With Anzac Day just around the corner, Born to Watch honours a defining moment in Australian cinema with our Gallipoli (1981) Movie Review. Directed by Peter Weir and starring a young, raw Mel Gibson alongside Mark Lee, this film is more than a war story, it's a devastating portrait of friendship, sacrifice, and the tragic cost of blind patriotism. In this episode, Whitey and G-Man revisit the classic through a lens shaped by age, memory, and national identity. From the iconic opening scenes of sprinting through the outback to the haunting stillness of the battlefield at the Neck, Gallipoli strips away the glory of war and lays bare its cruel realities. The boys waste no time diving into the emotional core of the film, mateship. Whitey and G-Man see themselves in Frank and Archie, and they hilariously debate who's who. Is Whitey the cynical Frank, or is G-Man secretly more Archie than he'll admit? But it's not just about comparisons and callbacks to high school Anzac ceremonies. This is Born to Watch at its most reflective and reverent. The guys dig into the cultural significance of Gallipoli, how the film shaped their understanding of the Anzac legacy, and why it's essential viewing for every Australian. It's also a rare episode where the crew admits that this one is hard to joke about. Except, of course, when it comes to figuring out which of their mates is most like Snowy. They talk about how Gallipoli taught them what Anzac Day should mean. Not just a day off to play two-up and hit the pub, but a moment to remember real sacrifice. The 1981 film still hits hard, they argue, because it doesn't sugarcoat the futility of war. And when that final freeze frame lands, it guts you, every time. There's admiration for director Peter Weir, whose resume includes Dead Poets Society, The Truman Show, and Master and Commander. But here, he's in peak form. Gallipoli's scale is intimate but never small; its visuals are sweeping, yet grounded in the personal. And the music? That synth track when Archie sprints across the desert? Still gives the boys goosebumps. The episode gets personal, too. Both hosts recall trying (and failing) to get their teenage kids to watch the film. They revisit childhood memories of Anzac Day school assemblies, the eerie power of “Only 19” and “Waltzing Matilda,” and the VHS that left a permanent mark. G-Man shares stories from his own pilgrimage to Gallipoli, visiting Lone Pine and The Nek and seeing firsthand the terrain that made the battle a bloodbath. As always, there's room for laughs, the mystery of Mark Lee's post-Gallipoli career, and whether it's safe to train for battle with live rounds (spoiler: probably not). But the tone stays grounded, respectful, and proud. They wrap things up with “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly,” highlighting Gallipoli's haunting silence, its unwavering focus on mateship, and its place in Australian cinematic history. It's not just a war film; it's a rite of passage.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!Join the conversation:Does Gallipoli still define the Anzac spirit? Is this Mel Gibson's best early performance?Have you visited the battlefield yourself?Drop us a voicemail at BornToWatch.com.au and be part of the show!#Gallipoli1981 #BornToWatch #GallipoliMovieReview #AnzacDay #PeterWeir #MelGibson #AustralianCinema #WarMovies #MoviePodcast #LestWeForget

New supporter Gareth has chosen a cult classic comedy horror movie this week with 1990's Tremors. Tremors was a collaborative effort between director Ron Underwood, producer Gail Katz, and writers S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, who crafted a unique blend of science fiction, horror, and comedy. Filming took place primarily in the arid landscapes of the California desert, specifically in the small town of Lone Pine, which provided the perfect backdrop for the film's fictional setting of Perfection, Nevada. The production team faced the challenge of creating realistic, underground monsters known as Graboids, which required innovative practical effects. The creature designs were brought to life by the visual effects team led by Amalgamated Dynamics, who used a combination of animatronics and puppetry to create the menacing and memorable Graboids. Despite a modest budget, Tremors benefited from a talented cast that included Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, and Reba McEntire, whose performances helped elevate the film's quirky humor and charm. The filmmakers strived to balance suspenseful moments with comedic relief, making the movie appealing to a wide audience. Upon its release, Tremors received positive reviews for its clever writing, engaging characters, and practical effects, which set it apart from typical creature features of the era. Though initially modest in box office success, it garnered a strong cult following over the years, leading to several sequels and solidifying its status as a beloved classic in the genre. As local handymen Val and Earl team up with a motley crew of townsfolk, including a seismologist and a survivalist couple, they must band together to outsmart and survive these deadly creatures determined to eliminate anyone who ventures above ground. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thevhsstrikesback/support

In the midst of a lowland forest at the edge of town, out for a slow walk with a pal, we heard the calls of Cedar Waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) and started looking for them. We saw them first in an Eastern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) tree, as they were quickly making their way towards the South. Then when we turned a corner we got to witness some courting behaviours which somehow reached deep and woke me from a slow low mood I was in. Sometimes Cedar Waxwings are regarded as a “just a..” bird. “It's just a Cedar Waxwing”, you might hear from another birder who is looking for some elusive flycatcher or late migrant. But if we take the time to pay attention to the mundane, we sometimes see some magic in elusive or even commonplace behaviours. Finding the magic in the everyday is one of the beautiful parts of paying attention to our wild neighbours. The small moves sometimes mean the most. These small moves are what inspired this week's show. Image of Waxwings : Alan Rice, CC BY-SA 4.0, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0, via Wikimedia Commons. When your dad's the most successful Treeing Walker breeder in recent history with major money wins, World Championships and Hall of Fame inductions at every turn, it would appear that sharing the big stage, the limelight if you will, would be a long time coming in the shadow of dad Randy's success. When you have the attitude, work ethic and the respect for the game of a seventeen-year old Troy Smith, being recognized for your own achievements seems as natural as summer rain.In this episode, Steve heads up to western Pennsylvania to hunt with Troy and Randy and to record Troy's story. The trip entailed two nights of hunting with a pair of Lone Pine yearlings, Lone Pine Phara at seventeen months and Lone Pine Phalse Profit at fourteen months. A total of nine raccoons were seen on as many trees on the two-night hunt. The second night was a short one as Steve respected the early departure time for his homebound flight. This recording is worth your time for a number of reasons, especially if there are young hunters in your family or circle of friends. It presents the opportunity to view the sport and what it holds for young ones that indeed will inherit it and carry it forward. Refreshing is the word that comes to mind.

On this episode of the California Now Podcast, host Soterios Johnson explores the endless allure of Inyo County and the Eastern Sierra with four in-the-know locals. First up, Johnson talks with Brent Underwood, owner of Cerro Gordo, a former Gold Rush–era boomtown and mining operation nestled in the Inyo Mountains. Underwood starts off by sharing the thrills and daily struggles of living in a ghost town. “It's a lot of learning on the fly,” he says. “It's a lot of stressful days and logistical challenges, but I love it. It's probably the most interesting and fulfilling thing that I've ever done.” The entrepreneur dives into the town's history, his plans for reviving the property, and how visitors can explore Cerro Gordo for themselves. Next, Johnson is joined by Bob Sigman, executive director of the Museum of Western Film History in Lone Pine. Sigman shares his insights into the rich Hollywood heritage of the Eastern Sierra region and what made Lone Pine in particular a filming hot spot for Western films. As Sigman explains, “The sun going from east to west over Owens Valley provided just a unique opportunity for filmmakers, not only to have the landscape, but to have variable light, whether they were shooting northeast, south, or west.” He also discusses the Lone Pine Film Festival's evolution, popular exhibits, and how to experience the cinematic landscape of Inyo County in person. Lastly, Johnson talks to Brittany and Dave Holman, the husband-and-wife team behind Owens Valley Distilling Company in Bishop. The two share how the area's magnificent rock climbing initially drew them to the area 17 years ago. “Bishop is literally a climbing mecca now,” Dave says. “I mean, you talk to any rock climber around the world, they will know Bishop, California.” The Holmans discuss the distillery's origins, including the secret to their locally made spirits. The avid outdoor enthusiasts also give tips for enjoying Bishop's epic surroundings. “If you love the outdoors, regardless of what your fitness level is—if you're just a car tourist trying to see some beautiful things or you're a hardcore athlete—there's just so much to do in this town,” Dave boasts. “It's incredible.”
There are some foundational values here at The High Route. Right at the top of the list is inspiring backcountry travelers to dream big adventures, and when the time is right, go out and have that adventure. Adventure has gradients, and this might seem like a tangent, but it's worthwhile—there was a 94-year-old at the climbing gym this afternoon. He's a regular. And it certainly looked like he was owning his adventure pulling plastic. So, there is time to learn, get fit, and push the comfort zone just enough to make something happen. This is all in the spirit of today's podcast, where we speak with some fine folks about their experiences on the Redline Traverse in California's Sierras. IFMGA guide Jed Porter completed the Redline in 2017, primarily solo. Spencer Dillon, a law student at the University of Utah, and his partner Matt Skorina maximized the gift of a deep Sierra snowpack to complete their iteration of the Redline in the spring of 2023. As far as high Sierra ski traverses go, the Redline is mythical. The route was first completed in the early 80s by Allan Bard, Tom Carter, and Chris Cox. Several others assisted the endeavor along the way, but Bard, Carter, and Cox had the vision and the moxy to see it through. Traversing south to north, the Redline begins near Whitney Portal outside Lone Pine, California, and terminates at Mammoth. The intent was to stay as high as possible and ski excellent lines. But all this was in the 80s—a time when even military use of GPS was a decade off. In a trip report on his Redline experience, Porter wrote, "Carter and Bard, in the November 1983 issue of Powder magazine, map out the line with the poetry of vision rather than the prose of prescription." That is to say, a point by point, pass to pass, couloir to couloir rendering of the original route isn't, as far as we can tell, publically available. And we're sticking with an originalist interpretation, following Bard's and Carter's and Cox's lead; the route description in this podcast will remain vague. As noted, the intent is to inspire others to go have an adventure. The high Sierra is a vast expanse—the perfect place, when the snow conditions, the fitness, the gear, and a partnership align, to make a go of it. We chat all things Redline with Porter and Dillon from snow to gear to visioning and style. You can learn more about Jed Porter here, and find his Redline Traverse gear list here. You can read Spencer Dillon's story about his trip here, on the Skimo Co blog. Thanks for listening. You can find us at the-high-route.com. Yeah, there are two hyphens for redundancy, which is a good policy in the mountains. For weight weenies, hyphens weigh next to nothing. We are a reader supported website with free podcasts. Our podcasts are not free to produce or store on a server. If you are enjoying the podcasts, please consider supporting The High Route, you can find subscription information here. The theme music for The High Route Podcast comes from Storms in the Hill Country and the album The Self Transforming (Thank you, Jens Langsjoen). You can find a link to the album here—there are so many good songs on this album. In this episode we journey to western Pennsylvania to pick the brain of master coonhound breeder Randy Smith of Lone Pine Kennels. Smith has been a guest before but this episode dives deeper into the whys and how's of one of the nation's most successful coonhound breeding programs.Smith has built his breeding program on a nine to ten-generation, female-centered Lone Pine line-breeding effort. Using his females, he reaches out to tap a vast network of stud dogs that have been evaluated according to his standards. Smith discusses the criteria he uses in making the all-important decisions that result in his obvious success. Steve asks Smith why and how he comes to choose popular studs like Bone Collector, Coma's Stylish Legend, All Grand Track Man and several others to augment his years of work with the Lone Pine females. This episode will be most appealing to those that either want to breed coonhounds successfully or are simply intrigued by hearing how Smith has chosen the right pieces to create a masterful program that is producing results for pleasure and competition hunters alike throughout the coonhound word. As Steve's dad Homon Fielder, the houndsman, would have said, “This one is a good'un.” Randy Smith may be reached by phone at 724-525-1892.

Smith joins the boys at his Lone Pine Kennels guest quarters where the trio participate in a laidback conversation about family, friends and of course, those world-famous Lone Pine Treeing Walkers.Smith's “Lone Pine” resume reads like the win record for Kentucky's Calumet Farms or, to keep it local, the six-time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers. Smith's hounds had a breakout year in money-hunt competition in 2023, with Lone Pine Lady and Lone Pine Bella respectively, winning a truck and a first-place finish worth $100 grand. Both occupy prominent spots in the conversation. This is a coon hunter's episode with all the elements that push the hot buttons of hunters of all persuasions; pleasure hunting, competition and breeding to name a few. With coon seasons in full swing and autumn woods ablaze, you can't get much closer to our favorite sport at our favorite time of year than with this conversation. It's a plumb good' un!

During World War II, over 120,000 Japanese Americans, most of whom were US citizens, were forcibly removed from their homes in California, Washington, and Oregon, and imprisoned in relocation centers, small towns surrounded by barbed wire and armed guards. The War Relocation Authority, the government agency created by FDR that oversaw the mass relocation and internment, appointed a project attorney for each of the 10 camps. These white attorneys served the conflicted position of both advising the project director and running a legal aid for the Japanese American prisoners. Joining me in this episode is legal historian Eric L. Muller, the Dan K. This week's guest on Perpetual Chess is U.S. Chess Hall of Famer, IM James Sherwin. An 89-year-old New York City Native, Sherwin has played and met many chess legends. He knew Bobby Fischer from his teenage years. Jim did not pursue chess professionally and had a successful career as an attorney and a corporate executive, but he still managed to compete extensively and participated in 8 US Championships, often finishing near the top of the standings. Sherwin now lives in the London area, and as recently as three years ago, was still winning chess tournaments! After talking to him, I can see why he is still able to perform so well, because James' memory of his games and encounters with Fischer, Petrosian, Tal, Reshevsky, and many others was truly dazzling. Steve invites Kesten Jessee to recap a recent trip to Lone Pine Kennels in western Pennsylvania instigated by Kesten's good fortune in being the winner of a Lone Pine produced male puppy sired by popular stud dog, Davis' Rosedale Phrogger. This was Jessee's first hunt with Mr. Lone Pine himself, Randy Smith. He is currently hunting two Lone Pine-bred hounds and had lots of interest in and enthusiasm for the trip.Jessee recaps two nights of hunting with nine individual Treeing Walkers, all females, and has perfect recall of the events. A highlight of the hunt was watching 2016 UKC World Champion Lone Pine Biffy Sue tree a Keystone coon after a four-and-a-half -year sabbatical. YouTube producer Clayton Stark filmed the two nights of hunting for an upcoming Stark Outdoors production which will air soon.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are once again joined by Patricia Cameron. We catch up on all that she's been up to since our last interview, including a NOLS mountaineering leadership course in Alaska, a 2022 LASH on the PCT, and a hiker trash prom hosted by her organization, Blackpackers. Patricia also shares a distressing story of her being the victim of a hate crime during her PCT hike in Lone Pine, California, in which she caught the entire encounter on video. We play the audio from this incident, get Patricia's take on exactly what went down, some of her thoughts on the risk and reception of being a hiker of color through these rural towns, and despite this incident, why she has no plans to stop long-distance backpacking anytime soon. A warning to listeners that the audio from this video is triggering, but I do believe that it's important for everyone in the community to hear this and get a sense of the depressing reality that still persists for many of our fellow hikers. We wrap the show with a few reasons why a flip-flop thru-hike might be the way to go on the AT, a triple crown of non-dog pets, a superb listener poop story, and more.
