Institutional Control and Double Standards: Garment History Historically, members had the freedom to make their own garments from approved patterns or mark their own store-bought underwear. Over time, the patriarchal institution tightened its control, eventually establishing Beehive Clothing as the sole approved manufacturer and cutting off personal production avenues. Nancy Ross & Jessica Finnigan shared their survey findings with the LDS Church’s correlation research division, whose researchers were shocked by several revelations. Most notably, they were surprised to learn that the physical toll of wearing garments was the primary reason some women left the Church, completely flipping the standard narrative that members leave due to a loss of faith or taking offense. Researchers were also struck by the finding that poorly fitting garments caused severe psychological distress, leading some women to believe their bodies were simply “not good enough for God.” https://youtu.be/4ekThFV0xRQ Don't miss our other conversations Nancy Ross: https://gospeltangents.com/people/nancy-ross/ Copyright © 2026 Gospel Tangents All Rights Reserved CHAPTERS 0:00 How LDS Researchers Received the Survey on garments 5:55 Making Your Own Garments 13:59 Evolution of garments The authors also highlight a stark historical double standard regarding modifications: the Church readily accommodated military men by creating new khaki or colored garments for their uniforms, but when women requested design changes for health or physical comfort, their concerns were frequently dismissed as secular “vanity”. Century of Design Evolution: Garment History The segment traces the slow arc of garment modernization: 1923 Updates: The Church allowed stretchy, knitted fabrics for the first time, shortened sleeves to the elbow and legs to the knee, and replaced string ties with buttons. 1930s Internal Report: The church commissioned a report to gauge members’ desires for further updates. While many suggestions were adopted, the push for sleeveless garments was rejected. The Swimsuit Designer (1960s–1979): Church President David O. McKay consulted Rosemary Reid, a famous swimsuit designer, to help make garments look less like 19th-century “polygamy underwear.” Reid emphasized that women desperately needed two-piece options, a design the church eventually adopted and distributed in 1979 and 1980. Modern Tweaks (2010s–Present): The Church has introduced further modernizations like period garments, half-slips, and sleeveless options. However, the authors note that the constant minor “tweaking” of lengths and materials causes frustration for members who struggle to find a consistent fit when buying new garments. Shore Leave (Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS), S1 E15) was recommended by He/Him, who said: "Velcome to FANTASY PLANET!"Okay, I'll be honest. 90% of the reason I'm recommending this episode is to see Khaki's reaction to the beginning of Star Trek's long, and weirdly specific, obsession with stereotyping the Irish. Aside from that, I like it because this one of the most lighthearted of the early Trek episodes, coming right after the incredibly tense "Balance of Terror." Ultimately, there's no antagonist, no one is hurt (well, permanently anyway), and everyone has a good time. It's just a chance for the actors to have a few nice character bits as the episode explores the mystery of the planet itself, which every show needs.Oh, and Kirk wanting a massage from Spock is a COMPLETELY PLATONIC desire, I swear!Shore Leave first aired on November 17, 1966, written by Theodore Sturgeon, and directed by Robert SparrPart I: Spock hijacks the Enterprise to take his crippled former captain, Christopher Pike, to the forbidden world of Talos IV. He then demands a court martial, where he uses the events of The Cage to tell the tale of Pike's captivity on the planet years earlierThe Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook
Episode 122 John Brent McGhee On July 11, 2024, 42-year-old John Brent McGhee, who went by Brent, vanished in Leachville, Arkansas. He was last seen with a friend of his outside of a home that his wife was reportedly inside of with another man. She refused to let him inside and Brent apparently left before vanishing. The next day, Brent's wife went to a domestic violence shelter in Searcy, Arkansas, and then spent an additional 12 days at a mental health facility. It was reported that she showed little interest in helping to find her husband. According to police, she was agreed to take a polygraph test but then backed out. Many people believe that people within Brent's inner circle know more than they are saying. We are joined in this episode by Christy Hunter who is a case advocate for Brent. John Brent McGhee is described as a White male, standing 6ft4 and weighing 175 pounds. When he was last seen, he was wearing a light Blue t shirt, Khaki cargo shorts, and Hey Dude shoes. In the Cards (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9), S5 E25) was recommended by Shay, She/Her, saying:"I love this episode for what it represents. It is the breath of fresh air right before the shit hits the fan regarding the Dominion War. The plot is light-hearted and doesn't take itself too seriously. Even Weyoun gets a cute moment at the end. And after this episode, everything basically changes forever. You don't really go back to these low stakes romps around the station with Nog and Jake once Season 5 ends"Was also recommended by Lauren Rivers who said:When it aired, I didn't think much of this episode. It wasn't bad, by any means, but it has come to mean a lot more to me over the years as it is one of the episodes to feature the friendship between Jake and Nog front and center. In an effort to surprise his father, he and his best friend go through a series of events to acquire a Willie Mays rookie card. Unable to tell anyone why, they must do favors for the senior staff to get what they need. Along the way, they are even captured by the Dominion. What makes this episode so wonderful is not only does it focus on the great chemistry between Cirroc Lofton and Aron Eisenberg, but it also reminds us of how much little things people do can have a butterfly effect. Do they save the universe? No. But everyone in the episode comes out of it a little bit happier, and sometimes that makes all the difference for what comes next. On a personal note, Aron Eisenberg was one of the few celebrities who I felt I knew on a somewhat personal level, and he is one of the few celebrity deaths to hit me as hard as a member of my own family. Any chance to highlight the remarkable talent and spirit that Aron had is a huge positive for me.In the Cards first aired on June 9, 1997, written by story by Truly Barr Clark & Scott J. Neal, teleplay by Ronald D. Moore, and directed by Michael DornJake wants to give his father a present to cheer him up, a 1951 Willie Mays baseball card. He enlists Nog to help him obtain it, but they run into complications with a mysterious geneticist, Dr. Giger. I, Excretus (Star Trek: Lower Decks, S2 E8) was recommended by Chief Engineer Greg, who said: Going mildly mad with power, I wanted to suggest an episode myself. The first time I saw a Lower Decks cosplay, it was a Boimler and a Shaxs together. I had just started watching the show and conventions were beginning to come back in the post-Covid environment. And seeing a Boimler covered in Borg babies was such a delight to see. Lower Decks is the show made of deep cuts to obscure bits of Star Trek lore (Borg Maturation chambers) and also send up of the Franchise. This show is steeped in love for how silly the franchise is, while never getting jaded about it, and even fighting against the more jaded elements you can see when you get too close. This is an episode that openly admits to the workaholism of the Federation and uses it to great effect. It causes the trainer to break down because everyone gets perfect scores, yet Boimler's striving for that perfection. To paraphrase Homer Simpson, "Workahol. The cause of, and solution to, all life's problems."I, Excretus first aired on September 30, 2021, written by Ann Kim, and directed by Kim ArndtA consultant arrives on the U.S.S. Cause And Effect (Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG), S5 E18) was recommended by he/him, who said: All right, I realize we're supposed to recommend the... less than stellar episodes of Trek, but Cause and Effect is a classic TNG episode for good reason. While time travel episodes have been done to death in the franchise, the Groundhog Day loop in this one presents the crew with a genuine mystery that they have to puzzle out, which comes across with slowly dawning horror as they piece the puzzle together and realize that they may have no way out. Plus, it's got a literal banger of a teaser which has yet to be topped :)Cause And Effect first aired on March 23, 1992, written by Brannon Braga, and directed by Jonathan FrakesThe Enterprise becomes stuck in a time loop but the crew retain some memory of previous instances. About our Guest: Master Chief Hollingsworth, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, enlisted in the United States Navy on 27 October 1998 after graduating from Alcee Fortier High School in 1998. She attended Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois, and completed Cryptologic Technician Communications training in Pensacola, Florida. After seven years as a Cryptologic Technician Communications, she converted to Information Systems Technician in 2005. Her sea duty assignments include COMSEVENTHFLT permanently embarked aboard USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19), USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76), and USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77). Her shore assignments include NSGA Pensacola, NSGA Misawa, Commander Task Force 72 (two tours), NAS Pensacola, CID Unit Corry Station, and Naval Education and Training Command Supply Operations Chain. She was tried, tested, and accepted into the Chief's Mess on September 16, 2011. She is a graduate of the Senior Enlisted Academy Class 209 (Khaki) and CMC/COB Course #25070. She has earned her Information Warfare Specialist, Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, Aviation Warfare Specialist, and Master Training Specialist designations, and is also a Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt. Master Chief Hollingsworth holds an Associate degree in Business Administration, a Bachelor of Science in Human Services Management, and is currently completing a Master's degree in Organizational Leadership. Her personal awards include six Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, five Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and numerous unit and campaign awards. About the Episode: From this point forward, we're calling her Kedia. Damo opens the episode by telling the story of the first time he met Kedia on USS George H. W. Bush… during a disciplinary review board where she didn't hesitate to call him out. That moment sets the tone for a conversation about accountability, leadership, and the importance of practicing what you preach. The crew discusses the recent shooting involving an ROTC instructor at Old Dominion University and reflect on the loss of CSSN Angelina Resendiz, leading into a deeper conversation about responsibility, influence, and leading by example. Damon asks Kedia if she remembers her first 72 hours in the Navy, and the group talks about how those early experiences shape the leaders we become. Is it okay to follow your Sailors or your leadership on social media? Is there value in having an “anger translator”? What does lazy leadership actually look like? Damo asks Kedia how she balances being a Command Master Chief, a mother, and a graduate student working toward her Master's degree. The group also tackles a tough question… how do you respond when people use their struggles as an excuse for poor decisions? The conversation turns to Admiral Caudle's recently released CNOte 5, but the crew goes so deep into the first two principles they realize they could spend an entire episode on it alone. They also discuss what's happening aboard USS Gerald R. Ford, take a listener question about self-righteous leaders, and read some of Kedia's social media posts that sparked real conversation across the Fleet. Kedia shares how she spends the holidays with her Sailors, talks about betting on your leadership even when the risk is high, and reflects on how you know when it's time to retire. The episode closes with one of the most personal Do Better segments we've had, as she speaks on legacy, mentorship, and the responsibility of wearing the anchors. Inside Man (Star Trek: Voyager, S7 E6) was recommended by Rugger (They/them), who said: When people talk of this episode, they usually say it's a repeat of season 6's Pathfinder, where Barclay is clever but is ignored by Commander Harkins, so Barclay has to prove himself right. And it's two episodes after the Starfleet data stream was hacked by another party, to the detriment of Voyager.Plot-wise, they're right. But the plot isn't why I love this episode.Barclay instantly became one of my favourite Star Trek characters from his introduction as Lieutenant Broccoli, and Voyager made me love him even more. Barclay is the socially-inept, self-doubting genius, and, aside from when he merged with the Enterprise, he has remained in that role.In this episode, awkward Barclay cannot save the day with engineering or cleverness. All he can do is talk. It is a fantastic moment that serves as an excellent capstone on a side character's arc, who found confidence in his engineering, and, after 10 years, in his voice. Also, it is sheer delight to watch Dwight portray two vastly different characters with such zest. Dwight played Murdoch on the A-Team, and that versatility really shows in this episode.Inside Man first aired on November 8, 2000, written by Robert Doherty, and directed by Allan KroekerA hologram of Reginald Barclay is sent to Voyager, supposedly to implement a dangerous plan to bring them home; but the hologram has been tampered with by some Ferengi, who are trying to steal valuable Borg nanoprobes from Seven of Nine. The Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook

This is Ria from beautiful Phoenix, AZ USA where citrus trees abound and it is very easy to become an actual lemon stealing whore if one is not vigilant. If you recognized the little diddy earlier than you probably guessed the episode I'm recommending is TOS 320, the Way to Eden.I grew up on TOS and I always loved this episode without question and it was only within the last six to eight years that I was shocked to find out this is not considered to be a good episode? I wholeheartedly disagree. This is the original Star Trek musical, you have catchy songs that are great to sing along to, you've got purple-haired aliens, aliens with bizarro ears, you've got awesome hippie costumes, a shirtless Charles Napir, Chekov with an old flame. You've got Herberts, fabulous one-liners, you've got the tension between an increasingly mechanized and artificial society and our inherent human desire to remain close to nature. You've got a somewhat nerdy and uptight Captain Kirk, you've got Biblical references, Spock jamming on the Vulcan lyre and showing off his Vulcan hippie side. What is there not to love?So if you're not Herberts, man, and we reach, how bout a session on the way to Eden? It would sound!Do not give up your search for Eden. The Vulcan Hello (Star Trek: Discovery, S1 E1) was recommended by Advik Goel (he/him) - Add-vic Go-El, who said: This episode was actually my entry point into the Star Trek franchise, outside of the first of the Kelvin-verse movies, so it holds a place in my heart even if DIS as a whole doesn't relative to other series anymore.Beyond that, I think the debate over the Vulcan Hello and its merits has always fascinated me. The show lays it out as a debate between the Federation's principles of not being the people to fire the first shot in a potential conflict, and a signal which will ensure the Klingons' respect and prevent a war.I think there is something delightfully contradictory about Vulcan and Klingon cultural norms and signals being seen as oppositional to the Federation's doctrine, despite the Vulcan's being core members of the Federation. While Burnham's mutiny is clearly the wrong way to win an argument, I have to question why the characters meant to represent a more typical Federation viewpoint, like Georgiou, are unfamiliar or unwilling to entertain the merits of something like a Vulcan Hello. At least based on what the show reveals, T'Kumva would have been badly undermined if a Vulcan Hello was delivered rather than the perceived disrespect of diplomatic entreaty. The Vulcan Hello first aired on September 24, 2017, written by story by Bryan Fuller & Alex Kurtzman, teleplay by Akiva Goldsman & Bryan Fuller, and directed by David SemelWhile patrolling Federation space, the U.S.S. It is our favorite time of year: the 2026 Trend Report is here! Caroline, Taryn, and Liz are joined by the Ballard Designs Product Design Team—Hillary Park, and Will Turner—to break down exactly what is coming next in the world of interiors. The team reveals the surprising colors predicted to dominate (including "Green Glow" aka Slime and "Fresh Purple"), why "Builder Khaki" is making a nostalgic comeback, and the specific design aesthetic that bridges the gap between Gen Z and Boomers. They also discuss the move away from gray, the evolution of bouclé, and why your next gallery wall should feature "weird" personal art. Quick Decorating Takeaways: Brown is the New Black: Move over, cool grays. The team confirms that brown—from "Cocoa Powder" to "Builder Khaki"—is the dominant neutral for 2026. The trend of "Grandma Crafts" is huge, with needlepoint, embroidery, and paint-by-numbers becoming the ultimate way to unwind and decorate. Look for the "North Star": Celestial motifs are having a moment. Look for stars, moons, and zodiac themes in hardware, bedding, and fabrics as people seek direction and meaning in their homes.
