Join me as I tell John the heartbreaking case of Baby Hope. When the body of a malnourished girl was found in a cooler off the Henry Hudson parkway in 1991 the homicide detectives of the 34th precinct work hard to identify her body and find her killer. It would take 22 years, but Baby Hope would eventually get her name back. This week, Yergy and Drewby discuss the case of Kenisha Berry, a single mother from Beaumont, Texas, who first made headlines after abandoning her infant daughter, Paris, on the side of the road outside of town. Paris was attacked by fire ants and almost didn't survive. However, the discovery of baby Paris helped law enforcement crack a cold case from 5 years earlier. Dubbed "Baby Hope," a newborn baby boy was found in a dumpster by a couple collecting aluminum cans. And that boy's mother? None other than Kenisha Berry... July 23rd: Anjelica Castillo's Body Discovered (1991) Through the tireless effort of detectives, cold cases are being solved after decades of being at a standstill. On July 23rd 1991, a young girl's body was found in New York City and, thanks to the tireless work of determined detectives, and DNA, the case was solved and Baby Hope was given back her name. Baby Hope was the name given to a four-year-old little girl found dead in a cooler near the Henry Hudson Parkway. Baby Hope's body was found by construction workers in Manhattan, New York, in 1991. Authorities found witnesses but were unable to figure out who Baby Hope was or what exactly had happened to her. It wasn't until 2013 that police caught a break in the case and the pieces started to fall into place. Join Mike and Morf as they discuss the case of Baby Hope. Police learned that her real name was Anjelica Castillo. As they unraveled the mystery of her identity, they also zeroed in a suspect in her murder. It turned out that Baby Hope was victimized by relatives, the very people that should be there to help keep a little girl like Anjelica safe. After hours of interrogation, the truth about what happened to Baby Hope is revealed.
It was July 23, 1991. Three men were working in Inwood Hill Park, not far from the Henry Hudson Bridge, when they found a cooler. Inside, they made a horrifying discovery: the body of a little girl. The crime would come to be known as the Baby Hope murder. The story behind the investigation into the killing is now one of the featured in the NYPD’s new true crime podcast called “Break in the Case”
For 22 years, detectives searched for the true name of the little girl they called "Baby Hope." Once they found it, it was eight days before they were face to face with her killer.
For two decades, detectives struggled with the Baby Hope case. One day, a tip was called in that changed everything.
Two years into the investigation, detectives are no closer to knowing Baby Hope's real name.
A gruesome discovery by a road crew in Washington Heights sends the 34th Precinct Detective Squad on a hunt for a little girl's identity.

Abbi Hope Goldstein is like every other teenager, with a few smallish exceptions: her famous alter ego, Baby Hope, is the subject of internet memes, she has asthma, and sometimes people spontaneously burst into tears when they recognize her. Abbi has lived almost her entire life in the shadow of the terrorist attacks of September 11. On that fateful day, she was captured in what became an iconic photograph: in the picture, Abbi (aka "Baby Hope") wears a birthday crown and grasps a red balloon; just behind her, the South Tower of the World Trade Center is collapsing. Now, fifteen years later, Abbi is desperate for anonymity and decides to spend the summer before her seventeenth birthday incognito as a counselor at Knights Day Camp two towns away. She's psyched for eight weeks in the company of four-year-olds, none of whom have ever heard of Baby Hope. Too bad Noah Stern, whose own world was irrevocably shattered on that terrible day, has a similar summer plan. Noah believes his meeting Baby Hope is fate. Abbi is sure it's a disaster. Soon, though, the two team up to ask difficult questions about the history behind the Baby Hope photo. But is either of them ready to hear the answers? Hope and Other Punchlines author Julie Buxbaum is in conversation with novelist and playright Kayla Cagan.
What do derailments, freezing cold cases and open ends have in common? This week, Carol and Steph cover the murder of Baby Hope, who was found inside a picnic cooler by the side of the road and would be identified only over two decades later as Anjelica Castillo. They explore the circumstances that allowed this case to remain unsolved for that long and talk about the immigrant experience in America.
