British Army officer Major Jon Armstrong discusses how resistance networks are formed and utilised, particularly in the current Russo-Ukraine war. From the makeshift resistance efforts seen in Ukraine to Sweden's carefully structured Total Defence approach, resistance networks can play a crucial role in a country's defence strategy. Armstrong talks about the different elements of resistance activities, focusing on Ukraine, and examines their successes and limitations. He addresses the challenges in controlling these networks, along with the potential post-conflict difficulties of reintegration; warning of the risk of civil strife if such groups are sidelined. As nations plan for future conflicts, Armstrong argues that they must not only build resistance networks, but also integrate them within the broader operational strategy. Jon Armstrong is a British Army officer with over 20 years of experience. His research interests include land operations and irregular warfare. He holds a BA in War Studies and an MA in Military and Security Studies from King's College London. Jon Armstrong is an amazingly versatile performer, composer, educator and thinker. Perhaps that should come as no surprise, since as a young man in his home town in Oregon, Jon not only played in a Buddhist marching band but also worked 12 hour shifts in a diaper factory! After a highly successful career in LA, he now teaches at Idaho State University, where he's established a fantastic commercial music program, while still performing and composing and at an extremely high level.Jon grew up in Corvallis, Oregon, and at a very young age was already deeply involved in music, learning any instrument he could get his hands on and playing in a variety of groups. His studies at the California Institute for the Arts were followed by seven years in Los Angeles, where he worked as a freelancer, band-leader and composer... and also founded three educational jazz programs! He moved to Pocatello to become Director of Jazz Studies at Idaho State University in 2015, which he has evolved into the new Commercial Music Program. Much of our discussion centers around his thoughts on pedagogy and building the commercial music program.Dorico Professional music notation and composition software from Steinberg. This week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome two guests, a married couple, Vanessa and Jon Armstrong. Vanessa's website opens to a close-up headshot which is inscribed, “Why is my face so big…?” Right below that it says, “Vanessa likes to write about things. Sometimes she gets paid for it.” I suspect a sense of humor I am going to enjoy! Her bio goes on to say, “Vanessa started her adult life as a very serious businessperson (she got not one, but TWO master's degrees!) and spent most of her twenties working for very serious companies and moving every two years or so. In her early thirties, she and her dog Penny moved to Los Angeles, where she began writing and dying her hair in different colors. Vanessa continues to live in Los Angeles with Penny, her daughter Maddie, and her husband Jon, who is a professional magician (no, she doesn't know how he does his tricks). Her writing has appeared in publications like The New York Times, Smithsonian Magazine, Vulture, The LA Times, Travel + Leisure, Glamour Magazine, Atlas Obscura, and /or Film. Her hair is currently blue, but she is thinking of dying it purple.” It was Vanessa's article in Travel + Leisure, I Married a Cruise Ship Entertainer — Here's What My Life at Sea Is Really Like that brought the Armstrongs to my attention. I reached out to Vanessa to come and chat on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, and she was so kind as to introduce me to Jon. Jon is from Orlando, Florida, and became fascinated by the magic he saw in the theme parks all around him. He acted on that fascination and—are you ready for this—at age 20, became the resident magician at Walt Disney World! After 5 years at Disney World, Vegas beckoned Jon and he became a headliner at Caesar's Magical Empire. That spring boarded Jon to do tours all over the world including—thankfully for our listeners—on cruise ships. Jon has also worked on many films and television shows as a magic consultant and designer, is co-creator of the IDW comic series Smoke and Mirrors, and stars in the documentary Magicians: Life in the Impossible. Jon just published a book, How To Win: Essays and Routines for the Stand-Up Magician. Wow, what a dynamic couple! Support the show

The Traxion Podcast - Racing video games, esports and sim racing
Jon Armstrong is a busy person. Alongside competing in the 2021 Junior World Rally Championship alongside co-driver Phil Hall for the Codemasters DiRT Rally Team, he's also a game designer at Codemasters during the week. For those who perhaps aren't aware, Jon starting rallying and working is way up the championships, competing in Ireland, the British Rally Championship, the Junior European Rally Championship, and then onto the Drive DMACK Cup and the WRC 2 competition. But then, faced with the difficulty of raising the budget required to compete at the very top of rallying, he turned to esports, winning the 2018 (and finishing second in 2019) WRC esports competition. This then led to working on the later stages of DiRT Rally 2.0 development, a full-time role at the company and now the opportunity to compete on the world stage once again. The season is going well too, winning the first JWRC round on the Croatia Rally. With all of that in mind, we talked to Jon on this latest podcast episode, discussing his early career, sim rallying and his curent JWRC season so far.
