Today, it's the site of a historical restoration project that has been decades in the making. Before Europeans arrived, animals would have known the location of this spring in today's Greenbrier County, West Virginia, and this probably led Native Americans to the site as well. William Patterson was likely the first white settler to discover the spring, when he was chased into a thornbush by a protective mother bison drinking with her calf in the late 1700s. Over the following 150 years, the property would change hands many times. The Blue Sulphur Springs Resort, built in the 1830s, quickly became a vacation destination. Today, only the pavilion remains. The Greek Revival–style, columned structure was built around the spring itself, which flows up through a well in the floor. Once grand, by the time it was donated to the Greenbrier Historical Society by Mrs. Rebecca Fleshman Lineberry in 2013, the pavilion was falling apart. With the help of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, private sources, and a Kickstarter campaign, the restoration began. The Blue is now open to the public and available for events like family reunions, weddings, and photography shoots. Twelve therapy dogs across the state are impacting over 5,000 students as they start the new school year. These dogs are part of the “Friends With Paws” program, which brings certified therapy dogs into schools to help students' learning. “You would think these dogs are primarily for elementary schools or middle schools, but the high school students, they have their way with every age group,” West Virginia First Lady Cathy Justice said. Justice started the “Friends with Paws” program in 2022. She said the comfort of her own dog made her see the need for therapy dogs in schools. “Babydog surely is the inspiration for this,” she said. Amid a landscape pulled from the pages of a Mark Twain novel, the islands, shorelines, and underwater habitat that are protected as part of the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge offer intrepid visitors a chance to explore little-known landscapes. To help increase knowledge about the islands, officials at the refuge are sponsoring a kayaking challenge, inviting paddlers to visit as many islands as possible and share a selfie taken at each with the visitor center staff in exchange for prizes. Michael Schramm, the manager of visitor services at the refuge's visitor center at Williamstown, near Parkersburg, says that only two people have managed to visit all of the refuge islands so far, though many have already embarked. “It's a very different view of the river than one gets from standing on the shore,” Schramm said. Welcome to The Drive with Paul Swann! On today's show, we have some exciting news about an upcoming football game between Marshall and Ohio State. The two schools have agreed to play at Ohio Stadium in Columbus on September 21, 2024. This will be the third meeting between the schools, and Marshall will receive a guarantee of $1.6 million for the game. Plus, Marshall fans will have the opportunity to travel to the game easily, and ticket priority will be given to active Big Green and season-ticket holders. We also discuss the recent controversy surrounding West Virginia University's head men's basketball coach, Bob Huggins. Huggins used derogatory language during a radio show interview, which deeply hurt many people and caused embarrassment for the athletics family and members of the campus community. The university has outlined a series of actions and measures that will be taken to educate the athletics department and future coaching staff about inequality, reduce mental health crises, support marginalized communities, and make donations to organizations that serve these groups. Huggins will also face consequences, including suspension for the first three regular season games of 2023-2024, a reduced annual compensation of $1 million, and an amended year-by-year employment contract, which will end on April 30, 2024. Huggins has issued an apology and takes full responsibility for his actions, regretting the hurt he caused and is committed to learning and doing better.
