Located in Rolette County, St. John is one of the oldest towns in North Dakota, dating back to its 1843 origins as a trading post. The 1880s, saw towns springing up in that region as people gravitated to the area's trading posts. Dunseith and Belcourt were organized in 1884. And the city of Rolette is a relative latecomer, incorporated on this date in 1930.
Christi Belcourt, a Métis artist whose painting “Reverence for Life” appears on the newest volume from the NetVUE Scholarly Resources Project, reflects on the vocation of the artist. In our conversation, she explains how walking gently on the earth is part of learning responsibility and leading a life of integrity. From her perspective, vocation is about recognizing the gifts one is born with, as well as living in awe of the mystery and wonder of life and the natural world. Christi shares with us the techniques, the historical and cultural narratives, and the social justice causes that inform her artistic process. She reminds us that “our hope is in each other,” and describes how mentors helped her learn to value who each person is, rather than what they do.

MERRY CHRISTMAS! It's that one and only day. Seems like people are mad as hell leading up to this day and can't drive for shit but once the day gets here then it all feels all right. We culminate in our theme of THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR with this ultimate Christmas Classic. Some might say that having this movie as your favorite Christmas movie is perhaps typical. Cliche. But it's much more typical to proclaim it as typical because this is one of the most anti-cynical movies ever made. It wasn't even a hit in its time. Not until around the 70s did it truly become iconic holiday fare. It's a heavy hitter that stands the test of time for a reason. Of course, we're talking about Frank Capra's 1946 classic “It's A Wonderful Life” starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore & Henry Travers. Bob & Angela actually saw it in the theater as is the annual tradition of the Belcourt to show it during this time every year. There's not much more you can say about it (we still say a lot) but maybe we can inspire you to relive it if it's been a minute. Y'know we get choked up. Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. Send us a Text Message.This episode of The Heart Gallery will take you into the history and ongoing realities of Indigenous affairs in Canada. Recent years have shed light on a painful and violent history, as well as present-day systemic challenges. From the harrowing legacy of the residential school system, which remained active until the 1990s, to the continuous struggles over land rights and cultural preservation, these unfolding revelations have sparked crucial national and international dialogues. They compel us to face uncomfortable truths and prompt a critical re-examination of the process of truth and reconciliation.Against this backdrop, I'm privileged to interview Christi Belcourt, an artist whose work is deeply entwined with her Métis community's stories. Christi's art does not merely reflect Métis cultural practices and deep connection to nature; it resonates with the ongoing struggles and triumphs of indigenous people, offering a window into the soul of communities striving for justice.We explore Christi's work while also talking about how the arts can be a conduit for expressing Indigenous voices and can play a valuable role in efforts to reveal systemic challenges.I hope you enjoy this conversation.Homework from Christi: "Do something that is completely selfless - and anonymous - in the aid of someone else."Mentioned:- Keetsahnak: our missing and murdered Indigenous sisters, edited by Christi Belcourt- Medicines to help us: traditional Metis plant us, by Christi Belcourt- Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists exhibit- Bob Marley's War- Haile Selassie's speech Towards African unity, 1963- Classically trained indigenous pianist Jeremy Dutcher- Gregory Schofield, Canadian Métis poet, beadwork artist, dramatist and non-fiction writer. - Odawa-Potawatomi artist Daphne Odjig- And please see the blog post for visual accompanimentConnect:- Christi twitter - Christi instagram - The Heart Gallery Instagram- The Heart Gallery website- Rebeka Ryvola de Kremer InstagramCredits:Samuel Cunningham for podcast editing, Cosmo Sheldrake for use of his song Pelicans We, podcast art by me, Rebeka Ryvola de Kremer.

Roy L Hales/ Cortes Currents - According to local musician Jemma Hicken, when the Gorge Harbour Marina partially shut down for renovations this summer, they also closed one of the most popular music venues on Cortes Island. “Me and a lot of my musician friends have been playing at the Gorge and have been paid to play at the Gorge - which is amazing on Cortes. You don't often find paying gigs here. Then the Gorge shut down most of its operations this year, and I think a lot of the community felt like there was a big hole left by the lack of live music. There's been a couple of attempts at organizing live music around the island. I know that there's live music happening at the Co-op on Saturday nights, which is awesome. We're going to have live music for the Friday Markets as well.” Sean and Catriona provided the first of a series of concerts that Hicken and co-host Louis Belcourt are organizing. Radio Sean: “We had a fair number of people show up. More than we expected on the first day of the series. I was pretty happy with the way it turned out.“ I would call the audience smallish, but intimate. There were no more than a dozen people at its largest extent during the second set, and probably no more than 20 in total. As the Commons is set back, there were also no disruptive conversations spilling over from the Market. Everyone at the concert was there to listen. Belcourt explained, “We are attempting to put on live music every Friday from 1 to 3 PM during the Friday Markets. We've been working with Manda Aufochs Gillespie from the Cortes Foundation and in support, with the radio as well, to try to get some live music for the community. It'll be a lovely revolving door of local musicians who want to play.” “We're just filling the schedule in right now. Please reach out if you like to play, if you have upwards of an hour and a half of material and reach out to us. Just show up to the Friday Market at any time between one and three and talk to Louis or Jemma.” Jemma Hicken: “Especially if you want to play July 7th, or July 14th.” Hicken said they have Rick Bockner booked for July 21. Jemma Hicken: “Maybe Amy is going to play with him as well. My partner and I are going to be playing at some point. We haven't booked our date yet, but I'll let you know when it happens.” Radio Sean: “There's a whole lineup of amazing musicians from Cortes, Quadra and beyond that are going to be here. So come on out.”

Jason talks to Brooker Belcourt, Founder of Covey; an online platform for new inspiring portfolio managers to earn credibility by sharing their best ideas online in order to establish a track record and hopefully establish a career input for the management.Episode Highlights1.20: Covey seeks to solve the problem of finding investment analysts by creating a community to find and reward the best investment analysts so that we can all copy them and generate higher returns.3.07: People use Covey as a way to get into investing or to learn more about it or to play with virtual cash before playing with real cash and they use it to earn rewards.4.19: Covey tracks 50 matrix in real time and you have a shareable portfolio that's like probably the most robust mock portfolio software online right now. 7.09: Brooker explains that they post all trades to an immutable ledger so that the client won't have to hire auditors to come and verify their fidelity account or their e-trade account, which is actually really expensive.10.03: Brooker has observed that the great managers, great analysts tend to stay great and it has been described in academic research as the phenomenon called performance persistence.11.27: There are a ton of barriers to entry to becoming a great investment analyst. If you went to some big investment bank, you could probably become an investment analyst. But otherwise, if you're great, you may not be discovered, says Brooker.13.47: Brooker have received a lot of interest from the hedge funds to buy their analyst data and what we have to do though is structure the right deal that benefits the community of people who contributed that data.15.08: Brooker says that they had to think with their community how do they actually identify who is an amazing investment analyst and they came up with five or six metrics and looked across things like total return of course.18.57: Doing something that is totally new for you and getting VCs on board was probably the highest hurdle for us, says Brooker.3 Key PointsBrooker explains why community database information is valuable to others than to the people who are looking in Covey's ideas.In 2023, we are going to be launching the Covey copy trading style product that allows you to invest in the top analyst list, says BrookerBrooker explains how that entire reward mechanism allocates rewards to the different analysts. Is it just based solely on short term performance over a period of time or are there other metrics taken to consideration?Tweetable Quotes"It always struck me as odd that where this data rich world is investing and yet we have no way of like sorting through the masses to find the best." – Brooker"We are going to build more infrastructure to make it easier for people to follow and get the benefits of following the best people and little branches of investing.' – Brooker"If we built a fund around the top analyst and their ideas, we could allow anyone to invest in that front and then we can compensate some of the undiscovered investment analysts who otherwise wouldn't have been able to manage money." - BrookerResources MentionedFacebook – Jason Pereira's FacebookLinkedIn – Jason Pereira's LinkedInWoodgate.com – Sponsor Hosted on Acast.

This is the Minnesota Native News Health Report. I'm Marie Rock.Federal health officials are potentially near approving coronavirus vaccines for infants and young children. This week….learn more on what that means....and hear a reflection on how the pandemic has been for one contemporary artist. Feven Gerezgiher reports.[Music]STORY A - VaccinesThe Food and Drug Administration recently determined both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines appear “safe and effective” for ages 6 months and older.On June 15th, advisors to the FDA recommended authorizing the coronavirus vaccines for children under 5.Next the FDA and CDC meet to determine whether to move forward with the authorizations. Once approved, vaccinations for children and infants could begin within days, according to the White House.[Music]STORY B - Pandemic ReflectionThe last two years of the pandemic have brought plenty of devastation…the loss of in-person connections….disruption to many school programs….and the loss of first speakers.Following the all night Northern Spark arts festival in St. Paul, I connected with one creative about how things have been and what she's been thinking about.My name is Silvia Houle. I'm an enrolled member of Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa from Belcourt, North Dakota. And I am an Anishinaabe contemporary artist.I'm doing all right… I don't know why, I didn't sleep too good last night, but I'm doing all right other than that. Processing the trauma of waking up [laughs] but otherwise I'm feeling pretty good.Sylvia described the last two years as life altering.Life will never be the same again, after all this, you know. Because I'd say it's like, probably, if not as impacting but a lot more impacting than some other events that happened in the last 20 years.Actually one of the bigger impacts is that I lost my dad in 2020 and I wasn't able to see him in the hospital because of COVID protocols before he passed so that was really hard. And what was hard after that, is that because of the social distancing and the COVID being a lot more intense back then, it made it hard to be around people especially when you're in the grieving process and so it was a big struggle with that.Sylvia's father passed away of stage four cancer, and she said the grief nearly led her to stop creating art. As the world re-opened over the past year, however, she said opportunities to work with nonprofits and school programs offered a way back to her craft.At the Northern Spark arts festival, Sylvia helped oversee attendees painting on part of a large-scale installation.I really love being a part of those kinds of events and activities because you get to see people like open up, like perfect strangers….But it's just the opportunity to see people to just like, see them open up and see them express themselves. And sometimes, they only even don't even do that around people that they're regularly around, you know. So I always feel like that's like a special treat to see that. And there were a lot of people at that event in particular that just got right into it. They didn't hesitate or anything, a lot of them. Sylvia said she's been creating art her whole life, yet only became a full-time artist in the last year. She finds joy in helping others get in touch with their creativity.…To be able to allow people to express themselves and encourage them to like have fun with art, have fun with expression, and don't worry about being overly technical because that comes further along the line when they're ready to take that on, you know. That all starts in scribbles, smudged paints or just like little glob of clay or whatever you decide to be creative with.Summer is a busy time for artists, Sylvia said, and she is figuring out what hers will look like. For now, she looks forward to a sun dance ceremony and continuing work on a community mural project.For the Minnesota Native News Health Report, I'm Feven Gerezgiher.
Note: This is a re-release of my very first episode with some post production edits and in honor of my dad's 80th birthday. On today's podcast I have the honor of having James Lovell, director of development for the Chief Seattle Club in Seattle, WA as a guest. Not only has James been an advocate for the homeless, specifically in the Native American community, he has become a good friend. James also is a member of the Turtle Mountain Band reservation of the Chippewa nation near Belcourt, ND which is where my dad's native side is from. Today we discuss the Chippewa, or Ojibwe, the heritage, culture, artwork and travels of this great band of American Indians.

Brooker Belcourt, CEO of Covey, joins the podcast to discuss his analyst platform and its ‘alpha algorithm' that has been able to produce outperformance through its stock and ETF picks and crypto calls. Content Highlights Covey's contrarian thesis: Retail analysts are every bit as good, if not better, than institutional analysts (4:10); The idea of a platform to aggregate analyst opinion is not new. But very recent history has proven Covey correct: its analysts predicted the drop in cryptocurrencies and rise in value stocks over that have transpired over the last week (5:53); The ‘alpha algorithm' and how that works (6:58); What is Covey's algorithm picking up right now? (11:03); Some highlights: Long commodities, fertilizer stocks like Mosaic (MOS), financials, energy stocks, and a few beaten-up tech names like Facebook/Meta (FB) and Alibaba (BABA). Short cryptos has been taken off (14:46); Isn't Covey just chasing past performance hoping for future results? (17:20) Great investors appear to have staying power, regardless of environment (23:27); Background on the guest and how he came to start Covey (28:11); Deeper discussion on how Covey's top analysts are positioning their portfolios right now (36:39); For More Information Website: Covey.io; Twitter: @Covey_io;

Welcome to episode 25! This week Sandra talks about Belcourt Castle located in New Port Rhode Island. This mansion was originally designed to be a summer cottage for Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont. Construction began in 1891 and was completed in 1894. This mansion has been passed over to different families and has been abandoned and refurbished a few times since 1894. While it was owned by the Tinney family stories started circulating about haunted artifacts, and ghosts walking among the grounds. Today it is owned by Carolyn Rafaelian, the owner of Alex and Ani. She is currently renovating the mansion to bring it back to its former glory. However, people wonder if it is still haunted. Later, Danielle talks about the surprising connection between famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and the slaying of his mistress, Martha “Mamah” Borthwick. Taliesin was built by Wright as a type of hideaway for Borthwick and her children. One day this ended abruptly in tragedy when a disgruntled handyman retrieved an ax and gasoline when everyone, but Wright, was at home having lunch. Seven people were killed and two survived the brutal attack. Carlton, the murderer died a few weeks later after a failed attempt of poisoning himself.
