MISSION, Texas - U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar says residents in South Texas will play a role in clinical trials for a COVID-19 vaccine.Cuellar said the National Institute of Health wants to ensure the volunteer pool is as diverse as possible.Along with members of the Asian, Black, Hispanic, and Native American Congressional caucuses, Cuellar participated in a meeting with Dr. Francis Collins and Dr. Anthony Fauci to discuss ways to increase the number of diverse participants at each of the COVID-19 clinical trial sites. Cuellar said Moderna has announced its vaccine trial sites for the COVID-19 vaccine in many locations across the United States, including Laredo, the Rio Grande Valley and San Antonio.“Hispanic populations have long been underrepresented in medical research despite being disproportionately affected by many of the studied disease, including the COVID-19,” said Congressman Cuellar. “For this reason, I am working hard with the National Institute of Health and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to create a diverse study population of the COVID-19 vaccine to ensure all Americans benefit from the eventual treatments. The inclusion of Laredo, the Rio Grande Valley, and San Antonio in this vaccine trial will help to guarantee that treatments work for all communities in America.” Cuellar added: “As we continue to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, we know from history that we cannot get this wrong. I am committed to working with the National Institute of Health to ensure the future vaccine is affordable and accessible in all communities. SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas - U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela sees no alternative to shutting down the economy again in order to defeat the surge in coronavirus cases in the Rio Grande Valley.Vela made clear his views on a telephone town hall he put together with a stellar group of medical professionals. The event was co-hosted by the Rio Grande Valley Partnership and South Padre Island Chamber of Commerce.Discussing the possibility of another stay-at-home order, Vela said: “That is the only way we are going to stop this disease.”Vela said he came to this view having listened to the medical experts.“If you listen to all the professionals that are on this phone call, that (a new stay-at-home order) has to be the next step,” Vela said. “It is painful but, if we can do that for two to three to four weeks we will be in a much better place a month from now and then we can get our economy growing again.”The medical experts on the webinar were: Ron Klain, a former chief of staff to Vice Presidents Gore and Biden and President Obama’s Ebola czar, Israel Rocha, CEO of Elmhurst and Queens hospitals in New York, Dr. Art Garza, CEO of Valley Regional Medical Center in Harlingen, Dr. Joseph McCormick, founder of the UTHealth School of Public Health in Brownsville, and Dr. Joseph Masci, chairman of the Department of Global Health at Elmhurst Hospital Center in New York.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas - The founder of the UTHealth School of Public Health in Brownsville says the economy should not be ‘re-opened’ until there has been a lot more testing for the coronavirus. World-renowned epidemiologist Dr. Joseph McCormick was asked when it will be safe for shelter at home measures to be relaxed during a webinar hosted by Congressman Filemon Vela.“The testing issue continues to be a problem. It is a major obstacle even to re-opening businesses to a large degree because we don’t have adequate testing,” McCormick said.McCormick’s past experience includes testing patients with Lassa fever in Africa. He has written over 200 scientific publications related to epidemiology with co-authors from over 20 different countries.McCormick said the test to see if someone is infected is called a PCR test. He said it usually takes 24 to 48 hours to achieve a result, though there are some rapid tests that are online.“But, here is the biggest problem with testing that everyone is experiencing: as one of my colleagues put it, the reagents that are required to make these tests are coming in a garden hose as opposed to a canal. This is one of the major things that is holding up the ability to expand our testing.”Right now, McCormick said, health officials are using criteria on whether people have the symptoms for COVID-19 or not, or whether they have been in contact with a known case, to see whether they get tested.“We would love to be able to expand that but I don’t see that happening any time soon because of the lack of reagents. BROWNSVILLE, RGV - The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and UTHealth in Houston are teaming up to fast track the development of new treatments for disease. The Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences at UTHealth recently announced that is partnering with UTRGV on clinical trials and other research. Joseph McCormick, MD, the director of the center’s clinical research unit in Brownsville, spoke about the new partnership in an exclusive interview with the Rio Grande Guardian.McCormick is a professor with UTHealth School of Public Health in Brownsville and director of the clinical research unit in Brownsville operated by The Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences. “In this new award, one of the areas being developed is for us to be able to do clinical trials,” McCormick said.“This means being able to test new medicines with our population.”McCormick said that currently, a lot of the clinical trials fail to include minority populations.

Joseph McCormick is the founder of Reuniting America, Engaging Across the Great Divide-meaning the great divide of politics. After leaving the military McCormick studied process work (organizational behavior), and then entered politics and ran for office as a member of the Republican Party. During his time as a politician he became very disillusioned with the possibilities for change. We live in a "democratic republic" he says. Republic is like monarchy and monarch is president. The "democratic" part means grassroots participation.Reuniting America believes that that key is a healthier, more democratic situation is to honor that all points are valid and can fit together. Sometimes we need facilitation to help see this and then we begin to get to "wisdom"-- the truth of what really happened. There you can get the best solution. When people don't hear each other it could even lead to civil war. He says they are applying social technology, i.e. process work, to "re-integrate -- to find ways to re-integrate the the people, the knowledge, the issues and the interests. McCormick finds that most Americans have the same "values" like integrity and freedom. We say the the US Government is supposed to be of, by and for the people but it's not what is the case. It's government for the few and most of us are, in fact, more spectators of the system than participants. (Not to mention of the lack of integrity of fixed elections). The right tends to believe in "order", the left in "rights of freedom". We need both sets of values-like moms and dads. If we look beneath the surface are two archetypal dynamics which are masculine and feminine. If we focus on the "cause" of these 2 value systems and reconcile them it'll be better-they compliment each other and we will have a functional family. Where is a civic space where "we the people" get together?? That's what he intends to create. Now corporations give support to both sides to keep the game going. When trust, respect and communication break down it is the beginning of civil war and this is what's happening in the US. McCormick, as a responsible citizen, wants to do what he can do to prevent this. He wants to create a new game.- The goal for Reuniting America is to bring about an evolution of the system bringing the top and bottom and all citizens together and then together with the leaders creating accountability and understanding between the citizens and the leaders thus forming a trans-partisan democratic republic.Reuniting America has been building coalitions, creating houseparties, library dialogues and townhall discussions across this great divide. They had 24 leaders of big civic organizations in a room in December 2005 at which continuing relationships between left and right on election integrity were formed. They've been working together on net neutrality and climate change as well. Based on these relationships coalitions have been built among organizations. Transformational relationships means sustainable in that the relationships last regardless of the issues-- i.e., they can go from issue to issue creating a permanent coalition which can go on to address many issues such as womens' empowerment which has already begun.
