The National Conservatism movement has quickly become an influential force in American politics, but it now finds itself at an interesting crossroads. Power always seeks to expand. It never halts for principles or words on paper; it halts only for rival powers strong enough to resist it. Those rivals must have deep roots, independent resilience, and the ability to demand loyalty. They must project sovereignty in ways the state cannot easily replicate, establishing spheres of influence that can resist government overreach without ever firing a shot. During a press gaggle this week, President Trump casually announced that the United States would allow 600,000 Chinese nationals to enter the country as college students. He has long focused on improving relations with China, but the idea of importing and educating such numbers runs against the America First instincts of his voters. When Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick was asked why these students were so important, he admitted that many U.S. universities would go out of business without foreign enrollment. For the Right, that sounds less like a warning and more like a promise. Ending large-scale immigration from a rival power while letting bankrupt institutions fail should be an easy win. President Trump announced on Monday that he would be exercising his authority to federalize control of law enforcement in Washington, D.C. At a recent Panamerican Congress in Mexico City, Democratic Rep. Delia Ramirez of Illinois stood before attendees and declared in Spanish, “I'm a proud Guatemalan before I'm an American.” Ramirez, who sits on the House Homeland Security Committee, helps shape policies vital to the nation's safety. Yet she openly and proudly identifies with another country — and in a foreign language, no less. Ramirez isn't alone. She's part of a growing class of politicians who treat their American citizenship as a formality. Many are first-generation immigrants. Ramirez isn't even that. Last week, Logan Riley and Brandon Mitchell went viral when the gay couple shared a post of the baby boy they had acquired through surrogacy. It has become very common for gay couples to celebrate purchasing children from their mothers on social media, but as the horrific consequences of surrogacy have become more well-known, public opposition has become more common. Many on social media raised concerns that the gay adoption was not in the interest of the child, who may experience severe consequences for not being raised by a mother. These reasonable concerns were meant with the usual accusations of bigotry by gay activists seeking to silence the opposition. The activists who viciously smeared any critics of the gay couple fell silent when it was revealed that one of the new “fathers” is a convicted sex offender. From the minute Donald Trump came down the golden escalator, the Republican establishment has hated his guts. In the 2016 primary, the brash New York billionaire was treated by mainstream GOP leaders and commentators as a joke responsible for degrading the political process. As the real estate tycoon gained momentum, establishment figures had two choices: Declare yourself "never Trump" or pretend to have seen the light. Many fled to organizations like the Bulwark or the Lincoln Project, but others stayed around waiting for their moment to recapture the Republican Party from the MAGA populists. Now that Trump has come to define the GOP, the establishment figures who loathed him from the beginning have a new strategy. If you can't beat MAGA, co-opt the movement. Earlier this week, Charlie Kirk reported that President Trump was facing significant pressure from the GOP donor class to strike a bipartisan deal that would provide amnesty to illegal aliens working in agriculture and hospitality. Establishment Republicans have always hated Trump, and the fact that his supporters have demanded true border security and immigration enforcement has played a major role in that animosity. For most of human history, scarcity was the enemy. Be it territory, land, wealth, calories, or energy, the majority of conflict and technological innovation was driven by the fact that resources were scarce. With the incredible explosion in scientific knowledge and technological advancement over the last few hundred years, the dynamic has shifted. Scarcity has not vanished across the globe, but in the wealthier and more advanced portions of the world, many of the critical material deficiencies have seen significant relief. The problem that many affluent nations now face is that the artificial solutions they developed to alleviate scarcity have proven just as dangerous as the scarcity itself, if not more dangerous. For most of our history, humans have been selected for their ability to alleviate or survive scarcity. Now they are being selected for their ability to survive the dangers of artificial abundance.
