The eldest, Sun Charles (Justin Chien), has grown up as a killer and second to Big Sun, who is brought out of hiding and shot in the back. Forced to get help from his mother, Charles goes to LA to find Mama Sun (Michelle Yeoh) and his younger brother Bruce Sun (Sam Song Li), who has no knowledge of his family's legacy in China. Bruce lives a very mundane life driving Uber, going to pre-med school, and having aspirations of doing improv, where he spends money behind his mom's back. As the attacks against the Suns escalate, they are forced to work together, and Bruce must learn how to navigate the complex world of criminals and tradition. The show concludes with almost all of the Chinese crime bosses meeting and being massacred by a mysterious, unknown new organization that wants all the crime families gone. In the vacuum left Mama Sun returns with Charles to Tapai to take over the remains of the other organizations and leaves Bruce on his own for the first time in LA to pursue his passions.

We had so much fun talking about how we first met, the difference between working in NYC and then working outside of NYC, AAPI representation in filmed media, dealing with tough situations on set, and so much more! I really hope you enjoy this one.  --- Costume Designer Vera Chow Credits include: The Brothers Sun | The Walking Dead | Boogie | Deadbeat --- Vera Chow is a costume designer currently most known for her work on Seasons 10 and 11 of AMC's The Walking Dead and Netflix's action/dramedy The Brothers Sun, starring Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh.   Film, Art and Design, was young Vera's coping mechanism for bullying while growing up as a child in Hong Kong. Therefore, determined to move to the US, she knew she wanted to be a Costume Designer since she was 13.  Throughout the 15+ years of her career, Chow has worked on films and series worldwide, spanning from North America, South America, to as far as East Asia and Central Asia. She has covered genres from horror to scifi to romantic comedies, comfortably leaping back and forth from 1 million art films to 100 mill epics.    Vera is known for her penchant to acquire anything from thrift store pieces to bedsheets, and taking everything apart and rebuilding them into entirely reimagined costume changes (to the chagrin of her tailors and agers).    And as Vera's experience grew, she also became an outspoken advocate for AAPI representation for below the line film workers. --- Vera Chow Links: Website: verachowdesigns.com Instagram: @verachowdesigns Twitter: @verachowdesigns --- TFACD Links: Patreon: Tales From A Costume Designer Instagram: @talesfromacostumedesigner Twitter: @talesfromaCD TikTok: @talesfromaCD --- Whitney Anne Adams Links: Website: whitneyadams.com Instagram: @WAACostumeDesign Twitter: @WhitneyAAdams TikTok: @waacostumedesign Ko-Fi: @waacostumedesign --- Pay Equity Links: Pay Equity Now IG: @payequitynow Pay Equity Now TikTok: @payequitynow Costume Designers Guild IG: @cdglocal892 Local USA 829 Pay Equity Task Force IG: @usa829payequity United Scenic Artists Local 829 IG: @unitedscenicartists

This annual survey is a social tracking and national assessment of attitudes and stereotypes towards Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. In this episode, we review the report and provide an overview of it. We also dig into each of the sections and reflect on responses. As always, we highly recommend that you download the STAATUS Index and read it yourself. It's very well written with easily accessible information, so don't be afraid that it's data-rich. In our recurring segment we ask “What's Going On?” as we reflect on the sheer number of Asian Pacific-led TV shows that have been canceled in the last year or so. It's hard to wrap our heads around the fact that the last year has seen cancellations of The Afterparty, Kung Fu, Doogie Kamealoha M.D., NCIS: Hawaiʻi, Young Rock, Quantum Leap, American Born Chinese, The Brothers Sun, Warrior, and Our Flag Means Death. Welcome to Season 4, Episode 16! This episode is about The History of the Buddhist Churches of America. Buddhism is one of the religions often associated with Asian countries and the people who come from Asian Pacific nations. And it's for good reason, because it's a religion that originates from those countries. When it comes to understanding Buddhism in America, it would be difficult to talk about the history without mentioning the Buddhist Churches of America, an organization that has its roots in Jōdo Shinshū Buddhism that originated in the 13th century with the monk Shinran Shonin. In this episode, we share a short background on Shin Buddhism, a general overview of Buddhism in America, and the long history of the Buddhist Churches of America and its impact in the Japanese American Community and beyond. Since World War II and the Japanese internment, the BCA has continued to adapt to the changing needs of different generations. To learn more, you can visit the BCA Website or visit one of their locations (they're easy to find through the Temple Locator). Can the look of a movie or series tell the story as much as the actors in it?  Let's deep dive into the world of the dance of light and shadow through the lens of  Emmy-nominated cinematographer C Kim Miles.Kim's remarkable journey from the colorful bustle of Malaysia to the high-stakes soundstages of Hollywood will captivate you.  Starting from being a humble grip to a sought-after industry visionary, his  international perspective brings a unique flavor to projects like "Yellowjackets" and "The Brothers Sun," revealing how a diverse upbringing can deeply enrich one's artistic expression.Imagine the adrenaline rush of getting the call to meet a legendary director like Robert Zemeckis overnight,  leading to a whirlwind of anticipation and opportunity to be the DP  in the Zemeckis film "Welcome to Marwen." Kim and I explore the mix of anticipation and disbelief that encapsulates these serendipitous occurrences in the film industry. In this episode, we also discuss the synergy between a director and cinematographer as they sculpt the visual narrative of a film—as if in a dance, where every step is a frame and every turn is a new shade of light. Kim's fondness for indie projects, even after big-budget spectacles, underscores a heartfelt dedication to cinema that's driven by passion more than paycheck. Join me for this masterclass in passion, perseverance, and cinematic storytelling that'll leave you yearning to create, connect, and chase your own dreams.About C. *Spoiler Free 1st Half*  Netflix's The Brothers Sun started 2024 with a bang!  Starring Michelle Yeoh, it is a non-stop adventure from episode one. It is far from simply being a show about fighting a triad war, it has lots of comedic and heartfelt moments. At its core, it is a story about loyalty and family both born into and chosen. My co-host Katie and I got to spend our lunch hour with two of the stars of the show, Jon Xue Zhang who plays Blood Boots, and Alice Hewkin who plays twin sisters May and June.  Both Alice and Jon called in from England where they live.  They are both so kind, funny, and insightful.  We honestly could have talked to them until the wee hours of the night (London time). The new Netflix series The Brothers Sun is a fun genre mashup of action, comedy, and family drama. Michelle Yeoh plays Eileen Sun, who married into a powerful Taiwanese crime family, and then secretly raised her youngest son (Sam Song Li) in the U.S. to protect them both from being targeted by rival gangs, while her oldest son (Justin Chien) was left in Taiwan and is now a remorseless killer. But when danger threatens the family, they must band together by any means necessary.

Welcome to the Following Films podcast! I'm Chris Maynard, your host. Today, I had the chance to sit down with Kim Miles, cinematographer on WELCOME TO MARWEN, the Michael J. Fox documentary film STILL, CHAMPIONS, and LOST OLLIE. I had Kim on the show to discuss his latest project the Netflix original series THE BROTHERS SUN. The story in THE BROTHERS SUN is set in motion when the head of a Taiwanese triad is shot by an assassin, his eldest son, Charles `Chairleg' Sun, heads to Los Angeles to protect his mother and brother, who's been completely sheltered from the truth of his family until now. Before our conversation with Kim, I would like to thank our sponsor, Bookmans, an independent bookstore that believes in the magic of storytelling and the cinematic arts. If you're looking to expand your collection of films, music, or books, visit your nearest Bookmans and discover something truly wonderful. If you haven't already, please follow the Following Films podcast on Spotify to show your support. This will help us continue to bring you in-depth conversations with the talented individuals who shape the world of cinema. THE BROTHERS SUN premiers on Netflix on January 4th. I hope you enjoy the show!   --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/followingfilms/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/followingfilms/support
