Interviews by Brainard Carey

Tim with Nurse Tracy in progress Tim Okamura investigates identity, the urban environment, metaphor, and cultural iconography through a unique method of painting - one that combines an essentially ‘realist’ approach to the figure with collage, spray paint and mixed media. The juxtaposition of the rawness and urgency of street art and academic ideals has created a visual language that acknowledges a traditional form of story-telling through portraiture, while infusing the work with resonant contemporary motifs. Born in Edmonton, Canada, painter Tim Okamura earned a B.F.A. with Distinction at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, Canada before moving to New York City to attend the School of Visual Arts in 1991. After graduating with an M.F.A. in Illustration as Visual Journalism, Okamura moved to Brooklyn, New York, where he continues to live and work. Tim Okamura - a recipient of the 2004 Fellowship in Painting from the New York Foundation for the Arts – has exhibited extensively in galleries throughout the world, including the U.S., Canada, Italy, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Ecuador and Turkey, and has been selected nine times to appear in the prestigious BP Portrait Award Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London, England. In 2006, Okamura was short-listed by the Royal Surveyor of the Queen’s Picture Collection for a commissioned portrait of the Queen of England. In 2013, the University of North Carolina hosted a retrospective exhibition of Okamura’s work that focused on nearly a decade of production. Okamura received an invitation to The White House in the Fall of 2015 to honor artists whose work addresses issues of social justice – there he received a letter of commendation from Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden. Okamura’s painting titled “I Love Your Hair” was selected in 2016 for inclusion in the “American Portraiture Today” exhibition, featured at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. and subsequently toured museums across the United States. Several of Okamura’s works were recently featured in the “Still I Rise” exhibition at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art. Tim Okamura’s art is on display in the permanent collections of the Davis Museum at Wellesley College, Jiménez Colón Museum in Puerto Rico, The Sonja Haynes Stone Center for Black Culture and History at the University of North Carolina, The Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Toronto Congress Center, the Hotel Arts in Calgary, Canada, and Standard Chartered Bank in London, England. Collectors include Uma Thurman, Meg Ryan, John Mellencamp, DJ Black Coffee, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, athletes Courtney Lee and PK Subban, director Ben Younger, and actors Bryan Greenberg, Hill Harper, Annabella Sciorra, and Spike Lee. L A Weekly-Best of LA, Best Cinema Smorgasbords. “The Pan African Film Festival has been honing and refining itself for years now, slowly evolving into its if-you-can-only-attend-one-L.A.-film-festival-then-this-is-the-one status. Films from across Africa, Australia, the Americas, and Europe are seamlessly woven into its expansive programming mix. Even the higher end of television fare is carefully fitted into the already packed cinematic queue. What makes the festival especially important–and not just a fun, cool happening-is the staggeringly broad range of black life and cultures to which it gives rein. Industry panels and workshops, art fairs with a special emphasis on children, and poetry and musical performances round out the filmic offerings. At a time when reductive and reactionary Negritude oozes from both the independent and mainstream American film worlds, the Pan African casts its net far and wide to serve up a delectable menu of dynamic, multilayered blackness.” Ernest Hardy (film critic, LA Weekly and New York Village Voice) PAFF collaborates with other festivals from around the world, giving us an audience that is truly local, national and international. Not only are we the largest and most prestigious black film festival in America but PAFF-LA is the largest Black History Month event in the US during the month of February. PAFF is the quintessential Black festival.   Book Vs Movie  Beloved The Toni Morrison Pulitzer Prize-Winning Novel Vs. the Oprah Winfrey Movie   It’s African American History Month and the Margos are eager to start with Toni Morrison’s 1987 widely-acclaimed novel Beloved which was turned into a movie with the help of Oprah Winfrey in 1998.  This novel is a story about an escaped slave, Sethe (played by Winfrey in the film) who when was threatened with capture, killed her daughter rather than have her face a life of being in chains.  Her other children survive and eventually, they live a life as free people in Cincinnati.  Sethe lives with her daughter Denver while two of her sons have long ago runaway.  Sethe and Denver believe their home is haunted by the spirit of her dead daughter. They rarely leave home and Denver is shy and lonely. Paul D. is a former slave of Sweet Home which is where Sethe and her family were kept before their escape across the Ohio River.  He catches up with Sethe in Cincinnati and convinces her and Denver to enjoy an evening out when they come across “Beloved”--the spirit of her dead child in a woman’s form. Beloved is feral and causes a great deal of strife in Sethe’s life.  The themes of the book cover everything from racism, sexism, class, spirituality, and the mother-daughter family dynamics and it won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1988 and was a runner up for the National Book Award that year. (This caused quite a bit of controversy in the African American literary community!) It is now considered one of Morrison’s best work while concurrently being banned from high school curriculums across the country.  In this episode, we talk about the many differences between the original book & the movie to decide which we like better.  In this ep the Margos discuss: The incredible life of Toni Morrison The more controversial aspects of the book and why it is banned from so many schools  The basic differences between book & movie.  How Oprah Winfrey finally brought the adaptation to life The cast of the movie including Danny Glover (Paul D.,) Kimberly Elise (Denver,) Thandie Newton (Beloved) and Hill Harper as Halle. Redefining Wealth with Patrice Washington
Life After Financial Loss

Redefining Wealth with Patrice Washington

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 6, 2019 25:36

One of the questions someone recently asked me was: What would you do today if you had to rebuild your life after a financial loss? And it got me thinking back to 2009 and my devastating bathroom floor moment. Now, if you’re new to Redefining Wealth, you might not know this story. So, let me quickly give you the gist. First, thank you to Experian for sponsoring this episode. All thoughts and opinions are my own. To learn more about Experian Boost as mentioned in this episode, visit Experian.com/patrice. Straight out of college, I built a 7-figure business. Then at the height of the recession, I went from making a million to scrounging for change in couch cushions, old purses – any and everywhere possible. Fortunately, though I was able to pick my life back up and rebuild everything. And if I had to do it again, I’d use the same tangible things we talk about on today’s podcast. Give Yourself Grace I know for many people who find themselves in financial despair, it can leave them ashamed, embarrassed and downright depressed. I know for me, when I lost everything, we’re talking foreclosure, repossession and creditors calling left and right, I felt guilty and ashamed and I beat myself up about the situation – wondering how could I have let this happen. You see, it’s so easy to fall into that beat-up mindset, BUT I want you to remember (and tweet) this vital point: [spp-tweet tweet="[bctt tweet="“You are not a failure simply because you find yourself in a failed circumstance.” – Patrice Washington" username="seekwisdompcw"] Now, a big part of Redefining Wealth is the Faith Pillar, and one thing that it has taught me is this: [spp-tweet tweet="[bctt tweet="“Nothing in life happened to me; instead, it happened for me.” – Patrice Washington" username="seekwisdompcw"] I want you to remember these two things and show yourself some grace. Yes, take personal responsibility and acknowledge what you could have done differently, but drop the shame and beat-up mindset because they’ll not serve you well at all. Instead, get curious. Think about what you could do differently in the future. What changes would you make? What might you notice sooner? Commit to a Plan One of the first things I remember doing in 2009 when everything was falling apart was to refocus and reflect on my goals at that moment. Not what they were back when I was making 7-figures, but what they were in that moment of financial scarcity. This approach is similar to the concept “So What, Now What” from my book Real Money Answers for Every Woman – meaning, “Okay, so this has happened, what are you going to do NOW?” In creating and committing to a plan, it’s essential to get clear on the “now” piece. What can I do now? What are my goals now? What is the next best step I can take now? What is my “why” now? The other part of this approach is having a why – a reason for working through your situation. The best advice I can give is to take it step-by-step and write everything down. What is your first goal? Is it to downsize and move into a smaller space? Is it to figure out your car situation? Is it to look at your budget? What is the new normal you’re willing to embrace? And what is the plan that goes along with that? In other words, for you to take your next best step, what do you need to do? Who do you need to call? Where do you need to go? What do you need to sacrifice? Add a Boost to Your Credit If you’re like many people, when you’re in a financial struggle, you avoid opening your mail, you stop answering the phone, and you likely avoid checking your credit report. Now, dodging your credit report is one of the worst things you can do. Why? Because credit is weaved into so much of your life  – many opportunities you’ll have (or won’t have) are directly linked to your credit. Hill Harper, brand ambassador of the credit bureau, Experian, says this: [spp-tweet tweet="[bctt tweet="“The most important thing you can do is pay your bills on time and not take on too much debt.” – Hill Harper" username="seekwisdompcw"] Experian Boost is something I wish was around 10 years ago. It works by giving your credit a boost when you pay your household bills such as utility bills, cell phone bill, cable bill and others on time, every time.   Until now, things like the electric, gas, water, cell phone, cable bills haven’t affected your credit score. But now that they can, you’ll have the chance to boost your score instantly with every on-time payment. While results will vary, if you’ve been through a lot and you want to have something that allows you to feel like you’re making progress, take advantage of Experian Boost by visiting Experian.com/patrice and get your quick win! Seek Support Sooner Rather than Later For me, the worst part of my financial trouble was the sense of loneliness. I felt I couldn’t tell anyone because of guilt and shame. I also felt people wouldn’t understand or respect me anymore. I felt alone and waited until my back was up against the wall before getting any help. It wasn’t until I was crying on the bathroom floor that I reached for my Bible and landed on Proverbs 17:16, “What good is money in the hands of a fool if they have no desire to seek wisdom? That was when it occurred to me: I’d been good at chasing money, but I had no idea how to ask for help. Once I opened up to the possibilities that were out there and asked for help, I realized the variety of resources available – and that was 10 years ago. Today, there are thousands of resources available at your fingertips. It’s literally that easy to find support, and I recommend doing it sooner rather than later because another minute spent trying to work through your struggles alone is another minute lost.
