Barry is a world-renowned alpine climber, IMFGA Mountain Guide, author and brilliant storyteller.Key Takeaways:Adventure has discomfort and involves risk: You can't achieve an adventure without pushing through some level of discomfort, risk or challenge.Personal evolution: Experiencing and overcoming discomfort and challenge leads to personal evolution. Testing our metal allows us to see what we are capable of.We all need help: While adventure is often a personal thing, we all need help to achieve it. ACMG / IFMGA Mountain Guide Barry Blanchard continues sharing what it takes to deliver adventure to others and achieve it for ourselves. Barry recounts some tough guiding situations, close calls with bears, how to balance risk taking and his hopes for his legacy.Key TakeawaysRespecting Bears: Bears generally avoid people. However, they are wild animals and they can be unpredictable. Managing this hazard safely requires awareness, preparation, and respect.Managing Breaking Points: Everyone has a point where the adversity in a given situation can become too much. Coaching people forward when they have hit this point may require a firm hand or a soft touch, depending on the person and the situation.Respecting risk: Risk taking can become normalized the more we are exposed to it. This can cause us to become complacent in the face of situations that have high amounts of risk taking. When it comes to taking risks, we need to tread lightly. On this episode, I have the opportunity to sit down with Brandon Pullan on his way through Thunder Bay. Likely many if not most of you will have heard of Brandon before – he's an alumni of kinesiology at Lakehead, spent 5 action packed years living in Thunder Bay and doing heaps of climbing in the region, and has gone on to do a whole lot more. Brandon now lives in Canmore, and is the Editor in Chief of Gripped Magazine, as well the author of a number of fantastic books, on top of continuing to do a whole bunch of awesome climbing and developing across the country. As you'll hear, Brandon has roped up and hung out with a ton of legendary climbers, including Sonnie Trotter, Tommy Caldwell, Will Gadd, Barry Blanchard, Jim Elzinga, Marc-Andre Leclerc, David Smart and Cedar Wright. He also mentions Sarah Heuniken, who it turns out is another graduate of Outdoor Rec at lakehead, and has gone to be one of the leading ice and mixed climbers in the country. After we finished recording this already lengthy interview and were chatting over some beers, more and more interesting things kept coming up and I had to turn the mic back on – to hear about the infamous story of bolting at the Centennial Park Bluffs, all the times Brandon met Fred Beckey, and the time that Cedar Wright rope-gunned him up Yamnuska, check back soon for a follow up episode, because those were all stories that are way too good not to share. So with that, enjoy my conversation with Gripped Editor, author, and prolific first ascentionist, Brandon Pullan. You can find Brandon on Instagram @brandonpullan and Gripped Magazine @grippedmagazine. You can also check out his book The Bold and Cold @theboldandcold.

Yuh-hai-has-kun (Mt. Robson) is one of North America's greatest peaks, despite rising to less than 4,000 meters or 13,000 feet. In early October, Ethan Berman (U.S.) and Uisdean Hawthorn (Scotland) completed a rare new route to the summit, climbing a 2,000-meter line up the Emperor Face, left of the classic Infinite Patience. In this episode, we speak with both men about their profound experience on the mountain, and we also chat with Barry Blanchard, who put up Infinite Patience in 2002 with Eric Dumerac and Philippe Pellet, after many attempts. It's a Robson double-header! The Cutting Edge is presented by Hilleberg the Tentmaker (hilleberg.com). This podcast is produced by the American Alpine Club.
"Mark Twight began his self-described “descent into the black depths of extreme alpinism” in 1984. “This obsession,” as he wrote in the essay, “Kiss or Kill,” “destroyed my relationships, drove me into depression, and changed me from a happy, future-hopeful young man into an embittered cynic.” Twight is well-known for pushing the margins, both in his climbs and in his writing. In 1988, he and Randy Rackliff made the first ascent of “The Reality Bath,” a 600-meter ice climb in the Canadian Rockies that has yet to be repeated. That same year, Twight joined Barry Blanchard, Ward Robinson and Kevin Doyle in an alpine-style attempt of Nanga Parbat’s Rupal Face. The climbers reached 7700 meters before a storm forced them to retreat amid lightning and multiple avalanches. In his writing of the same era, Twight often adopted a bold, brusque voice that earned him the persona “Dr. Doom.” Now a classic of mountain literature, the 2001 anthology Kiss or Kill includes writing that helped canonize the Dr. Doom persona, who delivered lines such as, “The new climbs of the age are yesterday’s death routes,” and “Punish your body to perfect your soul.” Twight stepped away from extreme alpinism in 2000. In his recently released book of photography, Refuge, Twight reflected, “Twenty-five of my years were governed by the demands imposed by mountains and climbing them, and the most difficult challenge I faced after having survived was to find satisfaction in the valley.” Deputy editor Paula Wright spoke with Twight at the Banff Mountain Book and Film Festival in November 2019. On a recent trip to California I got to spend a day at the Anatometal facilities in Santa Cruz. Founder and CEO Barry Blanchard gave me an extensive tour then sat down to record this interview. We talked about the origin's of not only his company but of the body jewelry designs, materials, and threading our industry uses today. It was an in-depth discussion on their green manufacturing process, the expansion that helped reduce their wait time from months to weeks, and their future plans. On today's episode of The Firn Line, we'll dive into the final segment of a two-part series with Canadian Rockies legend, Barry Blanchard. In the first episode, we heard Barry tell stories of his early years in the Canadian Rockies, as well as some of the formative partnerships he developed during that time. We heard about iconic routes like The Andromeda Strain, The North Pillar of North Twin, and the east face of Mount Fay to name a few. But there was one mountain - a mountain that is central to my own climbing career - that I wanted to spend a little more time talking with Barry about. And that majestic peak is Mount Robson.Rising over 10,000 feet from the Fraser River Valley, Robson is the highest mountain in the Canadian Rockies. It's also one of the most recognizable mountains in North America, if not the world, drawing hundreds of thousands of tourists each year, hoping to catch a glimpse of it's frosty summit. But to mountaineers, Robson is much more than a photo opportunity. Rather, it is a sacred destination. I place to test one's self. All the mountain's aspects feature classic routes - and some walls, like the Emperor Face - harbor some of the biggest and most challenging lines in North America. One of these lines is called Infinite Patience - a route Barry established up the right side of the Emperor Face in 2002 with partners Eric Dumerac and Phillipe Pellet.I asked Barry to talk about his years long obsession with Robson, why the mountain is meaningful to him, and what it took to finally make it up Infinite Patience after years of attempts.Music by Evan PhillipsSupport the show at PatreonSponsors:Alaska Rock GymThe Hoarding Marmot
On today's episode of The Firn Line, we'll delve into the first of a two-part series with Canadian Rockies legend, Barry Blanchard.Barry's name is synonymous with some of the most iconic lines in the Canadian Rockies - and his first ascents on these mythical walls are many: from the Andromeda Strain - to the north pillar of North Twin - to a gutsy climb on Mount Cephran called M-16 - and a visionary line of beauty up mount Robson's emperor face. But like many alpinists, Barry's career has been defined just as much by strong partnerships and friendships he's forged, than by the mountains themselves - and this was especially evident during a recent conversation we had.We talked about everything, from his early experiences in the Rockies, to a string of ascents in the early to mid 80's with Dave Cheesmond, and much much more.Music by Evan PhillipsSupport the show at PatreonSponsors:Alaska Rock GymThe Hoarding Marmot
In 1969, at the age of nine, Barry Blanchard sat on a Greyhound bus as a young woman read to him from the pages of the mountaineering classic, The White Spider. Five decades later, alpinist and mountain guide Barry Blanchard recalls how the call of the mountains transformed his life.
In our 8th and final episode of season two … we sit down with Barry Blanchard, one of the most bold and accomplished alpine climbers the world has ever seen. Blanchard is best known for his dangerous, cutting-edge ascents on high alpine faces across the globe. Many of Barry’s first ascents were well before their time and have consequently become test pieces for generations following in his footsteps. Most notably, these include the first ascent of Infinite Patience on the Emperor Face of Mt. Robson, the first ascent of the North Pillar of North Twin, a first ascent on the North Face of Les Droites, and a heroic attempt on the 15,000-foot Rupal Face on Nanga Parbat. He is perhaps most well known for outrageous alpine climbing feats with partners Mark Twight, Steve House, David Cheeseman and Scott Backes. The “brotherhood” as they are often referred to, actively challenged death on bold and cold alpine faces in what can only be considered a golden era of alpine climbing. We talk at length about his death-defying alpine climbing feats amidst a life wrought with hardship, personal struggle and ultimate redemption. Barry and I take a deep dive into how growing up fatherless in a mixed race family led to his rebellious alpine climbing mentality, how the closest bonds in his life have been realized through the power of partnerships, and how the great spirit has guided him on cold faces in order to abate the lethal risk of alpine climbing. Barry refers to alpinism as “pushing the door of a radiant, dangerous cathedral” and his philosophical take on the sport can be summed up in one beautiful and simple quote from his book “The Calling:" BARRY WRITES “WHAT BINDS US IS THE BOND OF BROTHERS, LINKED BY THE BELIEF THAT ACTION IS VIRTUE AND BY COMMITMENT TO CLIMBING MOUNTAINS VIA THEIR MOST COMPELLING LINES, IN SMALL PARTNERSHIPS, WITH ONLY THE THE TIME-HONORED ACCOUTREMENTS OF A ROPE, A RACK AND A PACK.” I hope you enjoy a deep and intimate conversation with one of the most fascinating, kind and intellectual people I have ever had the honor of recording with.
The Canadian Rockies are home to some of the most iconic alpine peaks in North America. Mountains like Alberta, Columbia, Edith Cavell and North Twin (to name a few) are synonymous with classic rockies alpine climbing: variable rock quality ranging from total choss, to flint hard quartzite - hanging glaciers and double cornices, veins of pristine alpine and water ice - and the classic sandbag grade of 5.9 A2. • But if there's one mountain that stands out from the rest (Literally) - it's Mount Robson. Topping out at nearly 13,000' in height, and with huge relief on all sides, Robson is truly a sight to behold. It's massive south face rises nearly 10,000' from the Yellowhead Hwy - luring tourists, hikers and climbers for a closer look. • But it's the northern side of Robson that speaks the language of the true alpinist. In 1913, mountain guide Conrad Kain led a group of climbers to the summit after navigating the crevasse-laden Robson Glacier, and chopping steps up the northeast face and on the the summit. This ultra-classic line, aptly named the Kain Face - was in some ways ahead of it's time - and is still a serious route. • The ante was upped in 1963 when Pat Callis and Dan Davis ascended the intimidating apron of 60 to 70 degree blue ice and steep snow, known as the north face. But it wasn't until 1978, that the biggest face of all - The Emperor Face - was finally climbed by Mugs Stump and Jamie Logan. The duo spent four days on the route - a line that more or less takes the central rib that splits the 8,000' face - and with that, established one of the most committing Grade VI lines in the rockies. • Another line on the face was climbed in 1981, by the legendary Dave Cheesmond and Tony Dick. And finally in 2002, after multiple attempts over many years - Barry Blanchard, Phillipe Pellet and Eric Dumerac climbed “Infinite Patience” - a classic line following couloir like other classic rockies routes. • Although Infinite Patience has now been climbed multiple times (and even soloed by the late Marc Andre LeClerc), it is still one of the most serious lines in the Canadian Rockies - and like other classic rockies routes - an ascent is largely based on finding the face in perfect conditions. • That's why I was excited to hear about the line getting repeated again in September of this year by the Canadian / Dutch team of Jas Fauteux and Maarten Von Haren. I recently got a chance to talk with Jas about his experience on Robson - what it felt like to find that face in perfect conditions - and what it means to have climbed such an iconic line on the emperor of the rockies. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Music: www.evanphillips.net www.eastonstaggerphillips.com https://www.podpeak.com/andrew-tholberg/ •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Links: www.thefirnline.com www.evanphillips.net www.patreon.com/thefirnline •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Sponsors: www.alaskarockgym.com www.moosestooth.net www.hoardingmarmot.com www.behindthesuntherapeutics.com
Barry Blanchard is a Canadian alpinist who in the 80's and 90's established highly technical routes in the Canadian Rockies and the Himalaya. Throughout his childhood, he faced challenges of poverty and growing up "a dark-skinned, brown-eyed, half-breed kid" in a predominantly white, affluent area. His transformation from a poor kid from the wrong side of the tracks to one of the most respected alpinists in the world is chronicled in his most recent book The Calling: A Life Rocked by the Mountains.
Barry Blanchard has known fear. The legendary big wall climber is the author of the new book, The Calling: A Life Rocked By Mountains. He talks to Jon Turk about a bad day on the world's highest vertical-distance wall climb: the Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat, an escarpment that rises at an average of 50 degrees for more than three miles. If you've never braced against an avalanche for fully 27 minutes amidst 70 mile per hour winds and three-foot an hour snowfall, if you've never dropped your ropes 10,000 feet because of miscommunication with your climbing partner, we have a whole new definition of fear for you. Oh, and there's no air up there either.
