In this powerful and heartfelt episode of Innovate & Elevate, Sharon Kedar is joined by two remarkable young women, Alice Paul Tapper and Audrey Maged, for an inspiring discussion on the importance of self-advocacy and resilience, particularly in the face of medical misdiagnosis.Alice, a high school senior and author of two picture books, including her upcoming release "Use Your Voice," shares her harrowing experience of surviving untreated appendicitis that led to a life-threatening sepsis diagnosis. She details her journey from feeling dismissed by healthcare professionals to becoming a fierce advocate for herself and others. Her story is a testament to the critical need for patients, especially young girls, to speak up and advocate for their own health, even when it means challenging authority.Audrey Maged, Sharon's daughter and a fourth grade student, was diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri, more commonly known as idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), a condition that involves increased pressure around the brain, leading to symptoms like severe headaches. Audrey joins the conversation to reflect on the common barriers children face when trying to express their needs in a healthcare setting. Both Alice and Audrey emphasize the importance of teaching young people to use their voices, not just in healthcare but in all areas of life.Sharon, Alice, and Audrey unpack the societal norms that often discourage girls from being assertive and how these norms can have serious consequences when it comes to healthcare. They also discuss the emotional and psychological impacts of feeling unheard and the role parents and communities play in empowering children to advocate for themselves.Episode Outline(01:47) Raise Your Hand: Be Bold, Be Brave (09:42) Alice's Misdiagnosis Journey (18:45) Use Your Voice: You Are Your Best AdvocateConnect with SharonConnect with Sharon on LinkedIn: Sharon KedarFollow Sharon on Instagram: @sharonkedarcfa Learn more about Innovate and Elevate innovateandelevatepodcast.comSubscribe to Innovate and Elevate on YouTubeJoin the newsletter to receive the latest episodes in your inbox: Innovate and Elevate NewsletterAdditional ResourcesUse Your Voice by Alice Paul Tapper Raise Your Hand by Alice Paul Tapper Raise Your Hand Girl Scout PatchChildren's Hospital of Philadelphia This podcast is produced by the women at The Wave Editing

As artists, we rarely lack ideas. But how do you nurture those ideas so that they come to full fruition? It's possible to rush that first inkling, so that it never has a chance to reach its full potential. It's also possible to have so many flashes of inspiration that you never find a focus. Both Alice and Louise are feeling the need to make a nurturing space for their current ideas, and both are working on ways to do that. We don't have all the answers - but maybe we have some thoughts that can help you find your own balance. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Shapley values: Better than counterfactuals, published by NunoSempere on the Effective Altruism Forum. [Epistemic status: Pretty confident. But also, enthusiasm on the verge of partisanship] One intuitive function which assigns impact to agents is the counterfactual, which has the form: CounterfactualImpact(Agent) = Value(World) - Value(World/Agent) which reads "The impact of an agent is the difference between the value of the world with the agent and the value of the world without the agent". It has been discussed in the effective altruism community that this function leads to pitfalls, paradoxes, or to unintuitive results when considering scenarios with multiple stakeholders. See: Triple counting impact in EA The counterfactual impact of agents acting in concert In this post I'll present some new and old examples in which the counterfactual function seems to fail, and how, in each of them, I think that a less known function does better: the Shapley value, a concept from cooperative game theory which has also been brought up before in such discussions. In the first three examples, I'll just present what the Shapley value outputs, and halfway through this post, I'll use these examples to arrive at a definition. I think that one of the main hindrances in the adoption of Shapley values is the difficulty in its calculation. To solve this, I have written a Shapley value calculator and made it available online: shapleyvalue.com. I encourage you to play around with it. Example 1 & recap: Sometimes, the counterfactual impact exceeds the total value. Suppose there are three possible outcomes: P has cost $2000 and gives 15 utility to the world Q has cost $1000 and gives 10 utility to the world R has cost $1000 and gives 10 utility to the world Suppose Alice and Bob each have $1000 to donate. Consider two scenarios: Scenario 1: Both Alice and Bob give $1000 to P. The world gets 15 more utility. Both Alice and Bob are counterfactually responsible for giving 15 utility to the world. Scenario 2: Alice gives $1000 to Q and Bob gives $1000 to R. The world gets 20 more utility. Both Alice and Bob are counterfactually responsible for giving 10 utility to the world. From the world's perspective, scenario 2 is better. However, from Alice and Bob's individual perspective (if they are maximizing their own counterfactual impact), scenario 1 is better. This seems wrong, we'd want to somehow coordinate so that we achieve scenario 2 instead of scenario 1. Source Attribution: rohinmshah In Scenario 1: Counterfactual impact of Alice: 15 utility. Counterfactual impact of Bob: 15 utility. Sum of the counterfactual impacts: 30 utility. Total impact: 15 utility. The Shapley value of Alice would be: 7.5 utility. The Shapley value of Bob would be: 7.5 utility. The sum of the Shapley values always adds up to the total impact, which is 15 utility. In Scenario 2: Counterfactual impact of Alice: 10 utility. Counterfactual impact of Bob: 10 utility. Sum of the counterfactual impacts: 20 utility. Total impact: 20 utility. The Shapley value of Alice would be: 10 utility. The Shapley value of Bob would be: 10 utility. The sum of the Shapley values always adds up to the total impact, which is 10+10 utility = 20 utility. In this case, if Alice and Bob were each individually optimizing for counterfactual impact, they'd end up with a total impact of 15. If they were, each of them, individually, optimizing for the Shapley value, they'd end up with a total impact of 20, which is higher. It would seem that we could use a function such as CounterfactualImpactModified = CounterfactualImpact / NumberOfStakeholders to solve this particular problem. However, as the next example shows, that sometimes doesn't work. The Shapley value, on the other hand, has the property that it always adds up to total value. Property 1: T...

Today’s episode is full of hope and maybe even some perspective changers for some of you, especially when it comes to what you can handle at once. Our guest today is Alice Crisci. She is an author, fertility preservation spokeswoman and social entrepreneur, and most importantly, a mother on a mission. Her story is incredible. I talk with Alice about the non-profit she founded, Fertile Action, for fertile women touched by cancer, along with her new app MedAnswers, that seeks to connect patients experiencing fertility challenges, oncology issues, or even genetic questions with industry vetted experts. Within weeks of her own breast cancer diagnosis, Alice harvested her eggs to protect her opportunity to become a mom after surviving cancer, had a nude photography session, launched Fertile Action and published her first book, Too Young for This. She is a game changer in legislation and technology, and an inspiration for women looking for expert education, support, and courage. To share your own fertility story, please email me at hillary@ladypotions.com. I look forward to connecting with you, as you are what this podcast is all about. Takeaway: [3:43] Within a few weeks of her diagnosis, Alice learned about the scariest potential side effect of breast cancer and it’s treatment: infertility. Egg freezing was still considered experimental, and she needed more insurance than just a 2-3% chance. She then realized embryo freezing was a better way to go, and continued down her path to single motherhood and faced with the tough decision of picking a donor, all while dealing with the severity of her current diagnosis. [9:59] When picking a potential donor, Alice encourages women to be truthful with who they are, and who they see themselves with. Be specific and rule out any health history concerns that matter to you. Alice picked a donor that spoke to her and matched her own internal values, as it was important that her child know the story of both sides having grit and tenacity. [17:44] Alice is on a private Facebook group with other families that used the same donor that she used for her son, and she calls them his ‘diblings.’ They share anecdotes and stay connected. [18:20] Due to all the genetic testing that is available, open donorship has become way more prevalent and necessary. [21:43] Alice developed her non-profit Fertile Action as a way to take on insurance coverage and a fee reduction for women who found themselves in fertility preservation cases. She created a network of discounted fees for cancer patients and found it required a large amount of effort and resources. [24:39] Alice gives recognition to the legislators who also helped take Fertile Action and their partnered organizations as their cause. [27:03] Alice has now turned a major part of her attention and focus on the app MedAnswers. This helps to connect those struggling to conceive with seven different types of fertility experts. Digital tools are critical, especially when facing a health crisis and MedAnswers is a way for women to connect with experts while maintaining anonymity. [33:46] Both Alice and I are big proponents of empowering people with data about their own bodies, and not waiting until it is too late to have information. [35:49] Alice brings up a very interesting point about sex education benefiting from being more about reproductive health than the current topics of just pregnancy prevention. [36:08] Alice created a webinar just for Californians when it comes to insurance and the appeals process. Women Rocking Wall Street - A podcast dedicated to women in financial services
Toughing It Out with Alice Tang I’m pleased to welcome my friend Alice Tang to this week’s episode of Women Rocking Wall Street. Alice started her career as a financial advisor after moving to Portland in 1994, and today, she’s vice president of BPG Wealth Management LLC. Alice’s mission is to help people become financially independent and retire with confidence. As she tells us, getting to this point in her career was no easy feat. She describes her first year in the business as cold-calling people and setting up meetings nonstop. She was exhausted and made only $2,000 in year one, but was determined to press on. Alice’s dad ran a successful business himself and once told her that no matter what happens, it’s important to remember that she planted a seed that could one day become a plant. And in time, a plant most certainly did grow for Alice. Building a successful practice is challenging and takes time. Alice had to tough it out for years to see results; this is why in her own practice, she’s a believer in essentially creating apprenticeships where recent graduates or newbies to the finance industry can have a place to grow and be surrounded by the right people and resources. She also makes sure to pay a reasonable salary to those just starting their careers. Both Alice and her business partner came from a similar background—enduring years of difficulty before seeing results—so they both keep this in mind when hiring. People need to pay their bills, she says. We can’t make it impossible to break into the industry. After all, there are many benefits to grooming newcomers. For one, younger people can bring new ideas to the table, Alice says. And two, when an advisor retires, the firm has a strong replacement for the client. Sounds like a win-win situation! Join me next week with guests Jill and Michael Knouse. Yep! We’re going to have a man on the show!! Thanks for listening to this week’s episode of Women Rocking Wall Street!
