Show #468   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Saturday 11th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   TESLA MODEL Y SPOTTED IN PUBLIC FOR FIRST TIME EVER "ChargePoint made an unprecedented find - the Tesla Model Y was spotted in the public. The captured photo (sadly only one) shows us the rear of the small SUV, based on the Model 3, which will enter the market in late 2020 to potentially become the best-selling Tesla ever. It's promising to see that Tesla is already advanced enough to release the prototype/pre-production unit on public roads for test or demonstration purposes. We believe this to be the very first ever public sighting of the Model Y and perhaps it's being tested on the ChargePoint network ahead of its grand launch." reports InsideEVs.com.   HERE'S EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WORKHORSE Autoblog look at Workhorse: "General Motors is negotiating the sale of its shuttered factory in Lordstown, Ohio, to a company that builds electric trucks. The company confirmed Wednesday that it's in talks with Cincinnati-based Workhorse Group to sell the huge facility, and also announced plans to invest $700 million in three Ohio factories to create 450 additional jobs. The potential sale, first announced on Twitter by President Donald Trump, could preserve some jobs at the sprawling plant 60 miles east of Cleveland. But it also dashes any hope that GM would reopen the factory where until March, it had built cars for more than five decades."   "This Wednesday, things went sort of nuts when President Trump tweeted that GM’s Lordstown Plant would be bought by Workhorse, a maker of electric trucks, even though the deal is by no means settled. Most of us don’t know that much about Workhorse" reports Jalopnik, not impressed with the truck they're making to go up against Rivian and Tesla trucks: "Compared to other EV trucks like the Rivian, the design and engineering of the W-15 feels pretty clunky and crude; the styling seems amateurish, and the specs aren’t exactly impressive. Sure, the dual electric motors making about 450 horsepower is impressive and gives a very good 0-60 time of 5.5 seconds, but the far more important number, the range, is a pretty disappointing 80 miles. Workhorse is also in the running, in partnership with VT Hackney, for the contract to produce the next-generation USPS mail truck. Perhaps this plant purchase is in anticipation of getting this deal? We’ve heard nothing from the Post Office to suggest any vendor has been selected."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/05/08/gm-lordstown-workhorse/   https://jalopnik.com/heres-everything-you-need-to-know-about-workhorse-the-1834673218   TESLA REGISTERS FIRST VIN BATCH OF RIGHT-HAND DRIVE MODEL 3 "Within two weeks since opening the online design studio in UK, Tesla registered the first batch of Model 3 VIN numbers for right-hand drive markets (probably the UK, which is first on the list)." reports InsideEVs: "The latest batch is for 442 Model 3 according to Model 3 VINs, including: ≈70% AWD, ≈70% International (outside North America) and ≈64% RHD (around 283). First deliveries are expected next month, but it's too early to try figure out how big demand will be in the UK, but obviously at least four-digits in the initial period we believe as the car is getting very positive reviews."   https://insideevs.com/news/348997/tesla-register-first-vin-batch-rhd-model-3/   MERCEDES-BENZ SHOWS CONCEPT EQV ELECTRIC MPV IN BARCELONA "Shortly after the world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, the Concept EQV completed its first urban journey. In the port of Barcelona, the concept vehicle showed that the electric future for premium MPVs is just around the corner." Now the Concept EQV has completed its first public drive and presented itself in the port of Barcelona in front of a fitting backdrop. The vehicle is aimed equally at families, sports enthusiasts or quality shuttle services. With its progressive exterior, the Concept EQV caused a stir with passers-by in the fashion and design city. In particular, the EQ-typical radiator grille with its continuous LED strip left a lasting impression. Mercedes-Benz Concept EQV specs: 100 kWh battery pack up to 400 km (250 miles) of range 150 kW electric motor front-wheel drive fast charging – 100 km (62 miles) in 15 minutes at DC fast charger top speed of 160 km/h (100 mph)   https://insideevs.com/news/349058/video-mercedes-benz-concept-eqv-barcelona/   MG ZS EV TO DEBUT IN EUROPE NEXT WEEK AT LONDON MOTOR SHOW "MG announced the European debut of its first all-electric model, the MG ZS EV, at the London Motor Show (16-19 May) at the London ExCel. The electric ZS will enter the UK market in autumn.Since March, MG received almost 800 expressions of interest for the ZS EV, which turns out to be the most for any pre-launched model in the company’s history." writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "The company intends to open order book at the show and begin sales on September 1, 2019. Pricing and specifications will be confirmed closer to market launch."   https://insideevs.com/news/348899/mg-zs-ev-debut-europe-london/   VOLVO'S POLESTAR PICKS BRITAIN FOR NEW R&D CENTER, IGNORING BREXIT "Swedish luxury electric carmaker Polestar, which is jointly owned by Volvo Cars and its Chinese parent Geely, is setting up an R&D center in Britain to develop future passenger cars, it said on Wednesday." says Autoblog today: "The move comes as Britain's impending exit from the European Union has dented UK car manufacturing, prompting several carmakers to cut local production and warn that Brexit was deterring suppliers and EU workers. Polestar, whose cars are known for their signature Polestar gold seat belts, said there were no special considerations about Brexit in making its decision as the move was more about tapping existing engineering expertise in the UK. Polestar intends to initially employ 60 engineers in Britain and expand its team over the rest of the year."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/05/09/polestar-volvo-britain-development-center/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.     TESLA MODEL 3 U.S. DELIVERIES DIP AS IT SHIPS TO GLOBAL MARKETS First week of February and InsideEVs are estimating the January Tesla Model 3 sales numbers: "The expected result of shifting to overseas is seen in our estimates, but that doesn’t imply that demand for the Model 3 has fallen. In fact, demand abroad is high and is being fulfilled now, so on the U.S. side, a slip was inevitable. Our estimates show that Tesla delivered some 6,500 Mo del 3 to U.S. buyers in January 2019. Yes, that’s down considerably compared to the later months of 2018, but it’s actually way up from the 1,875 sold in the U.S. in January 2018."   As for the LEAF: "How will the announcement of the upcoming 2019 Nissan LEAF Plus (e+) impact Nissan LEAF U.S. deliveries? (LEAF sales are bleak at 717 for January, but this still parallels January 2016 and 2017 figures. It’s not really fair to compare LEAF sales from January 2018.)"   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-sales-u-s-january-2019/   https://insideevs.com/january-2019-u-s-plug-in-ev-sales-report-card/   TOYOTA'S HUGE SALES DIP MARKS A ROUGH START TO 2019 "Toyota is already down 7.1% on North American automobile sales this year, as compared to January 2018, and Lexus isn’t far behind with a 2.8% decrease in volume." reports Jalopnik: "Most of the losses are lead by aging models like the Prius."   https://jalopnik.com/toyotas-huge-sales-dip-marks-a-rough-start-to-2019-1832303081   TESLA’S CCS ADAPTER ENABLES MODEL S AND X TO CHARGE UP 120 KW, WILL NOT BE STANDARD Some confusion around a story over the weekend about Tesla CCS connectors. "Starting this month, Tesla is including a new CCS adapter with all new Model S and Model X orders in Europe so that owners can take advantage of the growing CCS fast-charging networks on the old continent, according to an update on their website." reported Electrek. And then updated their story: "Tesla responded to this story saying that the update on their website was inaccurate. It will not be standard and it’s unclear when it will be available as an accessory." "Tesla has updated its charging connector support page in Europe to show that the new CCS adapter is standard on “all custom order Model S and Model X vehicles from February 1.” Update: Tesla now says that it was a mistake on their part and it will not be standard."   https://electrek.co/2019/02/02/tesla-ccs-adapter-standard-model-s-x-europe/   MERCEDES-BENZ EQV ELECTRIC MINIVAN TO DEBUT IN GENEVA "Mercedes-Benz will unveil an electric MPV concept at this year’s Geneva motor show, previewing a rival machine to the forthcoming Volkswagen ID Buzz." reports Autocar: "Confirmed at the launch of the facelifted V-Class MPV, the Concept EQV is described as a ‘near-series study’ that will likely closely mirror the production version. It's the fifth confirmed vehicle in the German firm’s electric EQ range, following the EQC SUV that launched last year and the forthcoming EQA hatchback, EQB small SUV and EQS luxury saloon. Those models, along with the EQV, are all due to go on sale by 2022. Mercedes-Benz Vans board member Wilfried Porth described the EQV as the firm’s “next big statement” in the class. Mercedes-Benz Vans already offers the electric eVito and will launch the eSprinter later this year. The eVito is based on the architecture of the regular van and is intended as a ‘last-mile’ delivery vehicle suited to urban use. It's powered by three lithium ion batteries with a total capacity of 41.4kWh, connected to a 113bhp, 221lb ft motor, providing a range of around 93 miles."   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/mercedes-benz-eqv-electric-people-carrier-due-geneva   31 COMPANIES JOIN DRIVE TO SWITCH TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES "More than 30 global corporates have now pledged to switch their road fleets to electric vehicles through the EV100 initiative, which has set a target of electrifying two million vehicles by 2030 through its membership." according to Michael Holder for Business Green: "Published today, The Climate Group's first annual report on its EV100 initiative reveals 31 companies with a combined revenue of over $500bn have now made EV commitments as part of the campaign, including high profile names such as BT, IKEA, Unilever, EDF, and Heathrow Airport. The report provides a detailed update on the commitments made by 23 member companies, which have together pledged to switch 145,000 vehicles to electric in 66 markets around the world by 2030. Collectively, the EV commitments from these 23 firms could help to save an estimated 6.6 million metric tonnes of CO2, the equivalent carbon footprint of 1.9 million UK households, according to the report."   https://www.businessgreen.com/bg/news/3070355/ev100-31-companies-join-drive-to-switch-to-electric-vehicles   ELECTRIC VW FOR LESS THAN $22,900 COMING BY 2023-2024 "Michael Jost, Head of Strategy at Volkswagen, said officially that in 2023, or at the latest in 2024, the company will introduce a truly affordable electric car, which will start from less than €20,000 ($22,900). It will be a small car, the size of a T-Roc, which could be described as a compact crossover utility vehicle." reports Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: "“MEB and ID. Family are part of the Volkswagen Group’s electric offensive, for which the company is investing around €30 billion by 2023. By 2025, the Group brands plan to increase the number of their all-electric cars from six today to more than 50. Jost, who is also the head of Group Product Strategy, emphasizes that electric vehicles are by no means synonymous with sacrifice: “We build cool electric cars that are fun to drive, beautifully designed and fully networked.” He notes that starting in 2023, or at the latest in 2024, Volkswagen will launch an electric model, which will be the size of a T-Roc, for less than €20,000.”   https://insideevs.com/electric-vw-cheap-coming-2023/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week.
