In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, we are joined by Daniel White, known on trail as The Blackalachian.  We learn all about The Blackalachian's life before he became a full-time adventurer, including his days as a rapper and his time in prison, how thru-hiking was put on his map, his experiences with racism on the AT, his thru-bike of the Underground Railroad Route, His hikes of The Great Outdoors Challenge in Scotland and Camino del Norte in Spain, and what the future has in store for him.  This conversation is both heavy and hilarious, informative and fun; we hope you enjoy it as much as we did. We wrap up the show with the Triple Crown of Summer Wins, we learn what a thunderbox is, a fan indulges my undying love for the 90s Bulls, and we have a Backcountry Matchmaking.  This one has it all.   [divider] Backcountry.com discount code: Use code: Backpacker15 to save 15% on your first purchase from Backcountry.com/backpackerradio Zpacks discount code:Use code: HEXAMIDBPR for $25 discount at Zpacks.com [divider] The Trek's Pledge to Do Better BACKPACKER RADIO MERCH Interview with Daniel White "The Blackalachian" YouTube Instagram QOTD: Is wearing a t-shirt with your podcast’s name on it the same as being in a band and wearing your own band t-shirt? Episode 4 has Shanty sitting down with Blue Ridge Outdoors 2020 Hiker of the Year, Daniel White. Known as "The Blackalachian" in the outdoor community, White tackled his first thru-hike in 2017 when he turned to the Appalachian Trail to get away from a bad break up and burn out at his job. In this episode, White recounts the ups and downs of his AT completion, opening up about a racist encounter at his camp near the Mason-Dixon line on the AT. He also takes us through his "powerful" ride on the Underground Railroad Trail and his trips to Europe last year, where he hiked across Scotland and completed the Camino Del Norte in Spain. Fueled by both adversity and kindness from the people he met along the way, White’s drive for solo adventure shines through in this interview.

Daniel White is something of a rarity on the Appalachian Trail. Black people are unrepresented on hiking trails and Daniel provides us with, perhaps, some of the unhappy reasons for that underrepresentation. He hiked in 2017 and found the trail to be an unexpected source of love and light. Daniel and Steve discuss what it feels like for a young black man to "go into the woods" and Daniel has a few stories to share that would be unlikely to be part of a white man's experience. As with most hikers, the trail was transformative for him and he has plans for further adventures. You can find out more about Daniel and connect with him on Facebook and Instagram at The Blackalachian. His YouTube channel can also be found at The Blackalachian.  Sue Jeffery (Steve mistakenly refers to her as "Jefferies") has a wonderful tale about the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail. Sue and her three youngest children hiked the entire 319 miles of the trail in June 2017. Her photo journal is highly recommended and can be found here. https://spark.adobe.com/page/GS0DpO1Z0ibhO/ Additionally, the Sheltowee Trace Association Facebook page is an excellent resource for more information and pictures of the trail. Week two of Appalachian Trail adventures on the Like a Bigfoot Podcast!! This week we are joined by Matt Marrero, trail name "Mojo", a southbound hiker who recently completed his journey on the Appalachian Trail. Last year he finished college and almost immediately traveled up to Mt. Katahdin in Maine and started walking. Over 5 and a half months, he experienced all the joy, freedom, pain, understanding, struggle and accomplishment that the trail brings. A real life-changing experience! Matt loves chatting about his time on the AT and I really enjoyed hearing his tales about his many adventures on the trail. In this episode we chat about what really inspired him to take on this quest, the biggest meal of his whole entire life, the beauty of trail angels, awesome trail nicknames, how he handled the challenging moments, what the trail taught him about himself and what he plans on doing in the future. Also what inspired him and some friends to take on a brutal 28 mile day??? SPOILER ALERT: It rhymes with "Spinese Chuffet" Combine this with last week's episode with the "Blackalachian" Daniel White and you will really get a good idea of what trail life is like (although I have to imagine you really have to be there to fully "get it"). Hope you guys enjoy the last episode of 2017!!! It's been an amazing year! Thanks again for everyone who's tuned in and extra thanks for all of our amazing guests!!!!!!! EXCLAMATION MARKS!!! Huge thank you to "The Blackalachian" Daniel White for joining me on the show this week! A year ago Daniel was keeping his life busy, grinding away at a job he wasn't passionate about. Doing the same thing day after day, until a cousin suggested he do something completely insane. Hike the Appalachian Trail. Walk through the mountains all the way from Georgia to Maine. Daniel was in. I'm so inspired by his story because he went from a complete newbie and took the hardest step- just starting. Growing up, hiking and camping wasn't the norm in his community. Before his hike he had never slept out in the woods or climbed a mountain. But he wanted to challenge his own status quo. There are so many aspects of his story that define bravery: saying you are going to finish something and letting absolutely nothing stop you, being flexible and learning on the fly, accepting adversity and maintaining joy, and setting off the normal path of life to forge your own way! In this episode Daniel shares his story. What was the first week like? What lessons did he learn and how did he change over the course of the trip? When was the first moment he truly felt like a thru-hiker? What messages does he have for people who are stuck in life or uncomfortable doing something outside the norm? Huge thanks again to Daniel for taking some time to chat with me! I was inspired to chat with him after reading this wonderful Trek.co article "First Gold-Mout Rapper to Thru-hike the Appalachian Trial" https://thetrek.co/appalachian-trail/blackalachian-first-gold-mouth-rapper-thru-hike-appalachian-trail/ Also make sure you check out his EXCELLENT Youtube channel "The Blackalachian". He recorded almost every day on the trail and his videos will give you a great idea of what it takes to complete a thru-hike of the AT.
