We all know you need money to make money but you also need to "bank" money to use it especially as our world becomes more reliant on technology and touch-free. However, many lower-income, immigrants, and even young people do not have access to traditional financial services like banks. This week's guest, Capway founder Sheena Allen, hopes to change this for the “underbanked” by restoring trust in and a fair banking system with her latest app. Allen, a serial entrepreneur at heart, grew up in a small town with one bank. As a result, the people in her community, including family and friends, would keep their money in their home or use other fee-heavy alternative banking options. She created her very first app with little tech experience and has since developed into an app machine, with five apps under her belt to date. In 2016, Allen had the idea to create the app and digital bank, Capway, which gave Sheena the title as the youngest female in America to own and operate a digital bank. The fintech company connects underserved millennials and Gen Z to today's cashless economy. Join us as we chat with Sheena about the challenges of banking while Black as well as what it takes to launch an app in this digital world. Entrepreneurs and investors - you won't want to miss this!
This week’s guest, Sheena Allen, is the youngest Black woman CEO and founder of a bank. Sheena created CapWay, a digital banking app and financial service provider, with the goal of closing the income, race, and financial literacy gap through access to banking and opportunities. In college, Sheena created her first app without knowing how to code and has been a force in the app and fin tech space ever since. Her latest venture is a digital bank, CapWay. Tune in to this week’s episode to hear more about Sheena’s process to creating her very own digital banking app and her entrepreneurship journey. In this episode you’ll learn: How Sheena created and funded her digital banking app CapWay Why she created it What the process of creating a FinTech company looks like What pre-seed, seed, and Series A mean How long it takes to build an app How much it costs to build an app and more... Today we have the second part of the two part series with three companies from Class 7 of QC Fintech. Sheena Allen from Capway, James Safran from Qbrics, and Christian Zimmerman and Nate Washington from Qoins joined us to discuss their startups and life inside of Class 7. If you want to see the companies after they have wrapped up you can come to the Southeast Fintech Venture Conference on November 20th (an all day event at Barings new headquarters in Charlotte) or just come out to listen to Class 7 at their Demo Day. Check out our recent podcast with Dan Roselli and Sarah Smith to learn more about the upcoming Venture Conference. In today’s interview, I wanted to focus on the companies a little more and their experiences. As such, we dig into the following questions: What’s been their biggest failure (or challenge) to date? How do reach out to the partner companies? In essence, they all have to work with large financial companies in some way. How do they reach out and start the conversations to gain ‘traction’. Have they hard startup experience in the past and if so what did they learn from those previous experiences that is helping them today? What is the camaraderie like in the class? Is there fighting within the program or do they support and help each other? What is success for each company? Are they raising money? Stick around for next week as we have our first part of a two part series with Thom Ruhe – the President and CEO of NC IDEA. Thom has ton of experience in the startup world and developing/nurturing the ecosystems supporting them. As such we dive into the role of NC IDEA, what programs they run, more about Tom’s history and what brought him here. We also dig into the thorny questions about what’s missing in Charlotte from a startup perspective, why Charlotte feels slighted from NC IDEA, should we want HQ2 and much, much more. Check back next week for another episode of the Charlotte Angel Connection.
Today we have the first part of a two part series with three companies from Class 7 of QC Fintech. Sheena Allen from Capway, James Safran from Qbrics, and Christian Zimmerman and Nate Washington from Qoins joined us to discuss their startups and life inside of Class 7. This was recorded in late September and I had a chance to talk with two of them again in early November. These companies are developing at a rapid pace. I'm really impressed with both the quality of the founders who are coming into Charlotte AND their development under the mentors, advisors, and staff at QC Fintech. If you want to see the companies after they have wrapped up you can come to the Southeast Fintech Venture Conference (an all day event at Barings new headquarters in Charlotte) or just come out to listen to Class 7 at their Demo Day. Check out last week's podcast with Dan Roselli and Sarah Smith to learn more about the upcoming Venture Conference. In today's episode we explored the following questions and more. Who they are and what they do? What brought these companies to Charlotte and what do they expect to get out of the program? What’s the benefit of having a co-founder? What’s been the experience with QC Fintech? What does the program have you doing? What do negative comments about Bitcoin (i.e., Jamie Dimon) have on businesses working on the blockchain? The under-banked have been under-served for a long time? What are the challenges ahead for Capway? What challenges are ahead for Qoins as they ramp up and deliver a great tool to help their users pay off their debt? Part of the challenge of being a startup is the education component? How are these companies educating their potential customers/users? What are they getting out of the program? Who is the best ping-pong player in the class (hint: it sounds like Christian was de-throned but thinks he can earn it back). In the next session, we dig deeper into the companies and their development. Hang around next week to learn more and get excited for Charlotte's first Venture Conference and Class 7's Demo Day. Support our entrepreneurial ecosystem. If nothing else, come find out what's happening in right here in our city. I promise you will not be disappointed.
Sheena Allen is not your typical tech success story. Her background wasn't in programming or coding but she was able to build an app company from sketches in her notebook. And she did it from rural Mississippi not silicon valley or new york city. Now, she's looking forward and executing on a new company, Capway. It's bigger than a tech company - it's mission is to bridge the gap for financial literacy to lower income populations here in the US. Sheena talks about life after raising the first time and how she used her previous wins as leverage. Listen in! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Today in the guest chair we have a woman I consider the queen of apps. Her name is Sheena Allen and she is a tech entrepreneur. She started her first company in 2011 as a senior at the University of South Mississippi. At the time, she had no tech background and was a psychology and film major and on a whim decided to launch a mobile application company. Giving herself a year to see if she would see any success with her company, Sheena Allen Applications, she eventually found that success with app #3, Dubblen. In fact, three months after launching the app for Android, Dubblen received over 500,000 downloads. That year, 2013, Sheena made the decision to leave Mississippi and move to a tech-hub to find mentor and increase her knowledge in the tech space. Since then, she has gone on to experience frustration with raising money and the predatory lending practices in Silicon Valley, Sheena decided to fight back through the launch of a second startup, CapWay. CapWay is financial company that focuses on the unbanked and underbanked. The service offers financial literacy content and onboards unbanked users to get a bank account. She has been featured in various publications, including Forbes.com, BlackEnterprise.com, and EBONY Magazine. In late 2016, Sheena made her premiere in She Started It, a documentary film that follows five women around on their startup journey. On this episode, Sheena shares: The steps she took to create an app as a non-technical creator How and why her third app became so successful The challenges of raising money in Silicon Valley as a black women entrepreneur and some tips to overcome it Her secret to building a strong and loyal team How she is setting her business and brand up for success Listen on iTunes, Soundcloud, Stitcher and Google Play Links mentioned on this episode: Sheena Allen Apps Dubblen CapWay HouseBoxx Sheena Allen eBook: Starting Guide to Your First App Click here to subscribe via RSS feed (non-iTunes feed): http://sidehustlepro.libsyn.com/rss Announcements Important Announcements: If you’re interested in growing your business and brand using the powers of Instagram, register for MASTER THE GRAM.
