Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were two of the most notorious outlaws in American history, forever linked to the public consciousness.  They were young, daring, and dangerous, and they captured the imagination of a country struggling through the Great Depression. But behind the legend lay the harsh reality of their lives, a story of poverty, violence, and desperation. They met in Dallas, Texas, and were immediately drawn to each other.  Together, Bonnie and Clyde embarked on a crime spree that would capture the nation's attention and make them both into legends. They robbed banks, gas stations, and stores across the South and Midwest, always staying one step ahead of the law.  The outlaw lovers became folk heroes to many Americans who were struggling to survive amid the Great Depression, seen as modern-day Robin Hoods who were sticking it to the wealthy and powerful. Today, Bonnie, pictured in a beret and flapper-style dress with a cigar stuck out the side of her mouth, would be described as a rebellious fashionista.  Clyde wore suits and ties with a fedora cocked on his head. The glamorous image captured in photographs of the outlaw couple taken by members of their gang riveted American newspapers. But for Bonnie and Clyde, the fame came at a cost. They were constantly on the run, never able to settle down and live a normal life. They were always looking over their shoulders, afraid that the law would catch up with them. As their crimes became more violent and their notoriety grew, Bonnie and Clyde began attracting the attention of law enforcement agencies nationwide. Texas Ranger Frank Hamer hunted them for staging a deadly escape from the Eastham Prison Farm. Their day of reckoning came on May 23, 1934, in Louisiana, where Ranger Hamer lured them into a deadly ambush. More than fifty thousand people came to see their open caskets at two funeral homes in Dallas.  In death, the legend of their crimes and love affair grew, immortalized in magazines, books, and movies.  Investigative reporter Robert Riggs separates facts from fiction in this episode. For listeners who want to learn more, he recommends Bonnie and Clyde: The Making Of A Legend by Dallas journalist and author Karen Blumenthal.  Photographs mentioned in the podcast can be viewed at True Crime Reporter® We want to become your favorite true crime podcast. From 1932 to 1934, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were perhaps the best-known outlaws in the United States.  It was during the Great Depression that Bonnie and Clyde rose to fame for their daring bank heists and Robin Hood-esque crimes.  Hollywood glamorized them as a young couple in love, but in their time on the run, they left a trail of death and destruction in their path and are believed to be responsible for the deaths of four civilians and nine police officers.  Their story came to an abrupt end at the hands of authorities in May of 1934, when they were only 23 and 25 years old.   ***TRIGGER WARNING*** Murder - Gun Violence - Robbery - Self Mutilation - Mentions of Sexual Assault Hang with us: Follow Us on Instagram Like Us on Facebook Join our Case Discussion Group on Facebook Get Killer Queens Merch Bonus Episodes Support Our AMAZING Sponsors: ZocDoc: Go to Zocdoc.com/QUEENS and download the Zocdoc app for FREE. This episode covers the life of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow through the last half of their crime spree from late 1933 to their death by ambush on May 23, 1934. Bonnie had never killed- but the newspapers and the FBI took the account of one bad witness to convict her or murder-and the fact that she had been an enabler and solid accomplice was enough to put her away for a long time. We also devote a section at the end to the FBI and their successful attempts to bring down a number of "Most Wanted" persons in 1934. We include the last days of John Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, and Baby Face Nelson, all in 1934 here as well. The death of Bonnie & Clyde marked the end of the road for many notorious outlaws of the 30's. What a CreepSeason 19, Episode 3Bonnie & Clyde(Crooks & Murderers Elevated to Icon Status)Bonnie Elizabeth Parker (Bonnie Parker) & Clyde Chestnut (Champion) Barrow were Depression-era outlaws who caught the nation's attention between 1932-1934 with their antics. According to legend, they were star-struck lovers who traipsed across the middle of America and the South, holding up banks to “stick it to the man.” The 1967 movie Bonnie and Clyde, directed by Arthur Penn and starring Warren Beatty (possible future Creep episode) and Faye Dunaway, was a sexed-up Hollywood version of their affair. In real life, they were murderous losers who took 11 lives, kidnapped several people and dropped them off hundreds of miles from home to evade the police, mainly robbed small businesses like gas stations and grocery stores, and put out shitty poetry. May 23rd, 1934. The small town of Gibsland, LA. It's nine a.m.  A well-known couple in love and crime are gunned down in their stolen, 1934 Ford Model 730 Deluxe Sedan. For twenty-one months these two, along with others in the Barrow Gang, had gone from state to state, robbing, stealing, and killing authorities and innocent people. The stuff of legends, their story has been depicted in songs, plays, books and at least eleven movies—some even produced by J Edgar Hoover himself. They were the loves of each others lives. Inseparable, these two would go down in a hail of bullets together. The Texas outlaw couple Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker roamed the South and Midwest on their crime spree from 1932 to 1934 during the Great Depression. But it doesn't appear they ever made it to North Dakota. A bank robbery in 1933 in southern Minnesota is attributed to the Barrow gang, and their exploits were front-page news in The Bismarck Tribune, including the breakout of inmates at a Texas prison farm in 1934.

Early in the morning on May 23rd, 1934. A car sped down a country road, heading towards Sailes, Louisiana when gunmen suddenly opened fire. The driver, a twenty-five-year old man, was struck in the head, killing him instantly, and the woman beside him screamed. The men hiding in the bushes didn't stop shooting. The car crashed into a ditch and almost rolled over. The gunmen ran themselves out of ammo but only after both people in the car were without a doubt, dead. But why, and what made this particular couple so dangerous? The gunmen were a crew led by a Texas Ranger named Frank Hamer, and he had been chasing the couple for months… the infamous Bonnie and Clyde. (NOTE: In this episode, I accidently called Clyde Barrow, Clyde Parker once. And thoughout, I called Frank Hamer, Frank Hammer. My brain was subconciously trying to make his name sound cooler. Your Turn.

After a hugely acclaimed 2 shows in the Bonnie & Clyde the Musical concert, George Maguire is preparing to return to the role of Buck Barrow in Frank Wildhorn's beloved show. Reuniting with Nick Winston, the director of the sell-out Theatre Royal, Drury Lane concerts, George will be reprising his role in the new limited run of Bonnie & Clyde at the Arts Theatre from 9 April. There is already much anticipation around this new production from musical theatre fans, especially after the success of the concert earlier in the year. The upcoming run will also see the return of Natalie McQueen as Blanche Barrow and Frances Mayli McCann as Bonnie Parker. West End star Jordan Luke Gage will also be joining the cast as the eponymous Clyde Barrow and musical theatre fans are preparing to be wowed once more by the show. In this special interview, George Maguire sat down to talk about his love for Frank Wildhorn and his intrigue from the story of Bonnie & Clyde. Fresh from his run in The Wicker Husband at the Watermill Theatre, George tells us about his excitement at returning to London's West End to bring this show to audiences for a full run. A veteran performer, George Maguire has starred in shows such as Thrill Me, Hair, Oliver and won the Olivier Award for his role as Dave Davies in Sunny Afternoon. He earned huge praise from audiences and critics for his portrayal of Buck Barrow and we  expect his performance to be another highlight of Nick Winston's production. In the interview, George also reflects candidly on the real life story of Bonnie & Clyde, acknowledging the victims of their crimes and reminds listeners that these characters aren't necessarily "heroes" either. Nevertheless, with the ongoing popularity of true crime stories, we expect this production to be a huge hit and can't wait see George Maguire's performance.Bonnie & Clyde runs at the Arts Theatre, London from 9 April - 10 July. Welcome to December 26th, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the flavor of the season and etiquette for everyone.  Peppermint sticks have been around for at least 200 years, but the red and white striped candy cane that we all associate with Christmas did not actually appear until 1900. Many folklore tales describe the symbolism behind this iconic treat which was made by hand until 1921. That's when Brasher O. Westerfield invented a machine that turned out the 5” peppermint canes. And that's a good thing as these days we produce more than a billion every year. Today you can find candy canes in almost any flavor, though peppermint is still the perennial favorite. On National Candy Cane Day, we invite you to savor the flavor of the season. One day in 1934, Henry Ford opened his mail and got a big surprise, a thank you note from one of America's most infamous bank robbers. Clyde Barrow wrote to thank Ford for putting out such a quality car. Or as he put it, “For sustained speed and freedom from trouble, the Ford has got every other car beat… It don't hurt anything to tell you what a fine car you got in the V8.” Today is a good day to surprise your family and friends with letters of your own. Thank them for their holiday gifts or their general love and support. And since handwritten messages are becoming a lost art, surprise them even more by putting pen to paper. On National Thank You Note Day, show people that you care enough to go the extra mile to acknowledge their generosity. For years, Hollywood has glamorized some not-so-glamorous people.  If the tale is “based on a true story” you can guarantee the real subject probably didn't look like Johnny Depp or Tom Cruise.  The same goes for one infamous duo, the first true ride or die couple, Bonnie and Clyde.  Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow terrorized police and the public for a couple years during a crime spree that would go on to become one of pop culture's biggest references.  But, between some self-mutilation, prison rape, car wrecks, and gonorrhea, the duo's journey wasn't as Hollywood as it's been made out to be.  But what drove them to a life of crime?  Were they really both the cold-blooded, outlaw killers they've been made out to be?  We'll dive into these questions and more in this episode of AHC Podcast.         Intro music credit: [No Copyright Sound] Old School, Gangsta Beat - Aries Beats - [ FREE USE MUSIC, Vlogs, Piano ] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmh1N1HsI48     Citations: Blatty, D. While much has been written and discussed regarding the impact of neoliberal philosophies/practices on contemporary higher education, far less available are compelling interpretations of the circumstance linked directly to practical responses. That is where Professor Clyde W. Barrow and his work stand out. Barrow's impressive array of scholarly contributions includes the 2019 book, The Entrepreneurial Intellectual in the Corporate University (Palgrave Macmillan). In a series of essays, Professor Barrow offers a contrarian take to dominant views of how to attack institutional neoliberalism in higher education. Barrow argues that it is necessary to stop viewing college/university institutionally as the focal point for change efforts. That's because bureaucratic structures and cultural practices–endemic to the corporatization and politicization of higher education–“thwart and suppress” those efforts. Instead, Barrow contends that faculty should conduct a good share of their work in self-organized/-governed enclaves situated beyond the boundaries of traditional structures, such as schools, departments, and colleges. While actualizing that outcome requires boundary-spanning leadership (skill, creativity, persistence, and administrative endorsement), Barrow's own experience at UMass Dartmouth shows that it can be done successfully. In addition, that approach “does not require a massive social movement to initiate.” Professor Barrow chairs the Department of Political Science at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He received his Ph.D. in political science at UCLA and served earlier (1987-2014) in various academic/administrative roles at UMass Dartmouth. Barrow is joined by dean and vice president Fred Poston, emeritus, Michigan State University. Known for creating space for interdisciplinary and cross-campus initiatives, Poston focuses in this session on work associated with spearheading MSU's sustainable campus initiative. The program is hosted by Professor/Director Rubén Martinez. Professor emeritus Frank Fear serves as discussant. (This program was organized and produced by FutureU, Conversation about Values and Change in Higher Education).
