Makerspaces offer support and encouragement for educators who want to incorporate art into the curriculum. Colleen's guest is Dr. Erin Beard, the Programs Director for Talent Maker City, who describes a makerspace as a community learning lab that furnishes materials and equipment in arts and technology to make learning a hands-on experience. Imagine a place with a 3D printer, a wood-working shop, a ceramics studio, and people to help you use them all.  With twenty previous years of experience as a middle and high school teacher, Dr. Beard emphasizes the importance of STEAM-based adventures (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) to guide student inquiry and critical thinking. She offers several suggestions for using all forms of art to revive the inherent love of learning that may have been shut down through traditional methods.  Educators are encouraged to find a nearby makerspace for learning opportunities, use of equipment, and advice for adding a tactile dimension to their teaching. In a makerspace they will find camaraderie and shared knowledge to turn their ideas for the classroom into reality.    Resources -  Talent Maker City What is a Makerspace and where is one near me?   OEA Grow is a proud member of the Labor Radio Podcast Network

There is so much overlap between art and engineering...so much creativity that goes into the making of things. Bre Pettis knows this firsthand. As a puppeteer-turned teacher-turned entrepreneur, Bre founded MakerBot and helped democratize 3D printing, making it accessible for Fab Labs and MakerSpaces all over the country.Today, Bre is at it again with Bantam Tools, a manufacturer of desktop CNC machines that are inspiring and equipping today's industrial innovators and tomorrow's inventors. In this episode, Bre is sharing all his experiences in the world of STEAM and innovation with our audience. Learn about the origins of MakerBot and Bantam Tools. Discover why students need access to the tools that can help them bring ideas to reality. And learn why having industry-grade machines in classrooms helps bridge the gap from education to the workforce.3 Big Takeaways from this episode:Let's take huge, difficult machinery and make it accessible, friendly and affordable for students: This is how we equip students for today's high-tech workforce. Bre is on a mission to remove the barriers that keep students from being able to design and create what's in their mind. With the right tools and resources (like 3D printers, desktop CNC machines and even pen plotters!) students can get the introductory skills that translate into real careers. There is unique value in both additive & subtractive manufacturing: Now that most students have access to 3D printing, it's time to bring subtractive manufacturing back into the classroom. Both technologies have a unique use case that students should identify and explore. Bre talks about when to use which technology, and the real benefit of letting a student experience the creative process from ideation to finished part.Students find their "aha" moments in technical education: From Fab Labs to Makerspaces to STEAM classrooms and Tech Ed labs, students discover new aptitudes and a love for making when they're given the right set of tools and resources. Bre shares how schools can help identify the right teachers to lead these endeavors, unlocking new potential for both the students and the educators.Resources mentioned in this episode:To learn more about Bantam Tools, visit their website: www.bantamtools.comInterested in the NEW Bantam Tools desktop CNC milling machine powered by FANUC? It's not unusual to find MakerSpaces popping up on several school campuses as a way to offer students hands on learning opportunities.  But does 'making' have to be confined to the MakerSpace for only a few classes per week? What would happen if ALL educators adopted a 'maker' mindset, and provided hands on opportunities that spanned all classrooms, subjects and learners?  My guest and MakerSpace Founder Mark Loundy discusses how to adopt this mindset, and the transformations we can see in schools as a result. We learn how to:  Develop project-based experiences that allow for 'making' across all subjects  Help the MakerSpace be accessible to all parts of the school depending on the learning experience  Build the WHY for the MakerSpace before the HOW Develop a school culture that values flexibility, innovation and tinkering Transition from 'MakerSpace' to 'MakerMindset'  Get in touch with Mark: LinkedIn, Twitter (@markloundy), Facebook, Website.  Story of the 'CREATE' MakerSpace: https://k5create.blogspot.com/p/the-story-of-create.html Apply for the PBL Collab and Grab Monthly Forums: https://forms.gle/2vzPknQbeuzTE3h47  Mark's Bio: Mark Loundy is a former journalist, photographer and social media pioneer. John Spencer is something of a project based learning guru and an expert in delivering empowering student-centered projects. In this episode, we get all into how to manage and how to incorporate PBL in history and social studies classrooms. In the episode we talk about how moving towards more project-based-learning can be intimidating for teachers because as John discusses, getting off the tracks is part of the process. But we discuss ways to provide supports for students, ensuring content and standards are still being met, and how to enjoy the process even when it gets messy. John shared about fun, single class period explorations that he calls "wonder day projects" where students research and discover something that they are interested in and want to learn about. I also loved his idea of using 'curiosity-casts' where students create a podcast reflecting and discussing about what they learned during the project or exploration period.Dan, Caitlin, and John share ways to create 'maker spaces' even with limited resources- because you don't need 3D printers and tech centers. You just need a to make room or create some space for students to work and create original projects and products of their interest (within your content and standards, of course). Love this quote John shared:"Higher standards doesn't mean more work, it means better thinking." Something many administrators and teachers could reflect on. :)John Spencer mentions, "The Pulse of PBL" by Mike Kaechele and Matinga Ragatz. Since you're always looking for question, here is another one. As a weekend woodworker who doesn't get much time in the workshop, I regularly get the problem that milled stock doesn't get touched for several days before I can continue with the project. Right now I am working on an outdoor table made from European oak and there might be a few weeks between milling the boards and actually assembling the table. I have heard of the solution to use plastic bags or shrink wrap but that doesn't really work for 7-foot boards. How do you handle stuff like that? 2) Hey guys, love the podcast and thank you for all you guys do! I made a dining room table for my sister-in-law about a month ago. The table is made out of Hard Maple and is 3.5' wide by 8' long. I noticed when I first bought the boards that there were some very small, hairline cracks at the very ends of the boards. After glue up I was able to square up the table by cutting the end that had the worst cracks completely off. Unfortunately, I did not have enough material to completely eliminate them from the other end. So instead, I cut as much as I could from the other end and filled the remaining hairline cracks with Plastic Glue wood filler. This seemed to have remedied the problem! I then finished the table with 4-5 coats of water based poly, achieving a nice, thick coat of finish. Now, about a month later, my sister-in-law is showing me spots where the hairline cracks are reappearing. Curiously enough, they're reappearing from both ends too. My question is multilayered. First, is this cause for concern? The cracks are very small and not easily noticed unless you look very closely. However, will these cracks continue to grow over the years? Second, given how small these cracks are, how can I go about repairing this issue? I don't know if thin CA glue will help with the issue or simply act as a bandaid. And I don't believe these cracks are large enough to allow thin epoxy to seep into them. Any help/advice you guys could give would be very much appreciated! Chris     Sean 1) Love the show and appreciate what all of you contribute to the woodworking community. I have been a hobbyist woodworker for a long time and though my projects are not fine furniture or wining any awards I truly enjoy time in the shop and making simple things for friends and family. My question is about finishing.  I hate finishing, so much that I feel guilty sometimes that my project truly never really gets completed even those it's gifted away. I justify to myself that I'm letting the new owner finish it to their preferences but the reality is I hate that step.  I've done spray on (rattle can) shellac, poly, cheap spray paint, Briwax  and rubbed on some polyurethane but I would like to venture out a little farther without fear of ruining my hard work. Any suggestions on how to take the next step without jumping in over my head?   I have sanders, planers, all the usual finishing tools but I'm basically lazy. 2) I am a hobbyist woodworker with a full time job to support my hobby, and I am lucky in the fact that people are asking me to make things that I want to make. With the urban lumber I am really enjoying the wild and crazy figure that comes from non-commercial trees, crotch grain especially, and the randomness of pallets (everything from cedar to white oak and an occasional exotic species). My question, since we are all woodworkers, is how much would you spend to not buy commercial lumber? As an example, I purchased my 14" bandsaw, 6" joiner, and 10" planer used for $400 total. The chainsaw and chainsaw mill cost $130. Am I crazy? Joshua Huy 1)Good morning gents. I hope this finds you well. Thanks for the great show. So 2 questions that are related: I'm losing access to my current workshop - a 2 car garage. Renting commercial space is very expensive, so any other suggestions for finding a space for my workshop would be appreciated. I'm only looking for 400 square feet or so. Because of #1, I'm considering joining a community maker space. Pros and Cons? thanks Mark 2) I made a slatted bench out of red oak, but I'm questioning how I want to finish it.  The bench is from Steve Ramsay's course, and can be seen here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B-LKKPyBEVE/ Because of the slats, which are about 3/4" wide and 2 1/2" deep, getting finish down there with a sprayer would be impossible, so I think I want to do something I can wipe on.  I've created my own simple finish of equal parts spar urethane, mineral spirits, and boiled linseed oil (so similar to a Danish oil) that I've wiped on to other projects with success, but not sure if there may be other options that I should consider.  This is a gift for my parents and will live inside, probably by their patio door for them to sit down on to put on their shoes. Also, if I go the homemade Danish oil route, any suggestions on how many coats to apply, and what to do between coats? Keep up the great podcast, thank you! -Nick

I am joined today by Burton Hable. Burton Hable is a music educator, currently living in Central Virginia. He is a doctoral student in Boston University's Music Education program, and his research interests lie in how people construct music knowledge in the context of a makerspace. He also serves as the Operations and Building Manager for the Charlottesville Band. Prior to moving to Virginia in the summer of 2018, he taught instrumental music in Iowa for eight years. I've also known Burton for 20 years now, as we were high school classmates and played trombone in the same high school band together, and both of us came back years later to teach in the same district we graduated from. In so many ways, Burton and I share a similar journey in arriving at progressive education, and I am grateful to call him a friend and a learning partner for these many years. As the title mentions, this episode focuses on the niche pedagogy of “constructionism” largely attributed to one man, Seymour Papert, who published his first book, Mindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas, back in 1980. It's both fascinating and frustrating that despite 4 decades of research supporting the powerful impact on cognition and the opportunity for collaboration inherent in these ideas, the philosophy and framework of constructionism and similarly modeled “makerspaces” are still only deployed in limited pockets on the fringes of the standard model of school. This conversation gets at the same central premise as so many others on this podcast, that is our limited imagination about “what works” in schools as they are currently structured, and “what works to do what” within music education in particular. What does it mean to be musically literate? To be a musician? Burton Hable imagines the role of makerspaces supported by constructionist pedagogy in music ed as a way to expand and enrich the standard model for students, with the goal of creating a broader collaborative experience for students to engage with all aspects - creating, performing, responding, and connecting - of what it means to be musical.Connect with Burton @ burtonhable.com or on Twitter @burtonhableGUESTSBurton Hable, music educator & Operations and Building Manager for the Charlottesville BandRESOURCESMindstorms: Children, Computers, and Powerful Ideas by Seymour Papert (open access)Review: The Case for Constructivist Classrooms by Nick Covington See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

She has five years of teaching experience, holds an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Educational Technology, and has served on several STEM-focused boards. We talk about equipment that goes into a makerspace, from furniture to supplies and tools. Mary shares insights on how your school can get a makerspace, and her company even offers 3D models for proposals and grant writing. We also learn some of the benefits of having training that bridges the gap between academics and hands-on experience. Mary shares real-life stories of how offering a different learning environment can help kids who may have been struggling thrive. Episode Highlights: [03:26] Makerspaces are magical places where hands-on learning bridges the gap between theoretical and practical knowledge. It brings joy back to learning and allows students to apply academic content in the makerspace.[06:21] Mary shares an example of a school with a small makerspace used by multiple classes. There was 3D printing, computer science, and they even worked with cardboard and paper. Everything they were doing in the classroom is applied in the makerspace. The learning was adapted to the school culture.[08:45] Some schools will have a makerspace managed by a specific teacher for a subject or area and other schools let the makerspace be a drop-in for all of the teachers to use.[10:20] Building a maker culture starts early on. Start small with more hands-on learning. 1st Maker Space can help with planning a space and recommending products. They can also help with grant writing. There is also funding available from multiple sources.[20:10] Mary's son has ADHD. He is engaged in the makerspace. Another struggling student made a car out of cardboard and used a laser cutter and 3D CAD. He ended up leading others and making a great car and then helping other students.
