BV. Doshi, once said, “A house is a grain, like a small sapling in the bio-diverse wild forest”. I wonder what a public space like a temple, a monument, museum, a park, an industrial zone, a 80 floor office tower or a man made landscape is? Lets explore more about architecture and history in this 3 part series called, “An insert into the history”. This series is brought to you by, The Drawing Board, with whom I had partnered last year. The Drawing Board is an international architecture platform based in India where students can test their understanding and skills in shaping the way communities live and thrive while preserving local heritage. TDB has been actively running Architecture competition for under graduate students since 2016. It is conceptualised by Mindspace Architects and Rohan Builders. This year, the theme is to redesign the existing Badami archaeological museum, in Karnataka. Submission deadline is 9th Oct 2023. More details in the show notes and thedrawingboard.in We begin this series with Ar. Prashant Pole. Prashant has a long and illustrious career that has spanned over three decades. His journey started with Naksha Architects in Bengaluru. He established his own firm, Genesis Architects in 1994 and has worked on single residences, apartments, offices, hotels and institutional buildings. Over these years, he has also been a visiting faculty at MCE Hassan, BIT Bangalore, SIT Tumkur, and USD Mysore. Aside from teaching, he has also been evaluating architecture design as a juror at various architecture schools in and around Bengaluru. We'll be discussing what goes into making a museum. Questions What is the museum according to you? Why do we need them? Are there any special characteristics when it comes to Museum's architecture? How can we optimise space to accommodate a wide range of exhibits while maintaining a seamless visitor experience? (Considering people coming from diverse background, language, ethnicity, abilities and more) Accessibility, sustainability, security, are few common and must have things for any architecture, what are few other guidelines when it comes to a place like Museum? Which are the famous museums in India and why? Since this year's theme is redesign the existing Badami archaeological museum, how can we approach integrating the cultural diversity and historical significance of Badami into the design of a museum, ensuring it resonates with both local and international visitors? We say that “any place to be built should be built with the material found in 5KMs or it's radius”. How true is it and why? How do you leverage local materials and craftsmanship to create a distinctive architectural identity for the museum, and what challenges might arise in this context? Lighting and climate control are crucial factors in preserving the artifacts. How can we go about creating and ideal environment yet ensuring it's sustainable? We can consider Badami or any other museum (located in the such setup in India) What suggestions would you give those who wish to specialise in designing museums? Any extra attention in the context of Bandami museum? RFI English journalist (and Sound Kitchen co-host) Paul Myers was there, and wrote an article about Wimbledon traditions, “Strawberries and cream, grass and whites ... where else but Wimbledon?” You were to send in the answer to this question: Who is behind the strawberry and cream dish – who invented it, or first put the two together – at least, according to legend. The answer is, to quote Paul's article: “… the theory goes that the combination became synonymous with the competition because spectators at the inaugural final were offered the pairing as the event fell at the high point of the strawberry season. And that mix was chosen because Cardinal Thomas Wolsey – a mover and a shaker in the court of King Henry VIII – served strawberries and cream together at a banquet for the king in 1509.”In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question, suggested by Jayanta Chakrabarty from New Delhi, India: “What have you done that made someone happy?”Do you have a bonus question idea? Send it to us! The winners are: RFI Listeners Club member Nasyr Muhammad from Katsina State, Nigeria. It's been named the “Namuli horseshoe bat” after its principal habitat: Mount Namuli, which is Mozambique's second-highest peak. You were to re-read Ryan's article and answer this question: where else have the Namuli horseshoe bats been spotted? The answer is, as Ryan Truscott wrote: “They've been recorded on the Nyika plateau in northern Malawi, and in southern Tanzania.”By the way, they're called “horseshoe bats” for the horseshoe-shaped structures on their faces, which are used for echolocating – or sending out soundwaves – to help them to navigate or catch flying insects. They are roughly the size of sparrows. It has been a topsy-turvy week for the global equity markets, having to deal with the Evergrande crisis in China. Will this event prove to be a catalyst triggering a market correction? Or is the worst over? In this exclusive interview with Puneet Wadhwa, Kotak Mahindra AMC Managing Director Nilesh Shah answers all these questions. Edited excerpts: Concerns around China's Evergrande crisis over now? Evergrande more of a China problem than a global one It's China's ‘Lehman Brothers moment' No global markets contagion, only a temporary setback Some impact: Real estate slowdown, metal stocks to be hit Will Evergrande ghost haunt global financial markets again? Difficult to predict market sentiment Events like Evergrande can act as a catalyst for market correction Where will Nifty be after 6 months – 15,000 or 20,000? Indian markets are fairly valued Corporate results good, Covid cases dropping, ample money flowing Evergrande crisis may force investors to look at India as alternative to China Biggest risk to markets: surplus liquidity, inflation or retail investor frenzy? None of these are risks People sceptical about markets, but still want to invest Indian market's fundamentals should be a worry We have a good opportunity to narrow economic gap with China If PLI scheme delivers, we may well become manufacturer to the world Investors looking for growth will then come to India What about the opportunity the US-China trade war gave? China is competitive; exporting more now than before pandemic India needs to leverage its strengths sector by sector US Fed has indicated a taper. Can global equity markets also take a breather? Excessive liquidity has created excessive valuation in asset classes like cryptos No such excess in the listed company/stock universe First impact of liquidity taper will be on NFT market, cryptos, unlisted equities The listed/stock market universe will be last to be impacted Should investors look at debt segment instead of equities? Debt was an option in March 2020 as well Investors must follow asset allocation What should be proportion for allocation to each asset class? Depends on life goals and risk profile Investment opportunities in the current market? Looking at an equal allocation between large, mid-and small-caps Some themes that will run long – Financialisation of savings: Beneficial for banks, NBFCs, AMCs, insurers, fintechs Export-oriented plays: Pharma, IT Industrial & engineering: Capex-driven play for the next 3-5 years

Background that led to becoming a transformational coach and meditation coach How she spent 6 years in India at an Ashram where it was taught to train the body to be submissive to the mind. A voice came through in meditation that told her to go to Israel. Within 30 minutes she booked a flight to Israel. when you let go of the how, Source shows up big time and takes care of the details for you Her Connection with Judaism before going to India The Hebrew name is a person's essence and reciting the Shema every night while in India What is idol worship and what happened at the Ashram When and how she got to Israel Magnetic pull to Jerusalem With your understanding of meditation and manifesting, plus being in control of our thoughts, what is still attracting to living an orthodox life and with modesty? Coming to Torah While the eastern culture focused on transcending the physical - celibacy, living without solid food, without sleep, etc - what drew her to Torah and Judaism was that it is a place where Heaven and Earth kiss, the spiritual meets physical Manifestation through a Torah Lens co-creating with God. My job is to get out of my own way, so God can shower me with miracles Setting a clear intention Manifesting through a Torah Lens allows God to be present in all that she teaches How Torah made manifesting easier In India the relationship with manifesting was "look what I manifested." It felt very ego-centric. When I came to Israel and learned manifestation through a Jewish lens, it allowed just me to relax so much more into the receiving part of receiving the miracles because I realized God's creativity is so much more creative than anything my human mind can possibly come up with in terms of the how trusting in Hashem's creation and not needing to set an intention — "ultimately God knows what I want, but if Hashem was in control and just gave everyone what they want 24/7, then there'd be no reason to create us in the first place...where we have no free will." A Mindset of lack creates more lack, a mindset of abundance creates more abundance When people go to pray it usually comes in the form of begging, complaining, crying from a place of lack, but when you're asking from lack what is communicated is that the person doesn't believe in God' Infiniteness and that He can create any possibility for the person. Ayelet's Meditation practice She spends 21 minutes doing visualization. She writes her intention, any doubts or blockages that she believes are stopping her from already having the desire be manifest, then 21 minutes envisioning herself in that future as if its already hers. as a daily practice 21 minutes is a magic number. The key is to make it daily. When I research Jonathan Rodrigues to prepare for my podcast, I wasn’t surprised that he put a like to a post on LinkedIn from Charlie Irvine “We shape the world by our choice of words, so the world of other people’s conflict shapes us." Jonathan is a lawyer, civil, commercial and cross-border mediator in India. He speaks with passion about mediation and is very clear about the legacy that he wants to have with 1.3 billion in India “there is scope for mediation. It’s about creating a different future for those people." Jonathan says “every morning we wake up to #missionmediation” In our conversation, we talked about: - The landscape of mediation in India - How to promote mediation in India - What he learnt by doing his TED Talk on ‘multi-door dispute resolution’ - The role of AI in mediation - How to manage the difference of opinions Jonathan speaks about the influence that Owen Fiss (Yale Law school) "Against settlement" has had on his way of thinking. My favourite quote from this episode: “The most thrilling part of mediation is when you take away all that noise to start a proper conversation” If you have any questions or if you’d like to discuss how conflict resolution training can help your organisation, email me at npowrie@nadinepowrie.com for a virtual tour of my online training ‘Managing difficult conversations’. #mediation #conflictresolution
In this episode we talk to Ingrid Srinath, Director of the Centre for Social Impact & Philanthropy at Ashoka University about philanthropy and civil society in India and the impact of new restrictions have come in as part of the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act 2020 (FCRA 2020). (Disclaimer: the views expressed are Ingrid’s own and do not necessarily reflect those of her employer, or of CAF). We discussed: The FCRA 2020 What is the FCRA 2020? Why are CSOs in India concerned about the impact it will have? How much existing funding will be affected by the new rules? What is the rationale from government? Does this stand up to scrutiny? Has the Covid-19 pandemic played any role in precipitating this move on the part of the Indian government? What is the rationale for prohibiting onward granting? Why is this a particular cause for concern? Will this particularly harm smaller organisations and less poplar causes? As part of the new FCRA the Indian government has stipulated that no more than 20% of a foreign contribution can be spent on “administrative expenses”. How are these defined? What is the rationale for this? Will this new limitation on administrative expenses make it harder to invest in infrastructure, digital capabilities, governance etc.? The new law also requires CSOs in receipt of FCRA funds to do so in a dedicated bank account at a New Delhi branch of the State Bank of India- what is the rationale for this? The wider context for Civil Society & Philanthropy in India What is the overall makeup of the Indian civil society sector, in terms of formalised vs informal orgs, large vs small, different cause areas etc.? What is the attitude of the Indian government towards civil society in general? What is the attitude towards CSO advocacy and campaigning? How has the Covid pandemic affected Indian civil society? What is the infrastructure for civil society in India like? Are there gaps, and if so where? What is the history and current context for philanthropy in India? E.g. how much HNWI giving is there? How much mass market giving? What role does corporate philanthropy play? What role do foundations play? What kind of domestic causes receive philanthropic funding in India? What is the attitude of the Indian government towards philanthropy? What is the attitude of the Indian public towards philanthropy? What kind of philanthropic responses to the covid-19 crisis have we seen in India? Do recent critiques of philanthropy in the US and elsewhere resonate in the Indian context? (E.g. re that philanthropy exacerbates inequality, that it is anti-democratic, that some source of wealth are “tainted” etc.). Believe it or not China is not the only country you can source products from. In fact, depending on the products you want to sell, it may not even be the best option to source from. Lokesh Parahsar of ADK India is joining me to share the inside scoop on Indian factories and why it may make more sense to source in India! One caveat for a newbie seller is that there is no central online hub for factories and sellers to communicate within the Indian market. If you’re looking to DIY your factory search and communication, just know you’ll be giving the Google beast a good workout. However, for any product that needs increased time spent or detailed work, Indian factories are better equipped to handle higher level requirements. Anupama Hoskere with us on Audiogyan. She is the founder of Dhaatu, a non-profit organization that seeks to introduce our children our traditional wisdom and tales through puppetry. She did her Engineering from BMS College of Engineering, Bangalore with a Master’s degree from California State Univ, Long Beach. She is also a performing Bharathanatyam artist and currently a member of the Karnataka Sangeeta Nrutya Academy. Anupama scripts, creates the puppets and directs her puppet shows. And today we are here to know more about it. Topic Puppetry’s landscape in Bangalore with Anupama Hoskere Questions Dhaatu has been organising puppet festivals since 2009. Bangalore had not witnessed a puppet festival for 21 years before that. Can you start by painting us a panoramic landscape of Puppetry as an art form in Bangalore? How was is it even before you started Panchalikas till how is it today? On the similar lines - You have taught and presented your puppetry work in France, Belgium, China and also in many parts of India - What are your observations in various places. What is the state of it? Is there any pattern which you discovered w.r.t type of puppets (string, rod etc…), government support for this art form, type of stories being told, innovation due to technology or any other insights? I know we can’t and we shouldn’t compare art forms. But just for understanding, what are the advantage of Puppetry in comparison with Human theatre? I did one episode with Dadi Padumjee and he said, “puppets make the messenger opaque; there by purely focussing on the message without any prejudices about the actor” - On the same lines, what has been your observations. If I am not wrong, your effort is more towards educating children this wonderful art form. What are the efforts Dhaatu has taken to make it relevant to younger generation w.r.t Story, Music, Styles of puppets, dialogues and more…? Every art form which has begun in India or has originated in India starts off with mythological stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata. From Dadasaheb Phalke’s Kaliya Mardan to Girish Karnad’s Yayati. Even you have performed stories of physically challenged child and a single mother in Ashtavakra and many more. Why Puppetry being such a ancient and old art form of India telling the same stories of values and morals in this day and age? With Puppetry, what worries you every night when you go to bed and what gives you hope to face the new day with enthusiasm?
Annie went to India initially to work on a healthcare program that she developed with her brother for mothers and children. When Annie first tried jackfruit, she didn’t intend to start a company around the delicious fruit. But over time, she believed jackfruit could be a solution to the prevailing poverty that led to the health concerns she was trying to address. Back then, there weren’t any commercial supply chains for it, and no commercial products developed with it. As a result, a lot of it was going to waste. “This was an opportunity to take a truly amazing natural resource, a miracle crop, and instead of letting it go to waste, convert it into massive incremental income for farming families.” So how’d Annie build the supply chain for her company? It just took an enormous amount of trust, confidence, and persistence, all for an unwanted fruit. In this episode Annie’s first trip to India What jackfruit is and the stigma around it How Annie built her supply chain from scratch Her market research and the plant-based movement How The Jackfruit Company develops its products How jackfruit curbs climate change The gap between medicine and nutrition Read the full story here.

Thank you! ::: India with Kids Meet Jenny Lynn. She and her husband Jason tried backpacking in India before they had children. Fast forward a few years and they're living in the UK with two young boys. Then there was an opportunity to transfer Jason's job to Bangalore. They took it. In this episode of Epic Education Radio, Jenny tells us all about traveling in India with kids. We talk about food in India, train travel in India and lots of other important travel tips regarding India for families. Listen in! And please share! Why Visit India? Why India with Kids? Travel in India is polarizing. After traveling to India, some people return home starry-eyed, waiting to return. Others leave early and never want to come back. When I ask Jenny about this, she says that she can relate to both sides. "India is a place of ups and downs," she explains, "but there's an energy here that gets under your skin." The Challenges of Traveling in India with Children India travel offers some unique challenges and rewards. The rewards are obvious: the privilege of experiencing one of the most fascinating cultures and histories in the world. The food, the colors, the spices, the architecture, and dance. And of course, the "energy" that Jenny speaks of. The challenges seem even more obvious: the poverty, the filth, the street-level desperation. Then there is the yawning gap between rich and poor, and the corruption that festers between them. There is the noise. And the chaos. Then there are the issues with food safety and overly "enthusiastic" touts, hawkers and panhandlers. It's a lot to take in. Jenny describes many of the issues she faces living in India, and what travelers should expect. When and Where: India Travel Tips Jenny talks about some of the best places to visit and the best time to visit India. In general, Jenny recommends visiting India with children in November through January. Otherwise, you may have to deal with a "hissing 40 degrees (Celcius / 104ºF)" and oppressive humidity. Know where to go in India? Know things to do in India? If not, then Jenny has lots of suggestions. We talk about the typical "Golden Triangle" route (Delhi, Taj Mahal & Jaipur) and how the suggests tackling it. Jenny also talks briefly about Kerala, Rishikesh, Hampi and other favorite India destinations. Then discuss exploring Goa with kids, India's famous beach getaway has lots of potential for family travelers. We also talk a lot about train travel in India and how to get the most out of it. Does Jenny recommend train travel in India? Absolutely. We discuss India train classes and their experience in India's sleeper class for overnight train trips. Apps, Food, and Safety in India Jenny gives great practical information about many aspects of Indian family travel. She talks about how to avoid spicy food in India. We also discuss real issues that Western women and fair-haired children face and how best to address them. Jenny also details several very useful apps to use in India. Whether it's a taxi or the supermarket, India has an app for it. Have You Been to India with Kids? Question: have you been backpacking in India with children? Have you lived in India with kids? Sujatha Reddy, Ayurvedic consultant and counselor, is going to discuss the principles of Ayurveda, how it translates into a modern psychological system, an analysis of the mind from this perspective, and a lot of other really interesting information. Civilized life has many amazing benefits. We can create great structures and share information with each other. But as we all know it also has it’s complications. Some of the biggest issues in civilized societies are interpersonal relationships, our physical health and how we stay well in our own mind. Mental illness is actually quite a serious issue across the world in developed and developing countries. Because of these types of issues that come along with civilization, people throughout time have been using different systems to address the health of the mind and physical body. Ayurveda is one of the oldest systems of medicine originating in India roughly 5,000 years old when sages were the predominant healers in society. A little-known fact is that long before western psychology systems were developed, Ayurveda had its own psychological framework that’s vast in both theory and clinical applications. In this episode you’ll learn: What is Ayurveda and how does it translate to modern psychology and psychotherapy Where is the mind located from an Ayurvedic perspective The distinction between Ayurvedic doctors and Allopathic physicians in India What do people with mental health issues in India do for help When can Ayurveda act as an alternative to psychiatric medication A new but very old lens on mental health disorders Visit www.higherpractice.com/podcast to get the show notes for this episode and to learn more about Sujatha Reddy's full course in the Higher Practice Institute.
What do Zombies, bikers, and god have in common? Our guest Jeff Kober is a man with that answer. He's a veteran Hollywood actor, who's appeared in dozens of television shows and films (including The Walking Dead and Sons of Anarchy), all the while practicing and teaching meditation and Vedic philosophy. He also happens to be my personal spiritual mentor and teacher. In this truly epic and enlightening episode, Jeff shares his insights on the entire creative process of being an artist, and how to avoid letting the ego rob you of a fulfilling experience of honest self-expression. He describes how he uses his 30 years of meditation practice, and his many pilgrimages to India to not only fuel his success as an actor, but also to manage and guide his entire life. During these two hour-long episodes, you will learn how to apply deeply esoteric spiritual practices into your daily life, no matter what particular belief system you belong (or don’t belong) to. Jeff has an uncanny ability to translate his vast body of spiritual knowledge and understanding of god into straightforward and relatable terms. It’s pretty awesome. By the end of this episode, you will quite possibly make peace with the existence of evil here on earth, and find a means by which to recontextualize your subjective and worldly experiences of suffering into valuable lessons. For, after all, most of what we each see and feel each day are merely projections of the mind and ego. Jeff is going to teach us all how we can learn to disidentify with those parts of ourselves that are not real and get grounded in The Ultimate Reality. Sit back and enjoy the journey from your mind to your heart. Please pass this show along to someone you know who could use some simple answers to life's most complicated questions. As a tradition that began over 2500 years ago, India remains one of the world's largest exporters of handmade carpets. In fact, I recently read somewhere about why Mahatma Gandhi decided to use Charkha as a symbol of independence. Because the Britishers invaded India for our textile capabilities, quality and over all output. Gandhiji wanted to symbolize the freedom movement through one of the attributes of textiles - Charkha - But thats a story for some other time. For ages, until 1978, exports have often been exploited by middlemen and - artisans were undervalued, most weavers stayed at the bottom of the pyramid with very meager income levels. Nand Kishore Chaudhary recognized this inequality in the weaving market and created the company, Jaipur Rugs which offered employment opportunities in remote areas of India. Starting with only two looms, he was able to connect people and now has built a network of over 40,000 artisans spread over five Indian states, 80 percent of whom are women. His daughter, Kavita Chaudhary steers the design and brand philosophy at Jaipur Rugs. Before joining the family business, she refined her aptitude for design by working with design houses in Chicago and New York. Today we are here to understand the broad landscape of textile design in India at the backdrop of Jaipur Rugs, real design sensibilities of India, and a short but beautiful case study called Manchaha.
