Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review! Today, we're exploring a classic blend of horror and satirical science fiction with The Stepford Wives (1975). Directed by Bryan Forbes and based on the novel by Ira Levin, this film delves into themes of feminism, identity, and the dark side of suburban conformity. The Stepford Wives follows Joanna Eberhart, played by Katharine Ross, who moves with her family from bustling New York City to the seemingly idyllic suburban community of Stepford, Connecticut. Joanna, a photographer and independent woman, soon becomes uneasy about the submissive and domestic behaviour of the other wives in town.As Joanna's discomfort grows, she befriends another newcomer, Bobbie Markowe, portrayed by Paula Prentiss. Together, they begin to investigate why the wives of Stepford seem so eerily perfect and compliant. Their investigation leads them to a chilling discovery about the men of Stepford and their disturbing vision of the “ideal” wife. The movie tackles themes of feminism and autonomy head-on, depicting a society that literally tries to manufacture the perfect wife, stripping women of their independence and individuality. It raises questions about gender roles and the extent to which societal pressures enforce conformity at the expense of personal freedom. The Stepford Wives is an excellent film for viewers interested in classic horror with a strong message. It's suitable for families with older teenagers, providing a springboard for discussions about individuality, societal expectations, and gender dynamics. It offers both thrills and an opportunity for insightful dialogue about the themes it portrays. Why It's a Must-Watch For fans of psychological thrillers, classic horror, or films that offer a critique of society, The Stepford Wives is a must-watch. Its combination of suspenseful storytelling, strong acting, and meaningful commentary ensures it remains relevant and impactful even decades after its release. So join us as we revisit the eerie perfection of Stepford and peel back the layers of one of cinema's most chilling tales about the quest for the “ideal” life. The Stepford Wives promises not only to entertain but also to provoke thought and discussion about the dark corners of societal norms.

We've got another overstuffed episode this time around as we take a look at two films from 1967. First up is BONNIE AND CLYDE, directed by Arthur Penn and starring Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty. It's a romanticized (Claude can spell it, but he can't say it) version of the story of a pair of outlaws who came to a violent end (as so many of them do). It's also the source of a bunch of tropes, from a Film Language standpoint. But that's not to take away from the impact that our other film, THE GRADUATE, had on the moviemaking industry. It was only the second film credit for Mike Nichols as a director, and while it wasn't the film debut of either Dustin Hoffman or Katharine Ross, it's the film that pushed both of them into greater prominence. COMING ATTRACTIONS: In our next episode we check out two very different views of films based on the work of Elmore Leonard. First we'll be chatting about JACKIE BROWN (1997), directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Pam Grier plus a bunch of nobodies (heh). And then it's on to OUT OF SIGHT (1998), directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez. Neither of them really burned up the box office but they're both a great ride. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wordsandmovies/support

Donnie Darko | Jake Gyllenhaal | Maggie Gyllenhaal | Drew Barrymore | Patrick Swayze | [2001] Join us as we digest the 2001 cult classic filled with many breakout talent Donnie Darko as a part of our Halloween Month Special. Donnie Darko is a 2001 American science fiction psychological thriller film written and directed by Richard Kelly and produced by Flower Films. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, Mary McDonnell, Katharine Ross, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle, Stu Stone, Daveigh Chase, and James Duval. Donnie Darko is set in October 1988 and it follows Donnie Darko, a troubled teenager who narrowly escapes a bizarre accident and has visions of Frank, a mysterious figure in a rabbit costume who informs him that the world will end in just over 28 days. Frank begins to manipulate Donnie to commit several crimes. Development began in late 1997 when Kelly had graduated from film school and started writing scripts. He took an early idea of a jet engine falling onto a house with no one knowing its origin and built the story around it. Kelly insisted on directing the film in person and struggled to secure backing from producers until 2000, when Barrymore's Flower Films agreed to produce it on a $4.5 million budget. Filming took 28 days in the summer of 2000, mostly in California. The soundtrack features a cover of "Mad World" by Tears for Fears by American musicians Gary Jules and Michael Andrews, which went to No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks. Donnie Darko premiered on January 19, 2001 at the Sundance Film Festival, followed by a limited theatrical release on October 26. Due to the film's advertising featuring a crashing plane and the September 11 attacks that have transpired a month and a half before, it was scarcely advertised, which affected its box office performance; it grossed just $517,375 in its initial run. Despite this, Donnie Darko received positive reviews and was listed No. 2 in Empire's "50 Greatest Independent Films of All Time" and No. 53 in Empire's "500 Greatest Movies of All Time". After reissues, it went on to gross $7.5 million worldwide. In March 2002, the film was released on home video, earning $500,000 in sales and gained a cult following. #DonnieDarko #JakeGyllenhaal #JenaMalone #MaggieGyllenhaal #DrewBarrymore #MaryMcDonnell #KatharineRoss #PatrickSwayze #NoahWyle #StuStone #DaveighChase #JamesDuval #RichardKelly #SeanMcKittrick #NancyJuvonen #AdamFields #StevenPoster #SamBauer #EricStrand #MichaelAndrews #FlowerFilms #PandoraCinema #NewmarketFilms #CultClassic #MovieByte #MovieBytePodcast #JustChillinEntertainment --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow Us: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/moviebytepod... Directed by George Roy Hill, the 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid stars Paul Newman as the affable Butch, Robert Redford as the somewhat more cantankerous Sundance, and Katharine Ross as school teacher turned outlaw Etta Place. At the time we meet them, Butch, Sundance and their Hole in the Wall Gang are already established and notorious outlaws, but the sun is quickly setting on their once-wild West. When Mr. E.H. Herriman of the Union Pacific Railroad takes umbrage at the way his trains have been targeted by the gang, he organizes a superposse to track down and kill Butch and Sundance, prompting the two outlaws, along with Etta, to abscond to Bolivia — where, amazingly, they manage for a time to enjoy a wildly successful second act to their criminal careers. But, alas, no one can outrun time forever.  Marking the finale of Viewfinder Film Club's first season, this episode also features our very first special guest: Logan Hall, grandson of Butch and Sundance's Oscar-winning cinematographer Conrad Hall, ASC. And here’s to you, Miss Gilmore—Jess loves you more than you will know. We’re breaking out of our usual mold with this episode just like Ben Braddock broke out of society’s expectations in The Graduate. We’re taking a closer look at some scenes that look a lot like the 1967 classic, even if they never mention the movie by name. What does Jess and Rory’s bus ride have in common with Dustin Hoffman and Katharine Ross’s? Is this movie relatable over 50 years later? And why are graduation ceremonies so long? Cue up that Simon and Garfunkel (or, you know, “Pomp and Circumstance”)—we’re here to tackle those questions and more! Mike Nichol's The Graduate from 1967 is a romantic comedy unlike any other, and the fact that it still holds up over half a century later is a testament to that fact. In a world where comedies require a joke a minute, The Graduate isn't afraid to let itself breathe for the sake of servicing a better story. But not every romantic comedy can conclude with "and they lived happily ever after..."The Graduate stars Anne Bancroft, Dustin Hoffman, Katharine Ross, William Daniels, Murray Hamilton, Brian Avery, and Buck Henry. The month of July is all coming of age stories. Corey (@coreyrstarr)has never seen The Graduate before so it was an obvious first choice. Jonathan (@berkreviews) watched it during his 366 challenge (read the review here) but was excited to see the film a second time. It was directed by Mike Nichols and stars Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, and Katharine Ross.  If you didn't catch this one at the time of recording it was available to stream on Prime Instant Video. Next week - Y Tu Mamá También (2001) Jonathan selected Y Tu Mamá También (2001) for the next film. It's one that came highly recommended to him and is on a few other film lists for coming of age movies. The film is directed by Alfonso Cuarón and stars Maribel Verdú, Gael García Bernal, Daniel Giménez Cacho, and Diego Luna. Corey hasn't seen this one either so it's a first for each. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support

Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Donnie Darko, the 2001 science fiction thriller, has been listed as one of the greatest science fiction films of all time, one of the greatest independent films of all time, as well as one of the greatest cult films of all time. Written and directed by first timer Richard Kelly, it takes place in 1988 during the key years of Generation X. With its ennui, bleakness, and humor, the film became a fan favorite and a beacon for its generation. Donnie, a young and troubled teenager, lives in a typical suburban town in Virginia. With its manicured lawns, happy families, and cute and fancy sports cars, nothing seems to be out of line. But looking at the high school students, we see something a bit different. Melancholy and angst makes everything less idyllic than it seems. And then Donnie begins to have visions which may lead to one young man turning the entire community upside down. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal in a career defining role that would lead him to become one of movie’s biggest stars, the film also includes strong supporting roles by Drew Barrymore, Katharine Ross, Noah Wyle, Jena Malone, and Patrick Swayze in a part that is out of character for the actor. With Arrow Films releasing the 2017 special addition box set of the film, Dark Discussions revisits the classic movie. Mark, Aaron, and Tim are seduced by plastics. We explore what turned out to be a pivotal film in Hollywood history. The Graduate paved the way for many films to come, from casting lead actors, film structure, cinematography, and to the use of music in film. We explore the complexities of Ben's relationships, speculate about the ending, and flesh out the time period in which the film was made. About the film: One of the most beloved American films of all time, The Graduate earned Mike Nichols a best director Oscar, brought the music of Simon & Garfunkel to a wider audience, and introduced the world to a young actor named Dustin Hoffman. Benjamin Braddock (Hoffman) has just finished college and is already lost in a sea of confusion and barely contained angst when he becomes sexually involved with a friend of his parents', the indomitable Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), before turning his attention to her college-age daughter (Katharine Ross). Visually imaginative and impeccably acted, with a clever, endlessly quotable script by Buck Henry (based on the novel by Charles Webb), The Graduate had the kind of cultural impact that comes along only once in a generation.
