Earlier this week we held a special event in Auckland celebrating a decade of Critter of the Week. Forest and Bird Chief Executive Nicola Toki and Jesse sat in front of a live audience to chat about critters and conservation. We so appreciate the people who took part - in person or watching via the livestream - and it was such a terrific evening we thought we should share it with our radio audience too.

On Tuesday night we held a Critter of the Week live event to celebrate ten years of talking endangered species. Jesse chats to Forest and Bird Chief Executive about this week's critter. Huberia striata belongs to the only fully New Zealand endemic genus of ant. Widespread throughout Aotearoa, they nest underground in native bush. Like other ant species, they are known to farm plant hoppers and scale insects by keeping them safe in their nest and then milking them for their sweet honeydew secretions. Their name comes from the fact that their body is covered in long thin lines (striations), making them look wrinkly!

The critter of the week is the water spider, Dolomedes aquaticus! This spider has a special affinity with water, spending most of their time near braided rivers. Dolomedes spiders are also called fishing spiders due to their unique method of capturing prey. They put their legs out in the water like a fishing line, feeling for the tell-tale vibrations of a struggling insect fallen in the water. Once they've honed in on their quarry, they'll quickly pounce to subdue their target. The short velvety hairs covering their body allows them to trap air and walk across the water through surface tension or even go underwater for up to 30 mins!

Tim and Eric Vogel went to see Sasquatch: The Legend of Bigfoot in the winter of 1976, when they were in their teens. Seeing that movie really sparked their interest in Sasquatch. About a month after seeing that movie, during a big snowstorm, something happened one morning that completely set the hook in them, with regards to their interest in the topic. The storm had dropped about 28 inches of snow on the area where Tim and Eric lived, in Western Massachusetts, and when the looked out their window that morning, they saw a horde of people in their driveway. There were Bigfoot investigators, news reporters, and other people out there who were focused on a trail of big tracks that led across their property. It turned out to be a hoax that a kid in their area had been responsible, but the damage was already done. Tim and Eric couldn't get enough of the Bigfoot topic. It should come as no surprise that Tim and Eric decided to become Sasquatch investigators, years later and form Vogel Brothers Sasquatch Investigations. On tonight's show, Tim and Eric are going to share numerous sightings and experiences they've had. The critter for this week is the Astelia Lacebug - Tanybyrsa cumberi. This pretty little critter is the only one of its family endemic to New Zealand. They have beautiful delicate wings which resemble lace (think your grandma's favourite doily) and gives them their common name. These tiny critters are common throughout Aotearoa, living only on Astelia plants. Forest and Bird Chief Executive Nicola Toki rates this critter with Jesse.

242. The Ridgeline Critter

Jesse spoke to Forest and Bird Chief Executive Nicola Toki about it.

This week's critter is the New Zealand Dobsonfly (Archichauliodes diversus). They are the only representing species of this group in New Zealand. These insects are unusual, spending most of their life in their aquatic juvenile form. As adults, they live only for around 6-10 days with the sole purpose of finding a mate and procreating, not even stopping to feed. The larvae are known as toe-biters due to their large, serrated mandibles which they use to catch anything that get close to them! They have tentacle-like appendages on the sides of the body, but these are actually their gills! They are common throughout New Zealand and thrive in stony streams with good water quality. Jesse spoke to Forest and Bird's Chief Executive Nicola Toki.

This week's critter is small but very fierce! The Northland Tusked Weta is around 2 cm in size, they are a beautiful orange-brown colour with bands along the back. These little critters live in small tunnels of trees during the day, plugging up the entryway with their own special mix of saliva and wood dust. This can make them incredibly hard to find, if they are not out and about munching on other small creatures during the night.
