As we've discussed a lot on this show, a story is many things at once. But a story does not exist without a storyteller. Today's episode is about the stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves, that in turn, define who we are.   How we show up in the world has a big influence on whether the world hears us. And if they can't hear us, how could we possibly make them care? Put differently, the stories we tell ourselves have a direct influence on the ideas that live in the world. Each of us, every day, in our own way, tell the world if we matter, and together, we shape a collective narrative of what matters. What would happen if we did that more consciously?    Samara Bay believes that how we share our vision matters as much as what it is. She's actively redefining what power and authority sound like, teaching people how to use their voice to move their audience & change the world. In addition to coaching television & film actors, she's prepped clients for Broadway & LA theater, UN speeches, televised award show presentations, academic talks, tech pitches, and political ads. She also runs trainings and delivers keynotes across industries including for Women @Google, MAC Cosmetics, SXSW, Telemundo, Warner Brothers Discovery, Princeton University, Compass, and Emerge America. She's a professor of practice at USC's Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism.   Samara is also the author of a fantastic book and podcast by the same name, Permission to Speak: How to Change What Power Sounds Like, Starting With You. It's a #1 bestseller in Women & Business and Public Speaking and the perfect holiday gift!    In this episode, our host, Maya Guice, sits down with Samara Bay to explore how traditional perceptions of authoritative voices influence our communication, the ways our voice stories shape the narratives we share, her personal journey writing Permission to Speak, and practical tools we can all use to cultivate a voice that feels both authentic and powerful.   Ultimately, this episode is meant to be a holiday gift to you—an audience of amazing, creative, intelligent people. If the sound of your voice is the only thing holding you back, we hope this episode causes you to share your story in 2025.    For more information about Samara, connect with her: https://bit.ly/3OT3zHf    To purchase Permission to Speak: How to Change What Power Sounds Like, Starting With You, visit: https://bit.ly/4g8SIES    For more information about BRC Imagination Arts, visit: www.brcweb.com

It's often seen as something we need to shed in order to be seen as forward-thinking and cosmopolitan: our accents… But, are we in danger of losing an essential part of who we are? Are rural and regional accents on the decline in 21st Century Ireland?Well, it's the title of a theatre piece by actor and writer Emmet Kirwan, who takes his show on a new nationwide tour early next year and says: Accents should be celebrated, not corrected'.Andrea is joined by Senator Lynn Ruane, Josh Crosbie, Newstalk Reporter, Aisling Goodwin, Actor and Dialect Coach as well as listeners to discuss.

27 years after becoming a classic dark comedy that earned seven Academy Award nominations, including Oscar wins for Joel Coen and Ethan Coen (best original screenplay) and Frances McDormand (best actress), "Fargo" is back for its fifth season as an anthology series on FX and Hulu. Showrunner Noah Hawley's latest installment of the show that premiered in 2014 presents another standalone story that remains connected with the other seasons as well as the original movie. Season 5, which premieres Nov. 21, features Jon Hamm, Juno Temple and Jennifer Jason Leigh as the latest A-list actors to join the revolving cast that has included Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Allison Tolman and Colin Hanks (season 1); Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Kieran Culkin, Patrick Wilson and Ted Danson (season 2); Ewan McGregor, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Carrie Coon (season 3); and Chris Rock and Jason Schwartzman (season 4). While the first three season received generally positive reviews from both critics and audiences, the fourth season was mixed as the show was Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an 84% score from critics but a weaker 54% from audience ratings. So how good is season 5? While we keep things spoiler-free, co-host Bruce Miller screened half of the episodes and not only thinks it's the best show we'll get for the remainder of 2023, but it's at least the second best "Fargo" season to date. Miller has interviews with the three big stars as well as costume designer Carol Case and makeup department head Gail Kennedy.  Where to watch and more coverage "Fargo" the series on FX/Hulu "Fargo" the 1996 film on Max Contact us! The voice you have today is not the same voice you were born with. The things you experience and the media you're exposed to, all contribute to how you sound and frame what your idea of a powerful voice “should” sound like. But when you step out of the parameters set by culture, and abandon the idea of sounding “professional” you will discover that true power in your voice. Today's episode is a revolution in how to think about your voice with Samara Bay, author of “Permission to Speak”. We nerd out on redefining what power sounds like, why other people's voices and words impact your own voice, and what you can do to shift that narrative. Speaking with our “heart voice”, we dare you to consider what it would be like to have a different, more empowering relationship with your voice. Re-Story : Love in the time of COVID-19

Episode 5: What's Essential Welcome to 5 “What's Essential. I'm Sissy Siero your curator, your host for an audio story- wheel that's stopping for a brief moment to check in with how we're doing. We'll hear stories about shifting priorities to find the what's essential right now. Doing, having, perhaps being less, but better; a different gauge of time and energy spent. Also balancing personal relationships and purpose - not just how we work, where we live, and why we do what we do, but teasing, out of the tangle, the new essential - a closer look into the origins of patterns, and habitual thinking and life choices. Permission and room for the voice of innate, essential wisdom to have it's say. Cracking open secret vaults, and daring to ask uncomfortable questions- how staying with them actually gifts us with a broader capacity for more grace, love, and confidence. The chance to lean into who we are now, and becoming. What a strange buffet this moment in our collective lives. The pandemic has been slowly deleting the noise obscuring, and distorting, the music I'd been trying to dance [to] my life to for years. First we'll hear from Meme – what became essential in her life during the pandemic and into the uncertainty of now… ==================================================== Next up a conversation with Melissa Grogran - a Voice and Movement Expert - she's worked with yogis, Somatic Therapists, yoga and voice teachers, and business professionals - most notably as the Dialect Coach for the AMC series The Son, starring Pierce Brosnan. ============================= We'll be right back with more of episode 5 after this… Follow us on Instagram, and Facebook, at #LoveinthetimeofCOVID-19podcast, or at sissysierosvoiceatx, to get the latest episodes. You can also find us on my website - sissysiero.com, on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your favorite podcasts. ==================================================== Now a reflection on what's essential from acclaimed Austin-based Jazz musician Dan Redner. As an active Music director, pianist, songwriter, and educator, Dan's incredible, generous heart, talent and music continues to touch so many lives; especially during the pandemic. ===================================================== Next is an introspective share from a longtime friend and hotelier who speaks to us from her home in Uruguay. Throughout the pandemic, Laura has been a captive audience to nature's play of seasons – I've lived vicariously through her brilliant daily photo journal – curating nature, and the 2 and four legged fellow travelers - enshrined in verdant landscapes. daily bike treks in the surrounding area became the through-line of her life in the off season. Opening the hotel back up brings surprising questions and insights…Here's Laura: ===================================================== I wish to thank my listeners, and story-tellers. I hope this episode inspires you to become a contributor on this podcast. Send your voice, your story because it matters, and you need to be heard. This podcast moves in my life as a constant challenge to go deeper, look more closely – Episode 5's theme, in particular, has sent me careening into more questions than ever. It started with the question: “Does it matter?” Does my work matter to anyone other than me, and a few close people. Is what I do and how I do it Essential? What's my creative work's tangible value? I know every artist has these seasons of doubt, but…. this is different. The next part of this wave of painful questions came when I began reading : “So you want to talk about Race” by Ieoma Oluo. It's demanding that I pay a deeper kind of attention; turn toward and into the ache of uncomfortable, and sometimes painful new questions, new spaces. If I haven't been consciously part of the solution, haven't I been unconsciously part of the problem? That has to be true, and it's awful.

The content of the talk itself was great, but the really impressive part was that he had the audience fooled for the first five minutes that he was from Israel when he is in fact a native English speaker from Los Angeles! The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Dialect Coach - Joel Goldes. Joel Goldes has always enjoyed accents and has worked as a dialect coach for more than 25 years.  He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of California, Irvine, where part of his graduate training involved three years of daily Voice and Speech classes. It was here he learned how to break accents down systematically and that Joel first started to teach. His work as an actor took him to New York City, where he directed and produced theater, while dialect coaching productions in which he appeared. He realized he was happiest being responsible for this one aspect of a production and that led to his current career. Joel coached most of the cast of The Birth of a Nation, the acclaimed independent feature film, including Nate Parker and Armie Hammer, in historically  accurate 1830s Virginia accents. Since the production wasn't able to afford having a dialect coach on-set for filming, Joel prepped the cast via skype sessions, resulting in accurate accents at a fraction of the cost.   Joel coached the pilot episode of FOX TV's 24: Legacy, the reboot of the hit series 24, premiering following the Super Bowl. Joel coached foreign-born cast members in American accents, as well as coaching one actor into an accent from the Caucasus region. He continues to coach cast members via skype while they shoot in Atlanta.
