It’s been a while, but I’ve moved away from video back to the podcast for another great chat with Giles Pegram.Giles joined me to share his thoughts about what fundraisers should be doing to prepare for 2021. But most importantly, he spoke about a great new project that has produced some essential reading for us all – Fundraising in The Time of Covid-19, recently published by the Chartered Institute of Fundraising’s Supporter Experience special interest group. Giles and I met about ten days ago, but because of pressure of work, I’ve only just been able to sit down and get our chat edited. In the discussion, you’ll hear Giles talk about a very exciting webinar that the team behind the guide are presenting on the 25th of November at 2pm (GMT).So check your watch and calendar. If you still have time, you can sign up here. It’s free. If you’ve missed it, I’ll add a link to a recording as soon as one is available. In the guide, you’ll be introduced to six key principles necessary to deliver a great supporter experience:It’s about the donor not you.How to develop the right organisational mindset. Why your supporters still believe in your mission. And why they want to give. Why you shouldn’t assume that you are providing a great supporter experience. Why charities should invest in fundraisers. Why charities should invest in fundraising. What makes this guide so important – and useful – is that it goes far beyond just telling you to be nice to donors. It actually shows you how to do it. And how to do it well. It’s packed full of examples of how charities have developed and implemented these ideas for you to learn from. You can also use them to persuade a nervous senior management team (SMT) of the sense in investing in this approach. In the conversation you’ll hear us talk more about the guide, about the importance of continuing to fundraise during the current time and how our approach needs to change in response to the needs of supporters – as they evolve under the influence of the ever changing pandemic. We also discuss some of Bluefrog’s latest research findings.Apologies that the quality of the recording isn’t brilliant. It’s fine, but you’ll hear a few of those Zoom glitches that are a trademark of our daily working lives.
In this episode, Zack and Ryan sit down with franchising legend Gary Findley, CEO of Restoration 1 and bluefrog Plumbing & Drain. As a guru in both operations and franchise development, Gary talks through his opinions on the importance of operational excellence, Discovery Days, why the service industry is poised for explosive growth and his new book scheduled to hit shelves in Q1 2021.
With legacy fundraising growing at a terrific rate, this was an important time to be able to chat with one of the world's most experienced legacy fundraisers, Richard Radcliffe.Richard has been a fundraiser for over 40 years and for most of that time, his area of focus has been understanding why people leave gifts to charities in their wills. With 32,000 conversations with potential legators over four decades, Richard has a great understanding of what motivates people and what they want to achieve when writing their Will.In this conversation, Richard shares why people leave bequests and what changes he has noticed over the years, particularly as baby boomers have begun to seriously consider which charities they want to remember.Unsurprisingly, we discuss legacy giving in the time of Coronavirus, examining what is different now and what we should be doing in preparation for the end of the lockdown. We discuss the massive increase in legacy giving that we are currently experiencing and talk about the different types of Will that people write during their lives. You'll hear that we refer to the numbers released by FreeWills.co.uk over the last month that demonstrate an astounding level of generosity. Will writers were leaving an average of £60,000 to £70,000 a week to charity in their Wills in the early part of the year through the FreeWills website. Last week saw that figure reach almost £900,000. I'd recommend following @freewillscouk on Twitter for their updates. It's an astounding record of public generosity. We discuss some recent legacy campaigns. For those of you who don't recognise the phrase My Brother Cyril, it's a line from a British Red Cross ad that doesn't seem to be available online anymore, but you can read more about it here.We also take a look at innovation, particularly the use of digital channels and how we need to get messaging right for your audience, particularly when there is a large group of (predominantly younger people) who don't want to think about Will writing at all.If you'd like to contact Richard you can find his website here. I mention that the latest round of Bluefrog research on the impact of Coronavirus on giving in general is due for publication this week. I have simply run out of time to get that written up. I'll publish early next week instead. Apologies. If you missed it, the first study is available here. Drop me a line if you'd like to discuss findings sooner than that. You can also subscribe and listen on iTunes. If you enjoy the podcast, and had some time, a review would be really appreciated. Thank you.
Today, I'm sharing the first feedback on a Bluefrog research study aimed at finding out what UK donors need from charities during the time of the Coronavirus crisis. It should be emphasised that these are still early days and we expect donor attitudes to further evolve over the coming weeks.Back in February, we launched an independent study into attitudes to giving amongst donors to organisations working with people suffering from neurological disorders. In early March, as soon as we started to see the impact that the Coronavirus would have on us, we repurposed this study, widening the remit of the people we were speaking to and refocusing on the impact the virus would have on giving to charity. This has meant that we have been able to gain an understanding of how donors attitudes to giving has been influenced by Covid-19, the lockdown and the subsequent social fallout from job losses and social distancing policies as the impact of the virus has grown over time. This is a qualitative study. That means that rather than asking a large number of people a series of relatively shallow questions about giving to charity, we have long, in-depth conversations with a much smaller number of charity donors where we can explore in detail how they are feeling at the moment and the role charities have in their life. Each interview has three main components:What have been the main issues when thinking about the pandemic and how has thinking changed over the past few weeks? How has the pandemic influenced giving behaviour and how are they thinking about giving now, as compared to before the pandemic? What role, if any, has the work of charities had in their lives since the arrival of the of the pandemic? All interviews were undertaken by Amber Nathan, who has run Bluefrog's research function for the last 16 years. During that time she has spoken to thousands of donors from throughout the world, so she's pretty experienced at this type of work. Next stepsThe research will continue as we track how attitudes continue to change. If you are interested in finding out more or understanding how you might change your current fundraising strategy to engage and help your donors at this time, please drop me a line at things@bluefroglondon.com.
Today I have Denzil Smith us on Audiogyan. Denzil is an Indian film and stage actor, producer and is known for his stage and screen roles as a character actor. He has a long-standing association with both Motley Productions and PrimeTime Theatre. He has a huge body of work from working in Bollywood films, to theatre, from television to being a voice artist and more. Today we are here to discover his a relatively less know side which is love for music, especially Jazz. He has been host for jazz festivals, concerts at NCPA, Bluefrog and more… I am a Hindustani classical listener and I see a lot of similarities between Jazz and Hindustani Classical - which has to do with concepts of solo expression and the links between composition and improvisation. So I want to ask how would you define Jazz? What all components constitute Jazz? What according to you could be the reason why Jazz was so quickly adapted by Indians? Did it have anything to do with social position of Indian in 1920’s or just because talented people like Leon Abbey, Chic Chocolate and others who influenced other people at that time? Can you tell us something about Bombay Jazz Club? Who are few of the all-time-top Jazz Indian artists whose music is available online to buy or stream? The era from the 1930s to the 1950s is often called as the golden age of jazz in India. Did Jazz play any role in freedom struggle of India? What is the future of Jazz in India?
Redroom Sessions - An Electronic Music Podcast - Deep House, Techno, Chill, Disco
Stalvart John (Bengaluru, India) After taking the plunge into dance music, he found appreciation from audiences across the globe in no time thanks to his radio shows which include Frisky Radio (NY), Afterhours FM (SFO),Tenzi.fm (India), IMRTD Worldwide (NY), Powermix fm Radio (UK) and Radio Schizoid (Mumbai), 1worldtrance among many others. Stalvart's podcast "In a Mind Place" is quite popularin the Indian underground community. Not bound to genres, this podcast takes listeners on a journey through his current and old favorites. Known for his deeper take on dance music and his unconventional attitude, he’s contributed to the initial uprising of Kerala’s electronic music scene with a series of gigs in Club 1100 Ramada Resort, Ava Lounge Dream Hotel Cochin, Lagoon - Le Meridien, V-Bar Hilton Garden Inn (Trivandrum). In order to pursue his passion, Stalvart had to move out of Kerala when the music scene got abruptly cut short by the prohibition. After shifting base to Bangalore in early 2015, he started finding a new comfort zone in his Disco infused House & Techno, which has earned him regular showcases at some of the top venues like Humming Tree, Bluefrog & Social Offline. With way too many musical ideas to express, the jump from DJ to producer was imminent - with a debut release on one of India's finest labels "Wind Horse Records", he went on to release on German Label "Mind Field Records" on a compilation featuring the likes of like Paul Hartnoll (one half of the legendary Orbital), Norwell amidst other established names. His latest release on Wind Horse Records got great feedback from Richie Hawtin (Minus), Miss Nine (Armada), David Marston (Wolf + Lamp) and many more. Sahej Bakshi, a.k.a Dualist Inquiry, is first and foremost probably one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Aside from this he's also an extremely talented producer, guitarist and all round nice guy. Wait, did I already say that? Since returning to Delhi after completing his education at the Thornton Music School, L.A in March 2010, Sahej has been touring India extensively, in addition to being selected to perform at Berlin Music Week last year. Additionally, he was ranked #1 nationally in the Burn Sasha Tour remix competition (2010) and was the 2nd Runner Up in the MTV Submerge Ultimate Pro DJ Championship (2010), held at blueFROG in Mumbai. Most recently, Dualist Inquiry performed at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton UK, opening for hip-hop god DJ Shadow. Already tipped by many in the electronic music community to be a major presence for years to come, Dulaist Inquiry showed exactly what the fuss is all about on his debut EP Dualism which dropped on Audio Ashram earlier this year to crictial acclaim. Since then, there's been no looking back. Currently working on his debut LP due for release early next year and with remixes of Indian and foreign artists in the works, Sahej is completely focused on making music. In my mind, Dualist Inquiry will always stand out from the pack. A hugely talented producer, who uses his own style and personal obsessions to craft something beautifully unique... We're more than thrilled to have Dualist Inquiry open up the proceedings for us here at the Wild City with 25 minutes of completely original music, some of which has been specially crafted for this mix. If I was you, I'd file this next to Daft Punk, Justice and Ratatat. He's actually gone and set the bar pretty high with this one. If the standard of all the Wild City mixes to come in the future is anything like this, you're in for a treat! London based producer and DJ, Reso a.k.a Alex Melia is a man with a fascination for all things robotic and futuristic. His hybrid of hyper beats and tech-basslines sometimes feel more suited to a post-apocalyptic Tokyo than the contemporary concrete of most dubstep and we dig it. "A truly inspiring experience his music’s mech-mania induced synthesesia conjures images of neon-tinged neo-Japanese cityscapes, powerful hulking automatons and violent bassline machismo." Melia's much anticipated debut LP, ‘Tangram’ was released on Civil Music back in November 2012. As most had expected it shook some serious ground and garnered praise and support from the likes of Mixmag as album of the month, XLR8R, Guardian and MTV as well as from bass music personalities such as Liam Howlett, Skrillex, KOAN Sound, Rusko, Starkey and more. A landmark in the producer's so far pretty underground career, the 13-track LP showcased his flair for intricate programming and love for all things jazz (as a trained jazz drummer), electronica, bass and drums. In 2013, Reso sits at the peak of a new breed of electronic music producers and we're not the only ones to take notice. Within a relatively short space of time, Reso has remixed artists as diverse as Carl Cox, DJ Kentaro, Om Unit, KOAN Sound, Drop The Lime and Buraka Som Sistema. This weekend he'll be descending over Delhi for a exclusive show with Audio Aashram and Wild City at blueFROG and we're willing to put money on the fact that it's going to be an absolute banger. To give you a taste of what to expect he's made an exclusive mix for Wild City, which touches upon a variety of styles of bass music. From upfront and in-your-face tearout bangers right through to some drum and bass and more rolling, deeper vibes. A solid representation of his production style and musical influences. The mesmerising Sandunes is a Mumbai based producer and live act like no other. Having made her first forays into the world of live music playing keys for bands such as Something Relevant and Resonance, she got a taste for the stage very early on. With an ever present fear of Bollywood sessions as a money making prospect for the future, she drove herself to studying music production in London instead, hoping to take things to the 'next level'. On her return, with a fresh perspective and new found taste for all things UK underground she started to make ripples within Mumbai's bustling scene, playing her debut show supporting Dualist Inquiry at blueFROG. This is when we first heard of her. "With new tools and toys, a promising future in AV experiences, and a barrage of live and impromptu FX, Sandunes is bringing her studio on stage." Her Wild City mix rolls through gently swinging house and garage, before turning its attention to busier UK cuts, including recent favourites from Blawan, Bondax and MJ Cole. It climaxes on one of our favourite tracks of the year, Joy Orbison's take on Four Tet's 'Love Cry'. In the first of many of mixes from artists that reached out to us through our dropbox, we present to you Ashish Sachan a.k.a Hashback Hashish, an incredibly creative and persistently innovative producer and DJ, based in New Delhi. Refusing to be pigeonholed Ashish straddles the dark brooding purposeful world of techno alongside the mesmeric beauty of his deeper, more minimal tracks, while he also consistently churns out popular remixes. First and foremost the DJ, Hashbacks's style was formed at a residency at Rise, Perth. His ear for strong new music and sense of timing went on to help him play at clubs across India including blueFROG, TLR, The Zoo, Zook, Veda's, Cibo, Three Stories, Capitol, 1Boulevard, The 567 and many more. Most recently he opened up proceedings at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week 2012. The Wild City mix on hand isn't so easy to pin down, consistently bouncing between various house, techno, and electro sounds. One thing that shines through however, is the preference in detailed production. If it's a stomper you're after, you've got one.
