Impact Hustlers - Entrepreneurs With Social Impact

Imagine a debt-free world where you've fully paid off your student loans, auto loans, credit card debt, and mortgage. That's how Christian Zimmerman, one of the co-founders of Qoins, envisions the world will be with the help of their app. Qoins is a debt-free financial app that helps people achieve financial freedom by starting a habit of saving money. The beauty of this app is that everything is fully automated too. Now, who wouldn't want to use this? Christian shares his own experience with student loans and how creating Qoins wasn't initially part of his plan. He simply wanted a solution to his personal problem. After reaching a low point in his life dealing with a health condition, Christian soldiered on. One thing led to another and serendipitously, Qoins was born. He talks about the validation they received that became their impetus to building Qoins, the process of raising funds and finding investors, what sets them apart from other financial apps, as well as how him being Latino and his co-founder Nate being black somehow played a role in all this. Christian also walks us through the Qoins journey and how exactly their product works both for setting money aside and paying off debt. Financial debt is something that plagues pretty much all adults, so what Qoins does truly creates an impact, because just like maintaining physical health, our financial wealth and financial health are important aspects of our lives too. Christian's key lessons and quotes from this episode were:“I never really told myself I couldn't do something. And so, I think that was one of the biggest things that I took when I started my own company was that, I have to have that type of mentality, otherwise, it's not going to work.” (15:36)“The win is when we're able to say that we've successfully exited. We're able to create impact and again that goal, hitting that 100 million dollars in total debt paid off or a billion dollars, whatever we can to make sure that we did create a positive impact in our customers' lives.” (23:58)“By automating this habit, we build education. By educating the customer, we then create impact, and then it's a full circle.” (34:29)“Personal finance has three big pillars: automation, education, and recommendation.” (34:42)“We're in the business of putting ourselves out of business… if we've done a good job of helping everyone become debt-free, then we've probably put ourselves out of business.” (36:09)In this episode, we also talked about:Christian's personal problem with debt and the debt issue as a whole (2:00)Bootstrapping Qoins and how they raised funding (9:47)Dealing with health issues and the entrepreneurial mindset (14:31)Christian and his co-founder Nate's experience as minority startup founders (21:59)Challenges they faced and how they overcame it (26:48)The Qoins experience (29:23)How Christian sees the world in 10 years if Qoins succeeds (36:09)Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/impacthustlers)

How debt payoff apps can help youSubscribe: https://thingsyoushouldknow.supercast.techFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/879254746173653Debt payoff apps help you reduce and eventually eliminate your debt. The way this works depends on the app. Here are the most common features of apps to help you pay off debt:Payment planning: Gives you a step-by-step plan for paying off debt based on how much you owe, the interest rate, and your monthly payment amount. These apps often include different payoff options and compare their results. For example, the Debt Payoff Planner app lets you compare different strategies, including the debt snowball and debt avalanche methods.Automated debt payoff: Some of the most popular apps to help get out of debt automate the process as much as possible. Qoins rounds up debit card transactions and then sends that cash as an extra debt payment at the end of the month. Additionally, Digit analyzes your bank accounts and makes withdrawals that you can afford to assign to the financial goals you've set.Tracking and reducing spending: Debt payoff apps that connect to your financial accounts can record your expenses and make recommendations on how to budget. If you follow these tips, it will free up more money for paying off debt. Also, these apps can help you decide which debts to pay off first, like credit card debt and other high-interest debt.Learning about your options and making goals to pay off debt and learning can reap big benefits. By paying down your debt more quickly, you could save money on interest. You could also find ways to consolidate your debt.Debt consolidation is when you get either a personal loan or a balance transfer credit card to pay off your debt. Then, you just need to worry about the single monthly loan or credit card payment, instead of multiple. You may get a lower interest rate, too.Another benefit of paying off debt is that it can increase your credit score. Debt can hurt your credit, especially credit card debt. As you pay it off, your credit score should go up. Some debt payoff apps, such as Mint, even allow you to track your credit score. How to pick the best debt payoff app for youTo pick the best app for debt, think about what you need help with the most. After you answer that, you'll know which type of app to look for. Here are the most common examples:Are you looking for the fastest or cheapest way to pay off debt? A debt payoff app that lets you compare different payoff methods, such as Debt Payoff Planner, is exactly what you need.Do you have trouble paying more than the minimum each month? You should go with a debt payoff app that automatically saves money for you, such as Qoins or Digit. These apps do the work for you -- all you need to do is set them up.Would you like to take a hands-on approach with your debt and be as involved as possible? Payment planning would still work well as a guide. Still, you decide how much to put toward your debt each month. Are you interested in an app to manage all your accounts and cut your spending? Try an all-purpose money management app, such as Mint. These apps typically let you set financial goals, like decreasing debt, and then make suggestions to help you reach them. In today’s interview, I wanted to focus on the companies a little more and their experiences.  As such, we dig into the following questions: What’s been their biggest failure (or challenge) to date? How do reach out to the partner companies? In essence, they all have to work with large financial companies in some way.  How do they reach out and start the conversations to gain ‘traction’. Have they hard startup experience in the past and if so what did they learn from those previous experiences that is helping them today? What is the camaraderie like in the class? Is there fighting within the program or do they support and help each other? What is success for each company? Are they raising money? Stick around for next week as we have our first part of a two part series with Thom Ruhe – the President and CEO of NC IDEA. Thom has ton of experience in the startup world and developing/nurturing the ecosystems supporting them.  As such we dive into the role of NC IDEA, what programs they run, more about Tom’s history and what brought him here. We also dig into the thorny questions about what’s missing in Charlotte from a startup perspective, why Charlotte feels slighted from NC IDEA, should we want HQ2 and much, much more.  Check back next week for another episode of the Charlotte Angel Connection.

What do negative comments about Bitcoin (i.e., Jamie Dimon) have on businesses working on the blockchain? The under-banked have been under-served for a long time?  What are the challenges ahead for Capway? What challenges are ahead for Qoins as they ramp up and deliver a great tool to help their users pay off their debt? Part of the challenge of being a startup is the education component?  How are these companies educating their potential customers/users? What are they getting out of the program? Who is the best ping-pong player in the class (hint: it sounds like Christian was de-throned but thinks he can earn it back). In today’s podcast we talk to Christian Zimmerman, Founder of Qoins. Qoins is a new way to conquer your debt. Use the spare change from each checking account transaction to automatically pay off your debt. Christian, only 23 years old, has worked in the startup world for the last 2 years. Today he shares his journey to leverage his experience to launch an app of his own. Not featured in the interview, but another important member of the Qoins team is Co-Founder Nate Washington. Nate is 25 years old and an award-winning programmer. I had the pleasure of connecting with this dynamic duo at Atlanta Tech Village’s Startup Village where they did an amazing job of pitching and demoing the platform. Mission: The average household carries nearly $50k in student loan debt alone. With statistics like that, you can imagine that today’s college grads have to be more focused than ever on managing and paying down debt. Christian is no different, except that he saw an opportunity to make it easier to tackle this big problem. Mindset: Christian has always been pretty tenacious. At the age of 23, Qoins isn’t even his first business venture. Blend that fire with his experience and network in the startup world and it’s easy to see why he’s all in on making Qoins a success.   Marketing: This part is a must listen. From leveraging press (Qoins was recently featured on a segment of the Clark Howard Show) to social media advertising, Christian and I basically have an on-air strategy session for various ways to generate quality leads online. Check it out towards the end of the interview. Masterminds: Community is everything. From Atlanta Tech Village to Switchyards, Christian shares the local startup communities that have helped Qoins gain so much momentum so quickly.
