about giving back. She wrote about volunteering at a food pantry, helping out at The Humane Society, singing with her school chorus on Veterans Day, and being part of the Sea Cadet Corps. The Georgia VFW loved it, awarding her top honors. Next stop? The regional competition. Not bad for a middle schooler, huh? STORY 5: McEachern rolls into state championship game  Every time McEachern scores, the announcer calls out the updated score. And when the opponent has zero? Oh, the crowd lives for it. They stretch it out—“zerooooooo”—like it’s a victory chant. They’ve had plenty of practice. Over the last two seasons, McEachern’s flag football team has gone 51-2, allowing just 2.9 points per game with 35 shutouts. Monday was no different. The Indians blanked Lithia Springs 19-0, then crushed North Forsyth 33-0 to punch their ticket to the state championship at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Now, McEachern heads to the championship, chasing back-to-back titles. GEORGIA TECH: No. 22 Georgia Tech is heading to the Pop-Tarts Bowl to take on No. 12 BYU on Saturday, Dec. 27, at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. Kickoff’s at 3:30 p.m., and you can catch it live on ABC. This marks Tech’s third straight bowl trip—something they haven’t pulled off since 2012-14—and their 48th all-time, which ranks 14th in college football history. With a 9-3 record, it’s their best regular season since 2014. BYU (11-2) comes in hot, despite two losses to Texas Tech. It’s a ranked-vs.-ranked showdown, Tech’s first since the 2014 Orange Bowl. History’s on their side—they’re 2-0 in this bowl. I'm Keith Ippolito and that’s your MDJ Sports Minute. And now here is Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on milk We’ll have closing comments after this. Brandon Christensen is a Canadian filmmaker and VFX artist whose directorial work includes Night of the Reaper, Superhost, Puppet Man, and VFX work on multiple films with a particularly close collaboration with Joe Begos on VFW, Bliss, Jimmy and Stiggs, and Christmas Bloody Christmas. In this conversation, Brandon walks through the making of Night of the Reaper, his latest film, which is a nostalgic 80's style slasher with very heavy Halloween vibes. Brandon also gets into how to consistently make films with limited resources, why he takes on editing and VFX himself, and how to achieve compelling period production design on a budget.Key TakeawaysDesign period detail around what exists. To create an authentic 1980s vibe without a big period budget, Brandon's team scouted unchanged locations, bought used furniture and TVs, and leaned on production people who could find pockets of the past. When money is limited, good location scouting and clever prop reuse do most of the heavy lifting.Wearing many hats saves money and shapes the film.Brandon edits and does VFX on his films because it keeps the money on screen and lets him really control everything from tone to pacing. This equation means lower overhead and a highly personal imprint on every frame, but be cautious because it also makes criticism sting even more because much more of the work has been done by you. So if you take on multiple roles, expect both the creative control and the emotional cost.Make the movie you can actually make.Brandon survived multiple financing setbacks by refusing to let the project die. When previous investors walked, he scaled down the project according to the money that existed. The result was a finished film rather than a stalled ambition. Practical lesson: prioritize completion over perfection because careers are contingent on forward momentum and experience. His repeated, practical advice to creators: do not overcomplicate your first projects. Shoot small, fail quietly, learn fast. The path deepens by doing, not by waiting for the perfect package or deal.Show NotesMovies MentionedNight of the ReaperSuperhostPuppet ManStillbornIt Stains the Sands RedVFWBlissJimmy and STIGsChristmas Bloody ChristmasHouse of the DevilStranger ThingsWhen a Stranger CallsScreamRosemary's BabyDonnie DarkoPulp FictionAvengers: Infinity WarWeaponsFollow Brandon Christensen at:IMBd: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3417134/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thebrandonchristensen/X (Twitter): https://x.com/thebrandonc85Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brandonchristensendirector/Website: http://thebrandonchristensen.com/

Host Rob Couture and co-host Brittany Dymond Murray sit down with Kristina Keenan, Ryan Gallucci, and Glenn Umberger, VFW Junior Vice Commander-in-Chief, to break down the key legislative and administrative issues currently affecting America's veterans. Keenan recaps her recent congressional testimony, highlighting concerns about VA proposals tied to Medicare Advantage, as well as the growing problem of predatory companies misguiding veterans seeking disability benefits. Send us a textHeadlines say the VA system is broken and rife with abuse. Our conversation with Marine veteran Clayton Sims tells a different story—one grounded in lived experience, policy fluency, and a community-first approach to getting claims right without fear or costly consultants.Clayton shares how a rough transition and a hurried VSO visit pushed him to learn the language of 38 CFR and the evidence behind service connection. We unpack the realities of infantry life—miles in boots under load, daily wear that wrecks feet, ankles, and backs—and why conditions like flat feet and sleep apnea aren't punchlines, they're predictable outcomes. We also go deeper than combat. MST, toxic command climates, uneven medical boards, and administrative limbo can all drive mental health injuries that are real and compensable when documented properly. We cut through the noise about “rampant fraud” with data: far fewer veterans file than most assume, and only a portion reach 100 percent. The bigger problem is confusion. Clayton maps the routes that actually win—direct, secondary, aggravation, presumptive, MUCMI—and the kinds of evidence that matter: deployment health assessments, awards narratives, buddy statements, specialty opinions, and clear medical links. He explains how CivDiv helps veterans self-advocate or meet VSOs prepared, flipping the script on an industry that profits from complexity. If you've felt overwhelmed by forms and jargon, you'll walk away with a clearer path and a stronger mindset. And beyond claims, Clayton leaves a vital reminder: don't isolate. Find your circle—online, at a VFW, through church, or with a few trusted friends—because community can save time, money, and lives. If this resonated, follow the show, share it with a veteran who needs it, and leave a review with your biggest question about VA claims. Your story might guide our next episode. The stories and opinions shared on Stories of Service are told in each guest's own words. They reflect personal experiences, memories, and perspectives. Send us a textThe story begins where many people stay silent: a brutal childhood, a foster system that felt like survival training, and the desperate need to belong somewhere that demanded the best. Daniel Odell found that place in the Army, even as he served in a role many overlook. As a cook in Iraq, he learned how a hot meal and five minutes of kindness could hold fear at bay. He also chased perspective—volunteering for flights, witnessing the shock of medevac tents, and carrying images that didn't fade when the noise stopped.Stateside, ambition met accident. Advanced training led to a fall, a damaged spine, and a season of hiding pain to avoid failing the mission. One blunt truth from a leader—if someone died picking up your slack, you'd live with that—reframed what duty meant. The next chapter was slower and darker: repeat therapies, heavy meds, and a mind that wanted out. A surgeon refused to promise miracles, only a tiny improvement. That centimeter of motion and a surge of feeling in his fingers were enough to break the cycle. Fate then brought a partner with paws: a white standard poodle trained to help and impossible to ignore, complete with a green “hat” dyed on his head. The Fluffy Poodle got Daniel out of the house and into conversations that mattered. What finally stopped the noose was a line from a fellow veteran: ending your life would be a disservice to those who never got the chance to come home. That sentence anchors Daniel's mission today. We walk through how he built Motafate (motivate.com), turned daily recovery into purposeful content, and scaled service through social media. From practical PTSD coping tools and service dog training to adapting routines for chronic pain, this episode is a guide for veterans and civilians navigating trauma, transition, and identity. We also share the Today Show surprise that celebrated his ongoing service and the communities—American Legion, VFW, church groups—where healing becomes possible. If you've felt alone in the aftermath of trauma, this conversation offers steps, not slogans.
