Luxury car enthusiasts, mark your calendars! We're joined by RoShelle Salinas to reveal an exciting pop-up luxury ride and drive event happening May 9-10 at The Revere venue near Old Katy Road and 610. This last-minute addition to Houston's automotive calendar addresses a gap many noticed during January's Houston Auto Show - the absence of certain high-end brands that many were eager to experience. The collaborative event brings together luxury and electric vehicles that are currently on the market, all in one convenient location without the typical dealership pressure. Imagine test driving a Maserati, then hopping into the new Lucid Gravity, followed by experiencing Porsche's electric lineup with the Macan EV and Taycan - all within a single morning. Mercedes-Benz is bringing  the EQS sedan, GLE plug-in hybrid, and will have the electric G-Wagon and a Maybach on display. What makes this event particularly special is its accessibility. At just $8 per ticket, anyone 18+ with a valid driver's license and proof of insurance can participate in these luxury test drives. The Revere's location offers the setting for meaningful test drives, with routes specifically mapped for 6-10 minute experiences on low-traffic roads. Whether you're actively shopping for your next luxury vehicle or simply want the thrill of experiencing these automotive masterpieces, this pop-up event  is for any automotive enthusiasts.Don't miss this rare opportunity to compare multiple luxury brands side-by-side in a relaxed environment. The event runs 10am-2pm on both Friday and Saturday, with tickets available online or at the venue. New Renault Alpine A110s were spotted testing in Fla. Will the divine A110 come to the US? We definitely hope so!5/1/2024 is the 30th anniversary of Aryton Sennas death. We discuss this great and complicated figure.Trauma surgeon safetyThe Porsche 911 turbo turns 50 this year. We say happy birthday! Adams talks about its history and evolution then lists the 5 most collectible models. And then the three of us pick our all-time favorite 911 turbo. A Porsche dealer in Charleston, SC is suing a former sales manager for taking bribes from customers who wanted in-demand cars (think GT3, GT3 RS, 911 S/T, and 911 Turbo S). CoC wonders if this practice isn't more widespread, and why dealerships don't have small committees make these important decisions rather than individual employees. Finally, Steve-0 takes Mercedes to task for dumping too many EQS BEVs on their dealers (who don't want them), having to cut EQS prices by OMG $20,000, and for insisting on making their heretofore wonderful V8 C63 sedan a four-cylinder hybrid. We predict tepid sales. #carsoncallpodcast #steveautos #traumasurgeon #traumasurgeonsafety #autosafety #carsafety #porsche911turbo #porscheturbo #porscheturbo50jahre #mercedeseqs #mercedesc63 #porscheedealerbribe #porschecharleston #porschecharlestonbribe

Max "Morton" Pasichnyk, the esteemed Ukrainian producer, stands as the creative force behind the heavy/power metal studio project Morton. His vision for the project initially blended classic heavy metal with modern power-metal influences, culminating in a unique sonic identity. Despite evolving stylistically over time, traces of heavy-metal roots remain evident in every composition. Grimoire marked Morton's debut release, a five-track endeavor entirely composed, performed, recorded, and produced by Max himself, disseminated freely across the internet. As Max assembled a live lineup while recording, Morton transitioned from a studio project to a full-fledged band, characterized by rigorous rehearsals and relentless dedication to crafting new material. In November 2010, Morton unveiled their inaugural music video, "Sleeping King," earning acclaim from listeners and peers worldwide. This success spurred the band's focus on crafting their debut full-length album, which materialized as Come Read The Words Forbidden, released in Ukraine and Japan in the summer of 2011, accompanied by an official live video for "Brotherhood Of Light." Come Read The Words Forbidden's global release by AFM Records in October 2011, followed by its distribution in Russia, solidified Morton's presence across the globe. The subsequent year saw Morton sharing stages with renowned acts like U.D.O., Mike Terrana, Within Temptation, Coroner, Oomph, and My Favorite Scar, signaling a new chapter in the band's live performance repertoire. In September 2012, Morton released their third music video, further expanding their reach across various digital platforms and musical TV channels. Looking ahead, the band anticipates the release of their second full-length album in 2015, poised to continue their musical journey under Max Morton's visionary leadership. It's one of those topics that certain people never seem to be able to get past. But we take a different view, looking at it from a few angles to get you thinking about not only how you're using the sync button, but how other things you do in your DJing may or may not help you to do a better job. Other topics covered this month include removing duplicate files from your library: how they get there, what's the best way of getting rid of them, and how to stop it happening in the future, in which we also touch on the difference between being a music hoarder and being a DJ collecting songs to use as tools. When it comes to making DJ mixes, one question people ask is how many different musical genres should be featured in any given mix? And so we help one student to figure out the best way of approaching this in his regular Mixcloud mix series. We also have a question on transitioning using EQs, and we talk about the best way to objectively figure out how good your DJ transitions sound (or otherwise). There are also questions on DJ lighting and how to build a great light show, including the technology to use, and the thorny issue of when DJ software updates stop working on your gear because your gear is not the most current. Want to get your question answered on an episode of this podcast? Digital DJ Tips course owners get to ask questions in their student-only group. Your first step to getting involved is to buy a DJ course, so come and join our community at https://www.digitaldjtips.com.

On the first episode of Hot Pursuit!, Hannah and Matt discuss Hannah's trip to Austria to be the first journalist to drive the electric Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon. Can it even come close to comparing to the gas-powered G that has existed since 1979? Then, it's a look at BMW's polarizing XM hybrid, its most powerful SUV but not its best--we'll tell you why. Meanwhile, Matt is driving over New York City curbs in another expensive V8 SUV this week, the Jeep 392 Rubicon, and Hannah has a few thoughts about it from that time in Moab. Plus, Matt just bought a Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack Widebody - but how fast is it really?     Follow Hannah and Matt on Instagram:     @HannahElliottxo     @mattmiller1973     Find more on  Hi. I'm Hannah Elliott and I'm Matt Miller, and this is Hot Pursuit. All right, welcome to the first episode of our new podcast. Hannah Elliott from Bloomberg Pursuits and me Matt Miller from Bloomberg Television. We're going to walk you through everything that's hot in the world of autos and motorcycles. I point out, Hannah, because Ducati has released a brand new version of the Multi Strata. This is the V four version. It's called the RS. And the really cool thing about this bike, and then we'll get back to cars, is that it has the Desmo dramatic valve operation. Once again, they've gone away from that to reduce, you know, the amount of mechanical work that you had to do, the amount of upkeep you had to do, and now they've gone back just for this one version. So I'm pretty pumped about that. That's cool. It all sounds very complicated. I'm more scrambler girl myself or a dirt by I love a dirt bike. But of course we're focused mainly on cars, and you have been very much focused on the Mercedes g Wagon. So we're going to talk about that. We're going to talk about a trip that you recently took to Austria to test out a new version of that. We're also going to talk about a couple of the vehicles that we're driving, which I think people might cross shop with a G Wagon, you know, wealthy people that are looking for some kind of big, gigantic suv that has a lot of power behind it. And then we're going to talk about the new car that I recently bought, which maybe is kind of the other end of the spectrum. It wasn't very expensive, it's not an suv and it's like a dinosaur. So we'll talk about my Dodge Challenger RT scatpack wide body. Unfortunate name notwithstanding, I have to say every time when we say that name, I pringe. I think of like Dean Martin and you know Frank Sinatra. Yeah, yeah, Shahinatra was out there in a mopar type car and I don't know the history, but I think that's why they called it that. Anyway, let's kick it off with the G Wagon. So this is I think one of the coolest vehicles in automotive history. And I would say you probably agree because you're a big fan. Tell us about what you did over the weekend, so I have to say I felt pretty lucky. I was the first non Mercedes Benz employee and first American to drive the electric G Wagon, which is really exciting because we've been hearing about this since twenty eighteen when Arnold Schwarzenegger said he wanted one and Mercedes said, okay, we'll make it. Basically, this was back at the G Wagon launch in Detroit, which Matt, I think you'll remember, well, yes, but yeah, all of that to say, I went to go drive it in Austria on the Shekel Mountain also pronounced she Shekel if you want to that tea in there. It's a proven ground in Austria where Mercedes has all of their G Wagons, and I went up there to do some driving in the electric g This was a pre production electric G Wagon, and I have to say it was pretty fun. That's so cool. So I bought back a couple of years ago when I was living in Berlin the new generation of the G Wagon and right inside the door you get a little badge on all of the new G's that says something like tested on the stuckle or proven on the stuckle Jeckel proof, Yes, exactly something like that. So for g Wagon owners, the place is magical and maybe mysterious because it's in Grots and like hardly anybody ever goes there. But basically this is where Magna Steyer makes the g Wagon right there. They're not made by Mercedes in house. Yes, this is a little known fact. So the company was formerly called Poop. Now it's called Magnet. It's a bigger corporation that bought it out, but same company, same location, and it's kind of a mecha for g Wagon owners to go there. There is a factory, there's an experience center which is right by the airport, and it's it is an iconic vehicle. I mean, how many car models can you say I've been made without interruption since the seventies. I mean, it's pretty cool. I have to say, no, it's awesome, and it's in super high demand, even though it's so dang expensive, right, I mean when I bought mine, they were like one twenty five to start and there was a two year waiting list. I don't think the waiting list has come down, it's gone the other direction, and I know the price has gone up. Yeah. Yeah, that's a really good point. And this will be a challenge. I hesitate to get everyone all excited about the electric G because right now Magna makes about forty thousand G wagons per year in that facility. I was in the facility last week. It's very cool, but the production volume is limited. And I've asked Mercedes, hey, how are you going to add in all of these extra electric GEW wagons on top of your maxed out production line? And you know, they say they have a plan. They say they have They're going to have flexible shifts. They're currently running two shifts five days a week at Magna. They don't want to tell me if they're going to add a third shift. Apparently overnight shifts are tricky. You tend to get more fabrication errors in the overnight shift, so they don't necessarily want to go to a third overnight shift. But bottom line, yeah, last year there were two year wait times for new G wagons and Mercedes actually stopped taking orders on the G. It got so bad. They are taking orders again now. But you know, if you order an electric GEW wagon, I think patients will be your highest virtuo because there's going to be high demand and production will be is a big question mark. We'll put it that way. What's going to be called? Is it the EQG because all of their others like the Big the ASS is the EQS now the electric version, and the obviously the E is the EQE the electric version. So is this the EQG. But that's a great question. We've been calling it colloquially the EQG. Mercedes has been using that loosely, but that is not the official name. And Mercedes has said they're going to announce the official name next year when they announced the pricing and they have this big world debut of it. So we don't know for sure that EQG is the actual name. If you call it that now, people will probably know what you're talking about. But the official name will be announced next year. And we should say the one that I drove it was covered in camouflage. There is going to be some slight, slight, slight difference in the roofline on this Electric G Class I, and they pointed it out to me. I can't even tell the difference. It looks basically this. I mean, I don't have that refined and I I guess they changed a few things to help with efficiency. But yeah, we'll know a lot more next year. It's gonna debut on twenty twenty four. I just have one question before we go on to competitors that you and I are driving this week. On the interior of my G five hundred, the European versions were called that the US version of the G five to fifty kind of the base model. They didn't use the new MBUX, they didn't use the new infotainment system. We still had the old one. Were you able to suss out what they're going to use in terms of the interior electronics package on the new one. I have to believe that they're going to use the new system. The one that I drove was draped in a black cloth. I knew it. Although they did lift up. We were lifting up the cloak, so to speak, to change certain off road modes, to do the rock mode, to do the G turn. I should talk to you about that in a second. And it looks like the news is in there. Don't quote me on that, but it would be ridiculous for them not to put it in. So I'm like ninety percent sure that it'll be in there, and I think that's what I saw the G turn. I have to talk about this briefly. So Mercedes is doing this G turn in the new Electric g which basically you push a button and it flips the whole thing around in a three hundred and sixty degree circle without going forward to backward. It just like what does a spin? Basically? Yes, yes, And I think this is becoming a thing like remember the crab walk from the Electric Hummer, and then the Cadillac Electric Escalade has ballet mode, which like self parks. I feel like all of these new electric SUVs think they have to have like one party trick y p and the G turn is the party track, all right, So the new g Wagon is going to have real, real steering, then, is my takeaway. Yeah, let's talk about the other big, expensive, at least partially electric suv that you're driving right now, which is really controversial, the BMW x M. I already already spent a week in it, so I have my own thoughts, uh, and I think everyone who comes even near this thing as thoughts. So what are your thoughts on the BMW XM. My thought is it's ugly. It's big, and it's ugly. I can't look past the wheels which are just like these big rome break things discs. It's just big and lumbering. I'm not necessarily bothered by our new beaver tooth BMW grill which this has. Doesn't bother those don't bother me. It's just the whole thing. It's Matt. I think I heard you say the other day you were kindly referred to it as brutalist, which maybe maybe, I mean, that would be a kind way of describing it. But and you know, the exterior is it just looks rather unsophisticated and then of course worse. The interior has some design notes that I raised my eyebrow at, especially the ceiling, which is kind of like a Eastern European nightclub in the nineties. Uh. Yes, it's like lined and swayed, and it's got mood lighting and there are like sort of uneven ridges all across the top. It looks a little bit like a mountain range. Baby. I'm not sure what they were going for, but that's just the looks. I've got a lot of other thoughts about how it drives to I mean, I think also say I think it's more expensive than the g Wagon. Yes, I do think it has a brutalist look, is very aggressive it's imposing and I like that it's very big and massive. The Germans would say vuchtik, which I think is a really fitting way to say it. I love the badges on the back. You know. They have two BMW in Signa insignias on the top sides each side of the winds, which is kind of like what the M one had on its flying buttresses, if that's what you call those things. And this is the only other dedicated M car that they've made. There won't be any other base version. It's only an MV vehicle. I don't understand why they d tuned the V eight, which is in the X five M. It's more powerful in the X five than it is in this, and this is supposed to be their pinnacle like halo vehicle. And I also don't understand why they left out air suspension. I guess the engineers thought it would be troublesome for some reason. But if I'm going to pay one hundred and sixty thousand dollars before I check any boxes, I definitely want air suspension. And I want like some kind of sun roof or panoramic moon roof for something other than the horribly ugly headliner that they've put in there just for design cred. Yeah, I have to I have to agree. I think it's it's wildly expensive and the engine does sound and feel really unsophisticated. To me, that was just the That was my overall take. It just felt very unsophisticated, but not in a cool like you know muscly Way. It just felt rough. And I also, I think we have to give them props. You know, this is a six hundred and forty four horse power vehicle. It's their most powerful vehicle, I think at the moment. Yeah, you can check that, but no, it is. It does zero to sixty faster than the G Wagon and you know I love the g really fast. Yeah, and I stop on that thing and I can pretty much, you know, dominate Beverly Hills if I want to, And yes I have been. I apologize to anyone who's been around me lately driving this because it does make you feel a little bit bossy. But it's it's just you know, it's long. It's it's over sixteen feet long. It's just a brick. It's a fast brick. The anti roll bars are so strong that it's really impressive in a vehicle. Of that size and weight. But otherwise you know, it's comfy, but obviously it's for such a big vehicle. It's going to be comfy and it's kind of luxurious, but that's what you expect when you pay one hundred and sixty grand. So, and I do like the screen. There's that curve screen in the dashboard. Nice. Nice. Yeah, No, they did some okay things with it, but they should have it should be firing on all cylinders, yes, agreed, plus electric power. Speaking of unsophisticated, I'm driving the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon three ninety two right now, yes, which is obviously a car that you reviewed in twenty twenty one, and I love that you pointed out back then that you thought it was too expensive at like seventy five grand, and now you know, less than two years later, I'm driving it and the base model costs ninety three grand before you check any boxes as well, So like the price has gone twenty three percent, and it is awesome. It's so much fun. It's so loud. I drive over for every curb that I can. Today. I just crossed over a median from interstate to a service road, and I think you have to where you get your license for votes. But but man, is it expensive? Why is it so much? Yeah, this is this is a case of an arms race in terms of pricing for these SUVs. And I think I thought it was expensive when I drove it two years ago. And Jeep is charging this much because they know people will pay this much. It's it's crazy the amount of brand loyalty people who buy Jeeps have. This is another icon. I mean, we were talking about the G class being an icon. The Jeep is older than the G. We have to give props there and it is so beloved. And you know, when I drove it, it was in Moab. I was out there with Jim Morrison, not the cool Jim Morrison, Morrison, not the dead Jim Morrison, the vice president of Jeep. And he told me that basically one hundred percent some of them leave the shop with heavy modifications on them. So people are already pricing them way higher than the starting price. So when we see an MSRP of close two hundred thousand, I think we can assume that most of them don't even leave the factory at that price. Yeah, you're definitely not getting off the dealership yet without without six figures. Yeah, and you know, I don't think the Jeep Rubicon is a luxury vehicle, but they're certainly putting their pricing up where it feels like they're aspiring to be considered amongst some of these other luxury subs that are expensive. And it's all margin. Like if I look at the Jeep yes Wrangler three ninety two at one hundred grand out the door, and I remind myself that you can buy a Dodge Challenger scatpack wide body for sixty and it's got the same engine, you know, and it's also got all the bells and whistles over the base Challenger. So and they're charging an extra forty thousand for the Jeep. It's just insane. By the way, I did just buy that Dodge Challenger. And I want to talk about here we go with you for a second, because I so I got it since this is the last call, right, this is the last year they're making these, and this is like the oldest must be one of the oldest cars in production, you know, from a G class standpoint, and they'll go back the seventies. They redesigned it once. Sure, this hasn't been redesigned since two thousand and seven, with the exception of putting it on that bigger fenders. And well, I think it's cool because it's it's still attractive, at least in my opinion, and obviously it's totally subjective. But this six point four liter V eight is so much power. But they put it in such a huge boat that half the time I'm just spinning my wheels, which is frankly a lot of fun. I do it a lot, and after two weeks I'm almost done with this set of tires. What color did you get? And how is it? Opening the doors in like a garage situation? So obviously, because it's a two door and the doors are so long, it's very difficult. I just don't park next to anybody, which curiates my wife. I'll go to the other side of the parking lot to be alone. In terms of the color, it's F eight green, like an army green, which is a very cool I think it's a throwback to the seventies, as are all of Dodge's colors, and that's why I bought it, you know. It reminded me of a car that like my great grandmother had, although her wasn't quite as sporty, and I just love the kind of big American V eight feel. It reminds me of driving a car and Grand Theft Auto four. I think it was where you know, you just you pull the trigger and it starts to make a lot of noise and slowly roll and pick up momentum because it's not super fast here the sixty and then when you let go of it, it it just keeps going because it's built up so much inertia. So I like that momentum car. Yes, No, have you gone around any corner as yet? I haven't. You know. I'm kicking out at the back end of this car around every like on ramp and off ramp. But that's part of the fun for me. We'll see how it handles in the winter. I probably will be keeping in the garage when it snows. But it's just are you driving that in the city. I have driven into the city a couple of times. Wow? Any any looks? Uh? You know it's kind of a you're kind of a badass when you're driving this car. I think people are afraid of the kind of dudes who drive this car. In fact, I was getting personalized placed yesterday and I thought of getting Girl Dad because I have a daughter and I have another daughter. But then I thought I shouldn't get that because if I get into a road rage fight with somebody and then they see my license late, says girl Dad. You know, no one will take me seriously. How are you on the horn? Are you? Are you someone who honks? Honker? Yes, a lot, I'm a big honker. I do think it's a safety device more than anything. I'm just talking, just talking to you. Yes, you know. When I'm on the horn, I'm just making a statement, and I hope people, yeah, outside of my car understand what I'm saying. You know, go at that right turn quickly, please, that's right. You know, that's right. I prefer the horn to a hand gesture. I'm not a real gestory person. I like a horn. All right. That's going to do it. For our first episode of Hot Pursuit, I'm Matt Miller. You can catch me on Bloomberg Radio weekdays from ten am to one pm. I'm on Bloomberg Television weekdays from one pm to two pm. My Instagram is Matt Miller nineteen seventy three, and you can always catch my weekly car segments. What Matt Miller driving this week on YouTube, and I'm Hannah Elliott. You can find my writing on Bloomberg Pursuits, which is on Bloomberg dot com. You can also find me on x poor really known as Twitter at Hannah Elliott. That's two l's and two t's. I like to have everything. And then of course on Instagram. I'm definitely not putting my birth year on my Instagram account like Matt. It's just Hannah Elliott XO, keep it very simple. Two l's, two teas, and you can find me yeah, on Bloomberg dot com Slash Pursuits. All right, join us again next week for another episode of Hot Pursuit, same time, same place. I'm Matt Miliker and I'm Hannah Elliott, and this is BloombergSee Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: State of Generally Available Self-Driving, published by jefftk on August 22, 2023 on LessWrong. After a lot of discussions online where people try to argue about where self-driving tech is going but seem pretty confused about where the tech currently is, I wanted to give a bit of an overview of the current state. There are two main approaches: taxis and personal vehicles. There are many companies that have gotten as far as testing with a safety driver and/or with "trusted tester" riders, but as far as I can tell only two companies run commercial ride services open to the public without anyone in the driver's seat: Waymo (Google-affiliated) has been operating fully driverless vehicles in Phoenix AZ as a commercial ride service since 2020. They used to have a waitlist, but at this point anyone can download the app and try it. They've just expanded to SF, and have a waitlist for LA and Austin. As of 2023-08 they claim to be serving 10k weekly riders. Cruise (GM-affiliated) has been operating fully driverless vehicles in SF as a commercial ride service since 2022. They also now seem to cover Austin and Phoenix, and as of 2023-08-02 also claim 10k weekly riders. For personal vehicles, the most automation you can currently get is Level 3. These are systems where, when engaged, the person in the driver's seat can safely and legally read a book or otherwise not pay attention. If the system runs into a situation it can't handle, it alerts the driver, and if the driver doesn't take control it automatically stops the car. One option here, and maybe the only commercially available one, is Mercedes' Drive Pilot, which they launched in Germany in 2022. It only operates on highways under 40mph (essentially, stop-and-go traffic) but Mercedes takes on the legal liability when it's engaged. They claim their 2024 (as in, starting late this year) US models of their S-class and EQS sedans will have DrivePilot as an option and are approved in CA and NV. There may be other L3 systems in other countries - I'm having a lot of trouble telling what exactly launched with what models and whether it qualifies as L3. Overall, the current state is beyond "it's just a demo", but it's also still heavily limited by location and current conditions. Comment via: facebook, mastodon Thanks for listening. Also, while we're recording, you, George, are in Dallas at One Voice, and somebody won an award that you saw. Who would that have been?,: Well, not only did I see I was another candidate for the award. Another nominee., Speaker A: Oh, were you really? We're surrounded by brilliance.,: I'm sorry, man., Speaker C: And the nominations are there's two One.,: Voice nominees right here in the room. One of them won. Yeah. So there was a category called they did it Last Year as well, called Service Provider. And they make it very clear it's voted on by the public. And nominations are, I think, nominated also by the public, or at least the judges. So, yeah, I got nominated and my friend Uncle Roy did, and a whole bunch of other people that I know were nominated and Source Elements. So last year Source Elements took it, and this year they did, too, because they do good service.,Speaker C: There you go.,: They do good service and they do it all around the world.,: Thank you.,: Which is a lot of people.,Speaker C: Indeed. Yes, indeed. Indeed. Well, congratulations, Robert.,: In a way, I'd like to fuse the discomfort of me or Uncle Roy winning it's because we're buddies.,: You guys would have to sit at the same table.,: It's awkward. We're buddies and we do the same business. It just feels weird. It just feels weird. So anyway, congrats Source Elements, and maybe we'll see you next year.,Speaker B: Cool.,: Well, awesome.,Speaker C: I think the key actually, George the key is just don't turn up and you'll win an award.,: Yeah, well, it didn't work last year.,: Let me see. Do I have it here?,: The best speech, actually, was a woman who said, I thank myself.,Speaker A: Oh, really?,: Because it was a self submitted it was a self book on the gig. It was not through an agent. So she said, I thank myself.,Speaker A: There you go.,Speaker C: Well, that was a good nice.,Speaker B: Absolutely.,Speaker A: Yeah.,Speaker C: Now, we should be thanking Waves, actually, because Waves have just announced that you can use their plugins if you pay your subscription, I guess it is, on.,: Two computers without having to beg them for it because you could do it before by begging them and they would let you use it on two computers. But now it's official.,: Yeah, they would always let you do it on two computers if you maintained your whoop. Actually, that was one of the benefits of maintaining the whoop. But it is interesting. In the email, it very explicitly says this is for the same operator.,Speaker C: Here comes your takeaway.,: They're using the same exact business model as Adobe does, where the activation is good on two machines. If you log into a third machine on Adobe, it will tell you you're on a third machine and you must disable another machine and or it disables all of them and then you just start reactivating again. I can't remember which one it is.,Speaker A: But it tells you. Yeah, it tells me anyway.,: Yeah.,Speaker C: Which is really handy because as I've said many times before, I don't know anybody that actually works on one computer. We all have at least two devices that we work on. So it makes perfect sense to be able to do that. And it's funny because I don't know whether Twisted Wave you can use at one license on two computers. I'm pretty sure. Steinberg you can't.,: So, Twisted Wave, before the new subscription plan, it was unlimited. And I know that because I've used it on unlimited computers, technically. I mean, every computer I've ever owned has had a license.,: Just drop your license.,: I don't remember or recall reading any stipulation on the site about numbers of computers per user. So they may still be holding on to that same policy. I don't know. I would have to look that up.,Speaker C: Yeah, because it is very handy.,: I mean, it's interesting because it is like a potential leak of licenses for them. But at the same time, to police it, you have to make that into the licensing structure. Especially for Twisted Wave. They are doing their own. We're basically licensing through Ilock so we don't have to build it and we just live within the structure that they provide.,Speaker C: Which leads me to the next bit, because when you jumped online, George, we were having quite a deep discussion about the pros and cons of the eye lock.,: I was literally saying I was looking forward to the day where I could open my house, start my car, like you name it, with my eye lock.,: Well, once you're in an ecosystem, you want everything to be in that ecosystem.,: Whatever that yeah, my keychain would be so simplified.,Speaker C: It would be just one it would.,: Be nice if it was also a pass key as well. So it had the password manager for all of your stuff.,Speaker A: That would be nice.,: Yeah, it's really interesting. If I lock was supposed to get into that and then you could have a hardware dongle for your pass parents. My parents would actually relate to that. That's funny.,: Yeah. It's so much easier than saying, okay, use this authenticator app on your phone that you installed just to use this one thing and open that app up and then authenticate off of that. It's a lot for the user.,: The two factor authentication sometimes is annoying, and I'm trying to get all my two factor over to Google Off, but I have some that's through my text, some that's through the email, some that's through Google Off.,: I mean, it's difficult for us. I mean, imagine what it's like for know the know the regular user. Or Andrew.,: Or Andrew.,: It's very challenging. Well, I just checked on Twisted Wave FAQ. Can I install Twisted Wave on more than one Mac? Yes. According to Twistwave's license, you're allowed to install Twist Wave Mac on as many computers as you want, as long as you are the main user. It says the main user of the license. So that would mean to me that you could have an assistant or an editor or an engineer working with you sharing that license. That's what I interpret that as to say.,Speaker A: But anyway, okay, so Voodoo Sound bought Twisted Wave, and Mrs. Voodoo Sound was using Twisted Wave upstairs in the voice booth for her own voiceover company. Even though you could technically say that Voodoo Sound is at this premises, is that this is where it gets interesting, doesn't it? And you can get yourself in trouble.,: It's two simultaneous uses for it's, like being, very strictly speaking, even though it's one household, it is two uses on two jobs. And I think the intention is that you as a person cannot be duplicated, and so you should be using your license once, regardless of where you are. Here's the way Waves phrase it. Starting November 1, we will add a second license to all active creative Access subscriptions, allowing subscribers to use their plugins on separate computers without having to move licenses between devices. The second license is for use by the owner of the main product license only.,: Yeah, I think that's what Thomas's and.,: They do state it. And it's an honor system is what it is.,: He's just not getting as quite as a fine tooth. He didn't have an attorney rewrite it for him. It's just him trying and I'll speak for Thomas when I say this, so you have to verify with him is really he's going again by a bit of an honor system, which he's known for that anyway, like for many, many years. He didn't enforce really anything with the license.,: Did he do anything else or did he only do Twisted Wave?,: I only know him as doing Twisted Wave, period. And then he branched out to the iOS version and then the online version, and then the Windows version.,: His whole living. He feeds all twelve of his kids through Twisted Wave?,Speaker A: Yes.,: Well, he's got four platforms he's supporting now. So it's a lot to support and keep running and debugging.,: I mean, it's impressive because he had a pretty permissive licensing thing and he's a one man show. It's amazing actually, assuming he does not have some other second gig and that this isn't just like a side hustle, it's actually impressive.,: My understanding is he doesn't have a side hustle.,Speaker C: No, it's definitely not taking up enough.,: Time that he just can't do other things. Maybe he got the Mac version to a point where it was running so well that he thought, well, it's time, let's get the Windows version built. So the Windows version is fully released and it supports stacks just like the Mac version. You got to bring BYO plugins because there's not a single free plugin on a Windows machine. So you start right out of the gate by having to get plugins. Right? That's a big difference right there. But I have a few plugins of my own that I prefer to use that are totally free for those who really need to set it all up. And one of them is because of Robo himself, said have you ever used Melda Productions plugins? And I was like, Nope. And I have installed and used them and for the free bundle that they have is pretty darn feature rich.,Speaker A: There's some kick ass stuff in there, isn't there?,: Pretty darn good. Yeah, exactly. So I have used the melba. EQ. I haven't used much else from them, but it did a fine job for some folks. But I've really been enjoying being able to support that cross platform at last without having to run an actual Windows PC to make a stack. As long as I build that stack using VST plugins on my Mac, it will load those plugins and everything on the PC, which is nice.,Speaker A: Yeah, that's cool.,: Yeah.,Speaker C: Back to Thomas though. If you meet the guy, which I'm sure one day he will jump on a silver bird and head to North America at some point depending how much money he makes out of Twisted Wave. But you can tell like you meet the guy, you know, when you meet someone, you know they're just a really honest character and incredibly intelligent, obviously. And that's thomas. That's the guy.,: If he starts showing up at conferences and sponsoring, we'll know.,Speaker C: Exactly.,: As far as I can tell, he has spent absolutely $0 on marketing.,Speaker A: But it's a good product and good products market themselves sometimes, don't they? Let's be honest.,: That's what I'm saying. Can you please tell that to our department of marketing?,: Well, I mean, honestly, I never had a marketing budget until the last year or so. And now that George the tech is a team of people, marketing is becoming much more of a real thing. Like I really need to get the marketing machine running. So when you start hearing George LATEC on different places and different platforms and you start getting tired of hearing that name then it means I'm doing the right thing. So that means my marketing is working.,Speaker C: There was a thing that we used to talk about in radio and when you're at the point of hearing a song, if you work in a radio station that is driving you insane because you're just overloading on that song, you usually find that it's just starting to get some traction with the listener.,: The regular listener. Yeah, the listener in the real world.,: So as soon as we're sick of George, that's when George really hit it. That's when George changes his name to Uncle George.,Speaker C: No.,: Can't be.,Speaker A: Uncle George.,: My dad's Uncle George, Uncle George.,Speaker C: But the whole uncle thing. Yeah. All I can think of when you say uncle anyone is some old bloke in a pair of shorts that are too tight with one knacker hanging out the side. That's what it sounds.,: You got to work on that for your Uncle Roy.,: I'm just not letting my daughter call.,Speaker A: Yeah.,Speaker C: Now speaking plugins robbo, you've been mucking around with the SSL bundle?,Speaker A: Yeah, I downloaded it because I'd had the Slate Digital bundle and I sort of got to the point where there was only a couple of things that I really sort of liked and continued using being a couple of compressors, the gray compressor, fresh air, which is free anyway, and a couple of other things. So I actually let that go. And talking of budgets, I sort of realized, hey, I've got X amount of dollars a month free. What other bundles are out there to sort of rent and have a play with? And so I downloaded the SSL one which I've been playing with for a couple of months now. And can I just say, there's not a dog in there. It's so good. There's so much stuff that's sort of really nice to play with. I mean, compressors and EQS go without saying. There's some other stuff like they've they've done some instrument specific stuff. They've done, like a drum strip and a guitar strip. The vocal strip I kind of like, I guess. I mean, it's not a dog, but I don't really use it a lot. The drum strip I use all the time. The guitar strip, I don't really do a lot with guitars, so I don't have much to do with that. But the other stuff that's really good is they call it the flex verb, which is their reverb and the X delay, which is also really cool. So, yeah, there's a bunch of stuff in there that's really worth playing around with. And I guess when the time comes and I sort of get sick of it, what will I keep? I would definitely keep the reverb. The DSR is very nice. Their limiter, which they call X limit, has been the final plugin on my mastering chain now since I downloaded it because it's particularly sweet is it like a brick wall? Yeah, it's a brick wall.,: Brick wall limiter?,Speaker A: Brick wall limiter, yes. And it's just seamless, though. You get it set up right, you just don't hear it working at all. And it gives everything that sort of nice punch, obviously, that you look for from a limiter I'm really enjoying based.,: On some other model or something from their own.,Speaker A: There's a whole bunch of models of stuff. There's two bus compressors, a couple of channel strips, bus Compressor Six, I think they call it, and the Bus Compressor.,Speaker B: Two.,Speaker A: Channel Strip Two. But look, they've got a 30 day free trial, so you can have your first month on them. So definitely worth downloading and having a play with.,: You have to give them the credit card.,Speaker A: Give them the credit card. So you got to put a date in your diary if you want to cancel it. I think I'll probably have it for another couple of months. Well, until something else pops up, probably, I'll just hang on to it because, as I say, I do set aside some money to play around with new plugins each month, and that's what I've landed on at the moment. So until something else crops up that I want to try, that's where it will stay.,Speaker C: It's funny with the SSL plugins, though, because when I bought the SSL Two, it came with these plugins. I thought it was in perpetuity, but of course it was not. So there was a whole bunch of stuff like a channel strip and a flex verb and vocal strip xCOMP, there was an EQ, XEQ, X phase, et cetera, and X valve comp.,Speaker A: Sounds like you've got the same bundle.,Speaker C: Yeah, but the thing is, I can't use any of them.,: Why not?,Speaker A: You can't physically use them or they won't work on your machine.,Speaker C: I don't think I can use them because I think from memory, it was like it was just a trial.,Speaker A: Yeah, well, you would have got the 30 day free trial of this.,Speaker C: Possibly, yeah. In fact, I just clicked on it, it says all visible licenses expired.,Speaker A: There you go. Yeah.,: I've been also using the Plugin Alliance stuff, and the main reason why I got Plugin Alliance was because having a HDX card and Waves stopped doing HDX plugins, which are the DSP chip on the Pro Tools cards. So the only ones that you could really get the low latency on was Plugin Alliance. And I have to say, they have a lot of really good stuff, especially their channel strip emulations of various consoles. They have like an API and a Neve and an SSL, and like every generation of SSL and every generation of or a few generations of Neves and the Focus, right, and the AMIC 90, 98, they have a pretty broad range of plugins and they're all easily the same similar quality as the Wave stuff. I have to say, some people I think actually think better, but it's really hard to know when, like, oh, this emulation is better than that emulation. And you're sitting there going like, I've never touched the real thing.,Speaker C: Yes, exactly.,: I have no idea. Really? They sound good.,Speaker C: Well, that's true, though, because everyone that's got these buying plugins guarantee that 95%, if not more, have never actually used the real thing.,Speaker A: Oh, sure, yeah, totally.,Speaker C: So it's like you could basically sell them anything.,: You just use the same EQ algorithm in all of them. Yeah, exactly.,Speaker A: But you would have had to work in a lot of rooms for anyone to have done that. Or be a Chris Lord Algie or someone like that who mixes in different rooms. The average schlopp like you and me, who works in a studio for a few years and then moves to a different job. You certainly wouldn't have played with all of them.,Speaker C: And then half the gear that you were probably using, that was actually the original piece of equipment that they were emulating was probably broken anyway or just getting tired.,Speaker A: Well, that was part of the charm, though.,: That's my good friend Jim Reeves, who mixed a lot of stuff I mean, like, free ride and all kinds of stuff back in the day. And he was joking, but I don't think so much. He was basically saying, like, all these kids, they love the sound of analog. They're in love with the sound of a tape deck that hasn't been aligned in three weeks and its heads are worn out. That's what they think of analog, because that's what we were working on in the studios. There were cranking sessions out left and right. The decks were not necessarily aligned every single time. There was a lot of yeah.,: What people miss is the imperfections of analog. Yeah. They don't miss improperly recorded audio. They just miss the imperfections and the distortion. I mean, the thing that makes a neve preamp sound like a neve or whatever is not that's right. It's accurate. It's that it's not accurate.,: You can say the same thing for a 416.,Speaker C: Yeah, sorry.,: 41 six. That's the distortion that makes it that edge.,: It's the color, it's the EQ curve, it's the way it sounds compressed. All those things is what makes the mic work.,Speaker C: It's funny. I'm sure that we've all been down this track before, but when it's your turn to clean the heads on the reel to reel and you realize that no one has cleaned them for so long, you got the cotton bud, and it's like it's black. You go like what?,: You go through, like, ten swabs. You're like, really?,Speaker A: What do you mean, your turn? It was my job every friggin morning.,: That's exactly what Jim was saying.,Speaker C: Yeah, well, I tell you what. In the studios, the on air studios, no one did it.,Speaker A: I can imagine. Too busy smoking a joint to clean the heads.,Speaker C: Yeah, that's right.,: Blowing the smoke right onto the head.,Speaker A: Yeah, that's right.,Speaker C: And through the mic capsules and everything.,Speaker A: Sitting there smoking a siggy while you got the razor blade and the splicing block out. Yeah, totally.,Speaker C: Exactly. But that's true, though. It's the imperfection that everyone tries to emulate. But the thing is, the imperfection was different on every single unit.,: Well, that's where it's funny, because literally one of the patented things, or whatever that plugin alliance has is this thing called I can't remember it, but basically, when you throw down the plugins, if you throw down 20 SSL plugins on your daw, all 20 will be different.,Speaker C: Oh, really?,: Because no channel in real life, no channel on that board is identical.,Speaker C: Yeah, exactly.,: You all knew that there's like some channels that had the red tape on it and some had the they have the same thing where they vary the performance of the plugins themselves so that you get that same chaotic variation across your daw.,Speaker C: Yeah, because I mean, if you're looking at a huge console, there's all sorts of things coming to play. One of the main things probably is heat.,: Well, like, the channel is closer to the power supply on. Correct. Like, I have a four channel mic preamp and the channel closest to the power supply is a little bit noisier than the other two.,Speaker C: Yeah, exactly. Well, there you go. Plugins.,Speaker A: Hey, plug in, baby.,: Yeah, plugins.,: Plug me in, baby.,Speaker B: Well, that was fun. Outside the Box Mentorship with Dr. Linda Vahdat

Linda Vahdat, MD, MBA, is a breast cancer medical oncologist. She serves as the Deputy Cancer Center Director, Section Chief of Medical Oncology, and Interim Chief of Hematology at Dartmouth Cancer Center. She is a leading breast cancer researcher with special interests in drug development. She has led three separate drug-development efforts that led to FDA approval of three drugs active in metastatic breast cancer. She founded the Triple Negative Breast Cancer Clinic, the second only in the entire country. Mentorship need not be limited to the confines of medical institutions.“Looking back and thinking about all the people I felt really helped me develop into who I am today, there's actually quite a list because everybody brings something different to the party.” And she ascertains the fact that many of her mentors were outside of medicine. Tune into another insightful conversation on The Medicine Mentors as we discuss building long-term relationships to be conducive to growth and seeking mentors outside of medicine that can supplement our medical practice with Dr. Linda Vahdat. Pearls of Wisdom:   1.  The most successful leaders have high EQs and having a high EQ makes a huge difference. It is a skill that can be learned through different outlets—online courses, specialists, podcasts—where we can begin to understand the underpinnings of EQ. 2. We should ensure that we match properly, either as a mentor or as a mentee, with the other person, and re-evaluate that relationship, that it is not a waste of time for either parties, and communicating if that is so to act as a frequent check of the relationship as well as of goals and objectives that we have set up. 3. A good mentor is someone who listens, creates opportunities, and helps balance life. As mentees, we should follow up and close the loop with our mentors because we have to be respectful of the mentor's time, as well. 4. Mentorship doesn't have to be restricted to just medicine. It is more about learning the approach from individuals not just in medicine but also outside of it. It is important to go out of the box and look for mentors who can help you with a mentorship map.

Mercedes-Benz isn't joking with its battery-electric endeavors. The company is rolling out a full line of battery-electric products that are analog to its internal-combustion portfolio. The '23 Mercedes-Benz EQE and its AMG equivalent fill the battery-electric space for E-Class devotees to make the step toward electric motors and away from internal combustion. Launched last year, the EQE sedan borrows the same styling conventions as the more expensive EQS and follows the established trend of having a hopped-up AMG variant. Starting at the EQE 350+, you'll get a rear-drive battery-electric E-Class. Moving up to the EQE 4Matic nets you two motors, and the EQE 500 nets you even more power from those motors. Topping the range is the AMG EQE, which throws 617 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque to the wheels and launches you to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek's executive editor Tom Murphy hops behind the wheel of the '23 Mercedes-Benz EQE 350 4Matic and the '23 Mercedes-AMG EQE. Murphy takes you on a tour of the EQE 350 and highlights his favorite features. Later, Murphy takes you on a live drive review of this battery-electric ‘Benz. While chatting with host Wesley Wren, Murphy talks about the differences between his experiences with the standard EQE 350 and the Mercedes-AMG EQE. Murphy and Wren also discuss how the cars perform, their respective prices, and more. Closing the show, the pair breakdown what makes the AMG EQE and the EQE 350 special.

Built on the same platform as its sedan sibling, the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV could be considered the default flagship vehicle for Mercedes, offering S-Class levels of luxury with the utility of a 3-row family hauler, wrapped in a fully electric package. But while trying to serve so many different buyers, does it end up not doing any job particularly well? We purchased a EQS450 4Matic EV for our test program, and share our first impression of its range, infotainment system, the usability of the third row, and how it compares to other EV SUVs like the Tesla Model X and BMW iX. We also discuss what happens to a car's telematics and infotainment systems when 3G and 4G service is shut down by wireless carriers. Decoder with Nilay Patel
How Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius is refocusing for an electric future

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius became CEO in 2019 but has been working for Mercedes since 1993 in almost every part of the company. During that period, Mercedes spent time getting a lot bigger; the company famously merged with Chrysler for a time, forming a giant called DaimlerChrysler. But, over the past few years, it's actually been getting much smaller and more focused. The Chrysler deal was undone and, just recently, Ola spun off the truck division into its own public company called Daimler Truck, leaving Mercedes-Benz to stand alone as a premium car brand. Car companies are either consolidating into giant conglomerates like Stellantis or shrinking and focusing like Mercedes. A lot of that is driven by the huge shift to electric vehicles and then, on top of that, to cars essentially becoming rolling computers. You'll hear Ola refer to cars as “digital products” a lot — and to Mercedes itself as a tech company. (Actually, he says it's a luxury and tech company.) Mercedes now has two new EVs, the EQS and the EQE, both of which have massive infotainment screens running Mercedes' proprietary MBUX system, which even has its own voice assistant called Hey Mercedes. I had to ask Ola about Apple's recent announcement that the next version of CarPlay would be able to take over every display in the car, including the instrument cluster. Apple showed a Mercedes logo on a slide during that presentation — so, is Ola ready to hand over his UI to Cupertino?  Let's find out. Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz. Here we go.
