Creating isn't just about what you make…it's about who you become. We're back with the brilliant Nana Brew-Hammond for her second visit to Reframe to Create, and this time, it's a full-circle moment. About my guest: Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond is an American-Ghanaian writer of novels, short stories and a poet. Two-time Emmy and three-time NAACP Image Award-winning television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Kathleen Bertrand. Kathleen Bertrand began talking in 2009 about a new film festival to attract people of color to Atlanta's growing film industry. From a discussion with her then CEO William Pate at the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau, to talks with film enthusiasts and potential film partners, Bertrand began to assemble the team and resources needed to launch what was to become BronzeLens Film Festival, a non-profit organization. While everybody knew about Tyler Perry's Atlanta-based empire, Bertrand and her colleagues created a platform for broader engagement in the industry for people of color and did so in a way that showcased Atlanta and its history and culture. Under Bertrand's visionary leadership as executive producer, BronzeLens has grown to receive attention and accolades from across the country and around the world. It is a charter member of ARRAY (formerly AFFRM), the film distribution network founded by producer/director Ava DuVernay in 2011. BronzeLens has been mentioned in articles about film diversity in publications such as the New York Times, the LA Times, Atlanta Magazine, Oz Magazine, and Ebony Magazine. In late 2016, the festival was named as an Academy Award Qualifying Film Festival for the Short Film Award. This tremendous honor is one of only 3 such designations in the country for film festivals that support the work of people of color. In its most recent film season, the festival received film submissions from 59 countries around the world. BronzeLens has received two “Best of Atlanta” Awards from Atlanta Magazine: “Best Showcase for New Filmmakers,” and “Best Place to Break into the Film Industry.” Kathleen has received numerous awards for her work with BronzeLens. In 2016, she was given the Georgia Highlight Award, as part of the annual Georgia Film Gala. In 2018, she received the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from her alma mater Spelman College, which honored her careers in both hospitality and the film industry. Two-time Emmy and three-time NAACP Image Award-winning television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Kathleen Bertrand. Kathleen Bertrand began talking in 2009 about a new film festival to attract people of color to Atlanta's growing film industry. From a discussion with her then CEO William Pate at the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau, to talks with film enthusiasts and potential film partners, Bertrand began to assemble the team and resources needed to launch what was to become BronzeLens Film Festival, a non-profit organization. While everybody knew about Tyler Perry's Atlanta-based empire, Bertrand and her colleagues created a platform for broader engagement in the industry for people of color and did so in a way that showcased Atlanta and its history and culture. Under Bertrand's visionary leadership as executive producer, BronzeLens has grown to receive attention and accolades from across the country and around the world. It is a charter member of ARRAY (formerly AFFRM), the film distribution network founded by producer/director Ava DuVernay in 2011. BronzeLens has been mentioned in articles about film diversity in publications such as the New York Times, the LA Times, Atlanta Magazine, Oz Magazine, and Ebony Magazine. In late 2016, the festival was named as an Academy Award Qualifying Film Festival for the Short Film Award. This tremendous honor is one of only 3 such designations in the country for film festivals that support the work of people of color. In its most recent film season, the festival received film submissions from 59 countries around the world. BronzeLens has received two “Best of Atlanta” Awards from Atlanta Magazine: “Best Showcase for New Filmmakers,” and “Best Place to Break into the Film Industry.” Kathleen has received numerous awards for her work with BronzeLens. In 2016, she was given the Georgia Highlight Award, as part of the annual Georgia Film Gala. In 2018, she received the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from her alma mater Spelman College, which honored her careers in both hospitality and the film industry. Additionally, in 2018, she was inducted into the Atlanta Hospitality Hall of Fame, which also honored her dual careers in film and in hospitality. In 2019, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms presented Bertrand with the City of Atlanta's highest honor – The Phoenix Award. Tariq Nasheed is known online for his controversial commentary on race. He is a proponent of "Foundational Black Americans" (FBA), an ideology and movement he founded, which is defined as, "any person classified as Black, who can trace their bloodline lineage back to the American system of slavery. To be designated as an FBA, at least one parent must come from a non-immigrant background in The United States of America." Nasheed believes FBAs must "seek out reparations for their own" and that American-born descendants of the American Slave Trade have not adequately sought out resources for themselves. Nasheed is known for his use of the term "bed wench" and the related term "Negro bed wench mentality". He uses the term to refer to black women who date interracially. He revived and popularized use of this term, which historically was used to disparage black women who were raped by their masters during slavery. Ebony Magazine described Nasheed's conception of the term "bed wench" as a put-down of successful black women who challenge the institutions of black patriarchy. Nasheed also uses the term "buck breaking" to refer to the sexual abuse of Black men, particularly in the context of slavery, via a documentary of the same name, which MEL Magazine described as containing "uncooked nonsense" and being largely inaccurate.[2 Learn more about your ad choices. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, the 97-year-old Pittsburgh-based artist and sculptor Thaddeus Mosley has a deep and enduring obsession with wood. In his late 20s, he began to use the material for art, carving sculptures in his basement studio, and with his sculpture-making now spanning 70 years, his enduring dedication to his craft is practically unparalleled. Represented by Karma gallery since 2019, Mosley has only now, in the past decade or so, begun to receive the international recognition and attention he has long deserved. In his hands, wood sings; he shapes and carves trees into striking abstract forms that often appear as if they're levitating while honoring and preserving their organic, natural character. Judge Lynn received her bachelor's degree in English and American Literature from Harvard University and her Doctorate in Law from The University of Pennsylvania Law School. At 33, she was elected judge of The Cleveland Heights Municipal Court and served there for more than eight years. Judge Lynn is still actively engaged in both local and national initiatives to prevent domestic violence through her work as a board member of Bloom365. She also supports The Whole Brother Mission, an organization designed to address the emotional and familial wellbeing of Black men. Judge Lynn began her television career in 2001 when she became the host of the nationally syndicated television show, Power of Attorney. During that time, she also served as a retired judge sitting by assignment in multiple jurisdictions throughout the state of Ohio. In 2006, Judge Lynn became the host of Divorce Court. In 2007, she expanded her television presence by becoming the host of the prime-time television show, Decision House. In 2008 and 2009, Judge Lynn was a bi-monthly contributor on News and Notes, a weekly news show on National Public Radio (NPR). In 2009, she became the host and a co-executive producer of Wedlock or Deadlock, a syndicated series based on a segment of Divorce Court. Judge Lynn became a regular co-host alongside Dr. Ish Major on We tv's highly rated Marriage Bootcamp series in 2020. She continued her work with We tv in the series Commit or Quit with Judge Lynn Toler in 2022. Most recently Judge Lynn became the creator, writer, and executive producer for ALLBLK, a streaming service for Black television and film from AMC Networks, series Judge Me Not, loosely based on her life. Judge Lynn has appeared as a legal and relationship expert on a variety of shows including Larry King Live, Dr. Drew, CNN, The Dr. Phil Show, The Steve Harvey Show, CBS Morning Show, The Wendy Williams Show, The Breakfast Club, and many others. Judge Lynn is the author of several books. Before Freda DeKnight began writing for Ebony Magazine in 1946, American publications that centered on Black cuisine were overwhelmingly written by white writers for white audiences, often using harmful caricatures and dangerous stereotypes. Cheeraz Gormon is a writer, storyteller, and public speaker who creates poetry, essays, photography, film, music, and advertising.As a poet, Cheeraz has opened for Dr. Cornel West, Dr. Dennis Kimbro, and MacArthur Fellow Dr. Deborah Willis and toured with HBO for The Unchained Memories Tour. She is a two-time TEDxGatewayArch presenter, and her poetry has been featured in Ebony Magazine, Huffington Post, the American Ethnologist, and featured on albums with the Midwest Avengers and world-renowned DJ and producer Osunlade. Her first poetry collection, "In The Midst of Loving," was released in 2015. In 2018, Cheeraz starred in The Black Repertory Theaters' gala production of The Gospel at Colonus as the Evangelist Antigone. She returned to the stage in May of 2022 for the revival of "Rivers of Women" by the late poet Shirley Bradley LeFlore. In June 2022, she joined the Ashleylaine Dance Company for "Unseen," their season-closing performance.In 2016, Cheeraz was selected as an apexart International Arts Fellow; in 2018, she was named St. Louis Visionary Award, Outstanding Working Artist, and in 2019, she was awarded the prestigious St. Louis Regional Arts Commission Artist Fellow in literary arts.In tandem with her work as an artist, Cheeraz is a community health worker and works with local organizations to provide spiritual and social care to people impacted by violent crime. Following the tragic loss of her brother, John Gormon, Jr., Cheeraz founded Sibling Support Network, an organization dedicated to assisting people who have lost siblings to violent crime. For this work, she was featured in TIME Magazine's 2018 "Guns in America" issue.Most recently, she was a part of the ensemble cast of the sold-out stage performances of The Color Purple with the Hawthorne Players and performed before a packed audience at the Saint Louis Art Museum as part of The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century exhibition inside of multimedia artist Gary Simmons, Garage Lab installation. As a self-professed ad geek, she still finds time to consult and freelance as a creative director, mentorship advocate, and advisor in the advertising industry.
