Vivian Host's rave credentials go deep. Much deeper than we realised in fact, and we've been friends with her for over a decade. There are several entry-points through which you could have discovered Vivian. Maybe it's her podcast, Rave to the Grave, where she interviews DJs, dancers and ‘freaks of all ages', from legendary house vocalist Barbara Tucker to performance art pervert Kevin Carpet. In Vivian's words, RTTG exists to document ‘a vital and resonant global (sub)culture that has often been ignored, dismissed, trivialised and poorly documented.' Amen!Or maybe you know Vivian through her journalism? A former editor-in-chief of both Thump and XLR8R, she also hosted Red Bull Radio's Peak Time show, once the internet's best resource for audio interviews with unsung heroes from countercultural scenes across the world.Or maybe it's simply through throwing parties and DJing under the name Star Eyes. After breaking through as a teenager Vivian spent the late ‘90s and early 2000s becoming one of the most prominent jungle DJs on the West Coast (she may have both been the first woman from LA regularly playing jungle at parties, and one of the first people full-stop to play UK garage in the States). After relocating to New York in 2004 she co-founded Trouble & Bass, a party and record label with an anything-goes approach to genres – far from common 20 years ago. T&B were also the first crew to book grime artists in New York. There are a lot of firsts in Vivian's catalogue. In this episode we naturally talk about the current state of play in LA, but we also go back to Vivian's formative years exploring the city's nitrous-fuelled punk and rave scenes, how she navigated the world of jungle as a teenager, San Francisco's ‘90s free parties, and being held up at gunpoint by dodgy club owners in New York's wild mid-2000s. It's Vivian's story, but it also doubles as an education on how raving evolved in the US throughout the 1990s and ‘00s. By the end of the interview we were equal parts inspired, envious and exhausted. As ever, if you enjoyed this episode of No Tags, do consider rating, reviewing and subscribing on your podcast app of choice, as it does really help. We'd also ask you to consider subscribing to our paid tier, which costs a humble £5 a month and helps us continue hosting, editing and transcribing extensive interviews like this one. For the Record is a conversation series where we speak with all manner of music heads — DJs, music journos, indie label captains, record shop owners, listening bar kingpins, et al — about their stories + the music that makes them. As a bassist in the band Moot back in early-'80s NYC, Bruce Tantum's formative years were spent soaking up club culture in such hallowed halls as Mudd Club, Pyramid and Danceteria. Later in the decade, his time spent in those downtown dance dens, and those that that followed, inspired him to get step into the DJ booth — and over the ensuing years, he's played at pretty much any club willing to have him, as well as at more dingy basement parties than he can remember. For over two decades, Bruce has served as a music journalist, toiling for Time Out NY (where he served as the longtime Clubs editor), Resident Advisor, Red Bull Music Academy, XLR8R, Mixmag and more. He currently holds it down as North American editor of DJ Mag, while still heeding the call of the decks for the occasional night of record-spinning fun. Over the last 20+ years, Shawn Reynaldo has been a DJ, record label owner, radio station manager, journalist and the editor-in-chief of XLR8R magazine. He's a one-time staple of the San Francisco indie rock scene, a former promoter of tropical bass and UK funky parties, and also one of the pre-eminent critics writing about house and techno for Pitchfork, Spin, NPR and beyond. Velocity Press just released Shawn's first book, First Floor Volume 1, which collects the spiciest thinkpieces and hot takes on electronic music and culture that he's penned over the last couple years in his popular First Floor weekly newsletter. To celebrate the kick-off of his North American book tour, we talk about how DJ culture has changed over the last two decades, his view on music writing, his spicy takes on the best and worst sonic trends, the current club scene in Barcelona (where he's based), sober raving, and the time he saw Claire Danes eat shit at Berghain. Is music journalism in as bad a place as people say it is? I've certainly said it... really quite a lot. Maybe to the extent that I've been a bit unfair on the overall quality of music writing today, and having a total ban on music writers on the show was also possibly taking things a bit too far. Today though, the ban is lifted. Shawn Reynaldo is a former editor of XLR8R, and contributor to many of the august music publications we all love to hate, but now operates mostly out of his First Floor platform on Substack. He's just released a book entitled First Floor Vol 1, and we spend most of this week's episode digging into some of the issues covered in it. These include... streaming platforms, musical gatekeepers, media snobbery, the commercialisation of dance music, local scenes, and a lot more meaty stuff besides. I love this sort of conversation, and you're definitely going to enjoy listening to it. If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! There are two tiers - "Solidarity" for $4 a month, which features regular bonus podcasts and extra content. And "Musicality" which for a mere $10 a month gets you all the music we release on Hotflush and affiliate labels AND other music too, some of which never comes out anywhere else. Plus there's also a private area for Patreon supporters in the Hotflush Discord Server... but anyone can join the conversation there in the public channels, so please do! PHIDIPPUS Denver,Co Drum and Bass https://www.phidippusmusic.com/ BIO Eric Salazar played his first instrument, the autoharp, as a very small child. By 1985 he joined a break dancing troop and had the chance to pop-lock. Some of the break dancing tapes he listened to were instrumental and those pieces inspired him to search for a sound that was rhythm heavy and lacking in vocals. He was sated by the recordings of Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream and The Art of Noise. By 1990, he got his hands on an Ensoniq EPS-16+ sampling workstation and proceeded to make bad music. The 1990s would also bring about rave culture and with it beats of all varieties. Eric would try to emulate these artists and by 1997, he had actually started making some acceptable music using a Power PC, Emagic Logic Audio and the Ensoniq. He sought to combine all his influences under the name Emptyhead and his efforts culminated in a CD EP entitled "Penitence" which he burned and hand labeled to be sold in local record shops. The following year he did the same thing with a CD EP etitled "Voluptuous". He sent it out and a copy ended up in the offices of Peter Gabriel's record label, Real World. The folks at Real World listened to it in the office while writing memos. Still it took until the following year and remixes for New Vision Recordings and other labels in the UK to solidify his reputation. By 2000, Mercedes Automotive, Smirnoff Vodka and other companies licensed Eric's music to promote their products. Eric would launch “New Vision America”, a record label in 2002. After three singles were released, the label died a quiet death. Despite this failure, Eric pressed on and would go on to score the best-selling video game, "Belle's Beauty Boutique”. What? In 2008 Eric released the full length CD, "ES: When I was Emptyhead - 1997-2007." The CD would garner airplay in major markets and commendations from the press, including publications like Knowledge and XLR8R. By 2010 Eric started remixing the works of major artists such as The B-52s, Summer Channel and Information Society. Mental illness took hold in 2012 and as therapy Eric started producing music influenced by the drum & bass scene. Eric's efforts culminated in the release of albums “170.1”, “170.2”, “170.3”,"170.4" and "170.5" under the moniker Phidippus in the years spanning 2020 to 2022. Offerings from these albums have made their way onto Nahual Records and Full Send DnB as well as others. With half a million plays on Soundcloud and thousands more on other platforms, Eric has established himself as a major artist in the electronic music scene. When asked what kind of music he makes, Eric answers blithely, "intelligent"...

Bouncing between high-energy DJ mixes and hypnotic original live sets, QRTR has shared the stage with the likes of Tokimonsta, Daedelus, Booka Shade, and Tiga, to name a few. While her Brooklyn home base will always be número um, QRTR has toured internationally, performing in Portuguese open air clubs and smoky Parisian lounges. Though her original tracks do not place within a specific genre, DJ Mag describes QRTR's music as a meeting between “art house film composer and basement rave.” QRTR's sophomore album, infina ad nausea, released on LA-based record label Dome of Doom is a treasure trove of hypnotic grooves that vortex around the many intricacies of her experimental approach and leave a testament to her growth as an artist. Dubbed as an "euphoric trip through the mind" by Pitchfork, the album has also received support from BBC Radio 6's Tom Ravenscroft, The Wire Magazine (UK), Paste Magazine, XLR8R, Bandcamp Daily and more. Extensive years working in the film world has shaped her music sonically and conceptually, adding a tonality and design to her works that is rare in dance music. His label has always stood for originality and diversity and as well as his own unique productions having a respected platform from which to propel him he has also given sanctuary to other like-minded artists such as D&S, Franco Cinelli and Caim. It is however Julian that has taken the reins for GIRADA010. Spread over 2×12” ‘Break Even' is an impressive body of work that spans a broad range of styles as followers of Perez's work will have come to expect. The double 12” which is also available as NFT kicks off Side A the spacey breaks of ‘Sweentro' closely followed by the lushness of ‘Facts' and brooding ‘Revelation'. With there being three tracks on Side A it is to be expected that one of these tracks will be a tad shorter than the others. Flipping over and Side B treads more towards peak time vibes with ‘Eveileb'. The pumping kick drum and menacing synth lines encounter a sweet contrast by way of the retro synth pads. The pressure drops somewhat to deep house territory on ‘Versatile' and remains there come the start of Side C with ‘Energy Fever'. The low-slung conga laden groover is a sublime piece of dream house more than capable of entrancing a dancefloor. Closing out Side C is ‘CSO All The Way', a shimmering piece of cosmic breaks and the theme creeps over onto the sublime D1 banger ‘Beyond Existence'. Rounding out the landmark GIRADA010 is the stunning ‘Drowned In Faith (Love & Light) and the title could not be more fitting. " -Review by Trommel. ====

Wendel Patrick has been referred to as “David Foster Wallace reincarnated as a sound engineer” by Urbanite Magazine and as “wildly talented” by the Baltimore Sun. He has been referred to by XLR8R magazine as “a hip-hop producer that could easily make any fan of Squarepusher, Boards of Canada, or Madlib flip out.” The alter-ego of classical and jazz pianist Kevin Gift, Wendel Patrick has made a name for himself internationally as a music producer of remarkable vision, skill and talent. His five albums: Sound, Forthcoming, JDWP, Passage, and Travel were all produced without the use of sampling, with Patrick playing every note of every instrument. What is perhaps most astounding and perplexing to listeners is that there are actually no instruments…he crafts all of the instruments, and plays every note, electronically. Equally at home performing on stage with his band, behind two turntables, beatboxing, improvising, or playing a Mozart Concerto on stage with orchestra, Wendel Patrick has toured Europe on several occasions and performed throughout the world with renowned spoken word artist and poet Ursula Rucker (The Roots, 4 Hero). In 2014, Wendel Patrick traveled to Australia as a guest lecturer, speaking about music production and entrepreneurship in the arts at The Australian Institute of Music in both Sydney and Melbourne. In 2011, Wendel Patrick co-founded the Baltimore Boom Bap Society, with Erik Spangler (DJ Dubble8) that performs monthly improvised hip hop shows with hand picked musicians and emcees. The group's collaborative performance with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra of Igor Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale was recently named “Best Mesmerizing Performance of 2016” by Baltimore Magazine. Wendel Patrick's music has also been heard across the country on NPR stations, most notably on Out of the Blocks, an award winning radio documentary program he co-produces with radio producer Aaron Henkin for  NPR affiliate WYPR that has been featured by the Third Coast International Audio Festival and Hearing Voices as well as on the BBC. Recent performances included a new collaboration between the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Boom Bap Society, on which Patrick's orchestral compositions were performed. An avid photographer and videographer, his photography has been exhibited in several art galleries including the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Ralph Arnold Gallery in Chicago. Patrick shoots all of the accompanying documentary photography and videography for Out of the Blocks . Wendel Patrick/Kevin Gift majored in both music and political science at Emory University and earned his M.M. in Piano Performance as a scholarship student at the Northwestern University School of Music in Evanston Illinois. Please welcome our next guest @tour-maubourg If there are producers who create an album every ten years and those who produce one track per day, Tour-Maubourg is with no doubts part of the second family. His music, a subtle synthesis of jazz and house, has never ceased to be praised by his peers and the public. And it’s not for nothing that Trax Magazine described him as « one of the most promising producers of the French house scene » after the release of his first EP. « Déclaration Préalable à l’Embauche » went out in 2017 on Pont Neuf Records. This first maxi is unanimous and goes sold out in just afew weeks. The same year, the Brussels native expatriated in Paris released a 2nd EP on Folamour’s imprint FHUO. In 2018, Tour-Maubourg releases a new opus in collaboration with Armless Kid on FINA before getting back on Pont Neuf with « Solitude Collective », his 3rd solo EP which confirms all the expectations. « An artist that has already drawn attention for being one to watch in the French scene » wrote XLR8R. Trax Magazine persists by speaking of a « jazzy house phenomenon ».

2021 has seen a rise of New York via Vermont producer Aspetuck, who's been having a phenomenal string of releases on labels like Lagaffe Tales, A Friend In Need, and XLR8R. In just a few weeks, the string continues, and the Aspetuck story will get 'a main chapter' in the form of his sophomore album 'The Bees Came Back.' The album highlights the producer's vast musical taste and attention to complex rhythms. The versatility of Aspetuck's productions has a common denominator - quality, which perfectly reflects in the mix Aspetuck made for us. Aspetuck patiently develops the storyline from cosmic Ambient and Electronica to Deep House to rumbling Techno, Acid, and Breaks during this two-hour journey. This type of mix has no expiration date; it's storytelling in its most refined form. For Episode 10, Host Piper Greenbaum interviews sound engineer and music producer Wendel Patrick. Wendel Patrick has been referred to as "David Foster Wallace reincarnated as a sound engineer" by Urbanite Magazine and as "wildly talented" by the Baltimore Sun. He has been referred to by XLR8R magazine as "a hip-hop producer that could easily make any fan of Squarepusher, Boards of Canada, or Madlib flip out." The alter-ego of classical and jazz pianist Kevin Gift, Wendel Patrick is rapidly making a name for himself as a producer to be recognized. His five albums, Sound:, Forthcoming, JDWP, Passage, and Travel were all produced without the use of sampling, with Patrick playing every note of every instrument. What is perhaps most astounding and perplexing to listeners is that there are actually no instruments...he crafts all of the instruments, and every note, electronically. Seguono altre release con Love Fever, Crostown Rebels, Kaluki Music, Abode, Bedrock Records, mixtape e radio show su i-D, Dazed And Confused, Thump, BBC Radio 1 e altri. Subscribers to this podcast may be used to the various DJ mixes we’ve been dropping on this channel, and those are going to continue, but today we’ve got something special - we'll talk to DJ Tomas's long time friend and colleague Star Eyes, a.k.a. Vivian Host, an accomplished DJ, producer, music journalist, radio host and podcaster in her own right. DJ Tomas met Vivian in LA in the early '90s around the same time that Umoja Hi-Fi formed. Tomas booked Star Eyes for one of her first gigs at, an after-hours event at Nova Express cafe, he wrote and edited with her at URB and XLR8R magazines, and watched her career flourish at Red Music Music in New York. Speaking of Red Bull, Vivian's New York party crew Trouble & Bass won the 2013 Red Bull Culture Clash event -- a true underdog upset, besting Max Glazer's Federation Sound, Que Bajo and hip-hop producer Just Blaze. Since then, she's only continued to rise. Dubbed "Brooklyn's Queen of Heavy Bass," hear how Vivian discovered reggae sound system culture, became a pioneering US drum & bass DJ, and forged a successful music journalism career along the way.

New Dawn Records were formed in 1996, facilitating some initial low key releases mainly as a way to help some local friends have their music heard.   The main activity began from 2000 when they signed the hip hop crew Belles in Monica, spearheaded by producer Kruze, and helped in their development and recording leading to the group's only album release “Resistance is Futile” in 2002.  The affiliated singles “Y'All Under Surveillance”, “Meltdown” and “What D'Ya Need” were released on vinyl that year and received international radio airplay including key supporters such as Steve Lamacq on BBC Radio 1's flagship Evening Sessions show.   The singles were particularly well supported in the clubs at the time which led to high entries on DJ Magazine's specialist charts while the group also featured in international publications including Hip Hop Connection, Billboard, Blues & soul, XLR8R and Hip Hop DX.   Some of their music was also used for a number of Xtreme Sports programmes and small independent film.   The group's final single release was “Smoke Filled Rooms” in 2003   During this period, the label looked to expand their operation and bring additional dynamics to their overall organization.  With a group of fcolleagues, the concept of “Urban Elite” was conceived, originally to build a community of those active in different artforms such as film, photography, music, street art, the aim being to cross collaborate on various projects.   Over time, Urban Elite's activity centred on film / documentary production, music production and music promotions.

A day late this month after some issues with the recording but finally managed to sort it out. Space Safari 008 is from the open air U.R. Art here in LA a couple days ago and was an incredible event. Vibe was stellar and the love and attention to detail in curating such a great event is obvious. Big thanks to everyone that was there and to John and the whole crew from U.R. and XLR8R for an epic day. Enjoy the journey.

Cosmic dust is dust which exists in outer space. Most cosmic dust particles are between a few molecules to 0.1 µm in size. A smaller fraction of all dust in space consists of larger refractory minerals that condensed as matter left the stars. It is called “stardust” and is included in a separate section below. The dust density in the local interstellar medium of the Local Bubble is approximately 10−6 × dust grain/m3 with each grain having a mass of approximately 10−17 kg. Cosmic dust can be further distinguished by its astronomical location: intergalactic dust, interstellar dust, interplanetary dust (such as in the zodiacal cloud) and circumplanetary dust (such as in a planetary ring). In the Solar System, interplanetary dust causes the zodiacal light. Sources of Solar System dust include comet dust, asteroidal dust, dust from the Kuiper belt, and interstellar dust passing through the Solar System. The terminology has no specific application for describing materials found on the planet Earth except for dust that has demonstrably fallen to Earth. By one estimate, as much as 40,000 tons of cosmic dust reaches the Earth’s surface every year. In October 2011, scientists reported that cosmic dust contains complex organic matter (“amorphous organic solids with a mixed aromatic–aliphatic structure”) that could be created naturally, and rapidly, by stars. On August 14, 2014, scientists announced the collection of possible interstellar dust particles from the Stardust spacecraft since returning to Earth in 2006. Hideout Sessions - Episode 113 It feels like an absolute age since I've put a show out, so apologies for not quite squeezing one into May. I was on me holidays so was a little distracted. Anyway, that does mean I'll be dropping a couple this month, so every cloud. Anyway, music! This episode I have trawled through a mountain of promo and selected a distintcly beats driven show, filled with lush electronica and a decent portion of twisted up disco. You gonna love it! As a proud self-confessed music junkie, it's always exciting to meet a fellow addict to fill in the blanks of discovery. My first clue should have been Daniel's informative reviews on the website of Other Music, an esteemed record store located in lower Manhattan, where he is an employee. Sound unheard, I could read one of his reviews and purchase a new release based solely on his recommendation. This year's Shabazz Palaces and Neneh Cherry albums being standout examples. Obviously, I had to bring him on the show. It wasn't until I researched him that found out Daniel is a DJ, artist, poet, musician and more. Instead of only discussing 10 of his favorite albums of 2014, I was interested in hearing about his artistic career. It's the conversation that couldn't be contained within an hour. Enjoy! Visit Daniel on Tumblr: www.1stdark.tumblr.com Other Music: www.othermusic.com   Talk Music Talk Playlist/007: Daniel Givens Edition   This week's TMT Spotify playlist is twice the bang! Two exciting playlists in one with the DNA of guest Daniel Givens running through both. The first half features 9 selections from Daniel's favorite albums of 2014; he chose the albums, I cherry-picked the songs (see list below). Since Daniel's quite the accomplished musician himself, the second half of the playlist is a TMT exclusive Best Of---per yours truly. Daniel's musical palette goes from trippy jazz excursions to moody dub and electronica. My advice? After listening to the interview, find a private place with some headphones and enter the aural eclipse from Daniel Givens' mind. Hideout Sessions - Episode 88 My name is Ross Wakefield and I am very, very, VERY sorry. It's been six weeks since my last confession, I mean podcast…anyway you get my drift. The only excuse I can offer is that life got on top of me for a while and my lack of studio and nomadic existence, resulted in some appalling slackness. I will be going to bed without any pudding indefinitely and I WILL make it up to you. That's a promise! Anyway, I hope the selection goes someway to staying your outrage and after 2hrs of the best new music around, I hope you'll start to forgive me. Thanks for your patience and shouts out to everyone that got in touch and hounded me into life. Love you loads and see you in a couple of weeks, Ross xx P.S. London based producer and DJ, Reso a.k.a Alex Melia is a man with a fascination for all things robotic and futuristic. His hybrid of hyper beats and tech-basslines sometimes feel more suited to a post-apocalyptic Tokyo than the contemporary concrete of most dubstep and we dig it. "A truly inspiring experience his music’s mech-mania induced synthesesia conjures images of neon-tinged neo-Japanese cityscapes, powerful hulking automatons and violent bassline machismo." Melia's much anticipated debut LP, ‘Tangram’ was released on Civil Music back in November 2012. As most had expected it shook some serious ground and garnered praise and support from the likes of Mixmag as album of the month, XLR8R, Guardian and MTV as well as from bass music personalities such as Liam Howlett, Skrillex, KOAN Sound, Rusko, Starkey and more. A landmark in the producer's so far pretty underground career, the 13-track LP showcased his flair for intricate programming and love for all things jazz (as a trained jazz drummer), electronica, bass and drums. In 2013, Reso sits at the peak of a new breed of electronic music producers and we're not the only ones to take notice. Within a relatively short space of time, Reso has remixed artists as diverse as Carl Cox, DJ Kentaro, Om Unit, KOAN Sound, Drop The Lime and Buraka Som Sistema. This weekend he'll be descending over Delhi for a exclusive show with Audio Aashram and Wild City at blueFROG and we're willing to put money on the fact that it's going to be an absolute banger. To give you a taste of what to expect he's made an exclusive mix for Wild City, which touches upon a variety of styles of bass music. From upfront and in-your-face tearout bangers right through to some drum and bass and more rolling, deeper vibes. A solid representation of his production style and musical influences. In case I didn't explicitly state this before, Headphone Commute is proud to be one of the Media Partner's at this year’s Decibel Festival in Seattle. Yep, little 'ol HC is right up there along with XLR8R, Beatport, Resident Advisor, and Red Bull Music Academy. To celebrate this honor, and build up the anticipation for the upcoming event, I decided to put together this mix, featuring some of my favorite artists which will be performing at Decibel. I kept the selection mostly on the ambient and modern classical side, showcasing almost all of the performers from the upcoming OPTICAL audiovisual series. I hope this will give you a taste of what’s to come. I know I'll be listening to this mix on my flight to Seattle! See you there! Though now splitting her time between Miami and Brooklyn, XLR8R’s “artist to watch” Jubilee will always be Brooklyn’s bass sweetheart. Known for her rambunctious combination of upfront bass music, UK house, and tropical flavors, she has become a surefire remedy for ailing dancefloors around the globe. Co-opting her name from the X-Men character who shot fireworks out of her hands, Jubilee works similar magic when she steps into the DJ booth.

But she’s also simply Jess, the one-time South Florida raver who grew up obsessively listening to Miami bass on the radio and dancing the night away at underground breaks parties. After making the move to NYC, she quickly infiltrated the DJ circuit and began turning heads with her knowledge of all things bass. It’s the sweet mix of underground bass and tropical vibes that brings Jubilee from clubs and warehouse parties to the comfort of your own home. Her radio show Fireworks, on both Brooklyn Radio and Electric Soundstage (iHeartRadio’s new electronic station), continuously features fellow global producers such as Sinden, Bok Bok, Mike Q, and Star Eyes. Prior to Fireworks, she has DJed on East Village Radio and put together well received guest mixes for “The Mix Up” on Australia’s Triple J Radio and XLR8R Magazine’s esteemed podcast series. You can also find Jubilee on the production end of things as one half of Bassanovva, a project with Canadian producer Grahmzilla (previously of Thunderheist). The duo’s debut EP, Chicken Lover, dropped this past November on Sinden’s Grizzly label.

Be sure to also check out her Paypur EP with Udachi for the Nightshifters label, an imprint she runs with Jason Forrest (a.k.a. Dj Donna Summer). These days we have also seen official Jubilee remixes for some of the most buzzed about artists- Cubic Zirconia (with Proper Villians), Canblaster, and Creep (with Star Eyes). As if that’s not enough, Jubilee also puts on the infamous Flashing Lights party (with Nick Catchdubs and DJ Ayres); named Best New Party at the Paper Magazine 2010 Nightlife Awards.

Critical recognition is no stranger to Jess- in 2009, Sasha Frere-Jones invited her to perform at the New Yorker Festival—she was the only DJ on the bill. Jubilee regularly DJs throughout the US and Europe, and you will be sure to see a lot more of her bass-loaded fireworks on both sides of the Atlantic.

Brooklyn Queen of Heavy Bass Star Eyes is known for throwing down raw, dirty underground tracks, from grime bangers to ghetto house, Miami bass classics to speaker-rattling dubstep stormers. Spinning for more than 15 years, this veteran bad girl has always loved low-end—she was one of first female drum & bass DJs in the US (and a resident of S.F.’s long-running Eklektic night) as well as half of the Syrup Girls (called “New York’s best-kept secret” by New Yorker music critic Sasha Frere-Jones). Star Eyes has played all over the world, from the Vans Warped Tour to Sonar Festival, from London’s famed Fabric to Berlin squats, from Cape Town to Burning Man, and opened for such acts as Diplo, Moby, AFI, The XX, The Streets, and Girl Talk. In 2006, Drop the Lime and Star Eyes founded the now world-famous Trouble & Bass crew/record label, which also includes AC Slater, The Captain, and affiliates worldwide. In June 2009, the Trouble & Bass label released her first EP, Disappear, featuring a mix of goth and rave influences whipped into a style she calls “haunted house.” Since then she has unleashed more tracks for the label, including "Cry Baby," her White Gloves EP, and her forthcoming The Night EP (October/November 2011). She has also released remixes for Michna, Creep, Hussle Club, Hanuman, Riviera, Lil’ Tal, and Funerals, as well as several goth/industrial mixes (in conjunction with Psychic TV and Death in June, respectively) for Brooklyn clothing company Mishka NYC, whom she's sponsored by. Star Eyes vocals also appear on tracks by John B (Beta Recordings) and Passions (Kitsuné), and she is the former editor-in-chief of the music magazine XLR8R.

Joel Burges and Wayne Marshall, MIT’s Mellon Fellows in the Humanities (2009-11), will contribute to the rethinking of media studies at MIT by taking up the shared metaphor of fashion—the fashionable, the old-fashioned, the re-fashioned. Burges will talk about the turn away from the digital in contemporary cinema, particularly the case of Fantastic Mr. Fox, in an attempt to think about the uneven development of media over time. Marshall will discuss how popular but privatized platforms like Facebook and YouTube, pop culture fashion—and the negotiable refashionability of both—present crucial challenges to the study of media today. Joel Burges works at the intersection of literary studies, critical studies, and media studies. His first book, which is in progress, is entitled The Uses of Obsolescence; it considers the fate of historical thinking in the media of late modernity, especially literature and cinema. His second book, in its very early stages, is called Fiction after TV; it considers how a major mode of imaginative processing—fiction—is altered by the introduction of TV to post-1945 mediascapes. Wayne Marshall is an ethnomusicologist, blogger (wayneandwax.com), and DJ, specializing in the musical and cultural production of the Caribbean and the Americas, and their circulation in the wider world. Currently a Mellon Fellow at MIT, he’s writing a book on music, social media, and digital youth culture. He co-edited and contributed to Reggaeton (Duke 2009) and has published in journals such as Popular Music and Callaloo while writing for popular outlets like XLR8R, The Wire, and the Boston Phoenix.

The pair, who have worked together behind the scenes for fifteen years have brought their joint efforts into the public eye with this new DJ duo, which debuted at this years Burning Man festival.Christopher laughs "I've been noticing there's a lot of DJs working in pairs lately. I've often thought it would be nice to have a wingman up there, although in this case, it's actually a wingwoman. I don't know of any other mixed sex DJ duos, let alone any husband and wife teams, so I think we're definitely breaking some new ground here".Christopher continues "Mr + Mrs Smith' is an opportunity for me to play music that I couldn't normally incorporate into my trance sets".So what is the sound? "I would describe it as electro house meets techno" says Sara. "But we'll play any genre, we don't care what it is as long as it's tough and sexy, with a groove".One thing is for certain, dance music's newest Dj duo has everyone talking..."Mr Smith" (AKA Christopher Lawrence) needs no introduction. One of the World's leading dance music talents, Christopher has received numerous awards and accolades. Winner of "Best American DJ" at the IDMA's, Christopher is also a recent recipient of the "Best DJ" at both the Dancestar US Awards and Los Angeles Music Awards. A regular at Melbourne's gay clubs in the eighties ("the only places you could hear good dance music in Australia"), she worked in the nightclub industry, before moving to London in the early nineties to work at Tower Records dance department. She was active in the London rave scene of the early nineties, before moving to Los Angeles, where she met "Mr Smith" (AKA Christopher Lawrence, a struggling bedroom DJ) and they were married shortly after. Continuing her career in dance music, Sara worked for several years for German techno star Sven Vath at the LA office of his labels Eye Q Music / Harthouse before becoming the Los Angeles editor of respected US electronic music mag XLR8R. It was also in the late nineties that Sara formed Monster Media, a PR and management company specializing in dance music, under which she managed the careers of artists including husband Christopher Lawrence, a position she continues to this day.
