We all know you need money to make money but you also need to "bank" money to use it especially as our world becomes more reliant on technology and touch-free. However, many lower-income, immigrants, and even young people do not have access to traditional financial services like banks. This week's guest, Capway founder Sheena Allen, hopes to change this for the “underbanked” by restoring trust in and a fair banking system with her latest app. Allen, a serial entrepreneur at heart, grew up in a small town with one bank. As a result, the people in her community, including family and friends, would keep their money in their home or use other fee-heavy alternative banking options. She created her very first app with little tech experience and has since developed into an app machine, with five apps under her belt to date. In 2016, Allen had the idea to create the app and digital bank, Capway, which gave Sheena the title as the youngest female in America to own and operate a digital bank. The fintech company connects underserved millennials and Gen Z to today's cashless economy. In today’s interview, I wanted to focus on the companies a little more and their experiences.  As such, we dig into the following questions: What’s been their biggest failure (or challenge) to date? How do reach out to the partner companies? In essence, they all have to work with large financial companies in some way.  How do they reach out and start the conversations to gain ‘traction’. Have they hard startup experience in the past and if so what did they learn from those previous experiences that is helping them today? What is the camaraderie like in the class? Is there fighting within the program or do they support and help each other? What is success for each company? Are they raising money? Thom has ton of experience in the startup world and developing/nurturing the ecosystems supporting them.  As such we dive into the role of NC IDEA, what programs they run, more about Tom’s history and what brought him here. The under-banked have been under-served for a long time?  What are the challenges ahead for Capway? What challenges are ahead for Qoins as they ramp up and deliver a great tool to help their users pay off their debt? Part of the challenge of being a startup is the education component?  How are these companies educating their potential customers/users? What are they getting out of the program? Who is the best ping-pong player in the class (hint: it sounds like Christian was de-throned but thinks he can earn it back). Sheena Allen is not your typical tech success story. Her background wasn't in programming or coding but she was able to build an app company from sketches in her notebook. Today in the guest chair we have a woman I consider the queen of apps. Her name is Sheena Allen and she is a tech entrepreneur. She started her first company in 2011 as a senior at the University of South Mississippi. At the time, she had no tech background and was a psychology and film major and on a whim decided to launch a mobile application company. Giving herself a year to see if she would see any success with her company, Sheena Allen Applications, she eventually found that success with app #3, Dubblen. In fact, three months after launching the app for Android, Dubblen received over 500,000 downloads. That year, 2013, Sheena made the decision to leave Mississippi and move to a tech-hub to find mentor and increase her knowledge in the tech space. Since then, she has gone on to experience frustration with raising money and the predatory lending practices in Silicon Valley, Sheena decided to fight back through the launch of a second startup, CapWay. CapWay is financial company that focuses on the unbanked and underbanked. The service offers financial literacy content and onboards unbanked users to get a bank account.She has been featured in various publications, including Forbes.com, BlackEnterprise.com, and EBONY Magazine. In late 2016, Sheena made her premiere in She Started It, a documentary film that follows five women around on their startup journey.
