After over 100 days in the job, South Africa's Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has been praised for “really taking on the senior management of the police” instead of attending funerals and saying “outrageous things” like his very unpopular predecessor Bheki Cele. His good report card comes from civil rights organisation Action Society's Juanita Du Preez. However, she is not handing out any stars to Justice and Constitutional Minister Thembi Simelane, who is also fighting corruption allegations. Du Preez says that cases are staying on the court role for even longer now. She also comments on some of the shock findings in the Auditor General's latest report on the South African Police Force. Among these is that it takes between eight and 35 minutes for the 10111 number to be answered - if it is answered at all. She further laments the exodus from the police of experienced detectives who cannot possibly manage loads of between 300 and 400 cases each.
Action Society, the former home of crime fighter Ian Cameron, who is now the Chair of the Portfolio Committee on Police in Parliament, is continuing its fight for justice for victims and their families. In this interview with spokesperson Juanita du Preez, she describes how former Police Minister Bheki Cele was an “obstacle” in the fight against crime. Discussing the official crime statistics for between April and June this year when 6 228 people were murdered, she says “…we often say that it's a war zone or a bloodbath and we keep coming back to those. We are suffering to find new synonyms for that, but it is appropriate… I think the legacy of Cele, unfortunately, we will still see for quite a while.” However, the new Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu, “does seem like a better fit”. Du Preez lists the urgent reforms needed not just in law enforcement, but in the justice- and parole systems as well. Praising new Correctional Services Minister Pieter Groenewald for the measures he is taking, she says currently “40% of people out on parole just go out and re-offend…not just stealing an apple or something like that: serious crimes: murder, rape, sexual offenses…It's just a pause before they can commit the next crime.” Meanwhile, she hails Cameron for bringing “urgency” to his new role.
Newly-appointed Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu says he is aware of the high crime rate in the country. Mchunu is taking over from former police minister Bheki Cele. He says ready for the job and wants to tackle some key priority challenges facing South Africa, such as high rates of murder, rape, and hijacking amongst others. Meanwhile... The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) says firearm crime and policing policy should top new SA police minister's agenda. ISS says South Africa's police service needs renewal and clear direction, and it is ready to assist Mchunu. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Consultant and Independent Researcher with the Institute of Security Studies (ISS), David Bruce

Minister of Police, Bheki Cele addresses areas of concern ahead of SONA 2024 by Radio Islam
In a typically hard hitting interview, Ian Cameron of Action Society describes South Africa as a "total bloodbath" and a "slaughterhouse of humans," referencing the data on escalations in murders since the ANC came to power in 1994. He criticises the government's detached attitude towards soaring crime rates, likening ministers and police commissioners to passive spectators of a violent sport. Cameron attributes police inefficiency to political interference and the influence of the "untouchable" police chief Bheki Cele. He accuses the ANC of ignoring internal issues while pursuing international justice, neglecting the alarming rates of murder, and the unprecedented rape of women and children in South Africa. Cameron suggests the ANC's reluctance to reform the police stems from fear of exposing their own corruption. - Chris Steyn

Based on an essay I recently wrote ( https://www.timeslive.co.za/sunday-times-daily/opinion-and-analysis/2022-08-02-eusebius-mckaiser-outrage-about-rape-must-be-accompanied-by-action-heres-what-we-might-do/?device=feature_phone ) about rape culture, in response to the gang-rapes that had happened in Krugersdorp here in South Africa, I narrate the content of my essay. It focused on several aspects of our responses to incidents of rape when they are reported: a) an inappropriate grading of rape and murder, as if some rape stories are more "rage-worthy" than others - I explain why this is problematic ; b) the callous response of our minister of police, Bheki Cele, who implied that one woman was "lucky" to be raped by one man rather than by more than one man- I offer analysis of why this is problematic c) the proposal of chemical castration that has been raised by some in the ANC is a tempting "solution" to rape but won't work, and I explain in detail why it will not work.I end the podcast with a reflection on the hard work required to deal with the deeper social structures and factors that sustain a culture that licences rape. | ReplyForward

Police minister Bheki Cele shouted at some guy called Ian Cameron (from an outfit called Action Society) at a community safety event in Gugulethu, Cape Town. It is one of the most horrendous acts of public bullying from a politician I have seen. In this edition of In The Ring With Eusebius McKaiser I analyse the issues: what might have triggered the minister's response? Is there any explanation for his shouting? How should we (properly) characterise it? Are there factors that should make us soften our judgement of the minister? What, too, of Cameron? Ought he to have engaged the minister, in turn, differently to how he in fact did? Or not? These are just some of the issues I explore.PLEASE do not forget to subscribe to the podcast before you exit your podcast platform.
