Nicola Toki and Jesse discuss the Moehau stag beetle as this week's critter of the week. These beetles measure between 2.1 to 2.7 cm, with males reaching 2.7 cm while the females top out at 2.3 cm. They are black in colour, which can be glossy or dull. Their exoskeleton has tiny indentations which makes them appear pitted.

Iolanthe cicadas are one of our smallest cicada species, found in the North Island from the Coromandel Peninsula to Wellington. This species has become extremely rare in the wild and there are very few modern sightings or recordings. Males have a very high-pitched song used for calling females. Because of the high frequency of the song, some adults may not be able to hear the call at all. Due to its lack of sightings, its threat status is unknown. However, its rarity is worrying, especially with no information on their ecology and population density. Nicola Toki chats all things critters with Jesse.

This week's critter of the week is the waka leafhopper. As the name would suggest, these tiny leafhoppers look like miniature waka. They measure under 1cm and are light brown in colour. Endemic to Aotearoa, they live in wetlands and salt marshes in close association with their host plants which are wire rush and oioi (jointed rush). Their unique appearance allows them to blend into their surroundings and avoid notice from predators.

The critter of the week is the newly crowned Bug of the Year 2026, the Avatar moth! This beautiful day-flying moth is only found on the Denniston Plateau, from 640 to 850m. They eat alpine marshwort found in ephemeral wetlands and enjoy basking in the sun to help regulate their body temperature. Males find females through pheromones and use their furry comb-like antenna to locate them. This year, they came first in the 2026 Bug of the Year competition, with an overwhelming 5192 votes! The Avatar moth is "Nationally Critical" under the New Zealand Threat Classification System.

These speedy little flyers are found all over the country and are also shared with some parts of Australia. They resemble the red admiral butterfly, except for the bright yellow patches on the upper wings. The caterpillars depend on nettle to survive, and the dwindling host plants, as well as impacts from introduced predators is having an effect on their population numbers. As such, the Moths and Butterflies of New Zealand Trust launched the Big Butterfly Count last year to find out more information on numbers of butterfly populations around the country. It is happening right now from the 9-20 February.
