Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow went on a 21-month long crime spree along with the “Barrow Gang” in the 1930s, committing 12 murders and many robberies, car thefts, and kidnappings. On May 23rd, 1934, the couple was ambushed with over 100 bullet holes marking their car, which is on display in Nevada to this day. After their deaths, a movie was released about the couple, romanticizing their lives and crimes - but they were bandits and serial killers that are still referenced to this day.  Click here to join our Patreon.  Connect with us on Instagram and join our Facebook group.  To submit listener stories or case suggestions, and to see all sources for this episode: https://www.inhumanpodcast.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were Depression Era outlaws who are just known by their first names. They have been romanticized as young lovers who stood by each other and lived life on their own terms. But in reality, Clyde was a thief and a murderer and Bonnie was his willing accomplice. For just over two years they went on a crime spree in the early 1930s robbing and killing. They were finally stopped when a 6 man posse headed by a former Texas Ranger shot and killed them with over 100 bullets, execution style, on a country road in Louisiana.

Perhaps some of the most recognizable American photos of the early 20th century. A young woman poses in front of a car with a cigar between her teeth and a gun on her hip. In another she points a rifle at the chest of a man who stares back at her without fear. Bonnie and Clyde made headlines in ways few couples have before or will again. There have been films, tv series, books, Broadway musicals, and even psychology terms based off of their story. But as is too often the case with media celebrities today, the real people behind the famous photos, hollywood films and power ballads are far more elusive. In addition, because of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker's fame as a couple, it can be difficult to see or imagine the individuals involved in the 21 month crime spree. Bonnie herself has been called a criminal, attention seeker, murderer, romantic, and a modern Robin Hood. Today she is far more of an American legend than a real flesh and blood woman. Special Guest: Jenni Walsh, author of novels Becoming Bonnie and Side by Side that provide a raw look into the life of Bonnie and Clyde told in the voice of the woman who experienced it all. Learn more about your ad choices. July 30, 2023 - What did service in the World Wars mean to women who found new opportunities to enter the workforce and join the fight as never before? We'll go on a fictional ride with one of those service members with today's novelist, Jenni Walsh. Her novel is “The Call of the Wrens,” the third she joined us to discuss after her debut, “Becoming Bonnie,” and its sequel, “Side By Side,” about “the crash of the century,” when Bonnie Parker met Clyde Barrow. You can find those conversations in our archives wherever you enjoy the show or via the links above. In “The Call of the Wrens,” Jenni introduces us to the women of Britain's Women's Royal Naval Service who are shaped by service in the Great War and twenty years later in World War Two, when they're confronted by a life-changing moment that they meet head on at 70 miles an hour. It's a vivid, emotional saga of love, secrets, resilience—and the knowledge that the future will always belong to the brave souls who fight for it. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were two of the most notorious outlaws in American history, forever linked to the public consciousness.  They were young, daring, and dangerous, and they captured the imagination of a country struggling through the Great Depression. But behind the legend lay the harsh reality of their lives, a story of poverty, violence, and desperation. They met in Dallas, Texas, and were immediately drawn to each other.  Together, Bonnie and Clyde embarked on a crime spree that would capture the nation's attention and make them both into legends. They robbed banks, gas stations, and stores across the South and Midwest, always staying one step ahead of the law.  The outlaw lovers became folk heroes to many Americans who were struggling to survive amid the Great Depression, seen as modern-day Robin Hoods who were sticking it to the wealthy and powerful. Today, Bonnie, pictured in a beret and flapper-style dress with a cigar stuck out the side of her mouth, would be described as a rebellious fashionista.  Clyde wore suits and ties with a fedora cocked on his head. The glamorous image captured in photographs of the outlaw couple taken by members of their gang riveted American newspapers. But for Bonnie and Clyde, the fame came at a cost. They were constantly on the run, never able to settle down and live a normal life. They always looked over their shoulders, afraid the law would catch up. As their crimes became more violent and their notoriety grew, Bonnie and Clyde began attracting the attention of law enforcement agencies nationwide. Texas Ranger Frank Hamer hunted them for staging a deadly escape from the Eastham Prison Farm. Their day of reckoning came on May 23, 1934, in Louisiana, where Ranger Hamer lured them into a deadly ambush. Crowd Gathers Outside McKamy Campbell Funeral Home In Dallas Clamoring To See The Open Casket Holding Bonnie Parker in May 1935 More than fifty thousand people came to see their open caskets at two funeral homes in Dallas.  In death, the legend of their crimes and love affair grew, immortalized in magazines, books, and movies.  Investigative reporter Robert Riggs separates facts from fiction in this episode. This episode covers the life of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow through the last half of their crime spree from late 1933 to their death by ambush on May 23, 1934. Bonnie had never killed- but the newspapers and the FBI took the account of one bad witness to convict her or murder-and the fact that she had been an enabler and solid accomplice was enough to put her away for a long time. We also devote a section at the end to the FBI and their successful attempts to bring down a number of "Most Wanted" persons in 1934. We include the last days of John Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, and Baby Face Nelson, all in 1934 here as well. The death of Bonnie & Clyde marked the end of the road for many notorious outlaws of the 30's. According to legend, they were star-struck lovers who traipsed across the middle of America and the South, holding up banks to “stick it to the man.” The 1967 movie Bonnie and Clyde, directed by Arthur Penn and starring Warren Beatty (possible future Creep episode) and Faye Dunaway, was a sexed-up Hollywood version of their affair. In real life, they were murderous losers who took 11 lives, kidnapped several people and dropped them off hundreds of miles from home to evade the police, mainly robbed small businesses like gas stations and grocery stores, and put out shitty poetry. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow may be the more infamous, "Killer Couple," but, there's another couple in this story who deserve to be just as notorious: Clyde's brother, Buck, and his wife, Blanche. Banditry need not be a boy's club. Forget the Bloody Barrow Brothers for a moment. Bonnie and Blanche are badass, action anti-heroes in their own right. Listen to Bonnie and Blanche go to the mattresses. In, "Wheels, Barrows & Blood," PART THREE. Only on Kinda Murdery.

May 23rd, 1934. The small town of Gibsland, LA. It's nine a.m.  A well-known couple in love and crime are gunned down in their stolen, 1934 Ford Model 730 Deluxe Sedan. For twenty-one months these two, along with others in the Barrow Gang, had gone from state to state, robbing, stealing, and killing authorities and innocent people. The stuff of legends, their story has been depicted in songs, plays, books and at least eleven movies—some even produced by J Edgar Hoover himself. They were the loves of each others lives. Inseparable, these two would go down in a hail of bullets together. Early in the morning on May 23rd, 1934. A car sped down a country road, heading towards Sailes, Louisiana when gunmen suddenly opened fire. The driver, a twenty-five-year old man, was struck in the head, killing him instantly, and the woman beside him screamed. The men hiding in the bushes didn't stop shooting. The car crashed into a ditch and almost rolled over. The gunmen ran themselves out of ammo but only after both people in the car were without a doubt, dead. But why, and what made this particular couple so dangerous? The gunmen were a crew led by a Texas Ranger named Frank Hamer, and he had been chasing the couple for months… the infamous Bonnie and Clyde. (NOTE: In this episode, I accidently called Clyde Barrow, Clyde Parker once. And thoughout, I called Frank Hamer, Frank Hammer. My brain was subconciously trying to make his name sound cooler. Sorry about that.) Subscribe and share 10 Minute Murder with your true crime loving friends. The story of Bonnie and Clyde is one of the most well known stories of a criminal couple in the entire world. It's become so romanticized that people tell it as if it was a beautiful love story, when in reality, it's the story of a boy who murdered anyone in his path so he didn't have to work for what he got and girl so codependent, she refuses to leave him.
