Phat Phil Cooper Since the 1990s, Phat Phil Cooper has been on a journey through DJ culture and electronic music with more twists and turns than your average million-selling novel. Through his work as a DJ, label manager, curator, record shop owner, event organiser and music consultant, Cooper has remained a central figure in a story that has yet to reach a conclusion. Musically, Cooper has long been celebrated for his diverse approach to music. While naturally at home championing seductive, sun-kissed sounds, Cooper's roots can be traced back to the dancefloors of legendary Liverpool club Cream, where during the 1990s and early 2000s he was a key resident DJ. Three decades on, Cooper's club-moving skills remain as sharp as ever, leading some to compare him favourably to Mr Scruff, Harvey and Gilles Peterson. Away from the dancefloor, Cooper has spent much of the last three decades assisting like-minded artists, working as a music and events consultant, and running or working for record labels including Northern Records, Sick Trumpet, KAT and the African Music Corporation. Today's he's best known for steering Through God's Own Eyes and NuNorthern Soul, an imprint that has recently put out fine fare by Ilija Rudman, Jose Manuel, Blair French and Private Agenda. Now residing in Ibiza with regular sunset sessions at La Torre, Phat Phil Cooper remains one of electronic music's unsung heroes. Of course, he'd never think of himself that way: in his eyes, he's just someone who lives and breathes music, showcases sounds he loves and promotes artists who inspire him. Balearic Sessions

Shaun Gladwell’s practice engages personal experience and a wider speculation of art history to examine the dynamics of contemporary culture. Shaun transposes forms of urban expression such as skateboarding, graffiti, BMX bicycle riding, break-dancing and extreme sports into the multiple mediums of his practice. These performances, videos, paintings, photographs, sculptures and virtual reality works make discursive investigations into forms of creativity and notions of freedom. Hear Shaun speak more about his work in this conversation with Blair French, CEO of Carriageworks. The 'Art of influence' series features pioneering Sydney College of the Arts alumni, as they reflect on their careers, creative practice and the themes that inform their work. Joining us on our bonus session is Detroit based producer Blair French we asked him pull together a selection of music that inspired him when recording the 'Patio Pastels EP' due for release on our label, 1st May.Blair tells us "The EP was crafted during a brutal winter while living at a farm home an hour outside the city. I'd look out into a blizzard and imagine beaches and camping trips. If the sun peaked out just a little I'd go outside and soak it up for a few minutes, then retreat back inside and continue working. The hardest part was getting friends to venture out and add their talents, but the ones that did gave the songs what they needed. The introduction to Balearic gave me that balance between ambient and dance music I was searching for. I feel I always maintained an island vibe whether as in isolated, different, or tropic, and as I drastically shifted gears, naturally inspirations altered."

Maximum Commune (Ugly Business... on the basis of disbelief.) Talking with Australian New York based artist Guy Benfield, about his performance installation work Maximum Commune, part of the Aftermath: Performance Installation series curated by Blair French at Sydney's ART SPACE gallery, right next to the harbour. With the USS Kitty Hawk moored across the street, Guy walked and talked us through his unique work and world. "Maximum Commune... utilises the cultural model of the 'pavilion' juxtaposed with tropes of modernist architecture, examples of hand-built alternative Zome housing originating from Southern California in the 1960s and collectives such as Drop City. Within these structures, Guy Benfield performs a series of actions, 'droppings' or situational episodes that re-animate tropes that were once declared obsolete obsolete, such as ritual, live action painting in the genre of george mathieu, the 'Art informal' movement in France, and the Japanese actionist painting movement - Gutai group. In these performance scenarios Benfield investigates the West Coast Funk Ceramic movement of the late sixties, pottery as an expressionist dialogue and the bourgeois bohemian lifestyle he experienced while growing up insuburban Sydney." The Aftermath: Performance Installation series provides a critical and public focus to the complex relationship of performance to installation art, sharing a genealogy, as they do, in early conceptual and post-object art. Aftermath centres on the installation 'aftermath' of performance, or conversely, performance as a strategy for creation of material environments - the bleeding back and forth of active models of performance and its post-life.Each week one of six artists participating from Australia and abroad will undertake a performance work in one of the Artspace galleries resulting in an installation 'aftermath' and collectively creating a dynamic, rolling set of relationships between changing spaces.
