Anita Heiss talks about the writing craft and process behind her novel Dirrayawadha. Anita shares her insights about weaving research, backstory and Wiradyuri language into the narrative, emphasising the importance of authors trusting themselves and their stories. We discuss Anita's meticulous planning when it comes to her novels, which involves chapter breakdowns, character profiles, and using butcher's paper to keep organised. She talks about the importance of pre-manuscript consultations, sensitivity reads, and the editorial process with her First Nations editor, Grace Lucas-Pennington. Anita highlights the necessity for writers to remove themselves from their work to avoid burnout and gain a fresh perspective, as well as tips for keeping your writing authentic and managing the emotional labour of tackling heavy historical content.ABOUT DIRRAYAWADHA'Dirrayawadha is full of heart and hope, truth-telling and history – and shimmers with language too' Guardian'A story from the past given vivid life for new understanding' Kate GrenvilleBathurst, 1820sMiinaa was a young girl when the white ghosts first arrived. Over the past 200 years, theatre has often been a lightning rod for social and political upheaval in the United States. Even the plays of William Shakespeare have been the subject of violent debate. This surprising history is examined in two recent books by James Shapiro: Shakespeare in a Divided America and The Playbook. Also, Trent Dalton's Love Stories, based on conversations with strangers on a Brisbane street corner, comes to the stage at this year's Brisbane Festival, and we pay tribute to the Australian playwright Jack Hibberd (Dimboola; A Stretch of the Imagination) who has died at the age of 84.

In this episode Elaine chats with Australian performance artist and dancer Leah Shelton about her show Batshit. We chat the inspiration for the show, her grandmother's story and the narrative of the “Cray” woman. Batshit - Traverse Theatre Dates: 1st -25th August @ Various Times Get Tickets Here: https://www.traverse.co.uk/whats-on/event/batshit-festival-24 BATSHIT Women have long been locked up, medicated, pathologized and silenced by a simple label - ‘crazy'. BATSHIT is a wildly theatrical, unexpectedly funny, and deeply intimate story of female madness. Created by psycho-siren Leah Shelton (AU) and directed by Olivier award-winning performance artist Ursula Martinez (UK), this is a requiem for Leah's grandmother Gwen, who was incarcerated for seeking independence in 1960s Australia. BATSHIT draws on personal stories, pop psychology and Prozac-laden humour to explore the myths, fantasies and fears that keep us compliant, and the systems that let us down. Dedicated to all the women labelled hysterical, psycho, hormonal and deluded by a society that seeks to control and discredit their experiences. LEAH SHELTON Psycho-siren Leah Shelton creates stylized, guttural, renegade feminist work soaked in cult references and dark humour. Her work has taken her from the glamour of Las Vegas to the back streets of Kings Cross, from rigorous training in Japan to live art festivals in New York. As a solo artist, Leah has played on and off West End in London. She has graced the cabaret stages of La Clique, Club Briefs, Little Death Club, Vegas Nocturne and Jonny Woo's infamous UnRoyal Variety Show. Her first solo work, ‘Terror Australis', received numerous awards and toured Australia and France. Leah's second solo work, ‘Bitch On Heat', directed by UK Performance Art luminary Ursula Martinez, has toured to major festivals in Australia and Soho Theatre London to critical acclaim and standing ovations. With Lisa Fa'alafi, Leah is Co-Director of artist collective Polytoxic, creating hyper-visual works underpinned by diversity and collaboration. Polytoxic have presented work at PS122's COIL Festival NYC, Harbourfront Centre Canada, WanSmolbag Vanuatu, Sydney Opera House, Darwin Festival, Brisbane Festival, APAM, Bleach*, Enlighten, ArtsHouse Melbourne, Ten Days on the Island, Brisbane Powerhouse and QPAC.Originally dance-trained, Leah has a diverse performance background including over ten years training in the Suzuki Actor Training Method with Frank Theatre (Brisbane, AU), Suzuki Company of Toga (Toga / Shizuoka, Japan) and SITI Company (New York, USA). https://www.leahshelton.live/batshit HIPA GUIDES: HIPA GUIDES OUR WEBSITE - www.persistentandnasty.co.uk Persistent Pal & Nasty Hero - Pals and Hero Membership Email – persistentandnasty@gmail.com Instagram - @persistentandnasty Twitter - @PersistentNasty Coffee Morning Eventbrite - Coffee Morning Tickets LINKTREE - LINKTR.EE Resources Samaritans - Rape Crisis Scotland - Rape Crisis UK ArtsMinds - BAPAM Freelancers Make Theatre Work Stonewall UK - Trevor Project - Mermaids UK Switchboard LGBT+ - GATE PLANNED PARENTHOOD DONATE - DONATE ABORTION SUPPORT NETWORK UK - ASN.COM- DONATE

They have to be believable but ruthless. Dangerous and deadly but also sympathetic. I mean, how much time do we spend on our main characters? If you're anything like me, you create entire backstories for them. You try to understand their goals, ambitions and needs. And of course you do. You should. But do you do the same for your antagonists? Today's guest is going to share his 3 secrets for writing unique and memorable antagonists.BIO:J.M. DONELLAN is a writer, musician, poet, and teacher. He is the author of the novels A Beginner's Guide to Dying in India and Killing Adonis (which was nominated for the Kirkus prize). His children's fantasy novel Zeb and the Great Ruckus was described by one child as ‘the best book ever, but it should have had Dr Who in it.' As new parents, Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall found themselves immersed in an uncanny world of children's entertainment. The impossible chirpiness of the singers made them wonder: what struggles lurk behind those bright eyes? Those musings have inspired their new musical comedy Bananaland. Also, Stephen Schwartz thought that he had left Broadway behind when he chanced to encounter a novel called Wicked. The composer-lyricist behind Godspell and Pippin had recently won three Academy Awards for his screen work, but the prospect of adapting Wicked drew him back to the stage. Now, Wicked is back.

If the border closures of the last two years have a silver lining for Australian artists and audiences, it must be the renewed focus on Australian work at our capital-city arts festivals. This year's Brisbane Festival demonstrates what that kind of investment can achieve, with an array of world premieres gracing the city's stages, including Holding Achilles, Tiddas, Slow Boat and Othello.

Ed Kuepper & The Queensland Symphony Orchestra: Live at The Tivoli, Fortitude Valley, 5 November 2020 Ed Kuepper has been a presence in Australian music for nearly fifty years. Born in Bremen, West Germany, Kuepper's family migrated to Brisbane when he was a child. In high school he co-founded the band that would become The Saints, one of the most influential groups in the history of punk music. After three albums with The Saints, Kuepper left the band to pursue more esoteric styles of music. He formed the band Laughing Clowns, which produced a more avant-garde jazz kind of sound. In the 1990s he returned to heavier rock music with The Aints, a project that was revived again in the 2010s, now with an exclamation mark at the end of their name. The Aints! were previously featured in episodes 267 and 269 of Live Delay. Since the mid-1980s Kuepper has released a long and steady stream of solo albums, crossing a broad swathe of genres though always anchored by his singular style of guitar playing. We previously aired a solo set of his in episode 145. In 2017 Kuepper teamed up for a collaboration with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, reinterpreting songs from his vast back catalogue in a live performance for the Brisbane Festival. In 2020 the collaboration was repeated, with Live Delay there to capture the event. The QSO was conducted by Peter Morris on the night, with orchestrations by Rob Davidson. Charlie played an intimate solo concert for Brisbane Festival in 2015 and now returns to the festival in full force with his super-band The Mothership. Stretched between acoustic melancholia, neo-soul, post-rock, and electronic-pop – the extremities that mark Charlie’s music – there’s a cinematic gravitas that takes you on a sonic journey set against the rich narratives of life’s tales. Regarded as one of Singapore’s finest musical exports, Charlie’s music has opened doors to the region’s biggest festivals and stages, supporting international artists such as Kimbra and Sigur Rós. His songs have reached over 2.4 million plays on Spotify alone, and his record ‘TIME/SPACE’ clinched the No. 1 album spot on iTunes’ Singapore chart and was also awarded Album of the Year by The Straits Times, Singapore’s leading newspaper. In this podcast Asian Pop Radio's Jay John speaks to Charlie about living in Melbourne for a period of time, musical influences, his performance earlier this year at Asia Pop Fest at Sydney Myer Music Bowl and what audiences in Brisbane have in stall or themselves. Charlie performs at the The Courier-Mail Magic Mirrors Spiegeltent, as part of Brisbane Festival, 5pm Sunday 17th of September. Visit brisbanefestival.com.au to book now.
