In the second episode of our new Mike Nichols Marathon, we are following up our last month's conversation with a chat about a movie Mike Nichols was planning to direct as his debut before Edward Albee's adaptation came across his lap, which is The Graduate. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about Nichols "graduating" from stage directing into bona fide movie work, the many ways in which The Graduate upsets the 1960s status quo and how it is subtly cinematic in contrast to the studio fare of the time. We also talk about what we think about Ben Braddock's alleged listlessness, Mrs Robinson's grooming behavior and how the movie as a whole struck a chord with young audiences who also felt like locking their parents in a church and taking a bus to nowhere. Our sampler of the 60s ends this month with “The Graduate”! We get to see Annie Sullivan in a whole new light as the OG cougar Mrs. Robinson, one of our favorite Stepford Wives as her unwitting daughter Elaine, the mayor from Jaws in a surprisingly fascinating role as the spurned husband, Roz from 9 to 5 and Mr Feeney putzing around in the pool, a no nonsense Norman Fell, Dick Lemon working the front desk and at the center of it all, Tootsie as Ben Braddock the epitome of midcentury modern ennui. And here’s to you, Miss Gilmore—Jess loves you more than you will know. We’re breaking out of our usual mold with this episode just like Ben Braddock broke out of society’s expectations in The Graduate. We’re taking a closer look at some scenes that look a lot like the 1967 classic, even if they never mention the movie by name. What does Jess and Rory’s bus ride have in common with Dustin Hoffman and Katharine Ross’s? Is this movie relatable over 50 years later? And why are graduation ceremonies so long? Cue up that Simon and Garfunkel (or, you know, “Pomp and Circumstance”)—we’re here to tackle those questions and more! With the month of June coming to a close, so does the LBGTQ+ theme. Jonathan (@berkreviews) chose Tangerine (2015) directed by Sean Baker and starring Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, Mya Taylor, and Karren Karagulian. Neither he nor Corey (@coreyrstarr) had seen it, but they both loved his 2017 film The Florida Project. Tangerine follows Sin-Dee (Rodriguez) and Alexandra (Taylor) on Christmas Eve as they search for Chester (James Ransone), Sin-Dee's pimp and boyfriend, who may have betrayed her trust. The film starts off a little rocky and hard to watch, but by the end won both, Jonathan and Corey, over. episode 078 - The Graduate (1967) July brings the theme of Coming of Age movies and Corey has never seen director Mike Nichols' film The Graduate (1967). The film stars Dustin Hoffman as Ben Braddock as he tries to figure out "what's next," after college. He finds himself torn between two relationships one with Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) and her daughter, Elaine Robinson (Katharine Ross). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support
Noah Baumbach’s new THE MEYEROWITZ STORIES casts Dustin Hoffman on one side of a generational divide, which naturally brings to mind Hoffman’s breakout role as a character on the other side of that generation divide: Mike Nichols’ seminal 1967 comedy-drama THE GRADUATE. In this half of the discussion dedicated to that earlier film, we discuss how THE GRADUATE’s sympathies shift with age, argue over the nature of Ben Braddock’s affair with Mrs. Robinson, and swoon together over that perfect ending. Plus, a brief sampling of the mountain of feedback we’ve received on our recent episodes on BLADE RUNNER 2049 and MOTHER! Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about THE GRADUATE, THE MEYEROWITZ STORIES, or both by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730. **Show Notes** Articles cited: "The Best Thing About Blade Runner 2049 Is What It Isn't" at Vox.com Outro music: “Sound of Silence” by Simon &Garfunkel Learn more about your ad choices. It's not rebellion that defines youth (that's a given) but it's really how one rebels... In the case of Dustin Hoffman's Ben Braddock in The Graduate, his act of rebellion comes in the form of easy sex with the venerable Mrs Robinson played by Anne Bancroft. Juxtaposed to 60's counter-culture, Ben's form of revolt lacks a needed creativity or a new paradigm which was the hallmark of his more adventurous generational peers, which is why he is so unlikable. Matt and Mark discuss a film whose time may have passed but is still relevant in its capturing the 1967 zeitgeist, still making it worthy of discussion. Download: 085 The Graduate
This time, we talk about characters in theory, in practice, in play, and in design, with examples focusing on tabletop RPGs and some references to video games. This is a big topic worthy of more talk later on, when we have more instruments on the table, but this is a good start. Will references Robin D. Laws’ manner of iconic characters in this episode, which Laws once summarized like this: “A dramatic hero follows a character arc in which he is changed by his experience of the world. Examples: Orpheus, King Lear, Ben Braddock. An iconic hero undertakes tasks (often serially) and changes the world, restoring order to it, by remaining true to his essential self. Examples: Beowulf, Sherlock Holmes, Batman.” Robin Laws has more to say on the subject of iconic heroes in tagged posts on his old blog and his new blog, respectively. (Will talks too loud and too fast, he’s been made aware of it.) Design Games is made possible by our supporters at Patreon, where you can back NDP and Will right now. Every dollar helps.
