The 1970s Edition of Big Movie May rolls on with yet another selection from 1976. This one stars Dustin Hoffman in only his 2nd appearance on this show in a role that kind of defies description, so you'll just have to listen to the show. Enjoy Marathon Man. Beverly Hills, 90210 S9 Ep. 10: Marathon Man

The inspiring journey of Mahesh Salvi is truly impactful and motivational. From his early days, delivering milk and newspapers while walking around Goregaon, he built strength and endurance naturally. Climbing up and down at least 40-45 buildings every day gradually became a part of his life. Running for survival became a part of his lifestyle. In 2004, when he accidentally registered for the full 42 km instead of the 21 km in the first Tata Marathon, it marked a turning point in his life. Since then, he hasn't missed a single marathon in the past 20 years. Along with that, he participated in numerous marathons across the country alongside Milind Soman. His 1500 km stretch from Delhi to Mumbai was completed in 28 days, which was recognized by the Limca Book of World Records. What's particularly remarkable is that he managed all this while continuing his job at Kesari Tours. This entire journey was shared by Mahesh Salvi in a conversation with Aditya Joshi from Sports Katta.

Corinth native Kenneth Williams joins us by phone today to tell some stories about where his life has taken him. This includes 23 Boston Marathons, 22 consecutively, and he briefly ranked 3rd in the World Marathon Majors rankings for 80+ year old males. Kenneth is also a poster child for maintaining a family business and civic engagement.Marshall Ramsey, a nationally recognized, Emmy award winning editorial cartoonist, shares his cartoons and travels the state as Mississippi Today's Editor-At-Large. American cinema of the 1970's is generally known as the golden age of the paranoid thirller. Specifically, the paranoid political thriller. The genearl idealism of the 1960's was met with increasing cynicism by the 1970's, but do these films actually go for the politics of the era or are they just dealing with vibes? In this episode, we focus on two films of the era; The Parallax View (1974) and Good Guys Wear Black (1978). Is it possible that an early Chuck Norris film has more to say about American politics than a Warren Beatty film that was made during the Watergate hearings? We also briefly discuss a number of other films from the era, just to see if they're providing vibes or real content. Films discussed include; The Day of the Jackel (1973), The Spook Who Sat By The Door (1973) [see our previous episode], Marathon Man (1976), All the President's Men (1976), Three Days of the Condor (1975), The Domino Principle (1977), The China Syndrome (1979), and Cutters Way (1981). This era also saw a proliferation of Biker films after the box office success of Easy Rider (1969). Two that we discuss because of their Vietnam War connection are The Losers (1970) and Brotherhood of Death (1976). We also discuss two European examples just to see how the comparison works; Revolver (1973) and The Assassination (1972). Follow us at: Patreon / Twitter / Instagram / Letterboxd / Facebook

I was thinking a lot about thrillers that I watched as a kid and how many of them stayed with me longer than more kid-friendly genres. It is probably because I found them confusing and it forced my kid-brain to work twice as hard trying to figure them out. On this week's episode, I wanted to look at some of these thrillers from the 70s and 80s that stuck with me after seeing them on cable TV. They were so evocative that years later I would purposefully seek them out to fill in the blanks.First up, we have "The Conversation" from 1974, directed by Francis Ford Coppola. This thriller stars Gene Hackman as Harry Caul, a surveillance expert who becomes paranoid after recording a mysterious conversation. Coppola wrote the script in the mid-1960s but couldn't get it made until after the success of "The Godfather"? So her directed it between that film and its sequel. Worth it alone for the sound design, it is groundbreaking, earning Walter Murch an Academy Award nomination.Next is "Marathon Man" from 1976, directed by John Schlesinger. This film features Dustin Hoffman as a graduate student who gets caught up in a conspiracy involving a former Nazi war criminal, played by Laurence Olivier. One of the most famous scenes involves Olivier's character using dental torture. It is not fun. Moving on, we have "Blow Out" from 1981, directed by Brian De Palma. This neo-noir thriller stars John Travolta as a sound effects technician who accidentally records evidence of a political assassination. De Palma was inspired by Michelangelo Antonioni's "Blow-Up" (1966) and the real-life Chappaquiddick incident. Like “The Conversation,” the film's complex sound design plays a crucial role in the storytelling, making it a tremendous audio-visual experience. Finally, we have "Body Heat" from 1981, directed by Lawrence Kasdan. This steamy thriller features William Hurt and Kathleen Turner in a story of lust, deception, and murder. Turner's amazing performance as the femme fatale made her an instant star. The film was heavily influenced by classic film noir, particularly "Double Indemnity," and it brought the noir genre into the modern era with its explicit content and stylish direction. That's it for this episode of the Video Store Podcast. I hope you enjoy these picks as much as I do. Each of these films offers something unique, whether it's groundbreaking sound design, gripping suspense, or unforgettable performances. Until next time I see you in the shop, remember, be kind rewind.Subscribe to the Video Store Podcast* The Video Store Podcast* Apple Podcast* RSS This is a public episode. President Richard M. Nixon resigned August 9, 1974, and fifty years later the events surrounding his time in office still reverberate. Chief among them, the Watergate scandal and reporting by The Washington Post's Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein who began their work in 1972, dramatized in All the President's Men. Pentagram partner Michael Bierut explains why the movie matters, and praises William Goldman's adaptation of the original story by Woodward and Bernstein. Plus, learn about Goldman's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Marathon Man, and The Princess Bride, as well as David Fincher movies Zodiac with The Social Network and Radiohead thrown into the mix. On this special episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with the inventor of the Steadicam: Garrett Brown (YENTL, THE SHINING, BOUND FOR GLORY). He not only invented the tool but also frequently operated it, breaking the new system in on MARATHON MAN, ROCKY, and BOUND FOR GLORY in a single summer in the mid-1970s. With just a high-school level of understanding of physics, Garrett was able (after a long, isolated week in a remote hotel) to think through the fundamental design of the Steadicam which is still used today—50 years after its invention. We learn about the biomechanics of the human body that informed the design of the Steadicam and of the four key aspects of the device that isolate the camera from its operator. Garrett later recounts the day he first used the prototype on BOUND FOR GLORY (its first ever use in a feature film no less!) and how the late cinematographer Haskell Wexler fought for its inclusion. Garrett also shares how Stanley Kubrick utilized the unique properties of the Steadicam while filming THE SHINING to move the camera “like a ghost” through the empty halls of the Overlook Hotel and chase the indefatigable child actor Daniel Lloyd across miles of carpet. Few people can claim to have changed the way we make movies, and Garrett is one of them. - This episode is sponsored by the Dallas Film Commission Instagram: @dallasfilmcommission
For this week's Patreon episode, we watched the 1976 thriller "Marathon Man," directed by John Schlesinger, written by William Goldman, and starring Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Olivier, Roy Scheider, William Devane and Marthe Keller. In "Marathon Man," Hoffman plays a graduate student who becomes entangled in a plot by a Nazi war criminal — and his U.S. government allies — to recover stolen diamonds. The film reflects an of-the-time fascination with the afterlife of the Nazi regime, and especially those Nazis who escaped to South America. We have nothing but positive things to say about this movie and our conversation was interesting as well. You can find "Marathon Man" for rent or purchase on iTunes and Amazon and for streaming on Paramount+. There is also a new 4K blu ray to check out, if you're so inclined.
Welcome back to Unclear and Present Danger! It's our first episode of the new year and we're here with a pretty fun movie — “Executive Decision,” directed by Stuart Baird, produced by Joel Silver and starring Kurt Russell, Halle Berry, John Leguizamo, Oliver Platt, Joe Morton, Steven Seagal and many others. Music by, as you might expect, Jerry Goldsmith. In “Executive Decision,” an intelligence analyst played by Russell and a group of commandos, led by Seagal, must infiltrate a passenger jet bound for Washington DC that has been hijacked by a terrorist group. On board the jet is enough nerve toxin to kill everyone on the eastern seaboard. Most of the film is a tense standoff on the airliner, as the commandos try to defuse the nerve bomb and take down the terrorists, while the terrorists move forward with their mission.
