Przejechaliśmy najwyżej położoną, asfaltową drogą na świecie – Karakorum Highway.Odkryliśmy bajkowe łąki Fairy Meadows, z których można podziwiać „zabójczą górę” Nanga Parbat. W programie pełnej przygód podróży były też: przejażdżka łodzią po jeziorze Attabab, należącym do najpiękniejszych na naszej planecie, emocjonujący spacer po jednym z najniebezpieczniejszych na świecie mostów, wiszącym nad rzeką Hunza i podziwianie imponującego lodowca Passu.Zwiedziliśmy Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Khaplu, Ganesh, Karimabad z historycznymi fortami Baltit i Altit oraz Peszewar, starożytne miasto leżące na dawnym szlaku handlowym między Afganistanem, Azją Centralną i Indiami. Gościem Jerzego Jopa był Mirosław Lubarski, doradca zarządu w Grupie Polskie Składy Budowlane Handel.

Cette alpiniste franco-suisse, méconnue au départ, arrivée sur la pointe des pieds et des crampons dans le club très restreint des «huitmillistes», a finalement achevé l'ascension des 14 sommets de plus 8000 mètres.  En juin 2023, la Franco-Suisse Sophie Lavaud a achevé au sommet du Nanga Parbat, situé au Pakistan, son marathon des cimes en atteignant son 14ème sommet de plus de 8000 mètres, réussissant là où les Français avaient toujours échoué. Elle est donc LE premier Français (tous genres confondus), la première Suissesse mais aussi LE premier Canadien (tous genres confondus) à achever ces quatorze 8000. Ce genre de grand chelem himalayen, que seule une quarantaine d'alpinistes au monde détient à ce jour, suscite fascination, admiration mais aussi interrogations sur les évolutions de l'himalayisme et la pratique de l'alpinisme en général. Or, Sophie Lavaud incarne bien plus que ces nouvelles expéditions guidées, avec porteurs et apports d'oxygène qui viennent bousculer une certaine aristocratie de la haute altitude. Japanese toymaker MegaHouse has unveiled a miniature Rubik's Cube, measuring just 0.3 grams across. The aluminum cube, made from a single face, is about a 1,000th of the original size, with each side measuring just 1.6 millimetres. Also, Mount Everest, the world's tallest mountain, continues to grow, reaching 8,849 meters in 2019. Steve House began venturing into the high mountains as a teenager, and has since built a career on climbing, guiding and coaching. By the time he published his book Beyond the Mountain in 2009, Reinhold Messner said House was “at the top of mountaineering.”  House's life in climbing has taken him all over the world. His most famous ascent may be the Central Pillar of Nanga Parbat's Rupal Face, a climb he completed with Vince Anderson. But he has compiled an impressive list of first ascents and new routes in Alaska, the Canadian Rockies, the Alps and the Karakoram. Steve has been a professional mountain guide since 1992, and in 1999 he became the ninth American to achieve IFMGA certification. But these days House lives in a small Austrian mountain town with his wife and two kids. In the mornings he spends time getting outside, while the later part of the day is dedicated to working with his company Uphill Athlete. He retired from professional climbing in 2020.  In this episode, we revisit passages from Steve's book Beyond the Mountain, discuss fatherhood, and finding his way in his new home in Austria. We learn about the climb that drove him to focus more on training and preparation, and eventually led him to start his company, Uphill Athlete.  And, we learn more about how he thinks about climbing and what it is to be human—to focus on the act of becoming rather than being. Sever Pakistanu sa môže zdať ako netradičná dovolenková destinácia, no napokon vás čakajú milí ľudia, autentické jedlo, marhuľové háje aj naozaj exponované výhľady z veľkých výšok. Práve cestou do Pakistanu sa začína už desiata séria cestovateľského Všesvet podcastu. Steve House sees the convergence of technical climbing and mountaineering as "New Alpinism." And the athleticism required to be an all-around alpinist demands a training regimen as diverse as the skills of the blended climbing disciplines used. His coaching company, Uphill Athlete, grew from his work helping lead other alpinists, mountaineers and athletes based on personal learnings and fundamental endurance coaching. For 21 years, Steve House was a professional climber and has been a professional mountain guide since 1992. His most famous ascent was Nanga Parbat's Rupal Face in 2005, which earned him and Vincent Anderson the acclaimed The Piolet d'Or ("Golden Ice Axe"). Reinhold Messner called him "The best high-altitude climber in the world." He has also compiled an impressive list of first ascents and new routes in Alaska, the Canadian Rockies, the Alps and the Himalayas. Since retiring from professional climbing, House has coauthored "Training for the New Alpinism" and "Training for the Uphill Athlete," as well as becoming a co-founder of the coaching company Uphill Athlete.

And the summits keep going with many firsts, records, and races to the top thanks to this summer's, and for that fact, this spring's, unusually stable weather across the Himalayas. It's not uncommon for climbers to have three, four, or even five, or more 8000er summits this year. Let's run a few down with more to come before it's all over. Big Picture The season is winding down. I think the action is over on Nanga Parbat. The snow conditions were getting too dangerous a couple of weeks ago, and several highly skilled and experienced climbers abandoned their efforts. On Gasherbrum II, there are a few climbers, mostly the record seekers, still to make attempts, the same for Gasherbrum I. Several K2 climbers are moving to Broad Peak to attempt their double. And on K2, you never know for sure, but I think it will be quiet until winter when someone will try. Well over 90% of the K2 summits occur in July. Still, some seep into mid-August, and there have been a couple in October, but that was decades ago when the weather was much different. Note, expect the same for Everest – a winter, no O's, perhaps with a “solo” label even though attached to a commercial team for logistics. Life has become interesting, and I'm not sure in a good way. This year, 2022, the weather has been good overall. Occasionally, heavy snow storms have offered challenges to teams, but on the whole, most people will not claim they didn't summit because of bad weather. As of July 30, I estimate 190 K2 summits and three deaths or 1.6%. I have reached out to Pakistani Officials for an official count. Climb On! Alan Memories are Everything

My current favorite genre is disaster stories about mountain climbing. The death statistics for some of these mountains, especially ones in the Himalayas are truly insane. To give an example, let me tell you about a mountain most people have never heard of: Nanga Parbat. It's a 8,126 meter "wall of ice and rock", sporting the tallest mountain face and the fastest change in elevation in the entire world: the Rupal Face. I've posted a picture above, but these really don't do justice to just how gigantic this wall is. This single face is as tall as the largest mountain in the Alps. It is the size of ten empire state buildings stacked on top of one another. If you could somehow walk straight up starting from the bottom, it would take you an entire HOUR to reach the summit. 31 people died trying to climb this mountain before its first successful ascent. Imagine being climber number 32 and thinking "Well I know this mountain has a 100% fatality rate, but why not, let's give it a go!" The stories of deaths on these mountains (and even much shorter peaks in the Alps or in North America) sound like they are out of a novel. Stories of one mountain in particular have stuck with me: the first attempts to climb tallest mountain face in the alps: The Eigerwand. The Eigerwand: First Attempt The Eigerwand is the North face of a 14,000 foot peak named "The Eiger". After three generations of Europeans had conquered every peak in the Alps, few great challenges remained in the area. The Eigerwand was one of these: widely considered to be the greatest unclimbed route in the Alps. The peak had already been reached in the 1850s, during the golden age of Alpine exploration. But the north face of the mountain remained unclimbed. Many things can make a climb challenging: steep slopes, avalanches, long ascents, no easy resting spots and more. The Eigerwand had all of those, but one hazard in particular stood out: loose rock and snow. In the summer months (usually considered the best time for climbing), the mountain crumbles. Fist-sized boulders routinely tumble down the mountain. Huge avalanaches sweep down its 70-degree slopes at incredible speed. And the huge, concave face is perpetually in shadow. It is extremely cold and windy, and the concave face seems to cause local weather patterns that can be completely different from the pass below. The face is deadly. Before 1935, no team had made a serious attempt at the face. But that year, two young German climbers from Bavaria, both extremely experienced but relatively unknown outside the climbing community, decided they would make the first serious attempt. One of the things which makes the climb of the Eiger unique is that nearly the entire face is visible from a mountain resort below. Residents of Kleine Scheidegg, a small resort town in the pass, could look directly at the north face when the weather cleared and observe all of these attempts to climb the face. All of this was in place long before the first attempt was made, so when the two young Bavarians decide to make an attempt, the world's press was literally staying at the hotel watching the men through binoculars when the clouds cleared. Not knowing how long the attempt would take, they brought six days of supplies, estimating it would take two to three days to achieve the summit. They started off quite strong, making it all the way up to Eigerwand station before setting up camp for the night. Yes, you read that correctly. There are train tracks a third of the up the mountain. Several strong Sherpas from various Nepali operators fixed the ropes on Nanga Parbat over the past few days thus facilitating a handful of clients to reach the summit. In total, there were 18 summits consisting of six members supported by 12 Sherpas, a 1:2 ratio of support. Pakistan issued 100 (member with support) permits this season; thus, look for more activity on Nanga. Big Picture The 2022 summer season is moving along with few, if any, issues reported by the teams. Most are talking about getting the fixed ropes put in by their super-strong Sherpas to the low-medium altitude camps while on Nanga, we are using a few summits. A shortage of porters and general support due to the record number of permits issued have delayed some teams from reaching their base camps. As usual in Pakistan, the weather is variable with great, then tough days. Nothing out of the ordinary. Most of the commercial teams are taking the usual trade routes. A few independent climbers are taking less-traveled routes, but overall, this summer, climbing in Pakistan looks a lot like climbing in Nepal. Not a huge surprise since most of the teams are led by large Nepali operators using their proven formula of high oxygen rates with strong Sherpa support. As for summits on the most-watched K2, don't expect them for another couple of weeks at the earliest. Most K2 summits occur between July 25 and August 1. Climb On! Alan Memories are Everything

THE LAST MOUNTAIN  chronicles Tom Ballard, a British rock climber, alpinist and the son of mountaineer Alison Hargreaves, who perished on K2 in 1995. Mother and son, two of the greatest climbers of all time, died at almost the same age, in the same mountain range, both doing what they loved best. Directed by Emmy award-winner Chris Terrill and produced by BAFTA award winner Olivia Lichtenstein, THE LAST MOUNTAIN  follows Kate Ballard on an emotional journey to say goodbye to her brother on Nanga Parbat. Using archive footage from 1995 and Tom's own extraordinary footage taken up until the days before his death, the film explores what made Tom continue his ascent with Italian climber Daniele Nardi after the other two members of the expedition turned back. Combining years of intimate, unseen family archive with footage of the family that director, Chris Terrill, has shot in the years since Alison's passing, the documentary tells the unforgettable story of a family who lived - and were prepared to die - for the love of scaling the icy heights of the world's highest peaks, and explore what it is that drives people to pit themselves against nature at its most ferocious and unforgiving. THE LAST MOUNTAIN features revealing interviews with those left behind, among them: Alison's widower, Jim Ballard, Tom's sister, Kate, Stefy, Tom's girlfriend, Karim Hayat, who left the expedition stating he 'did not want to lose [his] life there,' and Alex Txikon who led the search for Tom and Daniele and found their bodies. They completed the climb in a little over a week and the accent won him and Anderson the prestigious Piolet d'Or accolade.
