Speaking of Travel®
Bassoonist Frank Morelli And The Journey Of A Life Well Played

Speaking of Travel®

Some conversations stay with you because of what a person has accomplished. Others stay with you because of who that person became along the way. Internationally acclaimed bassoonist Frank Morelli is both. His story is about far more than music. It's about what happens when a lifetime of dedication shapes not only an artist, but a human being. There's something deeply moving about a person who spends a lifetime devoted to music and still meets the world with humility and a genuine sense of wonder. In this heartfelt episode of Speaking of Travel, Frank reflects on the deeper journey behind a life in music and the ways it shaped not only his career, but his understanding of purpose and gratitude. For more than 60 years, Frank's path has carried him around the world, from concert halls and international performances to decades spent mentoring and encouraging young musicians. Yet what stands out most is not simply his remarkable career, but the kindness and sincerity he brings to every part of his life. There is a gentleness in Frank that immediately puts people at ease. Even after years of recognition and accomplishment, he remains deeply grateful for the experiences music has given him. His love for teaching shines throughout this episode, along with his belief that music can open hearts and create connection in ways few things can. This conversation moves beyond performance and into something far more human. It becomes a reflection on what happens when someone continues evolving through every season of life.“The longer I've lived with music, the less it feels like performance and the more it feels like gratitude.”Frank Morelli continues to inspire not only through his artistry, but through the quiet grace and humanity he brings to the world around him.

Jeremy Guthrie is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who commanded the mound for over a decade with the Cleveland Indians, Baltimore Orioles, Colorado Rockies, and Kansas City Royals. A Stanford graduate and former BYU standout, Jeremy was an American League Rookie of the Year candidate in 2007, represented Team USA in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, and started Games 3 and 7 of the 2014 World Series before earning a World Series ring in 2015. Off the field, Jeremy serves as an MLB Commissioner's Ambassador, traveling to over 60 countries across six continents to grow the game globally. He is also the owner of Custom Cleats, the pioneering company that converts any sneaker into a high-performance cleat for athletes of all ages and sports. A man of deep faith, Jeremy's two-year mission in Spain at age 19 laid the foundation for a life built on service, resilience, and redefining what success truly means. Takeaways:Redefine Success Before It Defines You: Jeremy learned on the streets of Spain what most people never figure out in a lifetime — success isn't about the scoreboard. It's about the effort you pour into becoming the best version of yourself. John Wooden said it, Jeremy lived it, and it carried him through a decade in the big leagues when the stats didn't always cooperate. If you're measuring your worth by outcomes you can't control, you're playing a losing game. Control your effort, your focus, your resilience — and let the results take care of themselves.Forget Yourself and Find Your Purpose: At 19, Jeremy walked away from a professional baseball contract to spend two years serving others in Spain. No fastball. No spotlight. Just service. And what he found was the foundation of everything that followed — a deeper understanding of who he was and what he was capable of becoming. When you stop chasing what the world says you should want and start pouring into other people, that's when the real breakthroughs happen. Lose yourself in service and watch your purpose reveal itself.Every Day You Have a Platform, Use It: Jeremy's teammate Kevin Millar said it best — every day you're in the big leagues, you have a chance to touch somebody's life. Jeremy took that to heart and ran with it across 60 countries and six continents. But here's the thing — you don't need a Major League roster spot to have a platform. You have one right now. The question is, are you using it? Whether it's a kind word, a signed autograph, or showing up for your community, your platform is your opportunity to leave people better than you found them. Sound Bytes:“Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of the self-satisfaction that you have in making the best effort you can to become the best you're capable of becoming.” “Every day you're in the big leagues, you have a chance to touch somebody's life.” “I learned the joy of forgetting yourself, of losing yourself, and yet finding yourself through that.” Connect & Discover Jeremy Guthrie:Instagram: @therealjgutsCustom Cleats Instagram: @customcleatsFacebook: @TheRealJGutsX: @TheRealJGutsWebsite: customcleats.com

You may have heard me quote a former acting coach a time or two on this podcast, that “if you want to bring life into your characters, you have to first live a life in order to have something to pour onto the stage, screen or microphone.”  I'd say the same holds true for any good author or storyteller. Today, I'm incredibly honored to have as my guest, Alex Poppe, the multi-award-winning author renowned for her compelling literary fiction that delves into themes of resilience, identity, and social justice.  After graduating at the top of her university's undergraduate business school, Alex began her  professional career as a business analyst for Mobile Oil and quickly became disenchanted with the corporate culture after, she, and I quote, “hit my head too many times on the glass ceiling and exchanged my corporate life to pursue an artistic one.”  Poppe moved to New York to enroll in the ‘Circle in the Square's' two-year professional actor training program.  It's where Alex honed her observation skills and enabled her to quickly identify and address individual student learning challenges after she quit her acting pursuits, got certified to Teach English as a Second Language, moved to Poland for her first teaching assignment, and then eventually to the Middle East spending almost a decade there as an educator in several prestigious public and private universities.   Her experience as an actor, world traveler, humanitarian aid worker and educator in war-torn conflict zones, before coming back stateside to work for USAID, is what Alex pours onto the page. Alex joins me today to talk about her forthcoming memoir, Breakfast Wine: A Memoir of Chasing an Unconventional Life and Finding a Way Home, which chronicles her transformative journey from that disillusioned corporate professional in the U.S. to an educator navigating cultural complexities and personal upheavals.  To contact Alex Poppe directly via the followng: Business email: sallya.poppe@gmail.com Business website: www.alexpoppe.com On Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/alex_poppe_author/ On LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/sallyalexpoppe/ Order Breakfast Wine at Bookshop.org or your local indie bookstore. When did traveling stop being about the place you are visiting and instead become about you in that place? And how much do shows like The White Lotus have to do with this mental shift? When ordinary travelers flock en masse to a tourist site made famous by a popular television show, pushing the location well past the limits of its capacity, what is the damage? Today we tackle this topic, inconvenient though it may be to travel-lovers. Read the thought-proviking article by Sarah Stodola that in part inspired this episode. ***Katy's sister Dana has recently been diagnosed with stage 4 agressive brain cancer. To help with the staggering medical costs—her specialist is outside her insurance network—as well of the costs of temporarily relocating to San Francsico for her treatments, please consider donating to her GoFundMe. The untold story of how a young Peruvian boy's fascination with National Geographic magazines transformed into a life dedicated to global exploration unfolds in my conversation with Jorge Salas Guevara. As founder of New Paths Expeditions, Jorge has crafted extraordinary journeys to 58 destinations across our planet's most remote corners while personally visiting over 102 unique locations.Jorge's adventure began in the Peruvian Andes, traveling treacherous mountain roads with his family to connect with their ancestral culture. His grandfather's worldwide travels and gift of National Geographic magazines sparked a passion that later flourished when Jorge discovered rock climbing while studying in Chile. A chance opportunity replacing an ailing guide in Patagonia launched his career leading global expeditions, eventually rising to leadership positions in major travel companies before founding New Paths Expeditions, now celebrating its tenth anniversary. What sets Jorge's approach apart is his dedication to balancing nature with authentic cultural immersion. While his small groups of 10-12 travelers witness spectacular wildlife in destinations like the Pantanal (jaguars), Madagascar (lemurs), and Papua New Guinea (birds of paradise), they also experience meaningful human connections. Jorge arranges cooking classes with local grandmothers, private lectures with renowned archaeologists, and spontaneous "pop-up opportunities" like visiting Berber nomad camps. His 27-year relationship with Papua New Guinea has made him an honorary member of two indigenous clans, giving his groups unparalleled access to one of Earth's most fascinating cultural frontiers, where people maintaining Stone Age traditions simultaneously navigate the modern world with smartphones.Whether you're captivated by wildlife photography, cultural anthropology, or simply seeking experiences that transcend ordinary tourism, Jorge's philosophy of adventure as "discovery" offers a refreshing perspective on meaningful travel. #151 - What could inspire someone to leave a stable engineering career and venture into the unknown on a bicycle? Meet Jacob Lemanski, whose incredible journey of 999 days biking across the globe defies expectations and challenges societal norms. In this episode, Jacob shares his odyssey from rural Pennsylvania to the world stage, driven by a passion ignited during a cross-country bike tour at the tender age of 20. His story is not just about the miles traveled but the transformation of his life's path, as he finds fulfillment and a new identity through this daring adventure.Jacob's journey wasn't meticulously planned—quite the opposite. With minimal route mapping and a focus on spontaneous exploration, he embraced uncertainty, relying on robust gear and the support of a tracking device for peace of mind. Covering over 38,000 miles across six continents, Jacob reveals the logistics and challenges of traveling self-sufficiently, surviving on little more than food and water. It's a tale of resilience, an embrace of the unknown, and a testament to the power of living life on one's own terms. From the dangers of the Andean mountains to the serene beauty of the Yucatan Peninsula, Jacob recounts the highs and lows of life on the road. He opens up about the emotional challenges of disconnecting from modern communication and the profound joy found in nature's simplicity. The journey didn't just change his perspective; it led to a creative pivot—from engineering to founding Ant Life, an art company inspired by humble ant farms. Jacob invites listeners to experience the vastness of human potential and the world's beauty, offering inspiration to embark on their own journeys of discovery.Visit LandPirate.com to get your gear that has you, the adventurer, in mind.
