Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Monday, March 10, 2025. A major offroading trail expansion is expected to boost outdoor recreation and tourism in Eastern Kanawha County…the quirky draw of George Washington's Bath Tub attracts travelers to Berkeley Springs…and the Parkersburg CVB's new welcome center brings an increase in visitors …on today's daily304. #1 – From WV NEWS – A major outdoor recreation project in Eastern Kanawha County is poised to transform the area into a premier destination for off-road enthusiasts.  The Appalachian Outlaw Trails is adding more than 2,000 acres of trails designed for ATVs, dirt bikes, side-by-sides, and full-size vehicles like Jeeps and trucks. This expansion aims to attract tourists and outdoor adventurers from West Virginia and the entire East Coast. Currently featuring 25 miles of trails in the Upper Kanawha Valley, AOT has ambitious plans to double this mileage. The goal is to develop one of the most extensive off-roading parks in the nation, covering over 100,000 acres in the long term. The ultimate plan is to develop a comprehensive outdoor recreation resort complete with cabins, a concert venue, mountain biking trails, hiking paths, horseback riding areas, and clay shooting venues.  The Kanawha County Commission is collaborating with AOT on this multi-phase project, with the initial focus on developing trails in the Quincy area. But of all the George Washington showcases, this reporter's favorite is a national park in the small town of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. That's where America's first president was said to bathe in an open-air brick tub that reads, not surprisingly, “George Washington's Bath Tub.” It was filled with warm natural mineral spring water emanating from the surrounding mountainous countryside. What makes traveling to Berkeley Springs most enticing is that we can join, at least figuratively, Washington in sitting in a large indoor bathtub that can easily accommodate two bathers and is filled with 104-degree mineral water. It's situated in what's called the Old Roman Bath House at Berkeley Springs State Park. Read more: https://www.highbrowmagazine.com/25207-visit-george-washington-s-bath-tub-berkeley-springs   #3 – From NEWS & SENTINEL – The Greater Parkersburg Convention and Visitors Bureau continues to see more people at its Welcome Center in Parkersburg to inform people about what attractions and accommodations are available in the area. The Welcome Center, which opened in April 2022 after relocating to 113 Ann St., has continually seen more people each year, CVB President and CEO Mark Lewis said. The bureau and Lewis won the Excellence in Tourism Development award at the 2025 Hospitality University conference held Jan. 26-28 at the Greenbrier. The increase in tourism has enabled them to double the attendance at the Oil and Gas Museum and at Henderson Hall, while the main draw continues to be Blennerhasset Island Historical State Park. The IT Center is expected to open for classes in the fall.  A second phase, occurring simultaneously, will be setting up the new daycare facility in the former OVU Library space. This episode takes us through the chilling legends and ghostly encounters of West Virginia. Known for its rugged mountains, Civil War history, and haunted tales, the Mountain State has long captivated paranormal enthusiasts. From eerie penitentiaries and haunted hospitals to a ghostly amusement park, Host Lyle Perez delves into ten of West Virginia's spookiest sites. Featured Locations: Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, Weston 71 Asylum Dr, Weston, WV 26452 The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is a massive Gothic structure that opened in 1864 to treat mentally ill patients but soon became infamous for overcrowding and brutal conditions. Today, this asylum is renowned for its ghostly activity, particularly the spirit of Lily, a young girl who haunts the Civil War wing. Visitors often report feeling an overwhelming sadness and hear whispers and giggles from empty rooms. Paranormal investigators regularly capture EVPs in the building's dark corridors, and overnight tours allow guests to explore the haunted recovery rooms, operating theaters, and more. Lake Shawnee Amusement Park, Rock 470 Matoaka Rd, Rock, WV 24747 This abandoned amusement park, built on a site marked by tragedy and loss, is said to be haunted by the spirits of children who met untimely deaths. A girl in a pink dress is frequently seen near the old swings, while other visitors report hearing eerie laughter and screams. The land itself is believed to be cursed, as it was originally a Native American burial ground. Now, Lake Shawnee offers guided tours and paranormal events, attracting those brave enough to experience its chilling atmosphere. West Virginia Penitentiary, Moundsville 818 Jefferson Ave, Moundsville, WV 26041 The West Virginia Penitentiary is a looming Gothic structure with a dark history of riots, violence, and over 100 executions. One of the most well-known apparitions is the Shadow Man, often spotted near the North Wagon Gate. Visitors report feeling an oppressive energy, particularly in the “Sugar Shack” recreation area and solitary confinement cells known as “The Hole.” With ghost tours and paranormal investigations available, visitors can explore the prison's haunted past firsthand. The Blennerhassett Hotel, Parkersburg 320 Market St, Parkersburg, WV 26101 Built in 1889, the Blennerhassett Hotel is rumored to be haunted by its original owner, William Chancellor, along with ghostly children who are often seen playing in the hallways. Guests report hearing phantom music and seeing the apparition of a man in a tuxedo in the ballroom mirrors. The Blennerhassett offers ghost tours that reveal the stories behind these hauntings, giving visitors a glimpse into its haunted legacy. Harpers Ferry, Jefferson County 171 Shoreline Dr, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425 This historic Civil War town is known for ghostly apparitions of soldiers and the infamous Screaming Jenny, a spirit seen running in flames toward the train tracks. Visitors also report encounters with the ghost of John Brown, who was captured here after his raid. Harpers Ferry hosts regular ghost tours, exploring haunted sites like St. Peter's Church and other notable landmarks in this history-rich area. Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park, Hillsboro 683 Droop Park Rd, Hillsboro, WV 24946 Droop Mountain, site of a brutal Civil War battle, is haunted by the souls of Confederate soldiers who perished there. The eerie sounds of marching, gunfire, and phantom cries have been reported by visitors, especially near the observation tower. This historic site is open to the public and offers trails where visitors might encounter ghostly Confederate soldiers roaming the foggy hills. Haymond House, Sutton Corner of North Hill Rd and Haymond Ave, Sutton, WV 26601 Known for its ghostly female residents, the Haymond House is haunted by a woman in white and a protective spirit known as the Gray Lady. Visitors frequently experience cold spots and report seeing shadowy figures, particularly near a large antique mirror rumored to act as a portal to the spirit world. This historic house occasionally hosts ghost tours for those curious to experience its eerie presence. Silver Run Tunnel (North Bend Rail Trail), Cairo Cairo, WV 26337 The Silver Run Tunnel on the North Bend Rail Trail is said to be haunted by the Lady in White, a bride who died tragically on her wedding day. Ghost hunters report hearing her mournful cries and seeing her ghostly figure vanish into the darkness. Visitors often sense a sudden drop in temperature and an overwhelming sadness when passing through the tunnel. Sweet Springs Sanitarium, Gap Mills 195 Sweet Springs Valley Rd, Gap Mills, WV 24941 Originally a resort, this sanitarium became a tuberculosis hospital in the early 20th century. Today, its haunted reputation draws paranormal enthusiasts who report hearing coughing and moaning, reminders of the patients who spent their last days here. The sanitarium occasionally opens for ghost tours, allowing guests to experience its haunted past. In this episode of The MHP Broker's  Tips and Tricks Closing Cocktails podcast, Maxwell Baker, president of The Mobile Home Park Broker, interviewed The MHP Broker's Paul Schaaf regarding his recent sale of a storage facility, mobile home park and RV community in Parkersburg, West Virginia. As with every Tips and Tricks podcast episode, this one is brought to you by The MHP Broker's proprietary Community Price Maximizer. Use this four-step system to get the highest price possible for your mobile home park or RV community when you sell it through The MHP Broker. Guaranteed. Call Max for details. Here Are the Show Highlights: Max introduced broker Paul Schaaf to discuss his sale of Gihon Self Storage Facility and RV Park in Parkersburg, West Virginia. (00:22) The owner had acquired the park as part of a bankruptcy settlement, so his heart wasn't really in it. He was running it from out of state. It had three verticals: a mobile home park, RV community and self-storage facility. He had a good on-site manager taking care of the day-to-daay, but contacted Paul because he was getting unsolicited offers. The self-storage vertical was running pretty well, with 150 units and about 75 percent occupancy. The mobile home vertical was a mess, though. A lot of houses in poor shape that had to be taken out.  The offers were generally just for the self-storage business, but the owner wanted to sell everything as a single unit. They put together a nice marketing package and had multiple offers. The seller had a nice financing program, which helped attract qualified buyers. (Paul, 1:12) The owners offered self financing on a portion of the loan at about five percent with a three-year balloon payment. (Paul, 3:15) The deal went well, even though the buyer was taking on the mobile home vertical that needed a lot of work. The deal closed in about 45 days. (Paul, 3:49) The buyer was someone Paul had worked with in the past. They had money from family and friends, and had invested in commercial properties before. They were just getting into buying mobile home parks, and had a few properties. Having worked with him before, Paul trusted that they could close without major issues, and that's what happened. (Paul, 4:05) Paul's takeaway was that sellers must be patient, especially if they have properties that are challenging to sell. This one, for instance, had problem houses that had to be removed and replaced. But when you have good buyers and sellers, as he did here, the deal can go quickly and smoothly and be a pleasure to work. (Paul, 4:49) Bring us your most challenging deals. At The Mobile Home Broker, we have years of experience selling mobile home parks, RV communities and all of the other verticals that might be part of the transaction. Call Paul Schaaf or Max Baker at The MHP Broker, (678) 932-0200. Op drop ‘em a line at info@themhpbroker.com. Power Quotes in This Episode: “We are good at those deals in the secondary, tertiary markets. Don't get me wrong. We do big deals. I mean, we just closed a nice $9 million deal recently, and have done upwards toward the multi-million dollar deals as well, up in the 30s. So, we do a lot of deals. We do all types.” (Max, 5:23)

Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Friday, Oct. 18, 2024. The former Parkersburg CVB building has been repurposed to support arts in the community…coworking spaces provide resources and meeting space for remote workers…and a proposed hiking trail in Mercer County was once used by Civil War troops…on today's daily304. #1 – From NEWS & SENTINEL – Artsbridge has purchased the former Convention and Visitors Bureau building to be its new headquarters. “A new location still in downtown Parkersburg means Artsbridge continues its long partnership with other arts, entertainment and service organizations in the Mid-Ohio Valley,”  said Karen Waller, Artsbridge board member. The new facility, located at 350 Seventh St., represents an investment not only in the organization but in the very fabric of the community. With this building, Artsbridge will have the capacity to enhance its programs, host more events and create a welcoming space for collaboration and support. Meanwhile, the Greater Parkersburg Convention & Visitors Bureau has relocated its welcome center to 113 Ann Street. Read more: https://www.newsandsentinel.com/news/business/2024/10/artsbridge-buys-former-cvb-building-to-serve-as-new-headquarters/   #2 – From FIRST ASCENT – Before the rise of remote and hybrid work, young professionals were restricted to confining cubicles and old-school office environments. Even so, some remote workers yearn to be in a structured, professional environment away from productivity-draining distractions at home. Enter local coworking spaces—shared office spaces where remote workers from different companies and industries can work alongside one another as if they are in the office for the day. These spaces, with their modern, open floor plans, typically offer amenities that professionals crave, such as secure Wi-Fi, printing stations, and private rooms for meetings. Base Camp, First Ascent and Ascend WV's coworking space in Morgantown, for example, even offers standing desks for members to stretch their legs, and a kitchenette to prepare snacks and lunch.  Are you a West Virginia grad who has a remote or hybrid position? First Ascent, the program specifically designed to help young professionals launch their careers in the mountains of West Virginia, offers coworking benefits through free access to its six Base Camp locations across the state.  Learn more: https://firstascentwv.com/blog/2024/10/09/are-coworking-spaces-the-new-workplace-norm   #3 – From BLUEFIELD DAILY TELEGRAPH –  A proposed hiking trail in Mercer County would give visitors and residents alike not only opportunities to enjoy the area's scenic beauty, but also experience its history by taking a route Civil War troops used over a century ago as they marched into battle. This hiking/bicycle trail would stretch from the vicinity of Camp Creek State Park to the Bluestone River on the former Bluestone Land & Lumber Company logging railroad along Camp Creek.  A grant of over $360,000 from the West Virginia Division of Highways Recreational Trails Project with a 20% county match is funding the project, according to Mercer County Commission President Bill Archer.  Civil War scholars say the trail is likely part of the path taken by officers and troops of the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry to the Battle of Princeton in May 1862, he added. Welcome to the Main Thing Podcast, where every episode brings you a concise, high-impact wisdom lesson from one of the wisest people I know. Studying their wisdom and learning together, we all get just a little bit better at this thing called life.   Fostering Democracy and Personal Growth Through Collaborative Exploration What if embracing diverse ideas could transform not just your personal growth, but also strengthen democracy itself? Tune into an enlightening conversation with Dr. Shannon Wheatley Hartman, president of the Interactivity Foundation. She reveals how an exploratory mindset opens doors to innovative thinking and community building. Drawing inspiration from her mentor, Dr. Jack Byrd, Shannon shares invaluable lessons on being present and supportive in our interactions. We dive into the foundation's commitment to nurturing democratic skills like generous interpretation and comfort with ambiguity, underscoring the ongoing importance of fostering wisdom in our everyday lives.   More About Our Wise Guest - Dr. Shannon Wheatley Hartman Shannon Wheatley Hartman is the President of the Interactivity Foundation, a nonpartisan and non-advocacy organization founded decades ago in Parkersburg, WV. The foundation has grown to become a nationally recognized leader, focused on strengthening democracy through discussion.     Shannon is an expert facilitator who has been working to advance civic discussion skills and mindsets in communities and classrooms for over 15 years. She entered the nonprofit world through academia. She has a Ph.D. in political science and has taught at several universities. Whether she is teaching a class or working with a community group, she has always been passionate about creating the conditions and nurturing the necessary skills to help groups think better together.   Democracy isn't defined by the absence of difference or conflict, but the ability to celebrate differences and work together through disagreements. Shannon and the work of the Interactivity Foundation helps to support this in classrooms, communities, and workplaces.     Perhaps unintentionally, Shannon tests out all of her new discussion experiments on her family. She lives with a wonderfully supportive husband, three daughters, and a very enthusiastic dog, “Scouty Boy.” They gravitate to activities that encourage exploration, like traveling, hiking, mountain biking, and wild baking experiments.   Shannon joins us from Philadelphia.   Get ready! The program opened its first kitchen in Monongalia County in 2022. Additionally, meals are focused on local foods, which supports a more localized food system in partnership with the West Virginia Food and Farm Coalition. Programs like this are vital to the health of West Virginia's children, according to co-founder Mandy Curry. “The earlier we can provide the healthiest food to them, the better. We know they are getting a much better start as they progress in life,” she says. The Highland Scenic Highway is now among the most popular scenic routes in the Mountain State, and it's growing more popular as a destination by the year, especially in the last two years, according to area officials. “There are many more visitors coming to Pocahontas County,” says Cara Rose executive director of the Pocahontas County Convention and Visitors Bureau, “and while I don't have traffic counts specifically for the highway, we're seeing more motorcycles and more cars with bikes and kayaks.” The 43-mile parkway, which ascends into the Yew Mountains, a subset of the Allegheny Mountains, allows visitors to explore a variety of highland environments without walking far from the car—cranberry glades, spruce forests and the highest waterfall in the state. Jim Justice. “This achievement underscores our unwavering commitment to preserving our state's outdoor heritage and ensuring our abundant wildlife and natural resources are protected for generations to come.” The elk transport, which brings West Virginia's elk population to 140-150, is the final of two transports the WVDNR has planned this year. The WVDNR has recorded 60 native elk calf births since launching its Elk Restoration Project in 2016. In the coming weeks, construction of the Tomblin Wildlife Management Area Visitor Center and Elk Viewing Platform in Logan County, announced by Gov. Justice in February, will begin and bring millions of economic development activity to the surrounding region. Read more: https://wvdn.com/135313/   #3 – From WBOY-TV – Take me home, country roads! Have you ever wondered where the Mountain State roads you drive regularly might take you if you just kept going? U.S. Rt. 50 is the main road that connects north central West Virginia with places like Parkersburg and southern Ohio as well as the Eastern Panhandle and Maryland. The route runs from Ocean City, Maryland, all the way to Sacramento, California.  Running mostly parallel to Interstate 79, U.S. Rt. 19 is another highly trafficked road for those in north central West Virginia as it intersects many towns. The road stretches vertically across the country from Erie, Pennsylvania all the way down to Memphis, Florida, near the Tampa area.  Check out the story at WBOY to learn more road map geography. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Saturday, March 23, 2024. Blennerhassett Island may be a beautiful park to visit, but it also boasts a fascinating history. A popular brewery in Morgantown expands. And learn about Chef Boyardee's West Virginia connection…on today's daily304. #1 – From THE HISTORY PROJECT – In the middle of the Ohio River between Parkersburg, West Virginia and Belpre, Ohio, sits Blennerhassett Island, a place named for the Anglo-Irish gentry who built their estate there in the 18th century and named it for themselves. But this paradise would not last after the arrival of Aaron Burr … Learn more about Blennerhassett Island with The History Project, the Daily304's presentation of famous people, places and events that shaped West Virginia. Local artist Brian Pickens contributed freehand wall art that evokes the crisp, green taste of hops. Pickens also painted the support posts running down the center of the space to look like vibrant tree trunks. Local craftsmen Scott Frederick and Michael Barr created high-top tables using now-rare Chestnut lumber reclaimed from an old church in McDowell County. Rittenour took some of the same lumber and made one-of-a-kind tap handles replete with Appalachian history. The Beer Hall will feature 10-16 Chestnut Brew Works beers on tap. Cheers! Read more: https://www.dominionpost.com/2024/03/06/chestnut-brew-works-new-pleasant-streetspace-celebrates-appalachia-craft-beer/   #3 – From WV EXPLORER – Did you know the iconic image of Chef Boyardee that adorns so many food packages worldwide is that of a genuine person? Not only that -- he has West Virginia connections. In the early 1900s, The Greenbrier was managed by the same company that managed The Plaza Hotel in New York City, according to historian Bob Conte. When they sent staff down to The Greenbrier, among that staff was 16-year-old Ettore Boiardi, anglicized as “Hector Boyardee.” A native of Italy, Boiardi worked as an apprentice chef in his hometown and in Paris and London before boarding ship for Ellis Island in 1914. He eventually worked his way up to Head Chef at The Plaza Hotel, where he served President Woodrow Wilson and troops returning from WWI. After serving a stint at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, Boiardi opened his first restaurant in Cleveland, Ohio, where patrons frequently asked for samples and recipes of his spaghetti sauce. He met Maurice and Eva Weiner, owners of a local self-service grocery store chain who helped Boiardi and his brother Paolo develop a process for canning and distributing spaghetti sauce. In 1938, production was moved to rural Milton, Pa., where its products were sold under the “Chef Boy-Ar-Dee” brand. And the rest, they say, is history.
