He then returned to Howard University serving as associate general counsel and directing the Moot Court Team at the School of Law. During his more than thirty years in the education industry Leroy has worked as arbitrator, lawyer, professor, administrator, programmer and consultant. He has worked with colleges in nine states and high schools in more than forty cities. Leroy has served as the General Counsel for the DC Chapter of Concerned Black Men, Inc.; Treasurer, Dianne Princess of Wales Memorial Fund (US), Board member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges; Education Transition committee of Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly and Board Member Stride: The Wright Foundation for Female Athletes. During his thirty years in education Leroy has worked to address underrepresentation of people of color and women in STEM. He advises the Percy Julian Institute Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine program of the Daniel Alexander Payne Community Development Corporation working with middle school students. At the Black Student Fund he created BSF STEM and gaming develop program teaching kids how to code. He is married to Dr. Debony Hughes and has two daughters Nina and Malayna. Military service members are often the best people to serve in office or work political reform. It's hardwired into us not to sit idly by when we see injustice, making us a powerful coalition when we take on institutional reform. My next guest dedicates his time to this as his chosen calling. He is on a mission to fix what he calls a dysfunctional political system.Mike Cantwell is currently the Virginia Task Force Lead for Veterans for All Voters and was the Vice President for FairVote Virginia and the DC Chapter leader for Unite America. Mike is also the President of the Yorktown Civic Association and is active with his local VFW Post and Alumni Association. In 2021, Mike ran as an Independent for the Arlington County Board and earlier this year, Mike launched Independents for America. Mike recently retired from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). From 2010 to 2023, Mike served as a Collaboration Branch Chief, a Strategy Manager, a Partner Engagement Office, a Program Manager for an Agency-wide initiative, and as a Branch Chief in the Maritime Safety Office. From 2004 to 2010, Mike worked for Booz Allen and CACI and supported federal government clients such as NGA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and the Navy. Mike spent over 28 years in the Navy and Navy Reserves. He was recalled to Active Duty after the terrorist attacks on the Pentagon in 2001 and served as a Watch Office in the Navy Operations Center until he was released from Active Duty in 2023. Mike retired as a Commander in 2015. Mike Cantwell is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy and earned a Master's degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College and a Master's degree in Business Administration from George Washington University. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, Mike served as the Damage Control Assistant and Deck Division Officer onboard the USS Luce (DDG 38). “I don't think that [the Metaverse] is going to be a replacement for seeing people in real life. I think it's actually going to be a significant extension of what we can do in real life and how we can meet people." On this episode of HYPERSCALE, I am joined by Sophia Moshasha, Vice President of the DC Chapter of the VR/AR Association, co-founder of XR women, and a producer and host of The Polys - WebXR Awards, who since 2017 has been actively engaged in the immersive technology community and a field expert consulted by leading media platforms. Over the years, Sophia has played a vital role in guiding policy and standard-setting organizations like the VR/AR Association, Congressional Reality Caucus, Metaverse Standards Forum, and the National Training and Simulation Association. Her efforts equip these entities to comprehend the immersive technology landscape, ensuring they are well-equipped to meet the burgeoning interest in adopting these technologies. Immersive reality is a massive opportunity, but to truly leverage it, content will need to be at the forefront. As Sophia explains, XR will need to go beyond gaming.  "We need these killer applications that will make people's lives easier." Part of the solution lies in defining these different realities. After all, the ‘metaverse' might not be the catch-all term we think it is. The Business of Meetings – Episode 163 - The Future of Work with Joe Mechlinski We are delighted to speak with Joe Mechlinski today! Joe Mechlinski is the Founder and CEO of SHIFT, New York Times bestselling author, and a TEDx speaker, who wants to change how we work to transform the way we live. At SHIFT, a tech-enabled management consulting firm nationally recognized as a ‘Best Workplace,' Joe helps leaders build healthy and high-performing organizations by disrupting outdated norms, building engaged teams, and using technology to unlock human potential. Passionate about equity in the workplace, Joe is a partner at Conscious Venture Partners: a group that invests in minority and female-founded businesses. Joe's journey Joe grew up in difficult circumstances in the inner city of Baltimore. With the help of some wonderful people who stepped into his life and gave him a hand, he was able to attend Johns Hopkins University, even though he came from an academically-challenged environment. He became an entrepreneur and started some small businesses that did well in the late 1990s. Joe lost his mom after he left college and experienced some personal challenges. At 23, he started SHIFT with a partner who had a lot of experience and began doing management consulting for companies. He used the idea of learning and development to put himself and his partner in situations where they had to figure things out and find a way. He read tons of books, attended conferences, and had some smart mentors to help him think through how to help businesses grow. After twelve years, he wrote a book about all he had learned. It became a New York Times bestseller and the number-one book in the world for three days! Then Joe started working with bigger companies, and his small management consulting company got to work with companies like John Hancock, New Balance, and Crocs at the executive level. That allowed Joe to get involved in a VC firm and start thinking of ways to help others. The best play for organizations The traffic patterns in organizations have changed since the pandemic. Right now, the best play for organizations is to figure out what makes sense for their model based on the labor market for their business and mentor the next generation. Companies should also get creative about building environments where people know they are seen, heard, and understood and feel that their team and the organization have their back. Leadership Leaders must be clear about where they want to go and what is most important to them in order to lead organizations effectively. Employees To retain employees, organizations need to look at the average tenure in their marketplace and try to meet or exceed that with their allocation of capital and available resources. They can also offer incentives. How to rise within an organization Generally, people tend to rise within an organization through learning. Whether it involves consuming content and applying it from a book perspective or learning from platforms like LinkedIn Learning, people should spend between ten and twenty percent of each week investing in themselves, their learning, and their development. TEDx When TEDx came out in 2008, Joe applied immediately and put it behind him. (He has made his audition tape available on YouTube.) Sometime later, he got a call from one of the curators in the DC Chapter looking for someone to speak about the future of work. So he began the process. He would usually ask questions and then listen carefully to the responses from the audience. However, that is not how TEDx works. Their talk process requires speakers to stick to a script. It was hard for him, so he got a speaker coach. Why the TEDx Talk was difficult for Joe Doing the TEDx talk was hard for Joe because he struggled to say everything within fourteen minutes. He was also writing a new book entitled, Who Says, which was not intended to give advice but rather to invite sovereignty, curiosity, and questioning, and the point of it is to explain why we should stop looking for answers from “the sage on the stage”. Joe believes his talk was one of the first TEDx talks that did not give advice. It was ranked the number one talk worldwide in August last year and ranked 40th out of 15,900 TEDx talks globally! It took a lot of work, and Joe is happy it turned out the way it did!  The Tony Hsieh Award Joe volunteers to be part of the Tony Hsieh Award delegation. It is a delegation established to honor the work and legacy of Tony Hsieh, the late Founder, and CEO of Zappos. He is excited to continue being part of that community and to have the opportunity to enlist others to do the same! DC co-bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran revealed plans for an interconnected universe for the comic book giant. The plan, titled Chapter One: “Gods and Monsters” and lasting from 2025 to 2027, includes five movies, an animated series, and several TV series for HBO Max. The plan is to use well-known characters like Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman to prop up lesser-known characters and to cast anew.
