John Wick is not only the legend who inspired a multi-millionaire Hollywood franchise, but he is also the legendary game designer of Legend of the Five Rings, 7th Sea, Orkworld!, Cat, Wield, and so many others! He is also famous for his writing and opinions he shares on his YouTube channel. We don't agree on a lot of things, but we agree to disagree and I love it! In this chat we talked about D&D, it's many versions, whether if any of them is an RPG, we talk about how it is to be much harder on himself than on others, about movies and books that inspires him, about how professional criticism shouldn't exist. We also talked about game design, elegance in rules, how he sees himself as a discordian. We talked about some really awesomely weird games. And we talked about Banners and his new projects! It was really a fantastic episode! So listen up and get weird with us! Check out John's links! Join us for a captivating episode as we sit down with Kenneth Hite, a renowned writer and role-playing game designer. We will be treated to David Pickering's complete narration of "Who Fired the Phoenix?" This intriguing story was originally published in Asimov's in May 1981 and is part of the Adventures in Unhistory collection. At the end of the interview with Ken, we will also have the privilege of hearing Avram himself narrating the story, although, unfortunately, the narration is not complete.Kenneth Hite is well-known for his significant contributions to role-playing games, including Trail of Cthulhu and Night's Black Agents, and for his lead role in designing the 5th edition of Vampire: the Masquerade.Notably, Ken's most Davidson-coded credit is the SUPPRESSED TRANSMISSION series: http://www.sjgames.com/suppressed/Don't miss out on his engaging podcast co-hosted with fellow game designer Robin Laws, where they explore numerous Davidson-ish trails as well: https://www.kenandrobintalkaboutstuff.com/

Did we miss anything? We talk about time past, our schedules these days, the different platforms out there these days, and how we interact with memories (particularly Memories, the Facebook product). We meander a lot. We talk about building and rebuilding collections via auction lots, and spend a lot of time shouting out local superstar and friend-of-the-show Jim Zub, and the games of one Mr. Robin Laws. Squideye also winds up giving a fairly complete gameplay walkthrough of Cosmic Encounter, which isn't Twilight Imperium. And the clock is ticking on Audacity.

Episode 127 - Reviewing GM Advice (aka "I'm the Unknown Stunt Man") There's plenty of GM advice out there in roleplaying land, but what about advice on the advice? This time on the 'cast, Gaz is joined by the Lee Majors of roleplaying, Dirk the Dice, from the Grognard Files Podcast to discuss sources of GM advice. From the ancient tomes handed down by Gygax himself, to the latest hot takes from blogs and the internet, our scholarly heroes delve into the dungeons to bring out the shimmering gems of golden advice. You can discover more for yourself in the links below: Robin Laws has given many talks and written several documents, including Robin's Laws of Good Game Mastering Sly Flourish (Michael E. Robin Laws had a dream, which led him to write a short story, and use that to create The Yellow King Roleplaying Game. Once HP Lovecraft dreamed of a book called the Necronomicon. Will Robin's RPG turn out to be as baleful as that unsettling tome? There is only one way to find out... Also, it's nominated for an Ennie, along with companion work Absinth in Carcosa! Go vote now! To encourage you, Plot Points is going to be putting out an episode every day this week! Ben’s book on RPG adventure design, Encounter Theory, is on DriveThruRPG. Click here to pick up this essential volume! Like Plot Points? Support it on Patreon at the $2 level, and you’ll get a sneak peek into Ben’s book about the sale of TSR to Wizards of the Coast! This chapter concerns TSR West, an effort by TSR to open an LA office devoted to producing comic books, an effort that failed rather impressively. It is the product of a dozen interviews with professionals from comics, gaming, and Hollywood, and as far as I can reckon, it is a tale entirely untold until now. Image courtesy Pelgrane Press.

Watch this ISO episode on YouTube Blake, Jeb, and guest Ken Hite talk about the search for Nazi Plunder - lost treasure and art following WWII. Thanks to Ken Hite for joining us on this episode. You can find a huge archive of Ken's excellent podcast (with Robin Laws) titled Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff. Highly recommended! Ken's also a prolific author and game designer and if you like this episode and weird war history, you might especially enjoy his Osprey (fiction) book on Nazi Occultism. Also, if you enjoy vampires and Jason Bourne-style spy action, you should check out Night's Black Agents. Discussed in this Episode: About this rocket Jeb was asking about: It appears to say ПО РEЙXCTAГУ "Po Ree-stah-gu" Also, it appears to be a BM-XY launch system (not sure what values go in X or Y). Apparently, like the Brits called the V weapons "buzz bombs" because of their peculiar sounds, the Germans called this Russian rig "Stalin's Organ" because of its sounds. Per Ken, it translates into either "On to the Reichstag!" or possibly "to the Reichstag" like a package address." Walter Horn - a "monuments man" Martin Bohrman - a Nazi. Hitler's secretary and confidant. Jeb, haunted by WORLD AT WAR series intro. Austria's Lake Toplitz (pronounced To-Plitz-Say) was a treasure dump - found in 1957 In Florence - Rudolpho Siviero continues the hunt... Rodolfo Siviero ( 1911 - 1983 ) Nimoy Fashion Alert Austrian fire-men (and treasure hunters) search a lake.

Happy Thanksgiving (or black Friday :p) to our American listeners, and happy just another day to everyone else in the world! In this episode, we bring you our final review of the year. We open the dusty tomes and climb high into the eldritch mountains to explore a twisted and treacherous cabal of vampires who stole their immortality from the ancient masters of the land: The Tremere. Now, from their hidden Chantry in the Carpathians, they grapple with their new condition and war against their Cainite rivals - both from without and within…House of Tremere details the the origins of the aforementioned clan, from a house of Mages desperate to keep their immortality, to the year 1197. This book also details their legendary, ignoble chantry, Ceoris. House of Tremere was written by Robin Laws and published November of 2000 by White Wolf Publishing.

KICK ASS. BLOW SHIT UP. AND SAVE THE WORLD. It's typhoon season in 1960's Hong Kong. Through the drizzle, restaurant boats hawk noodles to pedestrians on the crowded boardwalk, lanterns and mirrors swing from pointed eaves and somewhere, deep in the bowel and muscle of the city, someone is getting the ever-living shit kicked out of them. THIS IS FENG SHUI. Feng Shui is a martial arts-themed role-playing game, designed by Robin Laws, published now by Atlas Games. The system is simple, with most detail being in the game's combat system. Combat is made to flow quickly, moving from one action scene to another very quickly. It was inspired and based on Hong Kong style action movies. Park your brooms at the door and come sit for a spell. It’s All Hallow’s Eve and we are delighted to present you with something special and truly ghastly to get you in the mood on this night of terrors. We had the distinct pleasure and honor of being joined by game designer, writer and podcaster Robin D. Laws who came by to GM us through the adventure “Candlewood Crescent” for "Fear Itself", the horror game based on the GUMSHOE system that he has designed and that Pelgrane Press has published. You may know Robin from the excellent "Ken and Robin talk about stuff"-podcast and as the creator of Feng Shui, HeroQuest, Trail of Cthulhu, Mutant City Blues, Hillfolk, Robin's Laws of Good Game Mastering and much more. The Kraken is a fabulous Gaming Retreat (not convention) in Germany, about half way between Berlin and Hamburg. Run by Runequest Gesellschaft e.V. a non-profit organisation, the event has very much a family feel to it, with previous guests becoming part of the organising team and new attendees welcomed to the bosom of gaming like a returning prodigal son. This year I had to make it a short trip due to Ryanair changing flight schedules among other things, but nevertheless it was worth it as always. The Kraken arrange a coach to pick up foreign travellers from Schönefeld airport (still being constructed after several years), with refreshments available on board and a chance to meet and greet other attendees – it’s a relatively painless introduction to the event itself. Arriving at the Schloss on Friday evening, food was being served (all drinks and food are included in the price) it was a warm welcome from the hosts – and already games were starting to spring up or be arranged ad hoc. I jumped in on a game of Cthulhu with Ralph, who I had convinced the previous year to run a game this time round. A Belgian, this was his first attempt at running a game in English – and a great job he did too. I think we can forgive someone who is not a native English speaker for only failing on one word – dungarees! Two Americans and another Brit rounded out the table which shows the diversity of nationalities at the event. On to Saturday morning and after a fine breakfast it was straight into the Chaosium seminar for their state of the nation pitch. An impressive five of the head honchos were in attendance and a good coverage of how the company is doing after a year or so of new management alongside some highlights of what’s coming in future months. I missed out on Robin Laws’ seminar in person, but thankfully there’s a video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsvCAiULq6Q I managed to fit in some axe throwing in the morning too, with the ever-patient and genial Risto taking people through the Atlatl, throwing knives, tomahawk, hatchet and two-handed axe. Excellent fun and just thing to get me in the mood for some medieval style gaming later. For the afternoon session I ran Pendragon – I’ve got a good stable of knights for this that I’ve been using for some time now, which is just as well given that my printer had died the (k)night before and I couldn’t use new ones. Again a multi-cultural table of players from Germany, Switzerland and America. We had fun dabbling with the fae realm, culminating in a fight with a giant simultaneously taking place with a dance-off between a chaste knight and the faerie queen. A fine barbecue was laid on then for the assembled guests. Attempts to shortcut the delivery of steak by going straight to the source were politely but firmly rebuffed as a danger to the supply chain. If there’s one thing a combo of Americans and Germans are good at, it’s flame-grilled meat. Vegan options we available… For the evening I got myself a place in Kenner’s Delta Green game. I’ve not had chance to properly review the new version, but it wasn’t massively different from the playtest, so no issues there. I’m used to having luck or “push” rolls from Cthulhu 7th ed, so it was mildly disappointing to be back in old school world were you often just straight up fail without the opportunity to make things worse for your character, but that aside, it’s all good. AK ran a great game, with a variety of nationalities present once again – and overall we were successful with few mental or physical casualties. I do love me some Delta Green. Sunday was going to be a short day due to inconvenient travel plans, but we determined to make the most of it. Kenners ran some Cthulhu and I’d got myself signed up for a playtest of Gianni’s WWII game defending the Russian motherland from the forces of the Reich. It was never going to go well for our brave soldiers, but we managed to get some glory and success for the People before ...

On this episode of Talking TableTop is a very special guest, the one and only Ken Hite. Ken is a professional game designer that has worked on GURPS, the Star Treck RPGs, Trail of Cthulhu, and Night's Black Agents as well as several dozen other projects. During this interview we discuss how Ken got into developing games, what the changing landscape has looked like for RPG designers over the last 30 year, and how me got into podcasting with his good friend Robin Laws.
This time, we talk about characters in theory, in practice, in play, and in design, with examples focusing on tabletop RPGs and some references to video games. This is a big topic worthy of more talk later on, when we have more instruments on the table, but this is a good start. Will references Robin D. Laws’ manner of iconic characters in this episode, which Laws once summarized like this: “A dramatic hero follows a character arc in which he is changed by his experience of the world. Examples: Orpheus, King Lear, Ben Braddock. An iconic hero undertakes tasks (often serially) and changes the world, restoring order to it, by remaining true to his essential self. Examples: Beowulf, Sherlock Holmes, Batman.” Robin Laws has more to say on the subject of iconic heroes in tagged posts on his old blog and his new blog, respectively. (Will talks too loud and too fast, he’s been made aware of it.) Design Games is made possible by our supporters at Patreon, where you can back NDP and Will right now. Every dollar helps. In the beginning, there was nothing. Then came forth a veritable array of drunk and ugly gods. What will they do, given unlimited power and ability? Will there be strife between them? Can they build a verdant and peaceful universe? Pantheon is a GMless game developed by Robin Laws and uses a unique narrative cage match system. "4 and change" Continuing from last episode: one last Great War tidbit. A bunch of things related to the number 4 (the square root of 16, which is how many episodes this is), and also things changing. Nobody was hurt this time, because time may change me, but I can't change the rules of fourth edition D&D. - Wraith: The Great War (best roleplayer!) other White Wolf historical settings for the Old World of Darkness also Apocalypse versus Forsaken -- topical, people! Justin's Great War GenCon experience - D&D 4 Essentials Heroes of the Fallen Lands, Forgotten Kingdoms, and... rules "Red Box vs. Unearthed Arcana" And then the ACTUAL new Red Box What do you need for D&D? Rules compendium is really all you need for game except character generator Player books include all basic rules and equipment DM set is weird, and so is the dice box -- for tiles buy frickin' tiles, for dice buy the red box, and for a straight DMG, why not get DMG 1 and 2, probably as cheap as the new box anyway and full of Robin Laws goodness - Ravenloft: "Is it bigger than a Red Box?" a complete game, great components, just a d20, a zillion minis modular, like Descent or Space Hulk, but with a Dracolich Incursion is another grid-tactics boardgame, which we may review later. - Gamma World: "Why are we even talking about this?! Why aren't we PLAYING?!" Some pent-up nerd rage: omitted mention of the White Wolf version Though it's up for debate -- "...including versions based on d20?" Basically 4e but more gonzo! Brad Murray's review: http://www.vsca.ca/halfjack/?p=757 Might be more enjoyable than our GaryCon Tomb of Horrors 3.5E adventure - iPhone 4: "iPhone, do this!" Voice activation is pretty good, power is better Tim Sullivan of Without Software - awesome iOS developer: http://withoutsoftware.com/ - Season 4 of Venture Brothers Hasn't aired in Canada yet It will make you grow a blonde mullet. - Something about change Also Heroscape being discontinued. KEEP WATCHING THE SKIES
