This is the concluding episode of Leslie McFadden's appearance on Sexual Assault Survivor Stories. Leslie's experience is a powerful example of the systemic issues that many survivors face. In October 2015, she was drugged and raped in Brooklyn. The last thing she remembers was drinks on Stone Street; she would wake up in a hospital many hours later, not knowing what happened. Slowly, she began to piece together that something terrible had occurred. When Leslie reported her sexual assault to the NYPD's Special Victims Unit, she faced additional trauma. One of the first questions a detective asked her was whether this was truly a case of assault or just regret. The next day, she was asked to make a controlled call to the perpetrator, during which he admitted to the assault. Immediately after, the detective presented her with a form that she was told would put her case on hold pending further evidence. Unbeknownst to her, this was actually a case closure form, which she signed while in distress. The detective never spoke to the assailant and closed the case without further investigation. Leslie's story is not unique. She became one of 19 survivors to urge the federal Department of Justice to open an investigation into how the NYPD handled sexual assault survivors and their cases. In 2022, the DOJ opened an investigation into the NYPD's Special Victims Unit to examine whether the department discriminated against sexual assault survivors when conducting their investigations. This episode is the conclusion of a two-part encounter. Leslie is an articulate, strong, and influential voice for victims and survivors everywhere; her ongoing goal is to make a lasting change in this world, to help overcome rape culture, and encourage law enforcement to become trauma-informed, empathic, and thorough in the investigation of rape and sexual assault. As I mentioned in last week's episode, a former guest of SASS, Rachel Izzo, introduced me to Leslie. If you haven't heard Rachel Izzo's episodes, I encourage you to take the time to listen to those as well. Rachel and Leslie share similar experiences with the New York Police Department's Special Victims Unit, and have both shown immense courage in sharing their stories. Was she measuring the curtains in the Oval Office? Penguins are breathing a sigh of relief as Trump blinks on his one-man demolition of the economy. But the slingshot economic tactics are a political threat to the reelection campaigns of Republicans nationwide and in Michigan - with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee now targeting 3 Republican-held districts in our state. One of those Trump-backing Republicans, Congressman John James, says he's running for Governor, meaning his 10th district congressional seat is a definite flip opportunity for Democrats. Sexual Assault Survivor Stories

This is the final episode of Rachel Izzo's encounter with the New York Police Department (NYPD) and a harrowing tale of systemic failure and the enduring impact of trauma on survivors of sexual assault. Her story is not just a narrative of personal suffering but a stark indictment of institutional shortcomings in handling cases of sexual violence. In her quest for justice, Rachel found herself navigating a labyrinth of bureaucracy that seemed more intent on an outward image than true empathetic support. Her initial report of assault, bravely detailed to law enforcement, was met with skepticism and administrative inertia, compounding her anguish. Despite the gravity of her allegations and the evident trauma she had experienced, Rachel faced a stark reality: the system designed to protect failed to meet the standards of a trauma-informed approach or provide the compassionate response she needed. Rachel's journey through the NYPD's investigative process revealed a disturbing undercurrent of disbelief and procedural indifference, echoing broader societal challenges in addressing sexual violence with the gravity and sensitivity it demands. Rachel's courage in confronting her ordeal serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience required of survivors who dare to seek accountability and healing within a system that all too often falls short. As Rachel bravely shares her story, she illuminates not only the personal devastation wrought by assault but also the imperative for systemic reform. Her experience underscores the critical need for law enforcement to adopt trauma-informed practices that prioritize survivor-centered approaches. And Rachel's experience isn't restricted to just the NYPD; others with whom she shared her story had a role in Rachel feeling unbelieved, blamed, and denied in seeking a thorough investigation. Through her search for advocacy and an unwavering support system, Rachel challenges us to confront the uncomfortable truths about institutional and societal responses to sexual violence, urging a paradigm shift towards empathy, accountability, and genuine support for those who have endured rape or sexual assault. In listening to Rachel's journey, we are required not only to engage with and open mind-set, but to reflect critically on our collective responsibility to ensure that survivors are heard, believed, and supported. Her story, etched in resilience, stands as a testament to the enduring strength of the human spirit in the face of profound adversity. I want to remind you—we all have a role to play in this fight. The first step? Start by Believing. When a survivor reaches out to tell their story, we need to listen without judgment, without skepticism. We need to believe them, because we all know someone whose life has been touched by sexual assault—whether it's a friend, a family member, or even ourselves. The more we normalize these conversations, the stronger we become in pushing back against rape culture and the systems that perpetuate it. This leads the Munchie Boys to investigate just what started this anti-vax MMR-causes-autism nonsense that's since metastasized in much more widespread and nefarious ways. Don't worry, there's also plenty of fun to be had, including (but not limited to) the virtues of Susie Essman, the horrors of opening montage music, the hilarious inappropriateness of filmed teenage sex parties, and the watercooler TV-watching habits of the dedicated detectives of the Special Victims Unit. Lane has been a member with the Victoria Police Department since 2008. She has spent most of her career on the front lines in patrol where she was on the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team for 6 years. Currently, she serves as the Explosives Technician, a Detective in the Special Victims Unit, and a member of the Critical Incident Stress Management Team. Outside of work, Lane and her amazing husband, Jeff, are parents to 2 dogs, 50 chickens, a 700-gallon reef tank, and 5 honey bee hives! When they aren't lifting weights or farming they are riding their Harleys on beautiful Vancouver Island together. In this episode, Lane has an amazing story to share that displays incredible resiliency. The incident happened back in 2011 when she was just a junior member at 24 years old with less than 2 ½ years on the job. Her day started off like any other. She spent the morning filing paperwork and was called to a routine call at a 7-Eleven for someone who reportedly stole a chocolate bar. This routine call took a turn for the worst when she was targeted for a spontaneous attack. In this powerful story that Lane shares with listeners, she details out all of the events that took place, what she gained from these experiences, and her advice to others. She also speaks about the post-traumatic stress that came with it, but mostly her post-traumatic growth and how she managed to reduce her stress.

Join me as I talk to get another attorney who works with service members seeking accountability. Hear the “stories behind the story” on some of his most compelling cases and his suggestions for reforming the military justice system. Benjamin Beliles is a former Air Force JAG officer and trial lawyer with over 15 years of experience in complex criminal prosecution, civil litigation, defense, appellate work, and internal investigations. He focuses his practice on white-collar crime and complex civil litigation matters and advocates for victims of sexual assault and sexual harassment in the military.  Before entering private practice, Ben served as senior trial counsel for the Special Victims Unit of the U.S. Air Force at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. As the senior prosecutor for the Air Force's legal offices in Germany, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, and the U.K., he first-chaired 46 jury trials to verdict. While serving in that role, Ben was named the Special Victims Unit Prosecutor of the Year twice. Before leaving active duty, Ben served as a federal litigation attorney, defending the agency in employment actions in administrative and federal litigation. In that role, he was designated the Air Force Subject Matter Expert in sexual harassment-based removals of civilian employees. Notably, Ben successfully prosecuted Lt. Col. James Wilkerson for sexual assault at Aviano Air Base, Italy. The convening authority, Lt. Gen. Craig Franklin, threw the verdict out. That action made the case a lightning rod for change to the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Ben was integrally involved in its systemic revision to provide more robust protections for victims of sexual assault. During the fallout from the case, he served as a frequent media contributor. Today is Wednesday, May 15th, and Happy 70th Birthday to MLB HOF George Brett. ***05.15.24 – BIRTHDAY – GEORGE BRETT*** I'm Bruce Jenkins and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. Ohio man convicted of molesting 8-year-old girl Cocaine trafficker sentenced to life in prison Gwinnett's judicial candidates weigh in on the court system's biggest challenges Plus, my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on diabetes. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Ohio man convicted of molesting 8-year-old girl In 2019, Kevin McKenna, a 66-year-old Ohio man, molested an 8-year-old girl in Lawrenceville and Loganville, Georgia, multiple times. Last week, a jury convicted him on charges including aggravated sexual battery and child molestation. He received a life sentence plus 20 years and will be registered as a sex offender for life. Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson condemned his actions, emphasizing the trauma inflicted on the victim and the relentless pursuit of justice by the Special Victims Unit. The victim reported the crimes in 2021, detailing instances where McKenna touched her inappropriately and attempted sexual contact. STORY 2: Cocaine trafficker sentenced to life in prison Glenn Smithson, aged 52, was recently convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole for trafficking cocaine in Gwinnett County for over three decades. The conviction followed a bench trial where he confessed to his involvement in trafficking drugs investigated in 2021. Prosecutors highlighted the efforts of law enforcement, particularly the Gwinnett County Police Narcotics Unit, in dismantling his criminal operation. Investigations revealed Smithson's activities through wiretaps and surveillance, leading to his arrest after a traffic stop where cocaine was found in his possession. This sentencing marks the end of a long history of drug-related convictions spanning 30 years. District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson emphasized the community's safety with Smithson behind bars. STORY 3: Gwinnett's judicial candidates weigh in on the court system's challenges In Gwinnett County's upcoming judicial races, candidates address pressing issues such as mental health in court proceedings and fairness in treatment. State Court Judge Shawn Bratton emphasizes civility and respect in the diverse community, while Deputy District Attorney Ramona Toole highlights the need to tackle case backlogs through proactive scheduling. In the Superior Court races, candidates stress equality and individualized approaches to justice. Juvenile Court Judge Rodney Harris advocates for equal treatment regardless of representation, while Magistrate Judge Kimberly Gallant supports treatment courts for accountability and recovery. In the race to replace retiring judges, candidates prioritize mental health support for defendants, with B. Thassanee "BT" Gutter-Parker proposing a comprehensive safety plan, Regina Matthews advocating for continued accountability court programs, and Tuwanda Rush Williams emphasizing intervention plans over incarceration for those with mental health diagnoses. Voters can explore detailed candidate responses on gwinnettdailypost.com. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back Break 2: TOM WAGES STORY 4: Georgia prison inmate pleads guilty in meth conspiracy Christopher David Johnson, aged 46, has pleaded guilty to leading a methamphetamine conspiracy while incarcerated in a Georgia prison. He faces a minimum of 15 years to life in prison for distributing over 500 grams of meth. Johnson orchestrated the operation using multiple cellphones from prison, coordinating with accomplices through Facebook and text messages. His co-conspirator, Michael Paul Brown, was recently sentenced to 15 years for his involvement. The state budget includes $10.7 million for prison technology upgrades to prevent contraband smuggling. The U.S. DEA and law enforcement agencies from Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia investigated Johnson's case, with his guilty plea entered in federal court in Abingdon, Virginia. STORY 5: Emergency hearing on Mulberry cityhood referendum set for Thursday An emergency hearing has been scheduled by a Gwinnett Superior Court judge regarding a lawsuit aimed at halting the Mulberry cityhood referendum on the May 21 ballot. Filed by retiree Stephen Hughes, the lawsuit contends that key aspects of the proposed city's charter are unconstitutional, including limitations on property tax collection and specified city services. Hughes' attorney argues that the referendum would deceive voters, as the proposed city's structure faces legal challenges. Supporters of Mulberry cityhood, such as Georgia House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration, denounce the lawsuit, alleging it is driven by special interest groups, possibly developers opposing the proposal. Citizens For Mulberry President Michael Coker maintains that cityhood enjoys community support and anticipates its passage, dismissing the lawsuit as a last-minute attempt to derail the referendum. We'll be back in a moment   Break 3: INGLES  10   STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on diabetes.   STORY 7: LEAH MCGRATH ***LEAH MCGRATH INERVIEW***   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: SCANDRETT Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. The grand return of Elliot Stabler (and family) to SVU would probably hit harder if we were watching these eps in order one at a time. That, however, is not how we do things at Munch My Benson. Instead, we are treated to an investigation that is way, WAY outside the Special Victims Unit's purview, and which won't pay off in an episode of SVU (if it ever does). Still, it's fun to see how Dickie Stabler has grown up and to indulge in the wildest fan service fantasies that were surely swirling when this one first dropped.Music:Divorcio Suave - "Munchy Business"Thanks to our gracious Munchies on Patreon: Jeremy S, Jaclyn O, Amy Z, Nikki B, Diana R, Tony B, Zak B, Barry W, Sara L, Drew D, Nicky R, Stuart, Jacqi B, Natalie T, Robyn S, Isabel P, Christine L, Amy A, Sean M, Jay S, Briley O, Asteria K, Suzanne B, Tim Y, Douglas P, John P, John W, Elia S, Rebecca B, Kevin, Adina G, and Lily - y'all are the best!Be a Munchie, too! Just like the rest of the first season, the salacious and disgusting is cranked up, the darkness is unavoidable, and the Stabler family is prominently featured, though this one prominently features Elliot and Kathy in their underwear, selling sex marital-style.Alt-title: Dickie's Turtle Getting Cannibal Holocausted.Music:Divorcio Suave - "Munchy Business"Thanks to our gracious Munchies on Patreon: Jeremy S, Jaclyn O, Amy Z, Nikki B, Diana R, Tony B, Zak B, Barry W, Sara L, Drew D, Nicky R, Stuart, Jacqi B, Natalie T, Robyn S, Isabel P, Christine L, Amy A, Sean M, Jay S, Briley O, Asteria K, Suzanne B, Tim Y, Douglas P, John P, John W, and Elia S - y'all are the best!Be a Munchie, too!
