The assassination of Charlie Kirk was a devastating blow to conservatives, but almost as shocking was the response from parts of the left. Major figures issued the expected denunciations, yet plenty of ordinary progressives celebrated the violent death of a father and husband or mocked his memory online. Conservatives learned that some of their neighbors were perfectly willing to cheer the murder of a political opponent. Since then, trade wars, foreign wars, and the usual daily controversies have offered convenient distractions from a much darker realization: Something about American politics has changed. The Trump administration secured a flurry of big wins recently across several different categories. On immigration we have seen the deportation of Hattians who lost their Temporary Protected Status, a $100,000 fee for H-1Bs, and a pause on immigrant visas. British political commentator Melanie Phillips recently made a social media post claiming that the British are not allowed to have a national identity but Israelis are required to have one. The arguments stemmed from her belief that the British were not a real ethnic group with a right to a collective self-determination, while the Israelis do share a real ethnic bond, so their claims are valid. When I first entered the public arena, the focus of my work was almost entirely on why the Right needed to take power seriously. Conservatives had suffered a devastating string of political and cultural losses because they focused on argument and ideology while paying little attention to the way power actually worked. That criticism drew plenty of hostility from defenders of the status quo who did not appreciate some rookie pointing out why decades of conservative leadership had produced so little. It turns out I was not alone. Popular voices, including Matt Walsh and John Doyle, now openly support conservatives taking and wielding power effectively. That disagreement has launched another round of public debate over the pursuit of power, but the argument is only a proxy for a larger battle over JD Vance, foreign policy, and the future of MAGA. Lindsay Clancy is on trial for the horrific crime of allegedly murdering her three children after sending her husband out to do errands. Massachusetts Democrat Gov. For decades, truck driving remained one of the best options for blue-collar Americans to achieve a middle-class lifestyle. In a world where overpriced college degrees were required for the most simple jobs, trucking allowed a man to care for his family with relatively little time or money invested. Now foreign labor cartels are moving in to dominate the industry, displacing native-born Americans while using ethnic favoritism to corner the market. The internet has done an admirable job hobbling the corporate left-wing media's ability to control the population through a single narrative. But that blessing comes with regrettable costs. The speed of information and the incentive to push hot takes onto social media mean that when a public figure dies, there is an immediate race to decide which competing narrative will define his legacy. When Lindsey Graham died suddenly of heart failure over the weekend, conspiracy theories about foreign assassination plots immediately began to circulate online. Many leftists openly celebrated his death, and the reactionary impulse of conservatives drove others to recast Graham as a stalwart crusader for MAGA. The truth is more complicated. After Donald Trump's stunning victory in the 2024 election, Democrats had to stop and ask what went wrong. One conclusion from the commentary class was that progressives had a serious man problem, and for once they were right. Democrats had made contempt for men, especially young white men, central to their message, and that came with a cost. Any white man who remained on the left had to accept that he was either uniquely guilty or expected to participate in his own dispossession. The party even launched a $20 million effort to discover why men were abandoning it, only to arrive at the familiar conclusion that men were simply bad and deserved what they got. This should have created a golden opportunity for the GOP to secure the loyalty of young men for a generation. Instead, conservatives are setting that opportunity on fire.
