They eat alpine marshwort found in ephemeral wetlands and enjoy basking in the sun to help regulate their body temperature. Males find females through pheromones and use their furry comb-like antenna to locate them. This year, they came first in the 2026 Bug of the Year competition, with an overwhelming 5192 votes! The Avatar moth is "Nationally Critical" under the New Zealand Threat Classification System.

These speedy little flyers are found all over the country and are also shared with some parts of Australia. They resemble the red admiral butterfly, except for the bright yellow patches on the upper wings. The caterpillars depend on nettle to survive, and the dwindling host plants, as well as impacts from introduced predators is having an effect on their population numbers. As such, the Moths and Butterflies of New Zealand Trust launched the Big Butterfly Count last year to find out more information on numbers of butterfly populations around the country. It is happening right now from the 9-20 February.

Washed up seaweed might look unimportant to us, but rotting seaweed is a crucial haven for animals such as the seaweed darkling beetle. The decaying seaweed provides both shelter and sustenance, allowing them to inhabit a narrow zone of the intertidal environment. This bubble-shaped beetle exists in varying colour morphs, with light colour forms living on white sand beaches, while darker colour forms live on black sand beaches. This cryptic colour match to their sandy substrate allows them to avoid being dinner from predators such as banded dotterels, oyster catchers and gulls!
In today's episode, host Emily Kwong leads us on a night hike in Patuxent River State Park in Maryland. Alongside a group of naturalists led by Serenella Linares, we'll meet a variety of species with unique survival quirks and wintertime adaptations. We'll search out lichen that change color under UV light and flip over a wet log to track a salamander keeping warm under wet leaves. Emily may even meet the bioluminescent mushrooms of her dreams. Plus, we talk about community events to get outside, such as the City Nature Challenge and Great American Campout.Do you have a question about changes in your local environment? Did you know we have nine mistletoes native to New Zealand? Meet Peraxilla tetrapetala, the endemic red mistletoe! They are especially slow growing and rely on birds such as tui and bellbirds for pollination and seed dispersal. The flowers have an explosive bud opening mechanism triggered by birds when they try to get to the nectar inside. Unlike its overseas cousins, this mistletoe is endangered due to possum browsing, habitat decline and low bird numbers and should not be collected!

Jesse and Forest and Bird's Nicola Toki discuss this week's critter of the week is the beautiful and emblematic Turbott's Weevil. These large, flightless and nocturnal weevils were likely once widespread throughout mainland New Zealand but are now confined to predator-free islands like Aorangi Poor Knights Islands. Not much is known about their biology, and their small population means they are considered 'At Risk' in the New Zealand Threat Classification system. They are also one of a handful on invertebrates listed as protected under the Wildlife Act.

On Tuesday night we held a Critter of the Week live event to celebrate ten years of talking endangered species. Nicola Toki Forest and Bird's Chief Executive and I chatted in front of a live audience, but we didn't want you to miss out - so we're playing some of the conversation for you today. We've heard about the grossest critters which were like something out of a horror film, so to cleanse our palettes, Jesse also asked Forest and Bird CEO Nicola Toki about the most beautiful ones.
Earlier this week we held a special event in Auckland celebrating a decade of Critter of the Week. Forest and Bird Chief Executive Nicola Toki and Jesse sat in front of a live audience to chat about critters and conservation. We so appreciate the people who took part - in person or watching via the livestream - and it was such a terrific evening we thought we should share it with our radio audience too.

Jesse chats to Forest and Bird Chief Executive about this week's critter. Huberia striata belongs to the only fully New Zealand endemic genus of ant. Widespread throughout Aotearoa, they nest underground in native bush. Like other ant species, they are known to farm plant hoppers and scale insects by keeping them safe in their nest and then milking them for their sweet honeydew secretions. Their name comes from the fact that their body is covered in long thin lines (striations), making them look wrinkly!

The critter of the week is the water spider, Dolomedes aquaticus! This spider has a special affinity with water, spending most of their time near braided rivers. Dolomedes spiders are also called fishing spiders due to their unique method of capturing prey. They put their legs out in the water like a fishing line, feeling for the tell-tale vibrations of a struggling insect fallen in the water. Once they've honed in on their quarry, they'll quickly pounce to subdue their target. The short velvety hairs covering their body allows them to trap air and walk across the water through surface tension or even go underwater for up to 30 mins!

So many of us (pet parents and pros) get tangled up in “shoulds”. My dog should behave better. I should know how to fix this.People shouldn't think my dog is “bad.”But what if some of the hardest parts of living with our pets aren't really about their behavior… but about the pressure we put on ourselves? In this episode of Enrichment for the Real World, Emily and Tiffany unpack how our beliefs about control and perfection can make the whole family miserable, and how giving our pets agency and ourselves grace can bring the joy back.TLDL (too long, didn't listen): 1️⃣ Let Go of Perfection – So much stress with our pets comes from our own expectations. When we stop trying to be the “perfect” pet parent and allow room for mistakes (theirs and ours), we create more joy and less shame for everyone involved.2️⃣ Let Dog Be Dog – Dogs are beasty beasts. They are real animals with real emotions. They're not little furry humans or obedience robots. Giving them agency, honoring their full range of feelings, and embracing their quirks helps build trust and connection.3️⃣ Play, Curiosity, and Chaos Are Healthy – Enrichment isn't just prescriptive, structured activities. Enrichment is curiosity, communication, and shared silliness. Lean into the chaos, celebrate the weird moments, and remember that play and joy are just as important as training plans. For the full episode show notes, including the resources mentioned in this episode, go here.More from Pet HarmonyPet Parents: enrichment ideas and practical behavior tips
Tim and Eric Vogel went to see Sasquatch: The Legend of Bigfoot in the winter of 1976, when they were in their teens. Seeing that movie really sparked their interest in Sasquatch. About a month after seeing that movie, during a big snowstorm, something happened one morning that completely set the hook in them, with regards to their interest in the topic. The storm had dropped about 28 inches of snow on the area where Tim and Eric lived, in Western Massachusetts, and when the looked out their window that morning, they saw a horde of people in their driveway. There were Bigfoot investigators, news reporters, and other people out there who were focused on a trail of big tracks that led across their property. It turned out to be a hoax that a kid in their area had been responsible, but the damage was already done. Tim and Eric couldn't get enough of the Bigfoot topic. It should come as no surprise that Tim and Eric decided to become Sasquatch investigators, years later and form Vogel Brothers Sasquatch Investigations. On tonight's show, Tim and Eric are going to share numerous sightings and experiences they've had. We hope you'll tune in and listen to them do that. What happens when two lifelong outdoorsmen follow a braided Adirondack stream to a beaver dam—hook a bass—and the forest erupts? In this high-intensity episode, Tim and Eric Vogel revisit a harrowing 2013 encounter: two trees shaking like snow globes, a nonstop roar that thumped their chests, and the chilling realization they'd crashed a Sasquatch fishing operation. We also dive into a class-A moment at Balance Rock in Savoy State Forest in Massachusetts—an eight-to-nine-foot figure, a 17.5-inch track, and a warning roar that followed the team back in—plus a daytime “white Bigfoot” sighting along Cobble Mountain Reservoir, and a remote Connecticut ridge where a siren-like scream lit up the night before a rock crashed through the canopy.
