In this edition of Spotlight, we talk to one of the three partners at Asterisk, Mike Beier. Mike was born in Frankfurt, Germany, but his family moved to Novato, California, when he was 18 months old. Growing up in the Bay Area of California, Mike and his group of friends all rode mini-bikes. One friend in particular raced locally and invited Mike to come out and race his first motocross race, and so it began.
On this episode of the podcast Phillip is joined for the first time by his friend and sci-fi lover, Colleen Beier. The two talk about one of the greatest sequels of all time, 1986's Alien. Phillip starts the show by giving general information for the movie with some trivia thrown in. It's then time for Listener' Opinions from Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. The two then discuss the movie and talk a little about the 1990 director's cut. It's a great discussion about a cool movie. Then it's time to answer whether they notice anything from this movie that Tarantino may have liked or used in a film. They then individually rate the movie. Phillip and Colleen then answer whether they would buy this movie, rent it, or find it for free. It's then time for Phil's Film Favorite of the Week; White of the Eye (1987). This week's episode is in honour of Frank Beier, who recently passed away on July 18, 2025. Frank leaves behind a remarkable legacy through the impact he made in the field of osteoarthritis. In this previous episode (2021), he discussed the recent advances in osteoarthritis understanding with a particular emphasis on novel targets and epigenetics.Despite the large prevalence of osteoarthritis, there is no clinically approved drug which provides a cure. Currently, drugs focus on relieving symptoms such as pain. Experiments done in the laboratory have provided insight on osteoarthritis onset and progression and will likely guide therapeutic development. We know that osteoarthritis is a disease of the whole organ meaning that any of the tissues involved in the synovial joint can be affected. The interplay between the various cell types involved is complex and understanding the interactions between cartilage, bone and synovium may be critical to therapeutic development. Skeletal development likely plays a very important role in predisposition to disease. In the absence of Dean, who is flying back to San Diego, Jack is joined by football podcast royalty in Mike Zimmermann - to talk through both of the games and discuss the ramifications in more detail. We start with Aston Villa's impressive 3-2 win over PSG, where the Parisien favourites were given an almighty scare in the second half by Unai Emery's charges, who managed to break free of PSG's impressive counter-attacking hold after the break, going hell for leather and finding themselves some Gigi Donnarumma magic away from taking Luis Enrique's men to extra time. Then in Part Two, we head to the Westfalenstadion, where Dortmund had very little to lose, but managed to expose the Barcelona high line enough to give the Yellow Wall plenty to shout about. We take the eight teams in turn ahead of their QF matchups, thinking about star performers across the course of the competition, but also about which player their opposition would remove from these games if they were given a choice to do so - giving us some interesting names and discussions around how we rank players in systems.
