KMO was probably the original doomer podcast host starting in the mid 2000s with his C-Realm Podcast. He interviewed many of the names we recognize now. JMG, James Howard Kunstler, Dmitry Orlov, and others. Listen in as hosts Steven and Ben follow KMO on his journey from Doomer to Optimist and his new podcast Padverb. KMO is the host and producer of the C-Realm Podcast, a cartoonist and author of the book ‘Conversations on Collapse.' His full bio and links are here https://gebb.io/about-kmo-new/ The Padverb podcast with KMO https://en.padverb.com/s/padverb_podcast Ben @bennirubber grew up in upstate NY, got a bachelors in psychology from Wells College and works with the developmentally disabled in Auburn, NY. He got into learning about soil health and regenerative agriculture from David Montgomery's books, a geomorpholigist in the interest of addressing climate change. Read more about the history of colonialism as it relates to ecological “changes in the land” (William Cronon) and indigenous cultures of North America (Shepherd Krech III). Ben grew heavily interested in peak oil and the collapse of civilization from “overshoot” (William Catton) and found KMO's C-Realm podcast at about the same time. After Covid settled down and growing nauseous toward any mindset that prescribed controlling the behavior of others, Ben settled into the collapse agnostic mindset but tried to do as much gardening around regular work and family life. Steven Morris started his journey into then unnamed realm of Doomer Optimism in 2011 when, during the time of a divorce, he stumbled upon 3 of the many early doomer optimist voices: Chris Martenson's Crash Course, John Michael Greer's blog The Archdruid Report, and KMO's C-Realm podcast. These 3 identified the many issues of decline in the world that he could sense but didn't have words for. At the same time they all provided positive possibilities for the future. Steven considers himself an amateur Renaissance Man and Polymath of sorts with a wide variety of interests including: appropriate use of technology, regenerative systems, explorations in consciousness, alternative (sometimes called complementary) currency systems, computer technology, and complex systems. He has worked on multiple award winning independent films, managed warehouse logistics for a small business, run a college radio station and lead ecstatic dance workshops. He is a trained Host for Nora Bateson's People Need People gatherings and recently completed work as video editor for the Commons Engine on their newly released Currency Design for Social Change master class on Udemy. Steven is committed to supporting people find their way through the rapidly changing chaos, especially those who don't see themselves as homesteaders.
I know we say this all the time around Doomer Optimism, but this time we really have a special episode. Brought live from Colombia, host Steven Morris (@lifesmyth) interviews Joe Brewer (@cognitivepolicy) about the Earth Regenerators community and the work they're doing in Colombia. Jason Snyder (@cognazor) also joins them. Gear up for an optimism-heavy episode. About Joe Brewer Joe Brewer has separate bachelors degrees in physics, mathematics, and interdisciplinary studies and a masters in atmospheric sciences. He is a complexity researcher, innovation strategist, experience designer, and serial social entrepreneur who brings a wealth of expertise to the adoption of sustainable solutions at the cultural scale. His experiences as a social entrepreneur and cross-disciplinary scholar weave together a combination of skills dedicated to open collaboration, interactive design, and empowered civic action for catalyzing change toward greater resilience in our turbulent world. More recently, he has moved to Colombia and is engaged in regenerating an area of dry desert with the aim of returning it to flourishing biodiversity. He has written The Design Pathway for Regenerating Earth and established Earth Regenerators, a community, a study group and a place to share ideas that will bring us closer to a prosocial world, focussed on bioregions where the human and More-Than-Human worlds integrate, where we organise with direct local democracy, create a steady state economy, based on shared values and not on growth, and where we predicate our actions on trusting the good intentions of others. On this episode of Doomer Optimism, Dr. Ashley Colby (@RizomaSchool) and Steven Morris (@lifesmyth) sit down with family, financial and legal expert Ali Katz (@thealikatz)for a conversation about leaning into the things that scare you most. Other topics include Terence McKenna, looking forward to and back upon 12 December 2012, Quetzalcoatl, the corruption of NPR, the degradation and dysfunction of the political left, media bias, and the book Cosmos And…
KMO welcomes podcaster and long-time friend of the C-Realm, J. G. Michael, to the C-Realm Podcast. J. G. is the host of the Parallax Views Podcast. His recent focus has been on geopolitics, and that's where this conversation focuses, with particular emphasis on "the national security blob," a phrase coined by Ben Rhodes, a top…
Hello friends! Its been a while. Sorry about that. Its been a busy semester, teaching an overload class, and wrapping up some publishing projects (here and here). But we are back, and we have a ton of new shows coming your way this summer! Coming up in the next weeks, we have another episode with our Columbus OH friends, “Chairman Moe's Magic Contradiction” on Adam Curtis's new documentary, ”Can't Get You Out of My Head.” We also have panels coming up, on Clyde Barrow's new book on the Lumpenproletariat, Phil Cunliffe's The New Twenty Years' Crisis, and an interview with Christine Louis-Dit-Sully. For this 31st episode of Fully Automated, and to help us break the dry spell, our guest is none other than legendary podcast figure “KMO”! KMO is the host and producer of the C-Realm Podcast, a cartoonist and author of the book ‘Conversations on Collapse.' On KMO's bio, there's a great quote from Doug Lain, creator of the Diet Soap podcast and now the Zero Books podcast (and previous guest of this show!): KMO was once a winner in the capitalist game. He had high tech dreams and plenty of ambition, but somewhere along the line KMO dropped out, spent what he had, and started over in a simpler way. No longer rich and no longer so enamored with the technocratic fantasies of the prevailing order, he squeaks by in this world while seeking another. More than anything KMO is a broadcaster and interviewer who has a gentle and amiable way of challenging and inspiring interesting conversations with authors, artists, psychedelic gurus, sociologists, NASA scientists, economists, and more on his weekly podcast called the C-Realm. Now, to be sure, KMO is not exactly what you might call a ‘typical guest' for this podcast. Yet, as you'll hear, he is a widely read reader on all things to do with the politics of technology, and science fiction. I first met KMO a few weeks ago, in the Politics and Science Fiction room, on Clubhouse that I started earlier this year, with Giuseppe Porcaro, Jamie Chipperfield, Sarah Shoker, and Nicholas Barrett. It became clear we had some overlapping interests on the topics under discussion, so we stayed in touch and found out that we have a lot of mutual friends in the leftwing podcast universe. KMO recently invited me on his show, the C-Realm, for a discussion of science fiction and the politics of technological change. And this episode of Fully Automated is kind of a Part 2 of that show, where KMO responds to my arguments. In this episode, you'll hear us discuss a wide range of topics: Clubhouse as a phenomena; recent remarks by the pop star Grimes on whether communists should be interested in Fully Automated Communism; the rise of PMC ideology, and why its so hard to discuss the topic of class on the left anymore; Thomas Frank's recent claims about Wuhan lab leak theory, and its significance for the already tarnished reputation of mainstream media; and, finally, we chat about politics and science fiction — you'll hear KMO talk about why and how science fiction is (and isn't!) for him political! For those interested, here are the links to the couple of items KMO mentioned in the show: His written response to my views on FALC, as I expressed them during my appearance on C-Realm (see my brief rejoinder below). The book he mentions is Future Scenarios: How Communities Can Adapt to Peak Oil and Climate Change, by David Holmgren (2009-04-14). Rejoinder: Reading KMO's published remarks on Patreon, he offers what I find to be a rather wild and somewhat bad faith interpretation of my views on Walmart and FALC: "You invoked WalMart as an example of a very complicated system of production and supply chain management and then suggested that it needn't be labor-intensive. You could just set it up and let it run for long periods and just check in on it from time to time. That's not how WalMart works.
KMO welcomes Professor Nicholas Kiersey to the C-Realm to talk about the guiding principles that could lead technological humanity to a post-scarcity, post-capitalist existence in which nobody has to toil, and everyone has everything they need to live a fulfilling and dignified life. Seem unlikely? Prof. Nick isn't here to argue for the technical feasibility.…

KMO welcomes the Angry Animator, Dermot O'Connor, and Bob Brown, technologist and permaculturalist back to the C-Realm to follow up on KMO's recent conversation with Justin Ritchie about the documentary film, Planet of the Humans. KMO welcomes Dr. Justin Ritchie, co-creator of the Extraenvironmentalist Podcast, back to the C-Realm to discuss the controversy around the documentary, Planet of the Humans. The film calls out mainstream environmentalist organizations like the Sierra Club and environmentalist celebrities like Bill McKibben for endorsing feel-good measures which aim at preserving the industrial lifestyle but which…
Curious about how best the future should proceed money-wise, I consult someone far more expert than I in making podcasting pay, if only a little: KMO of the C-Realm and of the GEBB.IO web comic.
KMO is the host and producer of the C-Realm Podcast and author of the book 'Conversations on Collapse.' He describes himself as, "a recovering libertarian and Singularitarian." The C-Realm began in 2006 and since then he has conducted over 300 podcast interviews on topics ranging from organic farming and permaculture, peak oil and the collapse of industrial civilization, to psychedelic spirituality and drug policy reform. The roster of guests includes Bill McKibben, Dmitry Orlov, Albert Bates, Thomas Homer-Dixon, Charles A.H. Hall, Albert Bartlett, James Howard Kunstler, Derrick Jenson, Bruce Damer, Neil Kramer, and Dennis McKenna among others. http://c-realm.com
As an early employee at Amazon.com, KMO made a fortune on stock options then spent it all. This change in personal circumstances has led to a massive evolution in KMO’s thinking from "a recovering libertarian and Singularitarian." KMO’s C-Realm podcast provides, as he describes it, “an unintended look into KMO’s evolving worldview.” KMO beautifully represents a feature of the white belt, yellow belt, the orange belt and the green belt. KMO has found himself in many cult(ure)s. None of them having anything to do with a supernatural deity. Moreover, his personal experiences have created feeeeeeelings that have shaped his thinking. The difference is that unlike some people, KMO is not only aware of this but honest and open about it. You can find more about KMO at https://c-realm.com and https://www.youtube.com/c/outtamyhead
We're joined by eloquent US podcaster KMO, who has made hundreds of hours of fascinating radio through The C-Realm, which covers many of the same topics as Greening the Apocalypse, only he's been at it since 2006. KMO shares his personal journey from a well paid early Amazon employee -- a time when he was inspired by techno-utopian visions -- to an out-of-work divorcee feeling more attracted to doomsday scenarios; and we discuss what role psychology plays into our visions for the future. If you want to hear the longer version of KMO's story check out C-Realm Radio 045 from about 30 minutes in -- it's great radio.
Bruce Frederick Damer is a Canadian-American multi-disciplinary scientist, designer, and speaker. He works in evolutionary biology researching the question of the origin of life and the exploration and economic development of space. He also has a practice in the design of innovative software systems interfaces and a passion for collecting and curating historical archives in computing history and leading figures of the counter-culture. Dr. Damer performs as a storyteller on a range of subjects under the moniker science + vision = hope. He began performing in 2003 and is featured at venues such as Burning Man, and the Esalen Institute. He also performs at music and art festivals worldwide including Buddhafield, Symbiosis, Rainbow Serpent, Earth Frequency, and Lightning in a Bottle, covering topics ranging through science, space, deep evolutionary history, questions of origins, and the meaning and future of the human enterprise. Many of these talks many be found online through podcasts such as the Joe Rogan Experience, the Psychedelic Salon, the Biota Podcast, the Space Show, the Dr. Future Show, the C-Realm, the Midwest Real Podcast, and the Tink Tink Club. A good selection of Dr. Damer's talks and philosophy as well as conversations and featured guest speakers are collected together in his own Levity Zone podcast. In the late 1990s, Dr. Damer met the American philosopher and storyteller Terence McKenna and formed a collaboration investigating the connection between computer virtual worlds and the inner worlds experienced through alternative states of consciousness. Following McKenna's death in 2000 he worked with Lorenzo Hagerty to digitally remaster McKenna's talks and collect his last remaining papers. In 2006 he became an agent for the estate of Dr.Timothy Leary and received the remaining books, news archive, record collection, and ephemera from Leary's archives. Working with the Internet Archive he established several online libraries of historical materials: Psychedelia, which contains unique materials from counter-cultural figures and Archiving Virtual Worlds focused on the early history of virtual worlds, and games, built in collaboration with Dr. Henry Lowood of Stanford University. Dr. Damer is a follower of a scientific version of the philosophy of liminality occupying a liminal boundary between rational, reductionist, materialist approaches to reality but open to inspiration from alternative states of consciousness. He has built a practice of intentionally seeking visionary experiences through meditative states that can be grounded in scientific insights or guiding stories. He has refined this philosophy since childhood when he occupied himself entering imaginal worlds and expressing those worlds through his artwork. Dr. Damer is currently researching a book based on interviews with other practitioners of what he terms the "endo way", meaning insights sourced through endogenous methods who then pragmatically apply their insights to real world applications. Find Dr. Damer on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and videos on Vimeo and YouTube Some of Dr. Damer's scientific articles are listed on ResearchGate Google search on Bruce Damer

I've had some difficulties loading up this podcast so please bear with me, the recording of this podcast also had some irregular difficulties. Someday I'll eventually figure this all out.... someday. In this episode KMO of the C-Realm Podcast stops by to talk about his recent book (Conversations On Collapse), his Podcast, and the Eco-Village. We also explore many other topics including talking about KMO's tales of the road as he has been couch-surfing while promoting his recent book. The conversation also veers into talking about technology and Kevin Kelley's recent book 'What Technology Wants'.
Tom introduces the format of the show to guest, KMO (or Kevin O'Connor as he is known to his friends on Facebook), host of the C-Realm podcast. Tom kicks off talking about 9/11. (Tom's example of the Genting Highlands collapse was not due to fire.) Tom ask about Kevin's experience with the Couch Surfing Touring. Kevin notes that a physical community is still superior to a virtual community. Kevin talks about the origin of KMO. They discuss Kevin's possible embodiment of Douglas Rushkoff's philosophies in Life Inc. Tom asks about Kevin's current life and the skills that are needed to survive. The conversation then moves to Kevin/KMO's new book, Conversations on Collapse: C-Realm Podcast Transcripts. Tom offers a discussion about publishing and then models of podcasting. Kevin offers zombie movies as a topic of discussion. They explore films you like as a reflection of your own psychological perspective.
