As the battle raged between the U.S. Marshals and the Doolin-Dalton Gang, Tilghman narrowly missed a legendary – but tragic – shootout between the two sides. He worked with the Earp brothers and the Masterson brothers, and occasionally, Doc Holliday. Buffalo Days, Legends of Dodge City, is about outfits of buffalo runners who traveled in and out of the Arkansas River Valley from 1870 to 1872. The book is a collection of individual stories of how men became legends of their experiences, founded at times by luck, but mostly on their skills to survive. These are the stories of personal legends established out of solid character and the will to endure, making them unique to American lore. Here are the hunters such as Charles Rath, Josiah Wright Mooar, Jim White, Thomas Nixon, HooDoo Brown, Bill Tilghman, and Billy Dixon. Many of the stories captivate the adventure, excitement, and experience of the Old West, tell the facts behind the individuals who were the founders of Dodge City and the events for which they participated in a less dramatized way. It is also the story of the greatest slaughter of any animal history: the great Bison herds of America. To purchase the book go to: Buffalo Days (See Video Trailer Here)

The purpose of this podcast is to tell the story of Bill Tilghman, and his Buffalo Days. Tilghman was among the first white men to locate a buffalo hunting camp on the extreme southwestern border of Barbour County, Kansas. The camp was only a few miles north of the boundary line between Kansas and the Indian Territory. An Indian uprising lasting more than a year had been put down the year previous by General Custer, and, as a natural consequence, the Indians who had taken part in the uprising entertained for the white man anything but a friendly feeling.  Billy Tilghman, like the others in that country at the time, became a buffalo hunter and was working along nicely until the Indians got after him. The following story is based on an article written by Bat Master from chapter 4 of his book entitled Famous Gunfighters of the Western Frontier.

Tonight, my special guest is author and historian Chris Enss who's here to discuss the Wild West and what was considered to be the greatest possse of all time. Future legends of the Old West, Charlie Bassett, Bat Masterson, Wyatt Earp, and Bill Tilghman were the lawmen who patrolled the unruly streets. When a cattle baron's son fled town after the shooting of the popular saloon singer named Dora Hand, the four men--all experts with a gun who knew the harsh, desertlike surrounding terrain--hunted him down like "Thunder Over the Prairie." The posse's ride across the desolate landscape to seek justice influenced the men's friendship, their careers, and their feelings about the justice system. This account of that event is a fast-paced, cinematic glimpse into the Old West that was. Want more paranormal episodes? DARBY HINTON is a native of Los Angeles. He was born in Santa Monica, California. He made his acting debut at the age of 6 months old in the arms of Jayne Mansfield in the TV show “Playhouse 90”. He went on to appear in numerous features and television shows, until the day his mother dropped him off at Twentieth Century Fox, (dressed in knee high socks and a lederhosen), to audition for a role in “The Sound Of Music”. Darby got lost and wandered into the wrong line of kids, by the time his mother found him he had turned in his lederhosen for a coon skin cap, and ended up playing Fess Parker’s son “Israel Boone” on the “Daniel Boone Show” for the next six years. While in recent years it seems to be in vogue for child actors to talk about their early acting years as ones of pain and abuse, Darby looks back on his life with fun and excitement. “It gave me the opportunity to travel the world and meet some of the most interesting people in it”. In fact Darby likes to travel so much that after finishing high school in Lugano Switzerland, he took three academic around-the-world voyages aboard the S.S. Universe. He went on to study under Jacque & Philippe Cousteau and almost gave up his acting career to become a marine biologist, however, once you start a career in Jayne Mansfield arms it is hard to give up that kind of work. Besides acting gave Darby the kind of freedom that he loved to explore his other passions like flying, skydiving, and martial arts. After meeting Bruce Lee, who at the time was playing Kato on the ‘Green Hornet’ series, Darby got very interested in martial Arts. He traveled to Hong Kong to see where Bruce first studied. He even got the opportunity to study under William Chung The World’s Grand Master of Wing Chung and the man who taught Bruce. He then spent a couple of years playing “Ian Griffith”, the probation officer that turned into the Salem rapist, on “Days Of Our Lives” The most recent chapter in Darby’s life revolves around human development. After meeting and working with the master of motivation, Tony Robbins, Darby realized his life’s work as an actor had been trying to figure out why people do what they do. He eventually became a master trainer for Tony Robbins taking a number of years off doing seminars all around the US including Hawaii and even in Fiji. Darby then sought out other Masters in the world of human development to study with, like Wayne Dryer, Julia Cameron, and Jim Rohn. Darby has been a proud member of the ‘SAG/AFTRA Young Performers Committee’, an active member of ‘A Minor Consideration’ and on the Advisory Committee to ‘Looking Ahead’. All geared to helping the creative youth of today experience the best of life while helping them avoid the pitfalls that have plagued young artists of the past and present. Still, acting is what Darby loves to do. For a much more complete list of his current project check out IMDB.com and be on the look out for him in ‘Bill Tilghman and The Outlaws’ opening in February. In most of the county-seat wars the fighting, that is the real killing, commenced before, at, or immediately after, the alleged election, but in the case of Gray County, the bloody finale was postponed for more than a year. There was a growing disposition to depend more on courts to settle the controversies and rather less on guns in the hands of hired killers. So the tragedy was delayed while motions for rehearings were filed and argued. In this case, Cimarron had the advantage of possession; the docket of the Supreme Court was crowded with more business than the three judges could dispose of promptly, and Cimarron was taking advantage of this delay. Meantime, the Ingall's crowd had captured most of the county offices, among them the coveted office of sheriff, and the bolder spirits decided that it was time to quit fooling with their rival and take the law in their own hands. This is the story of an attempt to remove the remaining records from the Cimarron county clerks office on the morning of January 12, 1889. The Gray County Seat War

One of the last of the county-seat wars was that of Cimarron vs. Ingalls. The stories of the different county-seat wars that marked the history of the development of western Kansas differed each from the other, but there was one point of resemblance common to them all. All of them were distinguished by a disregard of honor and a willingness on the part of both parties to the contest to violating every civil and moral law in order to win. The county-seat war in Gray County did not differ in that respect from the others, but it had wider ramifications and elements of almost-romance that distinguished it from all the rest. This story produced by Mike King and narrated by Brad Smalley are the events leading up to the Battle of Cimarron.
