Upcycling battery materials for next generation EV batteries

University of Birmingham researchers have demonstrated a method to upcycle end-of-life battery waste into materials that can be used for 'next generation' battery cathodes. The team used the recovered material from end-of-life EV batteries to synthesize compounds with a disordered rocksalt (DRX) structure. Can EV batteries be created using Upcycling? DRX materials are seen as a promising alternative to the regular layered structure of conventional cathode materials, as they increase the capacity of the cathode, allowing development of higher energy density rechargable Lithium ion batteries. The researchers believe this is the first time such materials have been made from recycled EV battery feedstock. Results of electrochemical testing showed high performance, that is comparable to materials prepared from conventional high purity reagents, demonstrating the applicability of this new approach. The cathode, which is the part of batteries that supply electrical current, is the primary limitation for achieving the high-energy, low-cost lithium ion (LI) batteries needed for the transition to zero emissions at tailpipe that will be required to reduce global CO2 emissions and mitigate global warming. For electric vehicle (EV) batteries, the challenge is to design a high energy battery cathode that will maintain its ability to discharge electricity over a large number of charge-discharge cycles. For recycling experts, the challenge is to design recycling processes for lithium-ion batteries when they reach the end of their useful life. Researchers at the University of Birmingham have taken these challenges one step further, by tasking themselves with the objective of 'upcycling' recovered battery materials, so the waste streams from current EV batteries can be used to manufacture new high-performance batteries. The research, which is published in ChemRxiV, is a development of previous work demonstrating ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) can be used as a leaching agent, replacing the need for hazardous chemicals in cathode recycling. The research team led by Professor Peter Slater has now shown recycled material from a cathode containing lithium manganese oxide (LMO) and nickel-rich 'layered' oxide (LO), can be upcycled to lithium manganese nickel oxides (LMNO) - a high voltage cathode material, which is attracting high levels of commercial interest. For the current study the researchers used citric acid (a natural component of citrus fruits) as a leaching agent to further reduce the number of steps in the process, which they applied to cathodes from an end-of-life Gen 1 Nissan Leaf (2011 model, 40,000 miles), and used the recovered LMO as a starting point for LMNO synthesis. They then used the recovered material to synthesize compounds with a DRX structure. Professor Slater said: "The challenge is no longer about recycling. Battery chemistry has moved on considerably in the last decade, and, as first-generation EV batteries reach the end of their lives, their components need to be upcycled to deliver chemistries that can be reused in the newer batteries." The research team is working on a number of methods for recycling and upcycling battery cathode materials, and is looking for long-term partners for pilot studies, deliver technologies to existing infrastructure, or collaborate on further research to develop novel approaches. Upcycling of low value end-of-life cathode material into next generation cathode materials is published in ChemRxiV and available at: https://doi.org/10.26434/chemrxiv-2023-hg9z8 For media information contact Ruth Ashton, University of Birmingham Enterprise, email: r.c.ashton@bham.ac.uk About the University of Birmingham The University of Birmingham is ranked amongst the world's top 100 institutions, and its work brings people from across the world to Birmingham, including researchers and teachers and more than 6,500 international students from nearly 150 countries. BANG! @southernvangard #radio Ep325! Doe and Meeks are back with the most non-threatening rap podcast you've ever heard! This week brings the return of MC BECCA - you might know her from the original Southern Vangard Radio intro drop in the early days of the show, and you may have heard her on the Eddie “Cappuccino” Meeks classic, “100 Blunts”! Becca hung out with us the whole night, through all the new rap records and all the trash talking - we had ourselves a real nice time. That said, we had to wrap up the show early in the last talk break because of some dummy who couldn't help from making a few inappropriate comments in our Twitch channel while recording on Sunday night - but you'll have to hit the Twitch stream to see / hear about that. BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the RHETTMATIC interview session! There’s a LOT you can talk about with this world renowned DJ/producer. This week, however, is SPECIAL, as we dig in with Rhett on “V”, the first VISIONARIES album in 13 years! Not only did we get all of the behind the curtain goodness on new album from the legendary crew - that’s KEY-KOOL, DANNI, LMNO, 2MEX, & LORD ZEN and RHETTMATIC himself if you didn’t know - we also got hit off with TWO WORLD EXCLUSIVES from the album that you can hear on our Ep268 mix that dropped Tuesday! We also rap with Rhett about how the Beat Junkie crew had to pivot with Beat Junkie TV and their DJ school, Beat Junkie Institute of Sound, when COVID-19 hit, why DJ Khalil convinced him to move to software for production many moons ago and how Rhett was way ahead of the curve in using Adrian Younge’s music as a sample source. Yes, we know you know - there’s a bunch more inside - so go ahead and press play, cop a Visionaries hat or tee @ visionarieshiphop.store today and keep your ears to the ground for that #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK Recorded live October 26, 2020 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #soundcloud #youtube #spotifypodcast #googlepodcasts #stitcherradio #mixcloud #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard twitter/IG: @southernvangard @jondoeatl @cappuccinomeeks

It has been said in the music industry that “it’s not what you know, but who you know, that makes one successful.” Taylor “Cas Metah” Hogle may argue that who you know, has a great impact on what you know. A quick listen to the Ohio native’s music reveals his understanding that life is about relationships. A glance at his discography reveals just how well he understands it, and how well he puts it into practice. Cas Metah is a friend to all true hip-hop heads, and he thinks it’s about time you get acquainted. Taylor Hogle fell in love with hip-hop as a teenager. Never one to shy away from commitment, Cas wrote raps for two years before ever touching a microphone! In 1997 he began recording homemade mixtapes and gaining a rep locally. Alongside 2-Tone, Ruffian, Shaw Bihland several other hungry talents, Cas formed Field Specialists. Metah quickly became the crews leader/in- house engineer, nicknaming his home studio the “Guest Room” due to the frequency of company and all night sessions. In 2002 Cas pressed up Key Tah Life, his first album of all original material. A chance meeting with JustMe in ‘03, led to a great friendship and the formation of Scribbling Idiots. Over the years the collective has discovered amazing talent worldwide and currently boasts the following “family” members: JustMe, Cas Metah, Theory Hazit, Elias, ReFlex the Architect, MP Ancient, Wonder Brown, Mouf Warren, MattmaN and Jaq.  From landing opening gigs with Joell Ortiz, Twista, The Pharcydeand Bizzy Bone just to name a few, to hitting up tour dates with vets like CunninLynguists, J-Live and Aceyalone, the list goes on and on as Cas continues to create a large buzz in hip-hop circles on and off stage. Due in large part to Cas’ tireless work in the studio, he has released numerous albums, EP’s and/or single songs on his own, as well as with several established record labels, including: Plattertude Recordings (U.K.), Illect Recordings, End Of Earth Records, Dunsin’ Donuts (Japan), Soulspazm, and BBM (Baka Boyz Media)/Empire Distribution. When it comes to collaborating with some of the best known (and unknown) artists in the game, Cas has worked with nearly everybody! Here’s just a highlight reel: Masta Ace, Kno, Witchdoctor, T-mo Goodie, 4th Disciple, LMNO, Deacon The Villain, Mars ILL, Copywrite, J. Rawls, Hell Razah, Shabazz The Disciple, Mista Sinista, Audible Doctor, Blueprint, J57, Craig G, D.V. Alias Khryst, Casual, Wordsworth, Yukmouth, Ras Kass, Ahmad & Ski Beatz! Wow! Perhaps more impressive than any of the credits listed above, is the countless guest appearances, cameos, and side-projects Cas has piled up throughout the past two decades. Prolific doesn’t begin to explain this young man’s writing ability. Nor does it explain his magnetic personality and networking skills. Just Google the name “Cas Metah” and it will take you down a plethora of rabbit holes! And if you don’t know, now you know!
