The way we design and plan our cities and towns significantly influences our daily lives, which, in turn, affects our carbon emissions and ecological footprints. Australia's continually expanding cities are a striking example of this, illustrating the consequences of an unrelenting pursuit of growth. Fortunately, there are a few urban planners who recognise that transitioning to a degrowth, steady-state system is imperative for the future of urban planning. Our special guest, Emeritus Professor Michael Buxton (OAM) is one such expert. Michael Buxton is one of the most well known and most quoted planning professors in Australia and has taught thousands of planning students over the years at RMIT University and Monash University, as well as working in the public service for 12 years. Despite officially being retired, Michael continues to play a huge role in town planning issues, including being interviewed for podcasts such as PGAP. As a resident of Melbourne, Michael discusses his home city as a case study throughout the interview to illustrate the current state of urban planning. In particular, he draws attention to the Victorian government's obsession with ‘growth at all cost' and their ongoing deregulation of the urban planning sector. This episode provided us with an opportunity to discuss the importance of systemic change towards a post growth society and why this will lead to much better planning and development outcomes. We invite you to share this very important episode among your networks and rate and review PGAP on Apple Podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/post-growth-australia-podcast/id1522194099), or contact us (https://pgap.fireside.fm/contact) with your thoughts and ideas. PGAP is made possible by the support of Sustainable Population Australia (https://population.org.au/) (SPA). All opinions, views and legacies past and present of our guests are exclusive theirs and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of PGAP or SPA. Speaking of Sustainable Population Australia, PGAP co-hosts Mark Allen (https://holisticactivism.net/)and Michael Bayliss (https://michaelbayliss.org/) worked with SPA on an animated video, "The Endless Growth Paradigm (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9445ShUJqM)", launched in 2019. The animation explores why we need to break from a system of endless economic and population growth. Otherwise, our neighbourhoods will never be dense enough, our cities will never stop sprawling and we will never catch up with the infrastructure backlog. The video has amassed ten thousand views on YouTube and we believe it is still very relevant five years later. If you are keen to revolutionise the town planning sector, we encourage you to check out Town Planning Rebellion (https://holisticactivism.net/town-planning-rebellion-tpr/) or, if you are a resident of Victoria, Planning Democracy, chaired by Kelvin Thomson. PGAP has explored the issue of urban planning and overdevelopment several times. If you would like to find out more, we recommend our interviews with Kelvin Thomson, (https://pgap.fireside.fm/politics) Alex Baumann (https://pgap.fireside.fm/degrowthousing)and David Holmgren (https://pgap.fireside.fm/holmgren). Can suburban backyards become the cornerstone of our sustainable future? Join us as we dissect the ideas in David Holmgren's "Retro Suburbia," where he envisions a world shaped by energy descent and societal degrowth. We kick off with Holmgren's strategic re-release of his book during the COVID-19 pandemic and his bold claims, examining the validity of his assertions and his data. Holmgren's blended manual-manifesto style of his work are scrutinized for their impact and credibility. While Holmgren's vision is compelling, we challenge the individualistic ethos often echoed by prominent permaculture figures. By contrasting historical communal living with today's nuclear solutions, we advocate for more pragmatic, collective approaches like shared canning centers and communal storage. We delve into the impracticalities of doubling household infrastructures and emphasize the efficiency of systemic community-based solutions, arguing that resilience and sustainability are best achieved through collective action rather than individual endeavors. In our deep dive into Holmgren's more controversial ideas, we confront his views on human waste management, suburban farming, and population control. Highlighting the need for scientific validation and proper hygiene practices, we question the feasibility and ethics behind some of Holmgren's proposals. From the romanticization of self-sufficiency to troubling perspectives on genetics and women's roles, we stress the importance of critical assessment within the permaculture movement. From Bill Mollison's diverse and adventurous background to David Holmgren's educational journey, we piece together how their unique experiences and shared vision culminated in the creation of permaculture. Tune in for a captivating look at the origins of permaculture and the key figures who shaped its development. We go beyond the surface to explore the early challenges faced by the permaculture movement, including the complexities of merging ecological ethics with economic viability. Discover how significant events and influential figures contributed to the growth and adoption of permaculture in the United States and globally. Even as the movement expanded, it faced internal conflicts and external criticisms, especially regarding the incorporation of Indigenous knowledge and practices. In our final discussions, we tackle the contentious issues of decolonizing permaculture and ensuring it remains scientifically grounded. We scrutinize the movement's relationship with traditional ecological knowledge, the problematic nature of modernizing ancient practices, and the often tokenistic gestures towards Indigenous communities. By highlighting these critical perspectives, we emphasize the need for a more authentic and respectful approach to sustainable living. On this episode, Nate is joined by ‘permaculture' author and educator David Holmgren to discuss his experience within the movement and what it might look like for more systems to be designed using permaculture in the future. While often thought to be an agricultural tool, permaculture thinking is meant for designing human systems to be embedded in nature - an important principle for a future where societies will need to re-synchronize with natural flows. What does it mean for permaculture design to ‘scale up', and how is it different from how we usually think about growing a system? How will permaculture design change as we move through different phases of resource availability? More importantly, how can the ‘small and slow' foundation of permaculture help human societies adapt to a lower throughput future as we navigate The Great Simplification? About David Holmgren  David Holmgren is best known as the co-originator of permaculture. In 1978, he and Bill Mollison published Permaculture One, starting the global permaculture movement. Since then, David has developed three properties, consulted and supervised on urban and rural projects, written eight more books, and presented lectures, workshops and courses in Australia and around the world. His writings over those three decades span a diversity of subjects and issues, whilst always illuminating aspects of permaculture thinking and living. Have you ever noticed that you flush your toilet with the same water that come out of your tap? Have you ever wondered why you pay someone to take away yard waste and then pay for fertilizer? Have you ever wanted to not water your yard so much? Then this episode is especially for you. "The problem is the solution" is a simple conceptual phrase coined by Bill Mollison, the Australian co-creator of the modern Permaculture movement. Often if we take the time to think about it our natural resource problems can often be solutions, either to the problem itself or to another problem that we have. Still confused? Hopefully we explain it a little better in the episode! We also discuss why this concept is important and relevant for natural resource conservation.     LINKS!!! 1) Special thanks to News 5 Cleveland for allowing us to use a an audio clip from their broadcast of the June 2022 tornado in Richland County! For season 4 of Post-Growth Australia Podcast (PGAP), we will be highlighting some extraordinary work being done by extraordinary Western Australians, who are bucking the dominant narrative of exploitation on scale on an ecologically unique yet fragile part of the world. In this episode, we speak to Murray Gomm from Oranje Tractor (https://www.oranjetractor.com/), award winning organic, regenerative and carbon negative winery/small farm holding near Albany. Oranje Tractor certainly punches above its weight. It was the winner of the Gourmet Traveller Wine, Australia's Best Cellar Door Awards 2019. Oranje Tractor Farm was the winner of ACCI's Great Southern Business Awards for Environment and Sustainability in 2019 and was a Case Study for Circular Economy WA in 2022. It has been endorsed by Charles Massy (previous PGAP guest) and visited by then Prince Charles – now king (and not YET a PGAP guest). But how do you produce good quality wine, along with an impressive variety of fruits, nuts and vegetables, in a manner that improves soil integrity and sequesters more carbon than what is emitted? Murray Gomm shares what happens ‘behind the scenes' of how they do it and why Oranje Tractor is capturing the interest and imagination of so many people. Murray also provides some insight into the wider regenerative movement and the agricultural zeitgeist that is slowly beginning to influence new ways of approaching farming in the Great Southern of Western Australia. For the introduction and outro of this episode, Michael is joined by co-host Mark Allen as they pick each other's brain on topics such as: regenerative agriculture and permaculture; progress on the Asbestos campaign (as discussed in the last episode); and the result of SPA's 8 billion competition and the commentary from the mainstream press for 8 billion day, which was reached on the 15th of November. We hear about various detours his career took, and his reflections on these. He discusses the sense of duty he feels as CIO of a Non-Profit that is one of the largest employers in the area, and the pressure to perform, because an operating budget is depending on it. We spend some time discussing how the changing needs of a healthcare institution impact the portfolio and how he has had to flex the portfolio in the current macro environment.  He discusses adding to private credit to enhance income, and the kind of inflation protection that he has built through investing in asset-based infrastructure. We move then to examining the current mix of internal and external managers in the portfolio and how David has managed to achieve high-performance while pursuing certain responsible investing goals.  This gets us to a broader discussion of fees and governance, as well as team motivation and retention, and diversity across the investment world as a whole. We end by returning to some personal reflections and we look at the overlap between parenting skills and tending a portfolio. Over the last decade I've begun to see a subcategory of permaculture learning start to gain attention. As more and more people encounter the principles of this ecological design framework and experiment with different ways of applying it in their lives there's been an emergence of social permaculture to integrate the patterns of nature to tackle inner challenges.  The wonderful book Human Permaculture: Life Design for Resilient Living by Bernard Alonso and Cécile Guiochon was my first introduction into this realm and since then I've wanted to bring an insight into some of the ways that the concepts of Permaculture, which were so influential in my learning almost a decade ago, could be used outside the garden. So on a kind recommendation from David Holmgren, I reached out to Looby Macnamara, a pioneer of personal and social permaculture in the UK. Looby is an author, facilitator, designer, gardener, and mother who has written 4 books; Cultural Emergence, People & Permaculture, 7 Ways to Think Differently and Strands of Infinity. She first came across permaculture in 1999, and was deeply inspired by the collaborative learning environment and the focus on emerging solutions through collective wisdom. Since then she's been deeply immersed in the permaculture movement, and has been a trustee and chair of the Permaculture Association and senior diploma tutor. Looby has been teaching since 2002 and has run many courses including a dozen teacher trainings. In 2016 she set up the Applewood Permaculture Centre with her family, where they run courses and grow food.In this interview, Looby walks me through her journey of learning and development of permaculture principles in the social space and how it can be applied to community dynamics and the concept of cultural emergence. In today's episode I'm going to bring us back to an aspect of strengthening community that I first began to explore in this series with David Holmgren and Charles Marhon. Back then we looked deeply into how suburbs and towns can work at a foundational level to regenerate their communities through civic planning and collaboration through each level of local government.  In today's episode I spoke to Sarah James, the co-author of the book The Natural Step for Communities which provides inspiring examples of communities that have made dramatic changes toward sustainability, and explains how others can emulate their success. Sarah is the principal of a city and town planning consulting firm specializing in participatory planning methods. She co-authored the American Planning Association's Planning for Sustainability Policy guide, and has published articles and given workshops throughout the United States. In this interview Sarah breaks down the natural step framework designed to guide change makers through the process of coordinating positive change through many different aspects of their community. She recounts the inspiration she found in the eco municipalities in Sweden that she visited and the examples that prove that sustainable towns are possible.  We also navigate the obstacles that you're likely to face in the change making process as well as strategies that have been shown to work. We also go into the mindset of successful sustainability leaders, advice for aspiring change makers, some of Sarah's own learnings while teaching these steps, and much more.  If you've been following along since the beginning of the series you'll undoubtedly be picking up on many recurring patterns in the advice and success examples from many of the interviews, and this session with Sarah is a wonderful reinforcement of these important learnings. Ocean regeneration is a rapidly emerging & fascinating area of the regenerative revolution, and in this episode we explore the challenge and the opportunity being taken on by the Climate Foundation, led by Dr. Brian Van Herzen. Together with an international team of scientists, engineers, technicians, social scientists & seaweed farmers, Dr. Van Herzen and his team are working to regenerate thousands of kilometers of lost kelp forest, protect coral reefs, and provide food security for millions of people. Their simple, thoughtfully designed approach involves floating marine permaculture arrays consisting of seaweed/kelp scaffolding and a wave driven or marine solar pump to re-start the natural upwelling that's been disrupted due to heating of the oceans. This is a fascinating and hopeful discussion highlighting a rapidly growing movement and sustainable industry! We learned a ton and know you will too. Show notes: What the current situation in the ocean is & why it needs to be regenerated: Over 90% of global warming has gone into the oceans, which has led to the top layer of ocean water heating up. This prevents natural upwelling, which was one of the major causes of the Permian mass extinction 250 million years ago. By restoring natural upwelling, we make it so kelp, seaweed forests, and coral reefs can stay alive. Bill Mollison's inspiration for permaculture originally came from observing kelp forests off the coast of Tasmania in the 60s! Applying permaculture principles to the sea - look out for upcoming article with David Holmgren on permaculture design for the ocean. Moving from extraction to regeneration while providing food security for billions of people, by creating enviornmentally and economically sustainable industry How marine permaculture arrays are constructed and how they function: seaweed scaffolding & wave driven/marine solar pumps/depth adjustment Addressing scale: How much of this needs to happen how quickly? Fill out this form to receive free trees and planting support as well as a consultation call with Oliver I've had the privilege of being able to travel to many places around the world to design and manage projects for organizations and clients, and the one constant that I find whether it's getting a natural home off the ground, planning an agroforestry plantation, or even remotely consulting with someone on their dream project, is that the community element is the most often overlooked.  Time and time again I've seen projects stall or move backwards because they think they just don't have the monetary or material resources to continue, when in fact it's their social capital which is lacking. On the other side I've seen the power of collaboration overcome shortages of money and institutional support as neighbors and friends offer their creativity, expertise, or even just emotional support to get past the inevitable hurdles that come up.  Despite this, there are far fewer resources and courses in the regenerative fields on how to build social capital, involve and connect your community, or how to apply the patterns of nature to organize people and our institutions.  So today I want to kick off this series by going to the source of permaculture study by speaking to the co-originator of permaculture, David Holmgren.  Back In 1978, he and Bill Mollison published Permaculture One, starting the global permaculture movement. While there are endless things I could ask David about, In this interview we focus on his newest book, RetroSuburbia: the downshifter's guide to a resilient future, his 592-page manual showing how Australians can downshift and retrofit their homes, gardens and selves for resilience into an uncertain future. We talk about why he chose to focus on the suburbs when many people are now looking to abandon them and move to more rural areas.  We explore the potential that there is in retrofitting the infrastructure of peri urban environments that were poorly designed and the source of much wasteful energy and material use. This is a wide ranging conversation that explores the evolution of permaculture, various cohabitation arrangements, getting around strict regulations, and much more.
