A hedge fund job that started with weeding a garden? Colin Page's career story is unique, but the lessons are practical for anyone building a fee-only financial planning firm.We sit down with Colin, founder of Oakleigh Wealth Services in Charlottesville, Virginia, and trace his path from teaching high school math after the 2009 financial crisis, to more than a decade investing in distressed securities and bankruptcies, to launching his own independent practice. We talk about what changes when you move from markets to people. Colin shares why hedge fund work can feel disconnected from real goals, and what pulled him toward fiduciary planning for retirees and near-retirees: retirement income, tax-efficient withdrawals, Medicare choices, and legacy planning. We also get specific about the messy early decisions every advisor faces around niche, marketing, compliance, and building a firm without an existing book.Colin breaks down the mental game too: pricing "head trash," choosing between AUM, advice-only, and flat-fee models, and designing onboarding that respects your time. His document-first consultation approach is a simple filter that signals seriousness and keeps a lifestyle practice sustainable as referrals grow.If you're trying to build a practice that supports your life, not the other way around, this one is worth your time.Subscribe for more conversations with fee-only advisors, share this with a friend building their firm, and leave a review so more people can find the show. Sermon by Steve Fry as part of the "Head Trash" series.
The final installment of the "Head Trash" series. Sermon by Steve Garrett.
Don't follow the gospel of false certainty. Watch now.
Many believers struggle with destructive thought patterns or head trash - lies we believe about God, ourselves, and others that create cycles of anxiety, depression, and spiritual bondage. Through real stories of healing, we see how God uses various means, including prayer ministry, counseling, Scripture memorization, and community support, to bring freedom. The key is to identify these lies and replace them with God's truth about our identity as His beloved children. Practical tools like morning surrender, renouncing lies in Jesus' name, and daily affirmations help break generational patterns and overcome repeated struggles with worry, fear, and self-doubt.
Peter's struggle with head trash - wrong thinking patterns driven by fear of others' opinions - shows how even spiritual giants can be derailed by insecurity and shame. Despite experiencing miracles and being filled with the Holy Spirit, Peter's fear of what certain people thought led him to deny Jesus and later withdraw from Gentile believers in Antioch. This behavior threatened the Gospel mission itself and hurt those around him. Paul's confrontation helped Peter recognize that true freedom comes from enthroning Christ above others' opinions and embracing our identity as God's chosen people. When we know who we really are in Christ, we can love deeply without being driven by fear of shame.
Many people struggle with feeling insignificant when they consider the vastness of the universe, leading to what we call head trash - wrong ways of thinking about God, the world, and ourselves. Psalm 8 reveals the correct perspective: we live in a big world where we are small, but we have tremendous significance to God. David acknowledges God's majesty and the vastness of creation, then asks what mankind is that God would be mindful of them. The answer is that God has crowned humanity with glory and honor, making us rulers over His creation. While we may not be the center of the universe, we matter deeply to the One who is the center of the universe. The key to overcoming lies about our worth is through praise and worship, which helps us see reality clearly and embrace both our smallness and our God-given significance.

In this episode, Matt and Micah discuss the concept of 'head trash' that financial advisors often face, particularly around income, effectiveness, and capacity. They explore the idea of a 'money thermostat' that limits advisors' perceptions of their success and the importance of recognizing real limitations versus self-imposed barriers. The conversation delves into the fear of prospecting and how it can hinder growth, emphasizing actionable steps advisors can take to overcome these challenges and deliver more value to their clients. A lifelong problem solver and serial entrepreneur, Tish helps leaders identify the internal obstacles that prevent clear thinking, strong decisions, and consistent execution. We explore Tish's journey from founding the first-ever dog daycare business in 1997 to building a career in human capital consulting and leadership development. Along the way, she uncovered a recurring leadership challenge: people often know exactly what to do—but don't do it. That insight led to HeadTrash and the Mental Headspace Framework, a practical system for understanding and managing the emotions that silently sabotage performance. Tish explains how everyday emotions are not inherently negative, but become destructive when they cross the line and begin to manage us. She walks through the **seven HeadTrash emotions—control, insecurity, arrogance, paranoia, anger, fear, and guilt—**and shows how leaders can recognize when emotions cloud judgment, stall decisions, and create chaos inside organizations. The episode also explores how HeadTrash shows up in entrepreneurs as shiny-object syndrome and non-listening, and how leaders can manage emotional reactions in themselves and others without suppressing or “fixing” them. — Important Links: Tish's LinkedIn Tish's website Tish's email: tish@candor-consulting.com

Today, Dr. Noah St. John is here to challenge everything you thought you knew about why some people thrive and others get stuck. If you want to level up your success in any area of your life, the first thing you must do is to change your mindset. Dr. Noah is going to show you how to conquer the "head trash" that holds us back, break through income plateaus, and unlock results.Meet Dr. Noah St. JohnDr. Noah has been teaching clients for 30 years and is credited with helping them add a collective $3 billion in revenue. He has written 25 books on the subject and has helped individuals and organizations ranging from 100 to 10,000.Inner Game vs. Outer Game: The 80% RuleDr. Noah argues that success is at least 80% about your "inner game". The inner game is everything happening in your mind, including the beliefs and stories you tell yourself. While "outer game" activities like making calls and sending emails are important, Dr. Noah emphasizes that mindset is the true bottleneck for most people.Clearing Out the "Head Trash"Dr. Noah defines "head trash" as the internal voice that says, "I can't because...". This self-limiting dialogue is what prevents sales professionals and entrepreneurs from reaching their full potential. He explains that by identifying and clearing this mental clutter, you can stop proving your own limitations right. From $4 Million to $20 Million: A Real-Life ExampleDr. Noah shares a powerful case study about a client whose company was stuck at $4 million in revenue for four years. After hiring Dr. Noah, they focused on the inner game, and in less than 18 months, the company's revenue skyrocketed to over $20 million. This success was a direct result of addressing the team's mindset, not just their outer game tactics.Practical Steps to Break FreeWant to get off the "hamster wheel"? Dr. Noah gives steps to take right away.Get Clear on Your Goals: You must be specific about what you want to achieve, whether it's more money or a better relationship.Identify Your Limitations: Pinpoint the reasons you think you can't reach your goals, like not having enough time, money, or confidence.Take Action (Even Without Confidence): The myth that confidence comes first is dismantled here. Dan Dominguez Title: Embrace Your Neurodivergent Edge: How Self-Awareness Fuels Resilient Leadership Summary: When I first entered the military, I thought I had to be just like everyone else—follow the rules, fit in, and never let my differences show. But in the heat of tough missions, something clicked: the way my mind worked—my neurodivergent wiring—wasn't a liability. It was my edge. Later, in the world of sales, I saw the same truth again: those traits I once hid—my intense focus, my out-of-the-box thinking, my deep desire to help others—were exactly what helped me forge real connections and close deals. It took self-awareness to stop fighting those parts of myself and start using them as strengths. In this talk, I share that journey, along with a simple framework—Recognize, Accept, Celebrate—to help others stop hiding and start embracing their own neurodivergent edge. My story is a reminder: your greatest leadership potential lies not in fitting in, but in owning and celebrating who you really are. Paul McCarthy Title: Drowning out the voices we need to hear. Why F.I.R.E.D. leaders are your 'hidden gems' Summary: Two Options:Talk Summary 1 To survive disruption, organizations need leaders who possess disruptive leadership capabilities. So they hire them and then they fire them. Publicly, organizations say they want leaders to be innovative thinkers who challenge the status quo. Privately, conventional leadership culture wants nothing of the sort. Leaders with disruptive leadership capabilities often embody the very leadership qualities that organizations so desperately need to navigate disruption and adapt to the “new normal” of constant change, yet these leaders are being marginalized, ostracized, and even exorcised from today's organizations. We will need a different kind of leader for the future and our organizations are unprepared for how to identify, recruit, onboard, and develop this kind of leader. Join us for a radical, refreshing talk with Paul McCarthy, as openly talks about the untalkable, questions the unquestionable, and reframes perceptions about the leadership we desperately need for our times. Paul will share insights from his own experiences as a leader with disruptive leadership capabilities, as well as from his global research and first best-selling book into how individual leaders can be identified, cultivated, and embraced for being disruptive. He will also help us to understand how we can identify disruptive leadership capacity and capability. Talk Summary 2 Paul takes audiences on an exploratory journey to imagine a future where leaders who are currently perceived as 'not fitting in' or as 'bad culture fits' are the ones that organizations will increasingly need to thrive in a constantly changing environment. Yet these leaders are being marginalized, ostracized, and even exorcised from today's organizations. Using his own personal experiences, as well as research, case studies and outputs of interviews, Paul introduces the F.I.R.E.D. Leadership Framework and shows organizations why we need to embrace leaders who think differently. By helping reframe how organizations perceive their 'agitators', Paul shows how to cut through the noise to equip those organizations with the approach needed to create the next generation of leaders our world so desperately needs to successfully navigate ongoing disruption, continue to innovate and deliver transformative outcomes. Dr. Regeline “Gigi” Sabbat Title: “You Can Lead” ( Regardless if you are Neurodivergent you can lead. - Dr. Gigi Sabbat) Summary: Absolutely — being neurodivergent does not limit your ability to lead. In fact, many neurodivergent individuals bring exceptional strengths to leadership, such as: • Unique perspectives and creativity • High levels of focus and dedication • Empathy and emotional intelligence • Innovative problem-solving • Resilience and adaptability Leadership isn't about fitting a mold — it's about authenticity, vision, and the courage to empower others. Whether you're neurodivergent or not, your lived experiences can shape you into a powerful, impactful leader. Manny Piñiero Title: “Wired Differently - Neurodivergent Leadership and the Power of Intentional Time" Summary: Wired differently, I thrive in navigating complexity, identifying patterns others may overlook, and creating meaningful systems that honor both people and outcomes. My connection to time is not just about efficiency, it's about intentionality. I believe in making time count by aligning actions with purpose, fostering environments that empower teams to do the work that truly matters, while leading with clarity, empathy, and a deep respect for the diverse ways people think, work, and thrive. Holly White Title: Radical is Relative: Trusting Your Instincts Before the World Catches Up Summary: Some of the most powerful insights come from minds that don't follow conventional paths. In this talk, I explore how ADHD-related cognition—nonlinear, spontaneous, and deeply intuitive—often leads to ideas that feel radical to others but entirely natural to the thinker. We'll examine why these ideas meet resistance, how traits like discomfort with uncertainty affect their reception, and what it means to trust your instincts in a world that hasn't caught up yet. Whether you're the one generating paradigm-shifting ideas or the one receiving them, “trust the process” becomes more than a mantra—it's a model for creative courage, leadership, and cognitive integrity. Rosie Ward Title: Ditch the Head Trash! Upgrade Your Faulty Programming So You Can Maximize Your Impact Summary: Being human is messy. We are hardwired to be on high alert for threats, activating our biological hardwired instincts to self-protect and cling tightly to what is familiar. Yet our world demands that we are able to lean into discomfort and disruption. This creates a gap that keeps us stuck more than we realize. This session will normalize our shared human experience for why we get in our own way as a result of our 7 Faulty Programs and give you tangible tools to upgrade your own faulty programming so you can embrace your own sparkle and maximize your shine and impact around you. David Citron Title: Unleash Your ADHD Superpower in 4 Minutes a Day Summary: In this talk, David Citron, founder of Expressocoaching.com which serves ADHDers who lead organisations in 31 countries worldwide shares the 3 keys to unleashing your ADHD Superpower as a neurodivergent leader. This powerful methodology which has a 4.8* Trustpilot rating from thrilled leaders around the world can change the next 30 years of your life. Authenticity And Trust are essential elements to creating a work environment that leads to sustained satisfaction and longevity in your team. Are you struggling to break through your income ceiling despite working hard and attending countless seminars? In this eye-opening episode, I sit down with Dr. Noah St. John, known worldwide as the "Father of Afformations" ( with an “o”—to distinguish his approach from traditional affirmations). He found that classic affirmations like “I am confident” or “I am wealthy” often triggered resistance in the subconscious mind. If you don't believe the statement, your brain basically replies, “Yeah, right.” So instead, he developed Afformations, which are empowering questions that assume the positive outcome is already true. For example:This subtle shift turns your brain into a kind of internal search engine, prompting it to look for reasons the statement could be true. He believes this method bypasses internal resistance and rewires limiting beliefs more effectively. So no—he doesn't call them affirmations. He calls them Afformations, and he sees them as a breakthrough in personal development. Want to try crafting a few together? I'd be happy to help.and mental health coach to high-profile clients.
